Ivan Reitman Directing FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS; GHOSTBUSTERS 3-Not So Fast

Director Ivan Reitman, you’ve been gone too long. Acting as producer for your son, Jason Reitman, and other director’s films doesn’t cut it for me. While you may now be an Oscar-nominated producer for UP IN THE AIR, the last time we saw you in the driver’s seat was for, yikes, 2006’s MY SUPER EX-GIRLFRIEND. This coming from the man who in his heyday brought us such hit comedies as MEATBALLS, STRIPES, and GHOSTBUSTERS thus making Bill Murray a movie star and then you showed us that Arnold Schwarzenegger could be funny in TWINS and JUNIOR. Ok, I thought so.

Needless to say I was happy to hear that Reitman had confirmed he would once again climb into the director’s chair by helming GHOSTBUSTERS 3, until I read in NY Mag’s Vulture blog that Sony/Columbia Pictures reboot pretty much excludes Reitman:

The studio’s strategy is to revitalize the franchise for next year by having the original ‘busters train a dramatically younger crew in Ghostbusters III, while a correspondingly younger director handles things behind the camera. However, Reitman’s old contract, made at the height of his and Ovitz’s powers, still gives him exceptional creative control over the series, including director approval.

As recently as last night, Variety reported that Reitman had plans to direct FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS for Paramount Pictures. Filming is scheduled to begin in May, thus making it very convenient for Columbia what with Reitman being busy with the WHEN HARRY MET SALLY Natalie Portman/Ashton Kutcher comedy. According to Vulture’s exclusive article, “a source close to the project laughed and said, “It’s pretty much what you’d expect from a spec script that was originally entitled FUCKBUDDIES.” Can’t you see that title up on the marquee in movie theaters?

Boy this would work out nicely for Sony if Reitman was busy with the FRIENDS film. However,

Insiders familiar with Reitman’s plans say he thinks the two comedies are not mutually exclusive, and still plans to direct both, raising serious questions about whether Sony will want to proceed with GHOSTBUSTERS III at all.

So while GHOSTBUSTERS 3 is being prepped, Reitman’s FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS is looking at a Jan. 7, 2011 release date.

Ivan Reitman Confirms GHOSTBUSTERS 3 On His Plate

It’s time to extend that practical joke the cast and crew of GHOST BUSTERS and GHOSTBUSTERS 2 are all playing on Dan Aykroyd.   Reitman spoke with MTV at the National Board of Review red carpet and confirmed that he would be stepping in as director of the third GHOSTBUSTERS film.

Talking about screenwriters Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, Reitman had this to say about the stage of the screenplay:

They have delivered a draft.   We are working our way through another draft… good work is being done and all of us have our fingers crossed.

The goal is for production to begin later this year for a release sometime in 2011.

What do you think about the project now?   Is Reitman the right choice to step back in and direct this film?   Would you rather have seen his son, Jason, step up to take the helm?   What kind of GHOSTBUSTERS story would you like to see for the third go around?   Let us know by shooting us a comment below!

GHOSTBUSTER 3 News?

At this point, I don’t even know if it is considered news.   It’s just the latest actor/actress/director/producer/director’s son talking up a potential sequel that, if it was ever going to hit, should have done so ages ago.   This time around, we have Harold Ramis talking to Heeb Magazine about much of his career as an actor/director.   I’m not even sure if questions about GHOSTBUSTERS 3 even need to be asked.   The interviewer just raises his or her eyebrows and raises three fingers as if ordering drinks.

Here’s what Ramis had to say about the potentiality of the film.   He seems to think it’s a done deal:

Something’s going to happen. Dan [Aykroyd] did write a spec GB3 screenplay a few years ago, but no one was motivated to pursue it. Now, 25 years after the original, there seems to be some willingness to proceed and apparently a substantial public appetite for a sequel. We’ll introduce some new young Ghostbusters, and all the old guys will be in it, too. Think Christopher Lloyd in Back to the FutureGB3 is progressing with plans to shoot next summer and release in 2011.

