MACGRUBER Red-Band Trailer Explodes

The question of whether the 30-second MacGruber skits on SNL can translate to the big screen or not is one step closer, as Rogue Pictures released the trailer for MACGRUBER today.   My money is betting on “No,” and, after watching this trailer, which you can view right now over at Rogue’s official site, that “Yes” isn’t making itself any more evident.

The first half of this trailer is completely devoid of laughs, and then the red-band-ness of it all kicks in, and there are a couple of chuckles here and there.   It still isn’t selling it for me, and I couldn’t help but notice even with this being red-band there is still some obvious dubbing going on here.

What the f*@% is up with that?

Nevertheless, anything with Powers Boothe and Val Kilmer is win enough to get my hard-earned cash.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Only one American hero has earned the rank of Green Beret, Navy SEAL and Army Ranger.   Just one operative has been awarded 16 Purple Hearts, 3 Congressional Medals of Honor and 7 Presidential Medals of Bravery.   And only one guy is man enough to still sport a mullet.   In 2010, Will Forte brings Saturday Night Live’s clueless soldier of fortune to the big screen in the action comedy of MACGRUBER.

The ‘MacGruber’ film has begun filming in Albuquerque, and JustJared was on hand to snap up some set pics.   The scenes being shot feature Will Forte as the title character, Kristen Wiig as Vicki, MacGruber’s assistant, and Ryan Phillippe as an as-yet named character.

While this looks like it’s going to be another in a long line of SNL skits stretched to 90-minute mind-melts, there is hope for the film, yet.   It’s boasting an R rating and bringing Val Kilmer on board as the villain is always going to be considered a plus in our book.

‘MacGruber’ is set for release on April 16th, 2010.

‘MacGruber’ Movie On the Way

How do you take a 30-second premise and expand it into an hour and a half?   Just ask Lorne Michaels.   His SNL writing staff has been turning 30-second ideas into 10-minute skits for years, and, whenever there is the slightest bit of interest in that skit, it expands into a 90-minute train wreck for movie theaters.   It seems ‘MacGruber’ will be the latest attempt at turning launching one of these skits into the next ‘Wayne’s World.’

While accepting a Peabody award for SNL at Monday’s ceremony, Michaels spoke with The Hollywood Reporter and mentioned something about the possibility of a ‘MacGruber’ film.

“It would have to be in the summer because we are back in production in the fall,” he told THR when asked about the possible production timing. “We’re still in discussions on details.”

MacGruber is a hilarious sketch, but there is very little room for turning this into a feature-lenght film.   Only time will tell if this is a comedic or financial success, but, right now, this idea doesn’t interest me in the least.
