THE HATEFUL EIGHT – The Review

hateful8

For the last couple of decades film fans have been bemoaning the lack of flicks set in the old wild West. Many even remarked that the “horse opera” or “oater” was a dead genre, that its heydays were nearly twenty five years ago (Clint Eastwood’s UNFORGIVEN took Oscar gold in 1992). At the end of 2015, the corpse of the Western, seems to have been revived. And who are the “mad scientists”, well “mad movie makers” perhaps, shocking this corpse back to life via their electrifying talents? Well, Oscar winner Alejandro Inarritu, fresh off his BIRDMAN triumph, puts Leonardo DiCaprio through the wringer (emotional and physical) in THE REVENANT, which we’ll discuss in length when it gallops into theatres in a couple of weeks. The film that’s out on Christmas Day (in a very special limited release) comes from the ultimate movie fanatic turned film maker Quentin Tarantino. Now it was almost three years ago to the day that he first tried on his Stetson with DJANGO UNCHAINED, an ode to one of his beloved “grindhouse” staples, the “blackspoitation” action flick mixed with the old-fashioned “sagebrush” story. Now QT is hitting the trail once more, this time attempting to recreate the “road show” film releases of the 1950’s and 60’s with a “saddle saga” more epic in scope, eschewing digital projection and presenting it in select theatres in 70 mm (excuse me, Super Panavision 70 mm), even filming it with the same lenses that created many of those revered 60’s spectacles. And to give it the proper 60’s Western polish, he’s actually recruited the man responsible for the signature scores of that genre in that era, Ennio Morricone, to provide the music (including an overture prior to the opening titles). All this to accompany the thundering hoofbeats and exploding six guns of THE HATEFUL EIGHT. Giddyup!

As the strains of the “maestro’s” theme builds, the film opens up on the cold, snowy trails of Wyoming, not long after the end of the Civil War. A solitary figure waves down a lone stagecoach. Only two passengers are inside: bounty hunter John “the Hangman” Ruth (Kurt Russell) and his prisoner, the notorious Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh). After reminding Ruth of a previous meeting, the man who flagged them down, another bounty hunter, Major Marquis Warren (Samuel L Jackson), is allowed to join them (after lots of negotiations). Soon the coach is full when Chris Mannix (Walton Goggins) emerges from the woods and pleads for the last seat, telling the men that he is also headed to Red Rock to become the town’s new Sheriff (the men are very skeptical of this “wild card”). The coach’s driver soon realizes that they won’t outrun the approaching blizzard and must wait it out at the nearby “stage stop”, Minnie’s Haberdashery. Ruth and Warren are surprised to discover that owners Minnie and “Sweet Dave” are nowhere to be found. According to one of their new staff, Bob (Demian Bichir), the couple are visiting relatives, over the ridge. Once again, the bounty hunters are skeptical. But they’re not the only ones stranded. Trying to keep warm are the stoic cowboy Joe Gage (Michael Madsen), gregarious Englishman Oswaldo Mobray (Tim Roth), and former Confederate officer General Sandy Smithers (Bruce Dern). As the storm rages, Ruth and Warren soon believe that these men are not who they say they are. Could one of them, or all of them, be in “cahoots” with the dangerous, desperate Daisy?

Pretty impressive octet, eh? Actually there’s a few more cast members (including a very hot, young Hollywood hunk not seen ij the film’s ads) who are also very impressive. As you see, the majority of the eight are QT vets. The most frequent member, Jackson, really becomes the story’s main protagonist, deducing and dishing out justice. There’s more than a touch of Jules (his breakout role in PULP FICTION) in Warren, the man who must deftly manuever through the still wounded by war America. Jackson still projects that fierce determination and intelligence we’ve seen in his very best work, making him a most memorable Western hero. Closer to the usual “oater” lead “buckeroo” is Russell (nearly hidden beneath that walrus,Yosemite Sam ‘stache) as the swaggering man of action (said swagger almost channeling Western icon John Wayne), who and often succeeds at being the alpha male among this “wolf pack”. His boisterous performance at times turns Minnie’s into a private concert hall, entertaining and intimidating us with his outrageous bluster and behavior. Part of that behavior is his brutal treatment of Daisy, somewhat shifting our sympathies to her. That’s until her true, sinister nature kicks in. Leigh (making her astounding arrival into the “Tarantino-verse”) is a sullen, feral she-demon, spewing obscenities and racial epithets like a spitting cobra. With Leigh’s silent glare she tells us that she’s just as savage, if not more so, than any hombre.

