37 INK, a new imprint of Atria Books, will publish hardcover and ebook editions of THE BUTLER on Tuesday, July 30.
The film, which opens on August 16, is set against the tumultuous political backdrop of 20th century America.
The historical epic Lee Daniels’ THE BUTLER tells the story of fictional White House butler Cecil Gaines (Forest Whitaker), who serves during seven presidential administrations between 1957 and 1986. Inspired by Wil Haygood’s 2008 Washington Post article “A Butler Well Served by This Election” about the real life of former butler Eugene Allen, the film begins in 1926 with a young Cecil living in the fiercely segregated South and facing the tyranny of the region’s prejudices. After years spent working in a hotel, Cecil is discovered by a White House employee, which leads to the opportunity of a lifetime: a job as a server at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. There, Cecil becomes a firsthand witness to history and the inner workings of the Oval Office as the civil rights movement unfolds.
At the same time, he and his volatile but loving wife (Oprah Winfrey) must grapple with the rebellious spirit of their son Louis (David Oyelowo) whose tenacious hunger for activism and equal rights often puts him in dangerous situations – and at perpetual odds with his father. While Cecil remains fiercely committed to his duties at the White House and to providing for his family, his determination leads to increasing tensions between him and his anti-establishment son.
Through the eyes and emotions of the Gaines family, Daniels’ film follows the changing tides of American politics and race relations; from the assassinations of John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr., to the Freedom Riders and Black Panther movements, to the war in Vietnam and the Watergate scandal, Cecil experiences the effects of these events as both an insider and a family man.

This weekend Hollywood was responsible for Los Angeles’ recent major road closure as the production of WALK OF SHAME stopped traffic – literally! – inspiring the term Shameaggedon. The comedy, starring Elizabeth Banks, James Marsden and Gillian Jacobs, currently in production in Los Angeles closed the roads due to filming – taking over the 710 Freeway from the 10 Freeway to the Valley Boulevard exit. The road closures lasted over six hours both Saturday, February 2 and Sunday, February 3.
Written & directed by Steve Brill (WITHOUT A PADDLE, MR. DEEDS), WALK OF SHAME stars Banks as an aspiring reporter whose dreams of becoming a network news anchor are compromised after a one-night stand with a handsome stranger (played by Marsden) leaves her stranded in downtown Los Angeles without a phone, car, ID or money – and only 8 hours to make it to the most important job interview of her life.
Saturday and Sunday (also known as Super Bowl Sunday) traffic on the 10 was diverted to other exits such as Fremont and Eastern, while traffic heading north on the 710 Freeway was diverted onto the 10 East and West to Fremont or Eastern.
WALK OF SHAME, which commenced principal photography in January, will wrap next month and is projected to hit theatres some time early next year. Produced by Lakeshore Entertainment and Sidney Kimmel Entertainment, the film’s cast has been rounded out by an impressive group of comedic talent including Bill Burr, Liz Carey, Ken Davitian, Willie Garson, Lawrence Gilliard Jr., Oliver Hudson, Alphonso McAuley, Kevin Nealon, Tig Notaro, Ethan Suplee and Sarah Wright. This group joins the previously announced actors Elizabeth Banks, James Marsden and Gillian Jacobs. The film is being distributed through FilmDistrict.
Currently in post-production, Radiant Films International has announced it will be handling the foreign rights to the heartwarming comedy drama AS COOL AS I AM. Starring Claire Danes (“Homeland,” THE HOURS), James Marsden (X-MEN), Sarah Bolger (THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES), Thomas Mann (PROJECT X), Jeremy Sisto (ROBOT & FRANK) and two time Academy Award nominee Peter Fonda (ULEE’S GOLD), the film centers around a bright and intelligent teenage girl, Lucy (Bolger) and her almost boyfriend Kenny (Mann), who come of age in a small rural town. With her often absent and very young parents (Marsden and Danes) more in need of guidance and parenting than their daughter, Lucy turns to cooking shows to cope with the turbulent pains of adolescence and finds particular comfort in the celebrated culinary personality, Mario Batali. While Lucy charges ahead toward womanhood and her dream of becoming a chef, her mother is desperately searching for her own bigger life in this family comedy filled with laughter, tears, sex, love and pasta.
AS COOL AS I AM is from director Max Mayer (ADAM) and writer by Virginia Korus Spragg (AN UNFINISHED LIFE) based on the novel by Pete Fromm. Mayer’s feature film ADAM, starring Hugh Dancy and Rose Byrne, won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. Radiant’s sales slate will include the newly announced THE CITIZEN and TRUST ME. THE CITIZEN tells the story of an Arab immigrant named Ibrahim (played by celebrated Egyptian actor Khaled Nabawy from FAIR GAME) who wins the American green card lottery, arriving in New York City on September 10th, 2001. In addition to Nabawy, the film’s cast includes Agnes Bruckner (BLOOD AND CHOCOLATE), William Atherton (GHOSTBUSTERS) and Cary Elwes (THE PRINCESS BRIDE).
