THE COLONY – The Review

COLONY_Bill-Paxton_Kevin-Zegers

With the coming of a new ice age, mankind finds itself struggling to survive against mother nature. Humanity has grown to take modern medicine for granted, but now that society has been reduced to the most minimal remnants of what we once knew, the common cold and the flu has become our worst enemy, but what could be worse that microscopic killers?

In THE COLONY, writer and director Jeff Renfroe takes us into the weary lives of the few survivors living underground from the harsh icy wasteland that was once the surface of the Earth. Renfroe, who recently directed a stint of episodes for TV’s BEING HUMAN, seems to have an all access pass into the minds of characters forced to endure abnormally stressful circumstances of life.

The initial concept of THE COLONY is simple, to survive the cold without killing each other in the process. Not surprisingly, the film, as with life and human nature, nothing is ever that simple. The opening series of shots sums up the tone of the film quite well. We’re drawn in from high above in the sky, down towards Earth and into the darkness of an abandoned smoke stack to the sunless depths of the tunnels below. Nothing about this indicates a pleasant journey.

Kevin Zegers (GOSSIP GIRL) plays Sam, the young and still idealistic central character. Sam is one member of a relatively small band of survivors camped out in a make-shift “colony” housed within an old industrial facility, perhaps once a nuclear plant from the looks of the place at times. Laurence Fishburne (THE MATRIX) plays Briggs, the leader of this band of survivors. Briggs is a knowledgeable, logical man. Bill Paxton (BIG LOVE) plays Mason, a more rebellious, head strong member of the camp who feels impulsive and reckless, contrary to what Sam and Briggs represent.

After receiving a video transmission promising new hope originating from another colony, Sam and Briggs head out into the cold, white hell in an effort to reach the other colony. Their journey is a perilous one, encountering dangers that include some staples of social horror, and oddly leads nowhere productive. At times, it can be difficult to watch THE COLONY and not sense the influence of films such as THE THING or even films such as THE HILLS HAVE EYES to some degree, but none of this detracts from the film having its own personality.

Renfroe employs a fair amount of digital effects technology to help create the setting of this bleak, barren planet that has undergone drastic climactic changes, perhaps due in part to man’s insatiable need to tinker with the laws of nature. The effects are used sparingly, but effectively in creating this cinematic atmosphere otherwise nearly impossible to achieve. THE COLONY is one part science-fiction, warning us of the possible outcome of our sometimes arrogant human ways, and one part thriller, a study of ourselves as individuals and as a social species.

THE COLONY shifts as Sam and Briggs are away. In their absence, Mason makes a power play and the integrity of their camp is tested. Unfortunately, this power struggle is extremely short-lived. The more intriguing path of possibility would have been to develop these characters further into their conflicts with each other. Instead, THE COLONY devolves somewhat into a simple chase and kill horror ride as the less civilized human survivors invade the camp and thus, chaos and bloodshed ensue.

The performances in THE COLONY are par for the course. Paxton and Fishburne are as you would typically expect, effective but fairly standard in their roles. The tension that builds in THE COLONY is ultimately what drives the story and allows for a compelled audience to stay committed to the plot. The primary flaw of THE COLONY is that it never truly develops any characters. We know who to pull for, who we want to succeed, because the line between good and bad is well drawn, especially when you have a third, more sinister element of evil lurking in the blinding white void outside.

THE COLONY begins as an interesting tease of becoming an intellectual story of science gone wrong and nature rebelling, leading to the last of humanity struggling amongst themselves and each other with the promise of some foreboding evil that could destroy what little hope they have. While the film is still entertaining on a popcorn-munching adrenaline level, THE COLONY is somewhat disappointing in that it never truly, fully breaks the mold and becomes those things I initially hoped it would be.

Macy (“Fargo”) and Felicity Huffman (“Desperate Housewives”) in Unified Pictures’ music drama RUDDERLESS. Macy is making his feature directorial debut, directing “Rudderless.”

The film is being produced by Keith Kjarval through his Unified Pictures production/finance banner. Brad Greiner, through his Amberdale production banner, is also producing alongside Kjarval and Unified.

Mimi Steinbauer’s Radiant Films International is handling foreign sales on the project and will introduce the feature film to buyers at the upcoming Cannes Film Market in May.

“Rudderless” is a musical drama about the power of a parent’s love. When a grieving father in a downward spiral stumbles across a box of his deceased son’s original music, he forms a band, hoping to find peace in the wake of his tragic loss.

Casey Twenter and Jeff Robison adapted the screenplay from the original story they wrote with William H. Macy. Principal photography will commence this April in Oklahoma.

Watch The Chillingly Creepy Trailer For Jeff Renfroe’s THE COLONY

thecolony

Filmed 60 stories underground, THE COLONY is an ice-cold sci-fi thriller starring Laurence Fishburne and Bill Paxton. Here’s your first look at the official poster and trailer for the film before it hits theaters April 12th.