Just as watchable is Goggins, who had a small role in DJANGO, as Mannix. His body language conveys a very malleable misfit, whose loyalties can switch in seconds, even as his somewhat think skull struggles to process each new curve thrown at him. After racking up a terrific TV career (from “The Shield” to “Justified”), he proves to be a great screen presence. Another vet from that earlier flick has been a screen star before the birth of Mr. Goggins.  Dern as Smithers seems to be the stereotyped, docile old “coot” in a rocking chair, but when he’s verbally poked, he shows us that seething stare, warning his tormentor like a rattlesnake, that his fury will be unleashed. It’s a great follow-up to Dern’s award-worthy work a couple of years ago in NEBRASKA. Roth has a unique spin on the old cliché of the smiling, refined English “dandy” whose effete manners hides his motives. Madsen is surly and sullen as the tight-lipped, close-to-the-vest cowpoke, who is all squint-eyed, laid-back menace. Bichir gives a toned-down performance as the deferential Bob, who suffers ethnic slurs without blinking while trying to keep his “customers’ comfortable.

Much as with his earlier “horse opera”, Tarantino’s new film is a bit of a hybrid. His original screenplay and story is almost equal parts Zane Grey and Agatha Christie, reminiscent of her oft-filmed “Ten Little Indians” (some have even called it a “cowboy CLUE”). It’s a drama of observed looks and gestures that can suddenly erupt in bloody violence (often as over-the-top as any of George Romero’s zombie classics). Since so much of the story is set in Minnie’s roomy general store, many have speculated that this may have been conceived as a stage play. That’s not to infer that Tarantino has treated it as such. His camera swoops in to capture the gunplay, while his edits and cuts direct us right to the most drama and conflict. He even makes the weather a character, as the blizzard, like a howling beast, presses in the cracked door. This is particularly true with the visuals used during a flashback tale. You can almost feel the frigid air cutting through you right to the bone. It may seem an odd choice to shoot a mostly indoor story with “old school” 70mm, but the results are never “stagey” or claustrophobic. The superb, sweeping score by Morricone certainly aides in opening things up. Best of all may be that Tarantino dialogue, though peppered with “f-bombs’ and “n-words”, is gloriously “un-PC”, and often close to poetic. We can see the delight in the cast’s eyes has they savor each syllable like a fine wine. He’s been threatening a retirement from films, but hopefully this true cinema lover (it truly oozes out of every frame) will continue to keep us entertained with work as enthralling, outrageous, and ambitious as THE HATEFUL EIGHT. Whoa!

Fantastic Fest: BONE TOMAHAWK – The Review

bone_tomahawk__full

Some words just sound better on paper than on-screen. Such is the case with S. Craig Zahler’s horror western BONE TOMAHAWK. What works in literary form does not work when spoken through the mouth of actors Patrick Wilson, Matthew Fox, and other members of this fine cast. Zahler has had a bright career as a published writer dabbling in genres but mainly sticking to the western front. Although I’m not as familiar with his style as some, his timely but overly snappy dialogue doesn’t quite roll off the tongue, and certainly isn’t as quick and sharp as the weapon of the film’s title.