Currently shooting, TRUST ME is a dark comedy written, directed and starring Clark Greggabout the world of child stars. The film stars Gregg, as a former child star who has become a loser agent of young actors, when he stumbles across a child prodigy, played by newcomer Saxon Sharbino. The ensemble cast also includes Amanda Peet, Paul Sparks, Felicity Huffman, Allison Janney, William H. Macy, Molly Shannon, Niecy Nashand Sam Rockwell. Radiant’s AFM slate is rounded out by Andrew Levitas’ drama, LULLABY, MADAME BOVARY starring Mia Wasikowska, Paul Giamatti and Ezra Miller, and THE YELLOW HANDKERCHIEF with William Hurt, Maria Bello and Kristen Stewart.
Here’s a flick that opened with little fanfare. It may be tough to find, but it’s certainly worth the effort. I mentioned it to some friends, and I could almost hear their eyes roll when I told them the title over the phone, ” Yeah, that’s right. It’s called ROBOT & FRANK . No, really.”. I’m sure they imagined a zany, hi-tech buddy movie. Summing up the plot probably didn’t change their minds. But it’s a surprisingly moving, warm little character study with a top-notch performance at its center. Basically it’s perfect little film to watch on a rainy day. Or any kind of day, really. I just hope it gets a little love from the year-end best lists and award nominations.
As the film opens, we’re told it’s the near future ( not the far future like TV’s ” The Jetsons ” with their flying cars ). Frank ( Frank Langella ) is an ex-con ( did a couple stretches for burglary ) living alone in his old two-story country house in the woods of New York state. His marriage ended long ago and his kids, Hunter ( James Marsden ) and Madison ( Liv Tyler ) have grown and left the nest. But Hunter is concerned because Frank is losing the battle against senility ( or perhaps Alzheimer’s ). Frank doesn’t keep the place clean or eat right. The only exercise he gets is from strolling into town to flirt with the pretty librarian Jennifer ( Susan Sarandon ). So, there’s no way that he’s gonna move out and live in one of those assisted care places. So, Hunter presents Frank with the gift of a service robot, a VGC-6OL ( performed by Rachael Ma, voiced by Peter Sarsgaard ). The little bot cleans, cooks, and nags Frank ( ” It is time to get up.” ” Let’s start a garden” ). Frank’s annoyed til he realizes that the bot is the perfect accomplice. He’ll convince the bot that it would be great therapy and exercise to do a ” job ” . Seems that Frank has some new yuppie neighbors with a taste for jewelry. At last, Frank is back in ” the game”!
Has it really been 35 years since Langella made the ladies swoon as the cape-twirling immortal Count on Broadway ( and then starring on the screen in 1979’s DRACULA ) ? At an age when most actors are eyeing retirement, he’s doing some of his best screen work ( FROST / NIXON ). Now add his addled, cat burglar to his list of recent triumphs. This guy is not going gently into that good night. He’s regretful, bored, but mostly angry at the hand fate has dealt him. You can see the confusion on his face as he realizes that his brain has failed him yet again. He longs for his outlaw days, even using phrases straight from a 1930’s Warner Brothers gangster flick ( ” Crackerjack! ” ” What a maroon! ” ). We can’t help but root for him as he decides to go for one last big score. He’s briefly lifted out of the fog by this mechanical Felix Ungar. And Frank develops real affection for the squirt. Langella’s skill brings out the best in all the actors that share the screen with him. There’s a couple of TV stars that have great bits with the cantankerous con ( won’t name them, so you’ll also be delightfully surprised ). This is Marsden’s second film as Langella’s son ( 2006’s SUPERMAN RETURNS ) and the two have a great rapport. He’s frustrated with his old man, but still has a lot of affection for the stubborn cuss. Tyler also has a great time with Langella as Frank’s globe-trotting Daddy’s girl. And Sarandon is her usual charming self as the local gal enjoying ( and encouraging ) Frank’s flirtations. There’s no big flashy CGI effects that detract from this film’s simple laid-back charms ( a weird car, clear picture phones, etc. ). ROBOT & FRANK is a film that warms the heart and tickles the funny bone. If Frank can warm up to this household tech aid, then maybe the future ( or near future ) will be a pretty nice place.

