THE INSPECTION – Review

A homeless young Black man, rejected by his mother and with few options, decides to join the Marines, but the catch is the young man is gay and an earlier time when gays were banned from serving in the military, the era of “don’t ask, don’t tell.” Gabrielle Union plays the mother of this young man, whom she kicked out ten years earlier, in this moving drama inspired by writer/director Elegance Bratton’s own experiences. The drama has garnered strong praise for its powerful drama, in an impressive directorial debut for writer/director Elegance Bratton.

Ellis French (Jeremy Pope) has been living on the streets since his mother kicked him out at the age of 15. Now 25, he sees little ahead for him and decides to do something desperate, specifically entering the military. Not just the military but the Marines, rather than a less-tough branch like the army or navy. However, before he can be inducted, Ellis must get his birth certificate from his mother, who does not want any contact with him. Showing up at her door, his mother (Gabriel Union), a ramrod-straight, strict corrections officer, is both shocked and cold towards him, treating her son as if he is a threat to her safety and barring the door to him. She responds to his decision to join the Marines with a mix of skepticism and mild amusement. Eventually, reluctantly, she warily lets him in.

Her behavior raises questions in our minds about their past history but the film offers little on that past. Her apartment is filled with objects that tell us she is deeply religious, so we guess that her religious feelings are at least part of why she rejected her gay son, but her reaction is so extreme, we wonder if there is something more.

Joining the Marines hardly seems like the best idea for a gay Black man in this more homophobic era, so his estranged mother’s skepticism about that decision might be something we share as well. Yet Ellis is making a very deliberate choice in picking the Marines. He is offering himself up to be remade, with a hope for a rebirth into a different life. That mix of desperation and determination drives him but it seems a long reach.

Marine boot camp is tough for any recruit but more so for someone concealing a secret like Ellis French. Induction calls for recruit French to declare he is not a communist or planning to overthrow the government, along with a litany of other things, including being homosexual. He does that without blinking. Once at boot camp, French finds himself among mostly white recruits, who already think of themselves as Marines. Yet he finds he is not the only one facing special challenges, including a Muslim recruit named Ismail (Eman Esfandi).

The drill instructors are led by tough Sergeant Laws (Bokeem Woodbine), a Black sergeant who, unlike the rest of the instructors, has actual combat experience. It is something he wears like a medal on his chest, something which both he and the other instructors clearly feel sets him on a different plane, but it also has a toxic effect. “I hate recruits,” Laws says early on, “But I love Marines.” Since both Laws and recruit Ellis French are Black, one expects a connection between them, but it is a Hispanic drill instructor, Rosales (Raul Castillo), who quietly offers some encouragement and something more, albeit more in private.

Jeremy Pope gives a moving performance as Ellis French, who reveals a level of commitment to his goal and courage in the face of the abuse he receives once they figure out he is gay, as you know they will. In an unusual role for her, Gabriel Union gives us a harsh, rigid and religious woman as Ellis’ mother, although we catch glimpses of a motherly impulse to hope for success for her son, even as she keeps him at arm’s length.

Other outstanding performances sharpen the raw emotion of this powerful drama, notably Raul Castillo as the more kind drill instructor. Bokeem Woodbine is alternately terrifying and riveting Laws, the hardened lead drill instructor.

It is a grueling experience, as one expects, but THE INSPECTION is unblinking and unrestrained in its depiction of the boot camp’s bullying, abuse and hardship. That brutal honesty goes a ways to elevating this film above the usual boot camp tale, but the film is also a salute to what the Marines gave Bratton, a personal rebirth on several levels. We have to assume French’s unseen ten years spent on the streets have given him an inner strength and resourcefulness we don’t expect at first. Along with the bullying and violence, we also see moments of friendship, humor, and even tenderness. It is not just a sense of camaraderie that grows between the recruits but a pride in accomplishment, and a deeper kind of personal transformation for the lead character.

The camera often focuses closely on faces, and a surprising number of scenes are shot in dim light or half lit, giving the film a far different tone than most boot camp dramas, one that is more contemplative. The pace is contemplative too, at least early on, requiring us to let things develop. We are given little about Ellis’ previous life, or details of what happen between him and his mother, leaving the audience wondering about what has to have been pivotal years. Instead, the focus is firmly on the boot camp experience, and its powerful ending, which eschews pat conclusions.

