JUMANJI: THE NEXT LEVEL – Review

So what’s a favorite gift that’s usually under the Christmas tree, usually straight from the North Pole? Aside from the dolls (and action figures), craft sets, and sports equipment. a staple would be a game, more specifically a board game. That was the thinking of the celebrated author of children’s’ books, Chris Van Allsburg, when he came up with the beloved “kid lit’ classic that was made into an even more beloved 1995 fantasy adventure flick, JUMANJI. Twenty-two years later “reboot fever'”struck Sony/Columbia Studios (along with most of Hollywood), so they decided to do an upgrade. First, they tossed out the dice, spinners, and all the board game fixtures and opted to go high tech (somewhat) and make it a video game. Mind you, it was somewhat “old school” with a cartridge, console, and joysticks, rather than the computer and internet systems. Oh, and instead of things escaping from the game, the players would be “sucked in” and become avatars (played by a quartet of adult stars). This “re-imagining” was a box office smash two years ago, so here comes the third (if you count 2005’s ZATHURA: A SPACE ADVENTURE) spin-off/reboot/sequel, JUMANJI: THE NEXT LEVEL.

As Christmas break approaches, the four young heroes of the last film, then high schoolers, now college freshmen, are looking forward to reuniting in their New Hampshire hometown. Well, all but Spencer (Alex Wolff), who’s just not adjusting to life at his NYC school. Hey, he’s even taking a “break” from his new, now long-distance GF, Martha (Morgan Turner). When he does make it to the family house, he finds out that he’ll have to share a room with his cranky Grandpa’ Eddie (Danny DeVito), who’s nursing a hip injury. That first morning, while Spence’s mom is at work, they get a surprise visit from Eddie’s former business partner Milo (Danny Glover). Things are tense between the two, so Spence, instead of joining his old pals at the town diner for Brunch, retreats to the basement and digs out the, now busted, Jumanji video game. Sometime later, Martha along with Bethany (Madison Iseman) and “Fridge” (Ser’Darius Blain). drop by to see why Spence didn’t show. They get their answer when they head to the basement to find the game now repaired and sending out sparks. It activates and pulls in Martha and Fridgein, via a glowing green light. Boom, they’re back in the jungle with the same avatars. But some things have changed. Martha is still Ruby Roundhouse (Karen Gillan), but Fridge is now Prof. Oberon (Jack Black). Both are stunned to find that Milo is “Mouse” Finbar (Kevin Hart) and Eddie is Smulder Bravestone (Dwayne Johnson) Seems the guys upstairs get zapped, too. Where’s Spence and Bethany? Nigel (Rhys Darby) soon shows up to explain their mission: something about retrieving a mystical magic jewel stolen by Jorgen the Brutal (Rory McCann) and his legion of nasties. Can they succeed, this time facing sand and ice, before using up their game lives (only three), and finally return to the real world? Again? Otherwise, it’s game over…for reals!

The returning cast slips into their roles with ease, though they get to put on new spin via their “real world” players. Most entertaining may be Hart (never thought I’d say that) who expertly mimics the slow, measured line delivery of Glover, quite a change from his usual manic, motor-mouthed characters. Less successful, but still committed, is Johnson doing a crotchety ole’ East “Coastaaar” as DeVito, while still looking fierce in his Doc Savage cosplay (whatever happened to the movie project). Black, as the Fridge-filled Prof is still a comic whirlwind as he riffs on RDJ in TROPIC THUNDER. And free from the blue make-up of her Marvel role, Gillan makes a terrific action heroine, as she exchanges those short shorts for a snowsuit (and this time she does “dance fighting” and twirls a mean set of nun-chucks). Also returning is Nick Jonas as “Seaplane”, who appears to be auditioning for an Indiana Jones prequel (or maybe a slightly older Jonny Quest). Adding to the avatar mix is Awkwafina playing master thief Ming, though she’s not given much to work with in the script. It’s a shame that this gifted comic actress (a true scene-stealer) is saddled with bits and one-liners that fall flat. On the other hand, we’re treated to the still sharp comic skills of Mr. DeVito, who continues to get laughs with just a glare or his slow shuffle. And his pairing with the affable but meandering (get to the point already) Glover as Milo is pure comedy team gold. Let’s get them their own “buddy comedy” because neither is “too old for this…er…stuff”.

