Casey Affleck won Best Actor for his work in Kenneth Lonergan’s MANCHESTER BY THE SEA.

After the death of his older brother Joe (Kyle Chandler), Lee Chandler (Casey Affleck) is shocked to learn that Joe has made him sole guardian of his nephew Patrick (Lucas Hedges). Taking leave of his job, Lee reluctantly returns to Manchester-by-the-Sea to care for Patrick, a spirited 16-year-old, and is forced to deal with a past that separated him from his wife Randi (Michelle Williams) and the community where he was born and raised. Bonded by the man who held their family together, Lee and Patrick struggle to adjust to a world without him.

Best Actress went to Isabelle Huppert for ELLE. Michèle seems indestructible. Head of a leading video game company, she brings the same ruthless attitude to her love life as to business. Being attacked in her home by an unknown assailant changes Michèle’s life forever. When she resolutely tracks the man down, they are both drawn into a curious and thrilling game-a game that may, at any moment, spiral out of control. The film, which also won Best Foreign Language, is directed by Paul Verhoeven.

In the supporting acting categories, Viola Davis won for her work in FENCES while Aaron Taylor-Johnson took home a Globe for NOCTURNAL ANIMALS.

Meryl Streep was honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Award. At the end of her acceptance speech, Streep said, “Once when I was standing around on the set one day, whining about something, you know, we were going to work through supper or the long hours or whatever, Tommy Lee Jones said to me, “Isn’t it such a privilege, Meryl, just to be an actor?” Yeah, it is, and we have to remind each other of the privilege and the responsibility of the act of empathy. We should all be very proud of the work Hollywood honors here tonight. As my friend, the dear departed Princess Leia said to me once, “Take your broken heart. Make it into art.” Thank you, friend.”

BOYHOOD Takes Home The Golden Globe for Best Picture

Boyhood

The awards season shows kicked off with the 72nd annual Golden Globes on Sunday, where the coming-of-age drama BOYHOOD was the night’s big winner.

Richard Linklater’s 12-years-in-the-making movie won Best Drama, as well as Best Director for Linklater and Best Supporting Actress for Patricia Arquette.

Taking out her written speech, Arquette apologized: “I’m the only nerd with a piece of paper.”

“Bottom line is we’re all flawed in this world. No one’s perfect,” said Linklater, accepting his directing Globe. “I want to dedicate this to parents that are evolving everywhere and families that are just passing through this world and doing their best.”

The star-studded ceremony, hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler for the third year in a row, aired live coast-to-coast on NBC.

The night seemed to be setting up for the top two Oscar contenders – BOYHOOD and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s BIRDMAN – to lead the Globes’ twin categories of drama and comedy. But in a major surprise, Wes Anderson’s GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL swooped in to win best picture, comedy or musical. He listed a mock thank you to the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press, the collection of mostly freelance foreign journalists who put on the Globes, naming “Yorum and Dagmar and Yukiko and Mounawar.”

The elegantly crafted backstage romp BIRDMAN nevertheless won Best Actor in a comedy or musical for its lead, Michael Keaton, who plays a former superhero star mounting a serious play on Broadway, and Best screenplay.

Reflecting on his life, Keaton’s voice broke up as he thanked his son, whom he called his best friend. “Shoot,” said Keaton. “Two things I said I wasn’t going to do: cry and give air quotes.”

In one of the evening’s most hotly contested categories, Best Actor in a drama, Eddie Redmayne won for his performance as Stephen Hawking in THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING.

Julianne Moore won Best Actress in a drama for her startling performance as an academic with early on-set Alzheimer’s in STILL ALICE.

Amy Adams surprised in taking Best Actress in a comedy or musical for her performance in BIG EYES ”I didn’t even reapply lip gloss,” said an unprepared Adams.

The first award of the night went to J.K. Simmons for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as a domineering jazz teacher in the acclaimed indie WHIPLASH.

Video – Tina Fey And Amy Poehler Hosting 2014 Golden Globes

TINA FEY and AMY POEHLER

Get ready for the Year of the Woman this Awards Season. In August, the Academy announced Ellen DeGeneres as host of the upcoming Oscars for a second time. (DeGeneres hosted the 79th Academy Awards in 2007)

Today the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced that Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will return as hosts of the 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards.

In this video, Poehler talks about how little she and Fey will prepare when they return to host the 2014 Golden Globes, January 12, 2014 on NBC. The dynamic duo will also have the gig for the 72nd Annual Golden Globe Awards in 2015.

The two funny ladies hosted the 70th Golden Globe Awards earlier this year. Actor Ricky Gervais previously hosted the show three times in a row between 2010 and 2012.