It is not a perfect film but this semi-autobiographical drama is surprising, effective and deeply, movingly human, and an impressive debut for writer/director Elegance Bratton, full of promise.

THE INSPECTION opens Friday, Dec. 2, in theaters.

STRANGE WORLD – Review

UNFORGETTABLE ADVENTURE STORY – Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Strange World” introduces a legendary family of explorers, the Clades, as they attempt to navigate an uncharted, treacherous land. The original action-packed comedy adventure features the voices of Dennis Quaid as legendary larger-than-life explorer Jaeger Clade; Jake Gyllenhaal as Searcher Clade, a family man who finds himself out of his element on an unpredictable mission; Gabrielle Union as Meridian Clade, an accomplished pilot and Searcher’s partner in all things. Jaboukie Young-White as Searcher’s 16-year-old son, Ethan, who finally finds the adventure he’s always wanted; and Lucy Liu as Callisto Mal, fearless leader of the mythical Avalonia who spearheads an exploration into a strange world. “Strange World” opens in theaters nationwide on Nov. 23, 2022. © 2022 Disney. All Rights Reserved.

In order to continue the big holiday festivities, the “mouse house” is releasing another full-length animated feature to enjoy with the whole family once the leftover goodies are sealed off and sent to the fridge. But you can enjoy this if you’re celebrating solo, too. Now a few days ago, I praised a remake. or re-imagining, of one of their iconic animated classics, and I was lukewarm on their own sequel to a popular hybrid (live and ‘toon) from 15 years ago. So, naturally, they’re sending out an original cartoon flick, not a sequel, prequel, or spin-off. And it’s not set on an Earth-bound fantasy kingdom, but on another world. Ah, but then so was last summer’s LIGHTYEAR from sister studio Pixar. Nope, this is from the artists that really delivered the previous year with ENCANTO (just an opening title song here), Walt Disney Animation Studios, who hope that you’ll join them in a journey to a truly STRANGE WORLD (cue the theremin).

Yes, the title tune brings us up to speed in the film’s first few minutes, giving us the “4-11” on the world of Avalonia, a technically primitive society (horse carts, windmills, and such) that yearns to see what’s beyond the massive mountains that surround them. Why, that’s a job for their most intrepid and adventurous explorer, Jaeger Clade (voice of Dennis Quaid), and his teenage son Searcher (Jake Gyllenhaal). All’s going well until a most dangerous passage reveals a weird, glowing plant called Pando, It emits crackling electric-life energy, and Searcher wants to harness it for the Avalonians. This prompts a stand-off as Jaeger insists on forging ahead despite almost certain doom. And thus begins a parting of father and son, as Jaeger continues, while Searcher and the rest of the crew return home with the Pando. Several years passed and the plant has indeed changed the planet, powering new contraptions and transports, and also providing a plentiful food source, So plentiful that Searcher oversees his own massive Pando farm along with his wife Meridian (Gabrielle Union) and their teeage son, who has gotten his grandpop’s explorer genes, Ethan (Jaboukie Young White). Jaeger never returned, so a statue of him along with his son tower above the nearby village. All seem’s well, until the Clades notice that part of the crop has no, well, spark. It’s a bust. This precedes an unexpected visit from former crew member, and current president of Avalonia, Callisto Mal (Lucy Liu). She’s discovered that all the Pando crops are connected via their roots to a massive “heart’ deep underground. And that central “organ” is failing. She implores Searcher to join her and her aides aboard a massive airship, the Venture, on a journey into the dark depths to save their precious food/energy source. Searcher bids his family farewell and boards the Venture. As it begins its mission, Searcher is stunned to see that Meridian is tailing them in a small one-person crop duster. It turns out that it’s a family reunion because she tells him that Ethan and the family pooch are stowaways on the ship. Before Meridian can return with them the Venture comes under attack and gets two new crew members. When they finally escape the threat, the ship lands in a bizarre world filled with weird unknown creatures. What new dangers await them and their cohorts in this odd hostile new environment? Can they save their precious Pando?