Written and directed by Rod Lurie (THE CONTENDER, THE LAST CASTLE), STRAW DOGS (2011) is actually a reasonably successful generic popcorn thriller, focused on revenge. On its own, its no better or worse than most of the Hollywood fare churned out each year. However, as a remake to Sam Peckinpah’s film, Lurie fails completely at capturing the same level of deep character development and situational tension. For those viewers who see STRAW DOGS (2011) without having seen the original, a population which is apparently frightfully large, the film works. Unfortunately, for those who’ve seen the original, I fear you’ll find it difficult to look past the remake’s inadequacies and be left with a foul taste in your mouth.
STRAW DOGS (2011) stars James Marsden (X-MEN, ENCHANTED) as David Sumner, making an effort to fill the shoes of Dustin Hoffman. David is an LA screenwriter, educated and relatively well-off compared to the residents of Blackwater, Mississippi. David and his attractive wife Amy (SUPERMAN RETURNS, THE RULES OF ATTRACTIONG) return to Blackwater, her hometown, to temporarily reside in Amy’s recently deceased father’s home while it’s repaired and David works on his latest screenplay.
Right from the beginning, the setup of STRAW DOGS (2011) is clear; city folk versus southern rednecks. On this level, Lurie hits the proverbial mark, turning the deeper, more meaningful film Peckinpah created into little more than an average home invasion flick, less chilling than THE STRANGERS. Charlie, played by Alexander Skarsgard (TRUE BLOOD) leads a pack of four ex-high school football stars from Blackwater, employed by Amy to repair the roof of her father’s barn. As it turns out, Charlie and Amy have a history that is destined to come back on her like bad Indian food.
When in Rome, do as the Romans do. David makes an effort to apply this philosophy to his new, if only temporary home, but Charlie and boys won’t have any of that. This ultimately sets the tone for the rest of the film. Marsden does well enough as David, convincingly playing a generic Hollywood screenwriter type. His performance is centered on the trademark glasses worn by Dustin Hoffman in the original, constantly adjusting or fiddling with them as a crutch. I believed he was a pacifist, an atheist, and a coward.
Alexander Skarsgard, on the other hand, was probably the one factor in Lurie’s remake that I truly looked forward to, but found myself deeply disappointed. His performance was not bad, but rather very, very familiar. Charlie was essentially a slightly toned down version of Eric Northman from True Blood. I give Skarsgard credit for being really good at playing sophisticated creepy roles, even as a redneck, but there wasn’t enough depth to his performance and far too much of what we see so often on the HBO series. Regardless, he does offer some enjoyable moments in STRAW DOGS, so I can’t bring myself to write him off completely. Kate Bosworth is skinny, and she cries a lot in the second half.
Rod Lurie borrows heavily from Peckinpah’s visual repertoire with several shot-for-shot translations, including the final shot. He also delves into the genre pool of kill scenes, extracting moments of graphic violence that feel a little out of place in this remake but serve up excitement for the general audience like football fans rambunctiously hootin’ and hollerin’ over their home team’s touchdown. Amidst these vividly bloody moments is the final kill, with which I have a continuity issue.
Two performances truly stand out, but for two very different reasons. Dominic Purcell (BLADE: TRINITY) struggles with the role of Jeremy Niles, a mentally challenged man who is cast out and misunderstood by the town of Blackwater. He is the brother of Daniel, played by the terribly miscast Walton Goggins (JUSTIFIED). One of Lurie’s biggest mistakes was not casting Goggins as one of the four “straw dogs,” the term used by David to describe how Charlie and his boys fit into society. On the flip side, Lurie was brilliant for casting James Woods as the alcoholic, racist Coach Tom Heddon.
STRAW DOGS (2011) is well-shot, especially the opening sequence that develops the southern, swampy setting, even though the film doesn’t take place in a swamp. Lurie’s version makes no effort to embrace the gritty atmosphere of Peckinpah’s original, except for that final shot. I have a feeling this film will do fairly well at the box office, but will have to compete with Ryan Gosling’s meteoric new popularity as DRIVE opens simultaneously. For fans of Sam Peckipah’s original, I simply recommend avoiding this failed remake.
On September 16th, things will become gravely serious for Kate Bosworth and James Marsden as seen in this new preview for director Rod Lurie’s upcoming STRAW DOGS. The Screen Gems’ thriller also stars Alexander Skarsgård, Dominic Purcell, Laz Alonso, Willa Holland and James Woods.
Synopsis:
David and Amy Sumner (James Marsden and Kate Bosworth), a Hollywood screenwriter and his actress wife, return to her small hometown in the deep South to prepare the family home for sale after her father’s death. Once there, tensions build in their marriage and old conflicts re-emerge with the locals, including Amy’s ex-boyfriend Charlie (Alexander Skarsgård), leading to a violent confrontation.