Jake Kasdan also returns as the director and co-writer, though he ‘s often a traffic cop/tour guide getting us and the principals from one familiar set-piece and sequence to the next. Sure they’ve changed locales, quickly going from the previous jungle settings to the deserts of 1980’s action epics, to the snowy mountains right out WHERE EAGLES DARE or where the Avengers fought Baron Strucker, but they go through the usual routines of bicker, fight, and flee, then repeat. All this is toward thwarting a most generic villain, who we are told is “brutal”, but who mainly towers over Johnson while yelling orders to a platoon of extras who may have wandered off the set of the next Mad Max movie. Sure the CGI beasties are much better than those in the 95 original, but they often seem to have little real “weight” with the manic mandrills bouncing from one rope bridge to another with little impact. Although, big kudos for somehow making the ostriches intimidating. Still, youngsters will get a kick out of Johnson’s cartoon heroics as he slaps the baddies into solid walls (is he part Kryptonian), and at the slapstick antics of Hart and Black, but those a bit older may be tempted to check the time (it could use a good 15 minute trim). At least with the two Dannys, JUMANJI: THE NEXT LEVEL often rises slightly above the level of the usual sequel. Now turn off that game and go outside and play, you kids!

Win A Family Four Pack Of Passes To The St. Louis Advance Screening of THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS 2

Illumination’s tenth feature, THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS 2, is the highly anticipated sequel to the 2016 comedic blockbuster that had the biggest opening weekend ever for an original film, animated or otherwise.

The film opens in theaters on June 7.

Packed with Illumination’s signature irreverence and subversive humor, this new chapter explores the emotional lives of our pets, the deep bond between them and the families that love them, and answers the question that has long intrigued every pet owner: What are your pets really doing when you’re not at home?

Terrier Max (Patton Oswalt) is coping with some major life changes. His owner (Ellie Kemper) is now married and has a toddler, Liam. Max is so worried about protecting the boy that he develops a nervous tic. On a family trip to a farm, Max and mutt Duke (Eric Stonestreet) encounter canine-intolerant cows, hostile foxes and a terrifying turkey, all of which only elevates Max’s anxiety. Luckily, Max gets some guidance from veteran farm dog Rooster (Harrison Ford, making his animated-film debut), who pushes Max to ditch his neuroses, find his inner alpha, and give Liam a little more freedom.

Meanwhile, while her owner is away, plucky Pomeranian Gidget (Jenny Slate) tries to rescue Max’s favorite toy from a cat-packed apartment with a little help from her feline friend, Chloe (Lake Bell), who has discovered the joys of catnip.

And crazy-but-cute bunny Snowball (Kevin Hart) gets delusions of grandeur that he’s an actual superhero after his owner Molly starts dressing him in superhero pajamas. But when Daisy (Tiffany Haddish), a fearless Shih Tzu, shows up to ask for Snowball’s help on a dangerous mission, he’ll have to summon the courage to become the hero he’s only been pretending to be.

Can Max, Snowball, Gidget and the rest of the gang find the inner courage to face their biggest fears?

THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS 2 is produced by Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri and his longtime collaborator Janet Healy, the visionary team behind Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch and the Despicable Me and Minions franchise, and is written by returning Pets screenwriter Brian Lynch. The film is directed by returning filmmaker Chris Renaud, who also directed Illumination’s Despicable Me series and Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax. www.thesecretlifeofpets.com

THE UPSIDE (2019) – Review

Less than a couple of weeks into the new year and film fans have already been treated to a “prequel” (of sorts) with the early days “biopic” ON THE BASIS OF SEX. So, before the sequels and franchise installments begin rolling in, how about a “redo”. No, we’re not talking about a “reboot” or the popular movie-marketing concept, the “re-imagining”, much like THE PREDATOR from a few months ago. We’re talking about a way that Hollywood “recycled’ long before the ecology movement, in short, a good ole’ fashioned remake. Those films usually find their source material from previous studio films, like last year’s fourth (and very popular) version of A STAR IS BORN. But often the studios will look beyond their own library and a cast a net for stories from other lands, say France. In the late 1980s Disney helped establish their more adult division, Touchstone with smash English versions of BOUDU SAVED FROM DROWNING and THREE MEN AND A CRADLE, which you might know as DOWN AND OUT IN BEVERLY HILLS and THREE MEN AND A BABY (the former spawned a TV show, while they latter inspired a sequel). Now another studio, STX (which picked this up from the Weinstein Company for obvious reasons) has turned the international hit THE INTOUCHABLES into the new buddy “dramedy” THE UPSIDE.

