GLEE: THE 3D CONCERT MOVIE – The Review

For those of you that are not already aware… I am a GLEEK. I absolutely adore the television show! Having said that, I am going to keep (or at least attempt to keep) my review as objective as possible.

GLEE: THE 3D CONCERT MOVIE is… well… just what it says in the title. It is a 3D concert put on by the cast of GLEE, while they remain in their characters from the show. Rachel Berry (Lea Michele), Finn Hudson (Corey Monteith), Blaine Anderson (Darren Criss), Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer), Brittany Pierce (Heather Morris), Artie Abrams (Kevin McHale), Mercedes Jones (Amber Riley), Noah ‘Puck’ Puckerman (Mark Salling), Quinn Fabray (Dianna Agron), and the rest of the cast, as well as a few surprises make their way on stage performing songs from the hit FOX television show.

After seeing such films as JUSTIN BIEBER: NEVER SAY NEVER in 3D, I have to say that I was somewhat disappointed in this film. First off, this is supposed to be a concert put on by New Horizons, the show choir from William McKinley High School, which is all fictional. They keep the actors in character, which is understandable for what they are trying to do, but for some odd reason it just doesn’t work well. I think it’s because when they show the preparation for the show, with the cast members backstage, it feels too fake. Part of the appeal (for a 3D concert film) is to see real preparation. I want to experience the real emotions that the singer/musician/dancer etc. is going through before they go onstage, and even catch some real shenanigans behind the scenes. By having actors respond as their characters just really took me out of things. I don’t know… I really enjoy how they do things on the show, but it just wasn’t executed very well for the film. Maybe it’s because the characters we all know and love are underdogs, yet they are playing a big concert. It could have all been thought out and executed in a much better fashion.

Another giant disappointment is the fact that they do not play songs in their entirety. Instead, they do snippets, and then cut to clips, or the behind the scenes footage. The songs are all rushed. With the word “concert” in the title, I expected to hear the songs in their entirety! I don’t need all of that filler. Give me the songs that I have grown to love! With all of the random filler, they should have given it a different title. One of my favorite concert films is THE LAST WALTZ, which is the last concert, in entirety, by The Band. I am certainly not trying to compare the two films, because I am a firm believer in taking each movie for what it is worth… for what it is meant to be, but a concert film should be a concert. THE LAST WALTZ didn’t need filler, flashy effects, or extra content, it was about the music. The music from the show is what fans are there to see, and GLEE: THE 3D CONCERT MOVIE should have delivered with, at least, that much.

The 3D itself was ok. It could have been better, but it also could have been worse. Still, there was no real need for it. If it were a real concert movie, it could have been a cool tool (hehe… I rhymed!) in making the audience feel more involved in the show. I’m getting kind of tired of the overuse of 3D when it is not necessary.

Also, anything more than a few shots of screaming fans is always too much… (I really don’t think I need to add more to that.)

So… the film was entertaining, but the filler and lack of complete songs left me slightly annoyed! (Don’t worry… I still love GLEE!)

For two years, we’ve been mercilessly bombarded with the pubescent nonsense of carnival sideshow freaks calling themselves “The Glee Club.” These tone deaf, howler monkeys conned the plebian masses into downloading millions of songs; won Emmy Awards and Golden Globes; and have charted more singles than the Beatles. Roll over Beethoven, something stinks, and it ain’t the cheese, it’s The Glee Club.

And now, they’re trying to shove a 3-D concert movie down our throats.

It is with this declaration that I put forth this nation’s most important initiative since the McCarthy hearings: The Sue Sylvester “STOP BELIEVING” campaign.

It’s time to make a stand against these pimply-faced, hormone-ridden twits by joining the “STOP BELIEVING” campaign on Her inaugural journey. Say “NO” to their insignificant cinematic experiment. I don’t know about you, but I can’t stand looking at their little satanic faces in 2-D, much less 3D.

Watching this movie is not only an atrocity to this great nation, but it’s also bad for your health. If I may be so bold as to quote Dr. Charlie Sheen out of context, “Your face will melt off, and your children will weep over your exploded body.”

General public, join me and together, we can put an end to this vomit-inducing, ear-ringing virus called The Glee Club.

New Season Surprises, and Some Not So Surprising

glee2

With all the new shows that the networks put out it can be hard to tell which ones will be sure fire hits and which ones just won’t click with anybody, not no way not no how.   So I decided to look at the new shows this season, the ones that are still around anyway, and look at the new stock that are doing surprisingly well and the ones that shouldn’t be too surprising are hits.   And I’d like to give a shout out to Trauma. Sorry Trauma, but it looks like the world doesn’t need yet another medical show, but at least Mercy seems to be hanging in there for the moment.

The Surprising:

1. Cougar Town- I’m sorry but I thought this show had disaster written all over it.   Mostly for the fact that its main focus is to just jumping on a fad that has sprouted up in recent years, a fad of super hot older women.   I guess that shouldn’t be too surprising of a draw but it just seems like the light version of Desperate Housewives with a one joke premise.   Plus after the failure of her show Dirt I’m surprised anyone really wanted to see Courtney Cox helming yet another show.

2. FlashForward-I really thought that this show was going to face an almost expected Heroes like failure, even though Heroes is still on but look at the ratings.   This show on the other hand has ratings to spare.   I guess maybe it’s just it has a Lost style of appeal and a catchy sci-fi plot that people really seem to be digging.   I haven’t really watched it and I’ve heard it’s good so I will at least give it props for that.   But usually good and sci-fi-ish plot don’t mix well with network viewers on a mass scale.

The Not So Surprising:

1.NCIS:Los Angeles-This really has to be at the top of the list because who wouldn’t have seen this being a monster huge hit? It’s become a tired and true formula.take a popular procedural, slap another cities name on the end, and boom you’ve got yourself an all new sure fire ratings hit.   I’m not a huge fan of procedurals or the fact that everyone else seems to love them and watch everyone stupid spin off they shoot down the line.   This one even has the added benefit of Chris O’Donnell and LL Cool Jfor your team up of having two washed up stars being the leads.

2. Glee-Who doesn’t love Glee?   This show had hit written all over it the second it aired on the tube.   You’ve got your basic High School drama that all the teens love these days.   Then you have kids singing harmonized versions of hit songs that I will admit that I even love.   And for added effect you thrown in a little Jane Lynch as one of the best and kookiest villains this side of John Adams High, Boy Meets World reference for all you TV geeks.   So that’s all you really need to have probably the best new show of the season and its future secure for quite awhile.

3. Modern Family-It’s a really a how the whole “modern” family can love.   God I can’t believe I went with that pun.   Anyway, this show is a no surprise hit for a very good reason, it does its humor smart.  It keeps it very family oriented and never going too vulgar but also keeps the jokes fresh and inventive and always with a witty tone.   I watched the pilot and have to say I was convinced enough of the goodness of the show and usually the pilot is the weakest of the episodes you can get.   So it should be no surprise that it keeps chugging along as a hit and one of the better reviewed shows of the season so far.
