What a beautiful day. The sun is shining, the birds are chirping… and nerds everywhere are scrambling to get their suitcases packed because it’s everybody’s favorite time of year… COMIC-CON!

Star-Wars-7-The-Force-Awakens-Official-Millenium-Falcon-Photo-IMAX

This is a big one, but let’s not get our hopes up too high. Entertainment Weekly is reporting that there will be no new trailer or clips shown during the panel on Friday, where Lucasfilm president and producer Kathleen Kennedy, director J.J. Abrams, writer Lawrence Kasdan, and other special guests will discuss the film. Don’t get me wrong, this is still super exciting! I hope everyone is wrong about this! Even if there isn’t any new footage, it’s still going to be a great panel. Fingers crossed that Han Solo himself, Mr. Harrison Ford makes an appearance this time!

The final film in The Hunger Games saga will be hitting theaters this fall, but for those of us that can’t wait that long, the cast will be making an appearance during their panel for the final installment on Thursday. They weren’t at Comic-Con last year, so this will probably be your final chance to see them all together before the film comes out. After all, Jennifer Lawrence is a very busy girl!

THE HATEFUL EIGHT

Untitled

Quentin Tarantino is back with his eight film, THE HATEFUL EIGHT, and is ready to tear Hall H up! Despite the rough start (such as a leaked script), Tarantino’s newest adventure is sure to be anything but ordinary! Filmed in Telluride, Colorado, this spaghetti western takes place roughly around a decade after the Civil War. Eight strangers find themselves stranded in a blizzard. They may survive the blizzard, but can they survive each other?

THE HATEFUL EIGHT features an amazing cast such as Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Samuel L. Jackson, and Michael Madsen. Since it’s a Tarantino film, be ready for some next level gun slinging! This will definitely be a first look, so fingers crossed for a trailer! (Ignore all of the ones on YouTube. They’re fake.) I don’t normally camp out for Hall H, but I just may for this one.

SATURDAY, JULY 11

  • (1:30-2:15pm) Hall H : QUENTIN TARANTINO’S THE HATEFUL EIGHT – Academy Award-winning writer/director Quentin Tarantino brings fans an exclusive look at his highly anticipated 8th film, The Hateful Eight. Followed by a Q&A session with the cast.
THE HIVE

ffthehive_huge

Now this one has me excited for two reasons. Not only is THE HIVE the best horror film of the year, but it’s directed by my good friend David Yarovesky. Hooray!

THE HIVE is the twisted sci-fi/horror tale of Adam, a teen counselor at Camp Yellow Jacket and his mission to regain his memory after waking up in a boarded up cabin. His only clue as to what’s happening is the notes he’s scrawled for himself on the walls and the disturbing physical transformation he must overcome. The only memories he has aren’t his own, yet those memories may be the key to Adam’s survival.

David Yarovesky and stars Gabriel Basso, Gabrielle Walsh and Jacob Zachar will be appearing at several events, included an intimate panel where fans will be able to see clips from the film. I asked David about his thoughts on sharing footage of his film with audiences, and he said “I think people are gonna be really surprised by our panel. I can’t wait…”

FRIDAY, JULY 10

  • (12:00-12:30pm) The Nerdist Conival at PetCo Park : Nerdist will be hosting a conversation with director David Yarovesky and the cast.

SATURDAY, JULY 11

  • (1:00-2:00pm) Indigo Ballroom : The Nerdist Panel with Chris Hardwick – David Yarovesky will be joining Chris Hardwick and the Nerdist team.
  • (3:30-4:30pm) Horton Grand Theater : Nerdist Presents THE HIVE – Director David Yarovesky and the cast host an intimate panel where fans will get a first look at the upcoming film.

SERENA – The Review

ser

Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence costarred in a movie shot between SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK and AMERICAN HUSTLE which is finally hitting screens after a couple of years on the shelf and a stint on pay-per-view. SERENA, a gothic tale of greed and ambition run amok, is set amongst the timber industry in the mountains of North Carolina during the Depression. The movie has not received much love from critics and indeed it’s kind of a mess – an overripe melodrama that’s all over the map in terms of tone. It’s full of gorgeous moments alternating with many more that feel literate to the point of boredom, and others where the characters motivations make little sense. But I liked it and think it deserves a better reception then it’s received. If you’re looking for an old fashioned sumptuous costume drama starring two always-watchable leads with proven chemistry (who boldly throw themselves head first into a charmingly preposterous plot), you could do a lot worse than SERENA.

SERENA is the tale of an ambitious timber baron named George Pemberton (Cooper) and his troubled and ruthless marriage to the difficult and remarkable Serena (Lawrence), who emerges as a kind of backwoods Lady Macbeth. After a hasty marriage, Serena sets foot in the mountains and has a strong influence on the workers and employees of the logging company there, including George. In leather trousers and black boots, she strides through the movie with self-confidence, speaking with authority to George’s employees. The daughter of a timber man in Colorado, who died mysteriously along with his entire family, she impresses lumberjacks with her shrewd knowledge of the business, even importing an eagle to take care of rattlesnakes that threaten production. Serena seems too good to be true and it’s soon revealed that she indeed has a big problem – she’s nuts. What sets her off is the news that George fathered a son with a pretty local laborer prior to Serena’s arrival, and when Serena miscarries their own child she grows brittle while George is drawn to the illegitimate baby. By then though, George has already murdered at least one man himself and Serena’s wrath knows no limits. She and her deranged, one-handed henchman (creepy Rhys Ifans) proceed to kill business partners and a little old lady. Then they go after that baby.

