McG Talks TERMINATOR 5

Joseph McGinty Nichol, otherwise known as McG for those of you who still like to refer to him as that, participated in a BD-Live chat yesterday for TERMINATOR SALVATION.  Among the many points that came up during the chat (McG putting down TERMINATOR 3, saying he only watched one episode of THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES, and Hitler…yes, Hitler was mentioned at some point) was the possibility of TERMINATOR 5.  McG is still  adamant  that a TERMINATOR 5 and TERMINATOR 6 are still happening and that he is the director on duty for both of them.

We’ll see how this ultimately plays out considering the rights are still up in the air and could fall into anyone’s arms at this point.  Halcyon said this past week that the auction could come to a conclusion on February 1st.  I would like to point out how disheartening it is the thought that in 5 to 10 years we could have more TERMINATOR films that have been directed by McG than those directed by James Cameron.

He did claim on the BD-Live chat that Sarah Connor would be making an appearance in the next film and that there was a chance Robert Patrick may make an appearance as a scientist who becomes the model for the T-1000.

Seriously, though, take all of this with a big, heaping spoonful of salt, because once these rights issues are sorted out, there is no telling what direction the TERMINATOR franchise may take.  For now, though, it seems McG is ready and willing to take on a fifth and sixth film.

TERMINATOR Rights Getting Auctioned Off

The proposed fifth installment in the TERMINATOR franchise will have to sit on the back-burner, as, according to the Financial Times, the rights to the franchise are to be auctioned off later this month.

With the TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES property getting picked up by Nickelodeon for $60 million a few weeks ago and Disney purchasing Marvel for $4 billion in late August, the chances of a studio paying a hefty price for something like TERMINATOR seems pretty likely.  According to the Financial Times, the  front runner  to do just that is Sony Pictures.  Summit Entertainment and Media Rights Capital are also tracking the sale.

The rights are being sold by The Halcyon Company, who picked up the rights themselves in 2007 for $25 million.  While their entry, TERMINATOR SALVATION, brought in $380 million in worldwide box office, the company filed Chapter 11 after a conflict was raised between them and Pacificor, the company that lent them the money to make the film.  The rights being sold off are not for properties already created in the franchise, but for future films and TV spin-offs.

Philip K. Dick’s ‘Flow My Tears’ Off to the Big Screen

Yet another Philip K. Dick sci-fi novel is getting the feature film adaptation treatment.   ‘Flow My Tears’ will be based on the novel Flow My Tears, The Policeman Said, the 1974 novel about identity loss.   Halcyon Co., the company behind ‘Terminator Salvation,’ picked up the rights to the novel back in ’07.   They are planning on making this the next project on their slate.

‘Flow My Tears’ tells the story of celebrity entertainer Jason Taverner, who, after a former lover throws a parasitic lifeform at him, awakes to find no one in the world has ever heard of him.

Dick’s works have been adapted for the big screen a number of times before.   Among films based, most of them loosely, on works by Philip K. Dick are ‘Blade Runner,’ ‘Total Recall,’ and ‘Minority Report.’   Each of these films, even ‘Blade Runner,’ have been chastised in the past for taking huge liberties with Dick’s works.   ‘A Scanner Darkly’ seems to be the most faithful film to come out of one of Dick’s novels, but even that film doesn’t seem to be an exact interpretation.   Who knows what ‘Flow My Tears’ will have to offer.