A lone thief (David Arquette) shuffles into town late one night. He just lost his partner (played by genre veteran Sid Haig) and is still shaken by a sudden attack he barely escaped. But just as quickly as he downs his drink at the local watering hole, the town’s sheriff (Kurt Russell) throws him in jail – of course not before shooting him in the foot. The town’s nurse (Lili Simmons) is called upon to fix the new hole in the man. However, this late night call quickly turns into a nightmare when her husband Arthur O’Dwyer (Patrick Wilson) wakes to find that his wife is still missing in the morning. All signs point to a cannibalistic tribe that live deep in the mountains. It is now up to the sheriff, his assistant deputy Chicory (Richard Jenkins), an indian-killing gunslinger (Matthew Fox), and the injured O’Dwyer to hunt down the tribe and rescue the missing woman.

Russell and Jenkins are in top form as the two aging lawmen. Russell is straight no nonsense and all grit while Jenkins delivers much levity to the ultra serious affair. Their scenes opposite one another work the best. A charming rapport is ignited by two actors that can do this stuff in their sleep. Even still, some of their lines feel so forced and unnatural that you can’t help but roll your eyes.

Thankfully the dialogue starts to come together once the group sets out on the dusty trail. Male-bonding takes center-stage as the four men venture out into the unknown. Their support for the injured O’Dwyer is admirable and adds heart to their journey. But just as slowly as Wilson limps along, the film moves at a snail’s pace. At 133 minutes, Zahler spends far too long forcing the audience to empathize with O’Dwyer’s redemptive struggle against all odds to find his wife – he’s shown as some form of Rocky mixed with Jesus.

BONE TOMAHAWK showcases an impressive cast playing a cheap looking game of cowboys and indians. Aside from what the actors’ salaries, the only moments where you feel like the budget is being put to good use is in the gory effects. Blood splurts, limbs are removed, and bodies are bisected like meat in a butcher’s shop. The final act is a real showstopper! Gore hounds will be satisfied as well as those looking for a western with some bite. It’s just a damn shame that the journey leading up to the bloody bits is littered with stale male bonding, cheap looking costumes, and absolutely zero tension. Instead of building atmosphere as the cowboys close-in on the cannibal cave, Zahler seems more keen on creating sympathy for Wilson as he is shown time and time again hobbling around the desert.

BONE TOMAHAWK seems to want to be both a male bonding classic western while also incorporating a healthy amount of exploitation shocks. Zahler’s persistance on unnatural cowboy banter combined with an unnecessary sex scene (complete with female nudity, of course) and over the top bloodshed make this feel as if Lucio Fulci directed THE SEARCHERS. Given the talent involved, BONE TOMAHAWK feels more tawdry than the exciting genre mashup that it was shooting to be.

Fantastic Fest 2015: A Preview of this Year’s Films, Parties, and Chaos

fantastic_fest_turkish_logo

Fantastic Fest is more like summer camp than just a normal film festival. It happens once a year in September. You get together with old friends and meet new ones. Every day and night is filled with fun activities. Most importantly though, this non-traditional camp is for fans of the most bizarre, violent, horrific, and FANTASTIC films you could imagine. And even still, Fantastic Fest is so much more. I will be covering Fantastic Fest once again this year starting September 24 through October 1. This will be my fourth time attending Fantastic Fest and We Are Movie Geeks fifth time covering the crazy events that take place in Austin. For eight days I will be immersed in a world that is unlike any other film festival I have ever attended. What other festival is going to feature events like an opening night Christmas party, a karaoke competition, a “nerd rap” throwdown, and the signature event of the fest – Fantastic Debates (which includes a verbal debate followed by a literal boxing match). These are just a few of the things that have me excited to arrive in Austin in just a few days. Alamo Drafthouse CEO and Fantastic Fest co-founder Tim League and his team have once again assembled a great lineup of films that include THE WITCH, GREEN ROOM, YAKUZA APOCALYPSE, THE LOBSTER, HIGH-RISE, ANOMALISA, and the closing night film: BONE TOMAHAWK. And who else is better to unveil the world premiere of BONE TOMAHAWK than the star of the film, Kurt Russell. Yes, Kurt Russell is coming to Fantastic Fest. There’s so much that has me excited that I will most likely lay awake restless every night until the Fest starts on Thursday. Before I pack my bags though, I thought I’d share with you what I’m most looking forward to.