Susanne Bier is clearly an intelligent, cinematically astute filmmaker and SERENA, with its gorgeous landscape lensing by Morten Sorberg, looks fantastic. The direction of the opening scenes is superb – the reality and the danger of the huge logs are caught in a way that defines the men and their job better than any dialogue could. The biggest problem with SERENA is that it goes from the story of a strong woman who shows how she can well-handle a man’s job to a throat-slashing thriller with little warning. The script never well-establishes exactly when Serena goes from composed newlywed to scheming cutthroat – it’s like she wakes up one morning a homicidal, baby-killing nutjob. That’s more a problem with the script as Lawrence does her best. She’s always an interesting actress and does period well. Cooper is fine in a less-complicated role and Toby Jones steals a few scenes as a conflicted sheriff. Despite its unconventional journey into theaters, SERENA is worth a look.

THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY – PART 1 – The Review

mockingjay_part_1_5

Let’s get this out of the way: MOCKINGJAY PART 1 is in fact only half of a bigger picture. There’s nothing we can do about this, we just have to deal with it. But before people lump it into the same marketing gimmick as other recent film series that have split the last chapter into several pieces (I’m looking at you TWILIGHT, HARRY POTTER, and THE HOBBIT), the break that happens at the end of this recent entry into the HUNGER GAMES series doesn’t just feel justified, it’s actually completely necessary. In a way it ends in a manner that seems akin to EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. We know that our main hero is at a turning point and that a break is necessary for them to gather their thoughts before venturing into “the final battle.”

The journey of Katniss Everdeen is one that has been a rocky one for me. Although I enjoyed the first film even with its tired depiction of a dystopian future where the poor services the rich and even provides them entertainment at the cost of their own lives, the second film felt like more of the same ideas and visuals but book ended with a few scenes that took the story into new territory. MOCKINGJAY is completely that new territory the last film teased. Gone is the dog-eat-dog survival game and in its place is a rather ambitious story showing the fog of war. At times it reminded me of a young adult version of Paul Verhoeven’s STARSHIP TROOPERS in that we see the manipulation that the leaders of each side use to control their troops. MOCKINGJAY may not have the bitter irony that that 1997 anti-war film perfected, but it’s worthy of applause for the audacity to explore such issues as the life of a soldier, PTSD, the exploitation of the media, and how individuals are used as symbols for a cause. This is especially bold considering that the main audience who will be exposed to this film is made up of naive teenagers.

mockingjay_part_1_2

After being rescued from the previous Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) finds herself being held in a secret underground bunker in District 13 that houses the rebel faction that is fighting against the Capitol. Under the guidance of President Coin (Julianne Moore), Katniss is forced into a position to become the leader and symbol of the rebellion. She is the “mockingjay,” and it is through video transmissions of her actions that other districts are inspired to fight back against President Snow (Donald Sutherland) and his oppressive government.

One of the things I found most troubling with the film is the ambivalence you feel towards the Capitol and the rebel army. Of course you hate the Capitol and what they stand for, but you feel just as weary about suiting up for the resistance. We see how the leaders use Katniss as an instrument to achieve their goals. It’s their treatment of her as a pawn that made me uncomfortable throughout the film. Typically films of this nature you have one clear side you are rooting for. Such is not the case here. Katniss has now become the sole reason to watch the films and the only good person to root for. And even after this overly dramatic turn from Jennifer Lawrence, it’s barely enough to keep me fighting on.

Lawrence spends much of the film reacting in dramatic fashion to the events she’s seeing in front of her, listening to what is being told to her, or videos she’s watching on television. It becomes a series of reactionary events without much response on her part. When the film isn’t interested in her fever-pitched emotions then it delivers on what some of the young teens girls are pining for: the will they or won’t they relationship between Katniss and Gale. A few new faces are thrown in to spice up things, but are only there to elevate Katniss’ story. Considering how threatening Donald Sutherland has been in previous entries, I found him criminally underused considering we are now in the second to last chapter of this story. Thankfully though there is one long sequence later on in the film where Sutherland takes a hold of the screen and is given some room to spread his evil wings.

There are a few moments of tense action in PART 1 – one particular scene where Katniss leads a group of fighters through District 8 after visiting some survivors at a hospital is a great set-piece that recalls the war flash-backs from the first TERMINATOR film – but it looks like we will have to wait for PART 2 to really see Katniss kick some ass. MOCKINGJAY PART 1 is a solid entry that surprisingly can stand on its own without feeling like it’s cheating the audience. Even though this is probably my favorite film in the series because it gave me more meat to chew on than the previous films, I still think that this series is best served as a satisfying dish to fans of the book series.

Overall rating: 3 out of 5