This character study oddly begins with a high-speed romp through the streets of the Big Apple. At the wheel of the high priced and powered sports car is an African-American man in his thirties named Dell (Kevin Hart), his passenger, a white man a couple of decades older is Phillip (Bryan Cranston). When New York’s finest finally catches up to them, Dell explains that they’re on the way to the hospital as he points out the folded up wheelchair in the back seat. So how did these two meet requires a six-month flashback? Dell is newly paroled and looking for work. No takers, so he’s content to collect signatures on his job search form. But he’s got to provide for his estranged “baby mama” and his twelve-year-old-son, who’s on the same path as his papa. One fateful day, Dell reports to a swanky apartment building, thinking he’s applying for a janitorial position. Up in the penthouse floor(?), he’s stunned to see several applicants in their “Sunday best” (suits, ties, etc,). Dell soon grows impatient and bursts into an interview, pleading for a signature for his required form. There he meets the quadriplegic best selling author and financial guru Phillip. His executive aide Yvonne (Nicole Kidman) is shocked at his demeanor, explaining that the job is “life auxiliary”, a caregiver to Phillip, who tells Dell to return tomorrow morning for the signature. The next day, Dell shows up and is told by Yvonne that he’s been hired on a “trial” basis (“three strikes and you’re out”) because somehow Phillip is taken with his crude brashness. Over the next few months, Dell helps Phillip enjoy life again, while Phillip introduces Dell to high culture and advises him on building a career. But can class and racial barriers erode between these very different men? Could they even become…friends?

The role of Dell could be seen as a big turning point in the ever-expanding roster of film roles from the prolific Mr. Hart. It’s not merely a rehash of his usual, and often tiresome hyper-manic blustery “child-man”. While it would be easy to say something about discovering “decaf”, this may be a real case of a performer trying to get out of his “comfort zone” and test the “dramatic waters”. Sure, there’s still that “rat-a-tat” punchline delivery, but Dell is more of a real human being, full of regrets over his past while being fearful for his and his family’s (particularly his pre-teen son) future. Some scenes are a bit mawkish and cloying, but Hart isn’t falling back on his time-tested audience-pleasing bits. It helps that he has an excellent screen partner in the always compelling Mr. Cranston. Though Phillip is often seen as a victim of fate and a magnet of sympathy, Cranston imbues him with an aristocratic dignity, with no patience for fools and “kiss-ups” (his disgust at the sycophantic job-seekers is priceles). But Cranston also shows us that Phillip’s can still feel joy, despite his “DNR” demands. Unfortunately, the two main actresses don’t fare nearly as well. Kidman plays the up-tight, button-down gal Friday complete with prim librarian glasses, who is the stern taskmaster to Dell, while barely masking her supressed passion for her boss. Of course, we get a variation of the cliche removing of the spectacles as she “busts a move” at a stuffy party made funky by Dell’s DJ skills. Then there’s the thankless role of Lily, Phillip’s “passion penpal” played by TV vet Julianna Marguiles. The character’s badly concieved, serving only to ignite a big third act conflict. Ms. M deserves better than this contrived “plot pusher”.

Director Neil Burger (DIVERGENT, LIMITLESS) makes excellent use of the NYC locales and keeps the bonding and “friendship funtime” montages to a minimum. And he does elicit excellent dramatic work from Hart. The screenplay adaptation from Jon Hartmere struggles to break free from some tired story tropes and turns. We get an endless riff of homoerotic panic from Dell as he must take care of Phillip’s “bizniz” on a morning when the nurse is tardy (really, no one went over this with him). Later on, Dell is quickly (too quickly, despite the “true story” title card) enamored of opera and in one ludicrous, painfull sequence he “conducts” several classical singers and musicians, echoing one of the “dates’ in PRETTY WOMAN. In many way, Phillip is a combination of that flick’s Richard Gere “John”, a fairy “godfather”, and the “white savior” that derails many a studio effort. But then Dell is another variation on “types”: the uncultured “free spirit” cutting through the BS (as in many Richard Pryor duds like THE TOY) and liberating the “stiff’ (here through lots of weed and …companionship, yes he’s a “pimpin’ pal”) and often venturing into the “magic N….” terrritory (BAGGER VANCE, GREEN MILE, etc.). And despite the “real events’ claim, the plot seems fair too predictable. GREEN BOOK proved that this type of “buddy flick” can be a “crowd pleaser’, but this one seems to have had all its rough edges smoothed away to facilitate a sweet fade-out. That may work for many, but for discerning cinefiles that doesn’t make THE UPSIDE an improvement over the across-the-pond original.
