TRON LEGACY Trailer Hits the Net

Painful admission, I know, but, until recently, I haven’t been a part of the TRON LEGACY buzz.  I understood it.  The original, 1982 film is considered a classic by many, and is a part of that year that is forever remembered as the greatest year for sci-fi film.  But, I have never been a huge fan, and the thought of a sequel 28 years in the making didn’t peak my excitement meter.

Then, I went to see ALICE IN WONDERLAND in 3-D.  This trailer played in front of it, and I was immediately sold.  Everything about this trailer exudes cool, builds a sense of epic mystery, and dares to toy with the notion that this is going to be more than just a run-of-the-mill sequel to capitalize on a successful brand.

It’s an adjective I have been trying to use less and less of, but there is no getting around it with this TRON LEGACY trailer.  It is awesome.  From the amazing visual effects to the incredible music.  Hell, even Bruce Boxleitner pops up to give a little setup.  It is, for lack of a better word, the perfect trailer, and, dare I say, it builds more excitement for TRON LEGACY than the IRON MAN 2 trailer did for it.

But, don’t take my word for it.  Click on Bad Blake’s eyes, head over to program-glitch-esc.net and see for yourself.  Be sure to crank those speakers, too, because this is one to experience.

TRON LEGACY is set to hit theaters on December 17th.

First Look At The Dude from TRON: LEGACY!

I am extremely excited to see TRON: LEGACY. With the footage from Comic-Con and the score from Daft Punk, there is already so much to be excited for. /Film brings us a first look at Mr. Jeff Bridges (reprising his role as Kevin Flynn from the first film) with some sort of glowing disc on his back. Very simple photo, yet as stated in /Film’s article, it is very good to see Bridges mimicking his same look from the awesome Comic-Con footage. Check out the full quality picture over at /Film!

As I said, I am very very excited for this flick!

Review: CRAZY HEART

If you were to dig up and dust off your old Encyclopedia Britannica and locate the phrase “washed up” its possible you’ll find Bad Blake’s picture listed. The only hitch is that Bad Blake doesn’t exist. At least, he doesn’t exist as his own person but exists as a symbol for so many artists who have endured a similar self-induced sacrifice on their own lives in the pursuit of their craft. The troubling dilemma becomes deciding between the art and the people you love.

Actor turned writer-director Scott Cooper makes his feature film debut with CRAZY HEART, based on the novel by Thomas Cobb. This is the story of Bad Blake, a washed up country-western singer and songwriter who travels the southwest in his beat-down 1978 Suburban he calls Bessie, performing tiny gigs in hole-in-the-wall dives and bowling alleys. Blake hates that his career has ended up here, but he does it despite his frustration in an attempt to make ends meet.

Jeff Bridges is outstanding as the run-down, alcoholic Blake, fighting the battle of the booze while still somehow maintaining his knack for song. The opening scene sums up the character with humor and blunt bravado, as Blake steps out of his Bessie and reluctantly prepares to perform a gig in the Spare Room. Despite his inner turmoil, Blake always humbles himself before his adoring fans, those old enough to know who he is, and generally takes his frustration out on his tough-nosed but understanding manager who books his gigs.

The sprawling vistas of the southwest featured throughout CRAZY HEART are more than just pretty to look at, serving as visual reminders of the loneliness that Blake endures on the road and without a soul in the world to love and be loved by. That all begins to change when Blake meets a small town reporter named Jean (Maggie Gyllenhaal) who wants to interview the country music legend. Blake and Jean sort of tumble into a mutual romance, despite their difference in years, but their common thread is the difficult lives they have led.

Gyllenhaal is a breath of fresh air, not so much for a drastic change in approach to her craft, but because she fits the role like your favorite pair of jeans, no pun intended… well, maybe a little. Jean is an attractive young woman whose had her share of heartbreak, but this has made her wise in her limited years. Gyllenhaal’s sad, puppy dog eyes demand empathy as she gives Blake a chance despite her instincts to the contrary. The true turning point however is Jean’s 4-year old son Buddy as Blake embraces the boy as his chance at redemption for a painfully unspoken chapter of his past.

Rounding out the cast of CRAZY HEART is Robert Duvall as Blake’s friend Wayne who owns a bar in Blake’s hometown of Houston. Duvall has a limited role, but his scenes are splendid, especially his fishing trip with Blake. Colin Farrell is the unlikely face as Tommy Sweet, the protégé of and sore spot in Blake’s bruised ego. Initially, seeing Farrell walk on screen as a country-western pop star feels out of place, but he holds his own and does the role justice.

One of the fascinating elements is that Jeff Bridges did his own singing and, surprisingly, it turns out The Dude can actually carry a lovely tune. CRAZY HEART is a film worth experiencing for the music. Watching Bridges breath life into the shattered mirror of the man Blake once was and perform his songs is a revelation of how truly great an actor he is and how deserving he is of finally getting the Academy’s recognition as such.