Such a disquieting preview! Looks like Award-winning director Jeff Renfroe (One Point Zero, Civic Duty) has delivered an action-packed, post-apocalyptic movie with his icy thrill ride.

Set during the next ice-age, an outpost of colonists struggle to survive below the world’s frozen surface. Short on supplies, and plagued by illness and internal conflict, the colonists suspect the worst when they mysteriously lose contact with their only other known settlement, Colony 5. When Colony 7’s leader Briggs (Laurence Fishburne – Contagion, The Matrix Trilogy) decides to lead an expedition to discover what happened, he is challenged by Mason (Bill Paxton – Aliens, Twister), his former comrade-in-arms, who has his own ideas of what is best for the colonists.

Briggs takes two volunteers on the mission, the young Graydon, and Sam (Kevin Zegers – Fifty Dead Men Walking, TV’s Gossip Girl), a strong-willed mechanic who seizes the opportunity to confront the icy wasteland that orphaned him. When they reach their destination, the team discover a threat much worse than nature and must battle to save themselves and protect their fellow colonists in what might be humanity’s last stand.

A riveting, intense story of survival, humanity, and desperation, THE COLONY is a rich addition to the post-apocalyptic action genre.

CONTAGION (2011) – The Review

All right! Who’s up for a good ole’ fashioned disaster movie with a bunch of big time movie stars? I mean one where you can’t swing a cat ( or tainted pig ) without hitting an Oscar winner? Well Steven Soderbergh’s CONTAGION is just the flick for you! True there’s plenty of trophy holders, but this is not your Irwin Allen-style jeopardy movie. No need for fancy special effects with detailed miniatures ( or CGI like 2012 ). This isn’t about a flood, fire,or quake. It’s a disease that’s cutting a swath through the cast. And being a Soderbergh film, the tone is more quiet that the ” cast of thousands ” epics of years past ( kind of like TRAFFIC ) . This may be more of a thinking man’s disaster movie. Instead of climbing and leaping to safety, the people here are having to make moral choices and protect their loved ones while an air of doom surrounds them. The “feel good movie of the year” it ain’t!

The bad times begin with Beth Emhoff’s ( Gwyneth Paltrow ) unfortunate Hong Kong business trip. She returns to the states a sweaty coughing mess. Back at the Minnesota home she shares with her hubby Mitch ( Matt Damon ) and young son, her condition worsens. After she collapses and convulses on the kitchen floor Mitch rushes her to the hospital. Meanwhile reports filter in from Hong Kong. There’s an Internet video of someone convulsing, then dying on a public bus. Soon the Center for Disease Control ( the CDC) in Atlanta springs into action. Dr. Ellis Cheever ( Laurence Fishbourne ) sends Dr. Erin Mears ( Kate Winslet ) to Minnesota. Meanwhile the World Health Organization dispatches Dr. Leonora Orantes ( Marion Cotillard ) to Hong Kong to find patient zero. Scientists at the CDC ( Jennifer Ehle and Demetri Martin ) try to create a vaccine to battle this highly contagious new virus. A popular  blogger Alan Krumwiede ( Jude Law ) takes to his Internet soapbox to warn of government cover-ups and publicize a miracle herbal drug. As the bodies pile up, the citizenry becomes desperate and marshal law is enacted. Will this deadly disease hasten the end of days?

Soderbergh references the paranoia surrounding H1N1 of a few years back in telling this new tale ( he also mentions the great Spanish Flu Epidemic of 1918 ). With the fear of contact we’re also reminded of the early days of AIDS. While some scenes of desperation are harrowing, Soderbergh keeps things moving at a fairly low-key pace. Seems the sun’s never shining in the USA during this crisis. Some of the familiar actors who pop in can be a bit distracting ( There’s Elliot Gould! Look it’s Veronica Mars’s dad! ), though it doesn’t take you out of the fairly grim proceedings ( a few laughs are squeezed in ). The old horror movie trope of the camera lingering on objects works to great effect here. Instead of an axe or cleaver we see objects covered in virus germs ( That bowl of peanuts! The doorknob! ). All the subplots are kept moving and a few characters are revealed to have ulterior motives. Big kudos for the final flashback to the first day of the plague. It’s an interesting and , yes, entertaining exploration of the doomsday scenario. Oops, I’m out of hand sanitiser!

New Images of Steven Soderbergh’s CONTAGION Are Here

Warner Bros. Pictures has released a slew of new images from the upcoming thriller CONTAGION. The photo gallery includes a few behind-the-scenes stills as well as a look at Steven Soderbergh’s film.

An international traveler reaches into the snack bowl at an airport bar before passing her credit card to a waiter. A  business meeting begins with a round of handshakes. A man coughs on a crowded bus…

One contact. One instant. And a lethal virus is transmitted.