Both Poehler and Fey can be seen together this December in ANCHORMAN 2: THE LEGEND CONTINUES.

Amy Poehler is co-starring as the voice of ‘Jenny’ in the animated film FREE BIRDS (Nov. 1), while Tina Fey will play ‘Nadya’ in Disney’s MUPPETS MOST WANTED (2014).

Hollywood Foreign Press Files Suit Against Golden Globe Producers Dick Clark Productions

According to the LA Times, the Hollywood Foreign Press Assoc., aka The Golden Globes, is suing Dick Clark Productions, which has produced the awards show for almost two decades. No love-loss there, eh?

The suit alleges that Dick Clark Productions, or DCP — a unit of Red Zone Capital, a private equity firm headed by Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder — has breached its contract with the association on several fronts, including secretly signing an extension of NBC’s current agreement to air the Golden Globes. The suit was filed Wednesday afternoon in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

Under the terms of the current deal between the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. and DCP, the production company gets 50% of the net profit the show generates. The agreement between the association and Dick Clark Productions ends after this January’s Golden Globes. NBC will pay $13.3 million in rights fees to telecast that show, according to a person familiar with the pact.

Though the two sides do not have a new deal, the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. said DCP at the end of October signed a new rights deal with NBC that runs from 2012 through 2018. The price tag for that deal goes from $17 million in 2012 to $26 million in 2018. The HFPA thinks that price undervalues the franchise.

The association said Dick Clark Productions signed the deal with NBC “all behind HFPA’s back and all the while pretending to negotiate a new contract with HFPA.”

Furthermore, the suit charges DCP with trying to “exploit the Golden Globe-related marks, license the digital and other ancillary rights, create promotional campaigns, or sell sponsorships” without permission. The association said it has never given up those rights and Dick Clark Productions is “trying to steal them.”

The Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. also accuses Red Zone and DCP of doing secret deals with sponsors and keeping the money for itself, all as part of a plan to take over the Globes.

The suit seeks a preliminary and permanent injunction against Dick Clark Productions and Red Zone from using the Globe trademarks for anything not related to this January’s show.

Statement from Dick Clark Productions:

“The Hollywood Foreign Press Assn., knowing it has no case in a court of law, is attempting to try this case in the court of public opinion.”

“We are confident the case has no merit in either venue. Our respective rights under the contract are clear. The HFPA cannot unilaterally change the basis on which DCP and the HFPA have done business for almost three decades.”

According to Nielsen, The 2010 Golden Globes drew 17.2 million viewers on NBC, up 14% from 2009.

What would a theater be without movie posters adorning the walls as you walk in.  For those who aren’t avid  readers of  WAMG,  it can be  the first  glimpse of your average  film-goer  to an upcoming picture – be it next month or even next year. Get The Big  Picture, believing “movie posters are their own animal,” (hear, hear!)  has  a full display of  what they believe to be the best movie posters of 2008. And while I’m on the subject , here’s the poster for this year’s Golden Globes – hosted, or tag-teamed,  by the trio of  Jake Gyllenhaal, Glenn Close, and my personal favorite, Ricky Gervais! IMO, Gervais should host the Globes solo – he was the only highlight of the Emmys in September.

Is a Les Grossman Movie on the Way?

It’s not surprise to anyone who saw ‘Tropic Thunder’ that the biggest surprise of the film was Tom Cruise’s turn as megalomaniacal film producer, Les Grossman. Â  Robert Downey, Jr’s performance was great, as it was expected to be, but Cruise’s foul-mouthed performance as Grossman was a huge surprise.

Eonline caught up with Cruise about his Golden Globe nomination for ‘Tropic Thunder’. Â  They didn’t care what the star thought about it. Â  They wanted to know what Grossman would think about it.

“Les would probably say something unprintable,” Cruise told me today in an exclusive interview. “First thing when you hear about that character is, just what would that guy say? It would have to be something unprintable.”

Cruise went on to talk about the potentiality of a Les Grossman film.

“I’ve talked about doing different videos with the character,” Cruise said. “I’ve started working with Ben [Stiller] on it, and we’ve kind of talked about different things to do. We were gonna do some in our free time, but we haven’t found the free time†¦yet.”

He doesn’t rule out a full-length feature film centered on Grossman: “He’s a fun character,” said Cruise, who will next be seen in the real-life WWII thriller ‘Valkyrie’. “I gotta talk to Ben, but there could be more to do with that guy.”

What do you think? Â  Would a Les Grossman movie be too much? Â  Would you rather see a straight sequel to ‘Tropic Thunder’ that brought back all the (surviving) characters? Â  Let us know by commenting below!
