New Stills from ‘Book of Eli’

book-of-eli-header

Even when the movie is trivial and thin, the presence of Denzel Washington can elicit a certain amount of weight.   ‘Book of Eli’ seems like your typical, run-of-the-mill, post-apocalyptic actioner.   To read the synopsis calls to mind any number of straight-to-DVD movies that are more at home on the Sci-Fi Channel on a Saturday night than movie theaters.

Washington plays a lone warrior who must travel across the desolate wasteland of the world all the while protecting a book that could hold the key to all humanity.   Gary Oldman plays the malevolent ruler of a small town who attempts to get the book from Eli.

USA Today has put up some new pics for ‘Book of Eli’ along with some explanation on some of the film’s shooting.

Check ’em out:

The Earth faces another calamity in the post-apocalyptic thriller ‘The Book of Eli,’ starring Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman.   Albert Hughes, who co-directs with brother Allen, says ‘Eli’ marks the end of a search “for something we both could feel passionate about.”   At first, Albert says, the script “seemed a little too spiritual or something. … But then I slept on it, and the next morning I couldn’t get the story out of my head.   That’s when you know you should do the movie.”

USA Today’s Scott Bowles takes a look at the battered world of ‘Eli.’   In this frame, says Allen, Eli comes upon a fork in the road.   “Eli’s iPod has run out of juice and to the right is the road that leads into Carnegie’s (Oldman) town.   Eli makes the decision to go in to town, power up his iPod and refill his canteen.”

Washington plays Eli, a lone man who fights his way across a desolate America to protect a book that may hold the key to mankind’s survival.   “I initially wasn’t all that interested in the part,” Washington says.   “But my son thought I should do it.   And he talked me into doing ‘Training Day’ and ‘American Gangster,’ and that worked out pretty well.   So I decided to listent to him again.”

Washington shed nearly 60 pounds for the role.   “I came out of the editing room for ‘The Great Debaters’ about 30 pounds heavier than I went in,” he says.   “I figured I’d get back into the gym, but I tore my knee.   So I figured I’d play a fat guy in ‘The Taking of Pelham 123.’   But then I decided I had to lose that weight.   Not only for my health, but it just didn’t make sense to play a fat guy wandering the earth after it has nearly been wiped out.”

Says Allen: “This is the scene where Eli has come into the Orpheum Theatre, which has been converted into a post-apocalyptic bar.   He’s come into fill his canteen with water, but ends up being confronted by some locals, who block his path as he tries to exit.   This is the moment where the noble man (Eli) decides he has to kill some folks.”

book-of-eli-4

‘Eli’ follows on the heels of movies such as ‘Terminator Salvation,’ ‘Knowing,’ and ‘The Happening’ in depicting the end of the world.   “This is the first time in recent history that I can remember where it feels like America is, at its core, vulnerable,” says Allen Hughes.   “We’re mortal.   After 9/11, the reaction showed how thin that line is between order and chaos.   That’s why these themes of redemption and salvation are so powerful now.”

book-of-eli-5

Gary Oldman as Carnegie, a town leader interested in acquiring Eli’s book.   Says Allen: He is the President/Mayor/Spiritual Leader, etc., etc. and he runs the town.   His office is the main power hub.”

Oldman says it was an adjustment working for sibling director. “They fight like brothers do.   They’ll bicker over a scene.   It’s quite fun to watch.   And it’s over very quickly, they never disagree for long.   then it’s like working for one director, because one of them deals with the actors, the other the technical details.   But you can see how they probably fought as little kids.”

‘Book of Eli’ comes out on January15th, 2010.

‘Iron Man 2’ Gains a Couple of Garys

UPDATE

Yeah, sometimes we jump the gun on these things.   Evidently, Gary Oldman is not in ‘Iron Man 2,’ he wasn’t on the ‘Iron Man 2’ set, he’s nowhere near Los Angeles this week, he’s never even picked up an ‘Iron Man 2’ comic.   Okay, that last part, I can’t confirm, but the rest of this update is true.   A man claiming to be Oldman’s manager contacted a few others sites and explained that Oldman will not be in the film.

So, there you have it.   Gary Oldman will NOT be in ‘Iron Man 2.’   Shandling, on the other hand, is in the film.

It was revealed earlier in the week that Gary Shandling had joined the cast of ‘Iron Man 2,’ and his spotting on set confirmed that news.   Shandling is playing the role of Senator Stern in the first scene of the new film, which will serve as a continuation of the final scene of the first film.

Well, celeb spotters noticed another Gary on set yesterday.   Gary Oldman was seen on the ‘Iron Man 2’ set.   No word yet on who the once-Commissioner Gordon will be playing in the film, but IESB is hearing that it could be Howard Stark, Tony’s father.   That role was once rumored to be filled by Tim Robbins, but those ended up being just that.

We will keep you up to date on all the news we hear coming in from ‘Iron Man 2’ as shooting continues.

First Look: ‘Book of Eli’

book-of-eli

Above you’ll find the first look from ‘The Book of Eli’, the Denzel Washington-starring sci-fi flick from the Hughes Brothers.   Warner Brothers released the first look pic, and it will appear in the new issue of Entertainment Weekly.