I still stand by my cynical belief that this is all a ruse against Aykroyd, that Murray, Ramis, Reitman (both of ’em), and Weaver are stifling laughs behind the big guy’s back while gently placing a proverbial “kick me” squarely between his shoulder blades.   I didn’t mention Ernie Hudson, there.   I think he’s off somewhere awaiting dividends from LEVIATHAN.

As for this GHOSTBUSTERS 3 tripe, pardon the obvious pun, but we’re sorry, Mr. Ramis, we are NOT ready to believe you.

Sigourney Weaver Drops Some GHOSTBUSTERS 3 Bombs

Another week, another rumor going around about what to expect from the possible GHOSTBUSTERS 3.   There were early talks that Chris Farley would be in the film.   That is how far back these rumors go.   I think, at this point, it’s just the staples of the first two films (Bill Murray, Ivan Reitman, Sigourney Weaver, Harold Ramis, even Ernie Hudson) all dragging this out seeing how far they can string us (and Dan Aykroyd, who genuinely thinks it’s going to happen soon) along.

Today’s unobtainable carrot bit of information comes from Weaver herself, who was doing interviews promoting AVATAR.   She sat down with Channel 4, and the subject of a third GHOSTBUSTERS film was broached.   What she had to say was pretty startling and gives some serious spoilers as to what the direction for the next film might be.

Here is the gist.   Note, if this does end up becoming true, these could be considered major spoilers for the new film.   You were warned.

  • She hopes people are excited for it.
  • She is not officially involved, but she has had some offers to read the script.
  • Her son from GHOSTBUSTERS 2 is likely going to be a Ghostbuster in the new film.
  • Bill Murray’s character, Peter Venkman, is going to be a ghost.

In all honesty, at this point, I could care less if there is another GHOSTBUSTERS film.   The first one is a classic.   The second one is funny in parts but, overall, a let-down from the first one.   We will always have THE REAL GHOSTBUSTERS episodes and the new video game to keep us company.   We really don’t need another film, and these plot points, if they are true, don’t do much to sway me the other direction.

What do you think?   Should another GHOSTBUSTERS film be put on the fast track?   How much do you think Weaver is really giving away in her comments here?   Are you, like me, under the impression that this is all a big, decades-long April Fool’s joke on Aykroyd?   Let us know by commenting below.

In case you wanted to see it, here is the video clip from Channel 4 where Weaver makes these comments:

Ivan Reitman Confirmed for GHOSTBUSTERS 3, But For What?

ivan reitman

Sometimes, a bit of news comes along of which you’re not quite sure what to make.  According to Bloody Disgusting, Ivan Reitman, director of GHOST BUSTERS and GHOSTBUSTERS 2, is confirmed for GHOSTBUSTERS 3.  It’s probably just better to run some quotes here rather than try to explain his role in the film.

have straight up confirmed, 100%, without a shadow of a doubt that Ivan Reitman, director of Ghost Busters and Ghostbusters II, is in fact attached to get behind the camera for GHOSTBUSTERS 3. While he’s attached, the word is that he hasn’t decided whether or not he really wants to direct, yet.

Does this mean Reitman may be stepping into the role of director of photography on the film with someone else serving as director?  If so, it would be Reitman’s first time acting as cinematographer since the 1969, X-rated THE COLUMBUS OF SEX.

Bloody Disgusting also conjured up a synopsis on the new GHOSTBUSTERS film.  Evidently, it will take place years after the Ghost Busters headquarters has been shut down.  The film would deal with a new threat that forces the paranormal investigators to reopen their doors.

As confirmed throughout the years of the film’s gestation, all principal players will be returning.

Aykroyd Claims ‘Ghostbusters 3’ Could Start Shooting This Winter

Dan Aykroyd is still blaring his ‘Ghostbusters 3’ trumpet.   His latest bit of news on the project is that filming could begin as early as this coming Winter.   Recently sitting down with the LA Times, Aykroyd explained that most of the original films cast would be returning.   This includes Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson, and, even Sigourney Weaver and Bill Murray, who had previous expressed a disinterest in the project.