The Opening Night Film – THE LOBSTER

IMG_3703.CR2

Yorgos Lanthimos is one of the most exciting directors working today. His films take viewers to worlds that are slightly askew. They are in a hyper reality that feels truly human, but they still include elements of fantasy that makes them unique and delightfully bizarre. A few of the Greek director’s previous noteworthy films include DOGTOOTH and ALPS. Working in the English language for the first time, Lanthimos utilizes an all-star cast led by Colin Farrell and Rachel Wiesz to tell a tale about a society that forces every citizen to find a mate by a certain age. The punishment if you don’t is that you are turned into an animal of your choosing and sent out into the wild. THE LOBSTER wowed audiences at The Cannes Film Festival this past May, and this will mark the U.S. premiere of the film. Watching the trailer will give you a taste of the surreal world that Lanthimos is dishing up – a world that I simply can not wait to dive head first into.

The Alamo Drafthouse – The Greatest Movie Theater in the Universe

Alamo_S_Lamar_1

That’s not empty praise. The Alamo Drafthouse started in Austin in 1997 and has since branched out to spread the company’s love of cinema to other cities. For the 10thAnniversary of the festival, the Drafthouse on South Lamar and its adjoining bar The High Ball re-opened its doors after being closed for over a year due to upgrades and renovations – last year’s festival was well worth the wait. Film fans and critics come from all over the world to attend this festival, not just for the lineup but because the atmosphere is integral to the festival. Great food, comfortable seating, and a friendly staff are just some of the perks of the location. But there’s one major fact that makes this place a Mecca for true cinemagoers: A very strict “No Cell-Phone Policy.” Did I mention how great their shakes are?  It’s nearly impossible to not order a Mexican Vanilla shake or a local beer from one of Austin’s many great craft breweries every time you are in the theater.

A Witchy Woman

thewitch

When I first heard the positive reactions out of the Sundance Film Festival, I immediately put THE WITCH high on my most anticipated list. Just watch the first trailer that was released last month if you dare. The film looks beautiful and terrifying! It also looks like a return to moody gothic horror, which is right up my alley. THE WITCH marks the feature length debut for Robert Eggers, and if winning a Best Director award at Sundance isn’t an indication of a talented new voice in American horror, than I don’t know what is. I’m ready for this film to put me under its spell.

My Eye is on Refn

the-act-of-seeing-600x739

Filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn is returning to Fantastic Fest, and he’s bringing some treats with him. The Danish director shares his unique collection of rare American exploitation movie posters in the new hardcover book Nicolas Winding Refn: The Act of Seeing. Three of the films featured in the book – FAREWELL UNCLE TOM, THE X-RATED SUPERMARKET and MY BODY HUNGERS – were selected by Refn to screen during Fantastic Fest, followed by a Q&A and book signing. Refn is known for his stylish films filled with lush and vibrant imagery, such as BRONSON, ONLY GOD FORGIVES, VALHALLA RISING, and the 2011 film sensation DRIVE. The Act of Seeing will hopefully serve as a gateway into the mind’s eye of one of cinema’s strongest visual directors. Plus, it’s not everyday that you see a film with the title THE X-RATED SUPERMARKET on the big-screen.