The film sounds like it is going to be an awesome post-apocalyptic, action movie.   Washington stars as Eli, a lone man who fights his way across America in order to protect a sacred book that holds the secrets to saving humankind. Gary Oldman, Mila Kunis, Ray Stevenson and Jennifer Beals co-star.

In the pic above, we see Eli stopping off at a bar to juice his wheels a bit.

”They peddle some nasty, prison-type alcohol — whatever you can make in the future when there’s nothing left,” says co-director Allen Hughes.

‘The Book of Eli’ is set for a January 15th, 2010 release.

In case you missed it… ‘Backwoods’

thebackwoodsoldman

I’ve been a big fan of Gary Oldman for, Hell… a long time! So, when I found out about this little semi-foreign film that stars the talented Hollywood outsider, I had to rush out and see it. A few weeks later, and no closer to having seen the movie, I am told by a little birdie that Best Buy has the DVD on sale for $3.99 and I lept from the nearest tall building and soared through the air, landing clumsily on the doorstep of my neighborhood Best Buy store. What can I say, Movie Geeks are busy but resourceful people who can muster up the occasional superhuman ability when needed… like to get a really good deal on a DVD.

Now, off the tangent and back onto my original point. ‘Backwoods’ is a semi-foreign film by my standards because, even though it was made in Spain, only about half of the dialogue in is Spanish. Of course, I’m guesstimating. Did you really think I sat there and kept track? The story follows two English couples who head out into the remote woods of Spain to Paul’s (Gary Oldman) newly acquired old ramshackle cabin that used to belong to his grandmother. It quickly becomes clear that Paul is the only person who has any desire to be there as his wife Isabel (Aitana Sà ¡nchez-Gijà ³n) and their friendly couple Norman (Paddy Considine) and Lucy (Virginie Ledoyen) are anything but thrilled.

Before they can even get settled, Paul drags Norman out for a hunt. The two men trek for miles and only come across and kill one measly rabbit, but find something far more disturbing in the woods that instantly changes their little vacation into an effort to survive. What they find isn’t the disturbing part, but it’s the people who are trying to get back what Paul and Norman have found that create the tension in the movie and ultimately develop this tale of paranoia through a misunderstanding between two very different groups of people.

‘Backwoods’ was directed by Kolda Serra and is, for the most part, not a great movie. It does have it’s merits and it isn’t unwatchable, but the writing is a little flat and the story builds to an entirely unsatisfying end. The film’s one saving grace is it’s star Gary Oldman, who truly does (as always) deliver a fascinating performance and is a joy to watch as he fully embraces his craft. Paddy Considine is mostly annoying as a pessimistic and paranoid version of Ross from ‘Friends’ while the group of actors playing the Spanish backwoods family to a reasonably good job of being creepy but realistic.

Long story short, it’s not worth buying and you’re better off trying to catch it on cable than paying $3-5 for the rental. Now I totally get why Best Buy had the DVD on sale. ‘Backwoods’ is not very original, but if you’re a fan of Gary Oldman the price seems acceptable.

First Look at Jim Carrey in ‘A Christmas Carol’

That there is the first look at Jim Carrey in Robert Zemeckis’ version of ‘A Christmas Carol’. Â  He’s doing it motion-capture style like ‘Beowulf’ and ‘The Polar Express’. Â  The guy can’t seem to shake that type of filmmaking.

Carrey will be playing Scrooge,  the Ghost of Christmas Past, the Ghost of Christmas Present and the Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come.   Gary Oldman will be playing  iny Tim, Bob Cratchit, and Marley.   Colin Firth also has a part.

The above picture was brought to us by the guys over at The Bad and Ugly. Â  They’ve also posted a small image of the film’s promo poster. Â  Here it is all blowed up:

What do you think? Â  Do we really need another retelling of A Christmas Carol? Â  Didn’t the Muppets do it just fine the last time? Â  Will Robert Zemeckis ever shoot another live-action film again? Â  Let us know by commenting below!

‘Book of Eli’, ‘Step Up 3D’, and ‘Astroboy’ All Get Posters

A trio of posters were unveiled at the American Film Market late last week. Â  Coming Soon got their hands on them, and there they are. Â  The above poster is for ‘Book of Eli’, a film that sounds like all kinds of badass. Â  Denzel Washington plays a lone warrior in a post-apocalyptic world who must defend a book that holds the key to saving all of mankind. Â  The Hughes Brothers are directing it, and, as reported by us last week, Gary Oldman costars. Â  ‘Book of Eli’ comes out on January 15, 2010, but I think that will likely get bumped up to a late 2009 release.

Also unveiled at AFM was the poster for the highly, highly, extremely highly anticipated ‘Step Up 3D’.

Not exciting enough for you? Â  How’s about the poster for ‘Astroboy’?

Yeah, it’s a teaser poster, and another one is surely on the way.   ‘Astroboy’ is based on the 1960s Japanese series and features the voices of  Nicolas Cage, Kristen Bell, Donald Sutherland, Nathan Lane, Bill Nighy, Eugene Levy, Matt Lucas and Freddie Highmore.   It comes out on October 23, 2009.