This is not a film about the modern mediocrity of the country music genre, but rather a testament to what made the music grand during its hay day. Composed by Stephen Bruton and T Bone Burnett, who won four Grammies for O BROTHER WHERE ART THOU, the bluesy country music in CRAZY HEART is a thing of beauty. The song “The Weary Kind” is just the best of the best in terms of the music available on this soundtrack, currently available from New West Records and anxiously awaiting your purchase. Watch for it to potentially upset the favorites in the coming Oscar showdown.

CRAZY HEART is more than just the music, painting a portrait of a troubled man brought to this low in life by his own account. Blake is fully aware of his mistakes in life, but is determined to somehow pull himself out of the ditch and redeem his name, his character and his self worth. CRAZY HEART is both sadly heartbreaking and bittersweet, uplifting in its honesty and candor, just simply brilliant!

Jeff Bridges In CRAZY HEART Trailer… Is An Oscar Far Behind?

crazyheartheader

Yesterday, WAMG’s showed you the new poster for CRAZY HEART with  four-time Academy Award nominee, Jeff Bridges. In the past few weeks, Bridges has jumped to the front of the line on most of the Oscar pundits lists in the Best Actor category  as this new trailer for CRAZY HEART clearly shows a new player has entered the race. Sasha Stone over at AWARDS DAILY says it best,  “The Dude may finally see his moment to shine.”

As Tom O’Neil over at THE GOLD DERBY writes:

Jeff Bridges, George Clooney and Colin Firth are front-runners to win. A few weeks ago, Clooney and Firth were ahead after receiving rousing receptions at the Toronto and Venice film festivals, but Bridges is now zooming forward since Fox Searchlight jammed “Crazy Heart” onto the derby track in the home stretch. The four-time loser is an academy fave overdue to win, and he gives a flashy, deeply felt performance as a boozy country crooner.

Most feel, like Scott Feinberg over at AND THE WINNER IS, that this is  Bridges’ year with a interesting article that asks, “Has Jeff Bridges’ Oscar Moment Finally Arrived?”  Feinberg totally validates his  question by writing:

There is one big difference between this role and the four for which Bridges has been Oscar-nominated in the past — his ace in the hole, if you will: he’s playing an alcoholic, and over 82 years of Oscars few sorts of performances – dramatic or comedic — have been nominated for or won the best actor Oscar more often, as you can see for yourself below. Perhaps this is because portraying an alcoholic usually requires an actor to throw vanity to the wind, demonstrate a wide range of physical and emotional behavior, and tug at the heartstrings of audiences.

Kristopher Tapley over at IN CONTENTION states:

But it really does feel like things are going to go Bridges’s way this Oscar season. It’s all just…too difficult to argue with.

One thing to think about…his biggest competition won’t be Clooney or Firth or even Morgan Freeman. As Dave Poland at MCN considers:

Bridges is looking like a strong bet to push to the top of what looks to be one of the weaker Best Actor races in years. But he is less likely, in my opinion, to go there than Christopher Plummer, who is ready for his career achievement nomination for a beautiful, nuanced, loveable turn as Tolstoy in Michael Hoffman’s The Last Station.

On a side note,  this past Saturday  night Jeff Bridges presented an Honorary Oscar to cinematographer Gordon Willis at the Academy’s Governors Awards in Hollywood. Does this picture give us a glimpse of things to come on Oscar night in March? I sure hope so.

Poster for CRAZY HEART looks very dude-ish

crazyheartheader

The new poster for CRAZY HEART showcases Jeff Bridges looking very Dude-ish and that’s never a bad thing. You can see the full poster below, and you can see the synopsis right here:

Four-time Academy Award ® nominee Jeff Bridges stars as the richly comic, semi-tragic romantic anti-hero Bad Blake in the debut feature film CRAZY HEART from writer-director Scott Cooper.  Bad Blake is a broken-down, hard-living country music singer who’s had way too many marriages, far too many years on the road and one too many drinks way too many times. And yet, Bad can’t help but reach for salvation with the help of Jean (Golden Globe ® nominee Maggie Gyllenhaal), a journalist who discovers the real man behind the musician.  As he struggles down the road of redemption, Bad learns the hard way just how tough life can be on one man’s crazy heart.

I am looking forward to this film for a couple of reasons, but mostly because I absolutely love Jeff Bridges and he can do (almost) no wrong in my eyes. Here is the poster:

Coen Bros’ TRUE GRIT Draws Big Names

damon_brolin

Anyone who knows me personally knows that I’m an insatiable uber-fan of the Coen Brothers. They are to my movie world what Quentin Tarantino is to Scott’s. In my eyes, the Coen Brothers can do know wrong and I’m always as eager as a kid on Christmas morning whenever their new film emerges… which is getting to be about as regular as Woody Allen. Naturally, anytime news surfaces on a Coen Brothers production, I’m all over it like stink on… well, you get the picture.