Fantastic Fest Alumni

4guide_green_room__large

Fantastic Fest filmmaking alumni are represented in three of the films I’m most excited about: HIGH-RISE, GREEN ROOM and KLOVN FOREVER. Ben Wheatley has seen all of his films play at the festival. And make no mistake, all of them are fantastic. I’m especially partial to the dark, existential road-trip SIGHTSEERS. Wheatley’s new Fantastic Fest entry is HIGH-RISE – an adaptation of J.G. Ballard’s chilling and poetic novel about modern life. Jeremy Saulnier follows up the exceptional revenge film BLUE RUIN with GREEN ROOM. This Cannes Film Festival darling features Patrick Stewart in a much darker role as a diabolical club owner who squares off against a young punk band. On a lighter note, the lovingly idiotic Frank Hvam and Casper Christensen reunite for KLOVN FOREVER. I saw KLOWN (aka KLOVN – THE MOVIE) at my very first Fantastic Fest in 2011. I’m not sure I have ever laughed so loud in a movie theater in my life. Thankfully I wasn’t the only one howling like a big dumb idiot. The whole crowd ate up this Danish comedy. If the sequel only has half the amount of laughs as the first film, I will still be one happy camper.

Kurt Russell Killing Cannibals

bone_tomahawk__full

What more can you say about an actor who has appeared in some of your favorite films? I grew up watching the collaborations between John Carpenter and Kurt Russell with my dad. It was hard to think about the word “cool” when I was 10 yrs. old and not picture Russell in ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK. The fact that he is in a Western where his mission is to rescue a girl from a cannibalistic tribe, brings a smile ear to ear over my face. S. Craig Zahler’s existential horror western BONE TOMAHAWK makes its World Debut as the closing night film of the fest. To carry the Western theme into the wee hours of the night, Fantastic Fest’s closing night party will take place in a real, abandoned cowboy town located on the outskirts of Austin. I’m so ready! Giddyup!

Turkish Delights

remix-remake-ripoff-locarno

Turkish genre cinema is in the spotlight at this year’s Fantastic Fest. This school of ‘70s renegade filmmaking is explored in the new documentary REMIX, REMAKE, RIP-OFF, which will be receiving its U.S. Premiere with director Cem Kaya in attendance. As part of the Turkish celebration, Fantastic Fest will be screening three seminal films, YILMAYAN ŞEYTAN (aka THE DEATHLESS DEVIL), TARKAN VİKİNG KANI (aka TARKAN VS THE VIKINGS), and DÜNYAYI KURTARAN ADAM (aka THE MAN WHO SAVES THE WORLD, aka TURKISH STAR WARS) – a film that I recently watched and was shocked by how many shots are just lifted straight from STAR WARS. The screenings will be complemented by the attendance of iconic Turkish filmmaker Çetin İnanç and moviestar Kunt Tulgar. In keeping with the Turkish spirit, this year’s poster is comprised exclusively of elements from classic Turkish movie art. You can see this incredible poster below.

Hopefully this gives you an idea of the many reasons why I’m so excited about Fantastic Fest this year. Celebrating 11 years of quality programming for fans of horror, sci-fi, fantasy, and exploitation cinema, Fantastic Fest has proven it is one of the best film festivals in the world. Stay tuned all this week and next week for We Are Movie Geek’s coverage of the fest. You can also follow my thoughts and exploits every step of the way on Twitter @MPHaffner. Get ready Austin… I’m coming back for you!

They weren’t at Comic-Con last year, so this will probably be your final chance to see them all together before the film comes out. After all, Jennifer Lawrence is a very busy girl!

THE HATEFUL EIGHT

Untitled

Quentin Tarantino is back with his eight film, THE HATEFUL EIGHT, and is ready to tear Hall H up! Despite the rough start (such as a leaked script), Tarantino’s newest adventure is sure to be anything but ordinary! Filmed in Telluride, Colorado, this spaghetti western takes place roughly around a decade after the Civil War. Eight strangers find themselves stranded in a blizzard. They may survive the blizzard, but can they survive each other?

THE HATEFUL EIGHT features an amazing cast such as Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Samuel L. Jackson, and Michael Madsen. Since it’s a Tarantino film, be ready for some next level gun slinging! This will definitely be a first look, so fingers crossed for a trailer! (Ignore all of the ones on YouTube. They’re fake.) I don’t normally camp out for Hall H, but I just may for this one.