Aykroyd said in the interview that, despite the film’s necessity to have Murray return, the reasons for the delay were more nuanced than that.

“I don’t put not making the third movie on Billy. We can’t do that. I’ve been very busy. Harold’s been  busy, Ivan’s been busy. And a third script really  didn’t coalesce properly. And Billy, you can’t blame an artist for not wanting to  do the same thing again. He did two of them, for God’s sake. Although I’m the biggest cheerleader  as the originator of the concept but I’ve never begrudged Billy not doing a third movie. I never said he held it up or that he refused. Hey, listen, he’s an artist. You can’t force somebody into it. I’m sorry he never read my third draft because I thought it was pretty good but, look, now we’re at a point that there’s a story that he can accept and that’s going to work, and I think we’re going to be in  production fairly soon. We  could be in production by winter.”

Aykroyd believes production on the film will continue to move forward, but he realizes everything could “blow up” at any second.

The third film would serve as a new generation of ‘Ghostbusters’ of sorts, with a younger crew taking the reins from the original crew.

“I’d like it to be a passing-of-the-torch movie. Let’s revisit the old characters briefly and happily and have them there as family but let’s pass it on to a new generation.”

The screenplay for the new film has been written by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky (‘Year One’), and Aykroyd hopes Ivan Reitman will return to fill the director’s chair.

Time will tell if this actually gets of the ground as Aykroyd is hoping.   There has been rumors for years of a third ‘Ghostbusters’ film, and this idea of the old crew passing the torch to a younger crew has always been the central theme of the film.   This could, actually, be moving forward, and it could just be more wishful thinking on Aykroyd’s part.   Either way, we’ll keep you posted as soon as any more word comes down.

Aykroyd Says ‘Ghostbusters 3’ Starts Shooting in the Fall

ghostbusters

In an online chat with the public over at Boston.com, Dan Aykroyd made a pretty shocking announcement regarding the third ‘Ghostbusters’ film.

[Comment From Tom]
Dan, I’m extremely excited for the HOB to be back in its birth-city!! I will be attending many shows. On a side note, and I’m sure you get these questions a lot, so I apologize in advance… Ghostbusters 3? I’ve heard that the writers of the Office are currently penning a script? How is this coming along, and should we look forward to this movie seeing the light of day? Thanks Dan!

Dan Aykroyd: Â  Script is commenced early summer. Â   Hope to be in production by late fall 2009.

This is the first word we’ve had in a long while about the ongoing production/pre-production of the latest ‘Ghostbusters’ film.   Last we heard, way back in September, Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg were working on the screenplay with Judd Apatow co-producing.

Who knows if this latest announcement is, indeed, an indication of progress on the project.   Aykroyd could just be rolling on pure hope these days.

What do you think?   Is it too late for another ‘Ghostbusters’ film?   Is Aykroyd out of his mind to think the movie is going to get made?   Is there any chance in hell that Bill Murray will be returning?   Let us know by commenting below!

‘Ghostbusters III’ becoming more & more like a possible reality!

This is exciting news, though I hope things turns out well.   The studio and all creative involved seem to be behind this possible endeavour and it will be fun to see where this goes.   With an Apatow cast and appearances by all the originals, it will be interesting to see how this plays out.   Here is hoping to it playing out well.   Check out what Harold Ramis has to say about the project:

“Yes, Columbia is developing a script for GB3 with my year one writing partners, Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg.   Judd Apatow is co-producing year one  and has made several other films for Sony, so of course the studio is hoping to tap into some of the same acting talent. Aykroyd, Ivan Reitman and  I are consulting at this point, and according to Dan, Bill Murray is willing to be involved on some level.   He did record his dialogue for the new ghostbusters video game, as did Danny and I, and Ernie Hudson.   The concept is that the old ghostbusters would appear in the film in some mentor capacity.   Not much else to say at this point.   Everyone is confident a decent script can be written and i guess we’ll take it from there.
best,
harold”

That is straight from the guy you want to hear something about this being legit.   So get ready for a possible sequel getting going later this year, and remember, ‘Who you going to call?’   Full article here.