With Jeff Bridges, who last worked with Joel and Ehtan Coen on THE BIG LEBOWSKI, on board to play U.S. Marshall Rooster Cogburn, previously portrayed by John Wayne, two more major stars have entered discussions to become part of the Coen Brothers world. Josh Brolin, who has worked with the Brothers Coen on NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, is in talks to return to the team as The Killer.

Matt Damon is also in talks to play The Lawman who works alongside Cogburn. Damon, being the Coen Brothers rookie, should choose wisely (meaning, choose YES) if offered a role, as the Coen Brothers are developing the same appeal as being offered a role in a Woody Allen movie… you simply do NOT turn it down! Damon has increasingly become a popular candidate for edgy or high profile filmmakers, last appearing in Steven Soderbergh’s THE INFORMANT, although that relationship is anything but “new” anymore. His next film due out in theaters is Clint Eastwood’s INVICTUS.

Fantastic Fest 2009: ‘The Men Who Stare At Goats’ Review

men who stare at goats

Note: The version of The Men Who Stares At Goats was still extremely rough when I saw it. There were color correction issues and sound editing that needed to be taken care of. It lacked a several effects and had filler stock footage and music for some moments, that having been said this is what I felt about it.

Grant Heslov’s The Men Who Stare At Goats is a mess. It’s uneven and doesn’t know what kind of music it wants to be. The basic premise is that the military starts a group of soldiers called Jedi and their platoons is part of the New Earth Army. They’re lead by Bill Django (Jeff Bridges), who realized during Vietnam that if they’re going to change the world they need to start with the armies.

Our main character however is Bob Wilton (Ewan McGregor), a down on his luck small town reporter, who follows a lead which eventually brings him to the middle east where he dreams of being a combat reporter in the middle of it all. Instead he finds himself with Lyn Cassady (George Clooney), one of the members, and probably the best Jedi in the New Earth Army. He’s on a mission and is convinced that Bob’s destiny is part of it.

This is all well and good but the movie doesn’t know where to go from there. Our heroes get into situations that are random and do nothing to really move the story around. It’s like a bad middle east road trip movie. The pacing her is a complete mess.

Where the movie really shines is in the flash back moments with Clooney and Bridges. They’re chemistry together, what little we get of it, is awesome. Clooney also steals the scene anytime he’s on screen. McGregor’s character is so bland and boring, that it’s just hard to like him at all.

The conclusions in the film are the worst part of all. They don’t wrap anything together and the antagonist which is Kevin Spacey’s Larry Hooper, literally walks off screen one second and we don’t hear what happens to him the rest of the film. He get’s one of the biggest disservices I’ve ever seen.

I cant’ recommend this movie if this is how it’s going to be. It’s only 95 minutes without credits and it’s still too long. You could cut ten minutes of the movie out easily and it’d be a much better film, but then it’d be too short.  There are some genuinely laugh out loud moments from the film, but they’re few and far between and not enough to c.arry the film

‘The Men Who Stare at Goats’ Want You to Stare at This Poster

men who stare at goats poster

The reports of Grant Heslov’s feature film debut, ‘The Men Who Stare at Goats,’ coming out of Toronto are mixed.  Some loved it, others were incredibly disappointed in it.  Nonetheless, it remains high up on the list of most anticipated films with us.  This poster helps that fact, as it offers just enough quirky details to get us highly interested.  You gotta love the “and Goat” credit at the top and the fact that the Goat head is included right along with Clooney, Bridges, McGregor, and Spacey.  The tagline, “No Goats, No Glory” is lame, sure, but it still induces a bit of a chuckle.

Mix this poster in with the brilliant trailer, and you’ve got a combination that puts ‘The Men Who Stare at Goats’ instantly on our much-see list.  The film comes out on November 6th.

Does Jeff Bridges have ‘True Grit’ for the Coen Bros?

jeff_bridges_truegrit

Joel and Ethan Coen are gearing up for their first stab at the western genre, remaking the classic TRUE GRIT. Jeff Bridges is currently in negotiations to fill John Wayne’s Oscar-winning shoes as the lead role in the story. Bridges and the Coen Brothers last worked together on THE BIG LEBOWSKI.

The brothers Coen have apparently re-written the screenplay for their version to be more faithful to Charles Portis’ novel than the original 1969 film had been. The story follows Rooster Cogburn, an aging US Marshall, and a young girl as they track down the killer that murdered the girl’s father. The original film told the story from Cogburn’s perspective, however the Coen Brothers are switching POV and telling the story from the girl’s perspective.

I wouldn’t mind seeing this come to fruitition at all. Jeff Bridges is a great actor, familiar with the Coen Brothers and isn’t foreign to the western genre. Bridges’ first role in a western was as Jake Rumsey in Robert Benton’s 1972 genre piece BAD COMPANY, later to play Wild Bill Kickock in 1995 for Walter Hill in WILD BILL. Without a doubt, this new version of TRUE GRIT is going to be incredible.