SATURDAY, JULY 11

THE HIVE

ffthehive_huge

Now this one has me excited for two reasons. Not only is THE HIVE the best horror film of the year, but it’s directed by my good friend David Yarovesky. Hooray!

THE HIVE is the twisted sci-fi/horror tale of Adam, a teen counselor at Camp Yellow Jacket and his mission to regain his memory after waking up in a boarded up cabin. His only clue as to what’s happening is the notes he’s scrawled for himself on the walls and the disturbing physical transformation he must overcome. The only memories he has aren’t his own, yet those memories may be the key to Adam’s survival.

David Yarovesky and stars Gabriel Basso, Gabrielle Walsh and Jacob Zachar will be appearing at several events, included an intimate panel where fans will be able to see clips from the film. I asked David about his thoughts on sharing footage of his film with audiences, and he said “I think people are gonna be really surprised by our panel. I can’t wait…”

FRIDAY, JULY 10

  • (12:00-12:30pm) The Nerdist Conival at PetCo Park : Nerdist will be hosting a conversation with director David Yarovesky and the cast.

SATURDAY, JULY 11

  • (1:00-2:00pm) Indigo Ballroom : The Nerdist Panel with Chris Hardwick – David Yarovesky will be joining Chris Hardwick and the Nerdist team.
  • (3:30-4:30pm) Horton Grand Theater : Nerdist Presents THE HIVE – Director David Yarovesky and the cast host an intimate panel where fans will get a first look at the upcoming film.

New Photo And Comic-Con Trip In Store For Quentin Tarantino’s THE HATEFUL EIGHT

the-hateful-eight

Director Quentin Tarantino will be bringing sneak peek footage of his highly anticipated THE HATEFUL EIGHT to Comic-Con 2015 and, today, the Weinstein Company has released a new photo from the film.

EW says:

The Pulp Fiction director will be taking over Hall H on Saturday, July 11 at 1:30 p.m. to talk about his ambitious 19th-century tale of eight dangerous people holed up during a blizzard and to show off footage from the upcoming western. Comic-Con’s go-to moderator Chris Hardwick will emcee the proceedings, which will also include appearances from unspecified members of the cast.

THE HATEFUL EIGHT

(L-R) QUENTIN TARANTINO directs KURT RUSSELL, JENNIFER JASON LEIGH, and TIM ROTH on the set of THE HATEFUL EIGHT

In THE HATEFUL EIGHT, set six or eight or twelve years after the Civil War, a stagecoach hurtles through the wintry Wyoming landscape. The passengers, bounty hunter John Ruth (Kurt Russell) and his fugitive Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh), race towards the town of Red Rock where Ruth, known in these parts as “The Hangman,” will bring Domergue to justice.

Along the road, they encounter two strangers: Major Marquis Warren (Samuel L. Jackson), a black former union soldier turned infamous bounty hunter, and Chris Mannix (Walton Goggins), a southern renegade who claims to be the town’s new Sheriff.

Losing their lead on the blizzard, Ruth, Domergue, Warren and Mannix seek refuge at Minnie’s Haberdashery, a stagecoach stopover on a mountain pass. When they arrive at Minnie’s, they are greeted not by the proprietor but by four unfamiliar faces. Bob (Demian Bichir), who’s taking care of Minnie’s while she’s visiting her mother, is holed up with Oswaldo Mobray (Tim Roth), the hangman of Red Rock, cow-puncher Joe Gage (Michael Madsen), and Confederate General Sanford Smithers (Bruce Dern).

As the storm overtakes the mountainside stopover, our eight travelers come to learn they may not make it to Red Rock after all…

Let the awards buzz begin – THE HATEFUL EIGHT will be released on Christmas Day in 70MM, for two weeks, and will expand on January 8, 2015.