When Beth Emhoff (Gwyneth Paltrow) returns to Minneapolis from business in Hong Kong, what she thought was jet lag takes a virulent turn. Two days later, she’s dead in the ER and the doctors tell her shocked and grieving husband (Matt Damon) they have no idea why.

Soon, others exhibit the same mysterious symptoms: hacking coughs and fever, followed by seizure, brain hemorrhage…and ultimately, death. In Minneapolis, Chicago, London, Paris, Tokyo and Hong Kong, the numbers quickly multiply: one case becomes four, then sixteen, then hundreds, thousands, as the contagion sweeps across all borders, fueled by the countless human interactions that make up the course of an average day.

A global pandemic explodes.

At the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, researchers mobilize to break the code of a unique biological pathogen as it continues to mutate. Deputy Director Cheever (Laurence Fishburne) tries to allay the growing panic despite his own personal concerns, and must send a brave young doctor (Kate Winslet) into harm’s way. At the same time, amid a rising tide of suspicion over a potential vaccine – and who gets it first – Dr. Leonora Orantes (Marion Cotillard) of the World Health Organization works through the network of connections that could lead back to the source of what they’re dealing with.

As the death toll escalates and people struggle to protect themselves and their loved ones in a society breaking down, one activist blogger (Jude Law) claims the public isn’t getting the truth about what’s really going on, and sets off an epidemic of paranoia and fear as infectious as the virus itself.

Academy Award® winner Steven Soderbergh (“Traffic”) directs the global thriller “Contagion,” bringing together a stellar international ensemble cast led by Academy Award® winner Marion Cotillard (“La Vie en Rose,” “Inception”); Academy Award® winner Matt Damon (“Good Will Hunting,” the “Bourne” films); Academy Award® nominee Laurence Fishburne (“What’s Love Got to Do With It,” “The Matrix”); Academy Award® nominee Jude Law (“Cold Mountain,” “Sherlock Holmes”); Academy Award® winner Gwyneth Paltrow (“Shakespeare in Love,” “Iron Man”); and Academy Award® winner Kate Winslet (“The Reader,” “Titanic”).

Directed by Steven Soderbergh from an original screenplay by Scott Z. Burns (“The Bourne Ultimatum,” “The Informant!”), the film also stars Bryan Cranston (AMC’s “Breaking Bad”), Jennifer Ehle (“The King’s Speech”) and Sanaa Lathan (“Alien Vs. Predator”). It is produced by Michael Shamberg, Stacey Sher and Gregory Jacobs, with Jeff Skoll, Michael Polaire, Jonathan King and Ricky Strauss serving as executive producers. The creative filmmaking team includes production designer Howard Cummings, Oscar®-winning editor Stephen Mirrione, costume designer Louise Frogley and composer Cliff Martinez.

A Warner Bros. Pictures presentation, in association with Participant Media and Imagenation Abu Dhabi, a Double Feature Films/Gregory Jacobs Production, “Contagion” will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment company.

Concurrently with its nationwide theatrical distribution, the film will be released in select IMAX® theatres worldwide on September 9th!

“Contagion” is rated PG-13 for disturbing content and some language.

Review: PREDATORS

The Predators are back and ready to hunt… humans!

Imagine waking up in a free fall. One second you are living your life, the next you are falling out of the sky into a jungle. That is what happened to Royce (Adrien Brody), Edwin (Topher Grace), Isabella (Alice Braga), Stans (Walter Goggins), Nikolai (Oleg Takarov), Cuchillo (Danny Trejo), Mombasa (Mahershalhalalhashbaz Ali), and Hanzo (Louis Ozawa Changchien). Most were military, or some form of fighter. They were all (but one) predators in their world. Now, they are in some strange new world, with no idea how they got their and no clue how to leave. All they do know is that something very powerful and strange is after them.

Man, this movie was fun! If you are a fan of these handsome creatures, then you are sure to enjoy this flick. The Predators look FANTASTIC! But, with Robert Rodriguez working as one of the producers, it makes sense. They did a great job in keeping the story line simple and straight to the point. There aren’t a ton of side stories, or crazy gimmicks. The film follows the characters as they are picked off one by one by the Predators.

Lawrence Fishburne sneaks into a small role as a crazy man named Noland, who has been stuck on the island for 10 hunting seasons. His mind is completely gone, but he is the longest to survive. Brody ends up outsmarting him, since he is the leader of sorts to this misfit bunch. He makes for a good leader who is smarter than the rest of the pack, except for maybe Isabella. The only part I didn’t like about Brody was that his voice through half of the movie resembled that of Christian Bale in “The Dark Knight”.

One part of the film that is slightly different from the rest of the Predator films is that the characters all seem to have this moral dilemma. They were bad in their previous lives, but now have to decide to help each other out or not. The biggest dilemma happening with Brody, who seems to be a loner.

The only thing I wish is that there were more Predators… then again, the movie could have been all Predators and I would still want more!

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5 stars … and a long Predator crackling sound!