Now here’s a rollicking adventure tale with satiric touches, imaginative creatures and backdrops, cool gizmos, and a family saga at its core (which is the setting for most of the really wild antics). Plus it features a terrific vocal ensemble. Quaid provides the macho blustering as Clade senior, Jaeger, and Gyllenhaal scores a good many laughs as the dad who just wants his kid (and his pals) to think he’s the cool papa. Union’s a no-nonsense mom that keeps her family grounded(and alive). And Young white bursts with youthful yearning. Oh, I hinted at the look of the film, which is eye-popping. The Pando-fueled transports have a retro beauty, a mating of steampunk and Flash Gordon with intricate little flourishes and fins. Now the underground world is a rainbow pastel explosion with curving slopes and jagged edges. And the wildlife, wow. Check out those magenta-glowing dragons. Or the horses with exlpoding worms for a head. All seem to be a candy-colored mix of Dali and Dr. Seuss. As a bonus, we’re treated to a cool comic book-inspired prologue with the classic 2D animation accented with old-school printers’ dots enhanced by a rousing choral march right out of a grainy TV ‘toon. So, it’s a true visual delight, but something just feels off. The characters look like true caricatures (Jaegar owes much to the bulk of Bluto, Popeye’s arch nemesis), but the movie gets bogged down with the bickering between the different Clade generations. And the ecological message is often pretty heavy-handed, even as we marvel at the weird sidekick Splat who resembles a shiny strobing rubber beanbag filled with gelatin. What may be at fault is the nearly two-hour running time (so many this film year) making several of the non-stop perils fairly repetitive. There are countless wonders to dazzle the senses in this STRANGE WORLD, it’s just a shame it doesn’t engage our hearts and heads.

BREAKING IN (2108) – Review

A big holiday’s approaching, and you’ve not gotten a thing for Mom? Instead of waiting in line for Brunch or picking through the last few roses at the flower shop, how about a movie? The studios are way ahead of you. Opening this weekend are two distinctly different motherhood movies on the screens not filled with that superhero smack-down. Competing for your cash are the collegiate comedy LIFE OF THE PARTY with Melissa McCarthy getting her degree alongside her daughter, and this action thriller with Gabrielle Union going to extreme lengths to protect her kids from a quartet of creeps. Ms. Union’s character is a new addition to the long list of tough movie moms from Greer Garson’s Oscar-winning turn as MRS. MINIVER to Sally Field’s seeker of revenge in EYE FOR AN EYE, and finally the very similar defender played by Jodie Foster in PANIC ROOM . Let’s see how Union stacks up to those “mama grizzlies” as she tries to save her cubs from thugs intent on BREAKING IN.

The film’s pre-title opening involves a fatal accident that befalls a middle-aged jogger, Isaac (Damkian Leake), on an affluent Chicago street corner (we soon learn that there’s nothing accidental about his death). Fade in on his daughter Shaun (Union) as she drives her kids, pre-teen son Glover (Seth Carr) and teenage daughter Jasmine (Ajiona Alexus) to her father’s country estate deep in the woods of Michigan. Shaun’s hubby Justin is swamped with work and hopes to join them soon, as she gets the place ready to sell (Shaun’s estranged from her papa, so the place has no sentimental value to her). The kids are impressed by the sophisticated security system of the place (lots of monitors, timed steel shutters on the windows, and a state-of-the-art defence control station). A little odd, but nothing too weird thinks Shaun. But then she’s attacked by a stranger while walking out of the garage. She momentarily escapes his clutches and races back to the house. As she bounds up the steps, Shaun sees two men hovering over her terrified kids just as the metal shutter goes down over the window while the doors lock shut. Via the front gate’s intercom Shaun speaks with the leader of the gang, the cold, calculated Eddie (Billy Burke). He and his men, the soft-spoken sensitive Sam (Levi Meaden), knife-wielding sadist Duncan (Richard Cabral), and paranoid “techie” Peter (Mark Furze), are there to rob Isaac’s safe of over four million in cash. Thing is, they don’t know where that safe is hidden. Plus the clock’s ticking because reps for the home’s ADT-type service will be there within 90 minutes. Eddie tells Shaun that they’ll execute her kids unless she co-operates with them. But will the family really be spared if the gang gets the loot? Thus begins a most desperate game of cat and mouse as Shaun tries to outwit and fight back against overwhelming odds. But Eddie and his boys quickly find out that they’ve have made a huge mistake by underestimating her.

Union energetically leads the cast as they revisit several classic “action thriller” types. She’s not given much of a back story other than having a ‘strained’ relationship with her pop. There’s the briefest sequences in which Union gets to put her spin on a modern mom, as she alternates between nurturing and ordering (“bring in the luggage…right now!”). Once the attack begins, she’s in full manic mom mode, plotting strategies and dispatching hoods as though she were a former Navy SEAL. But Union does let us see a bit of her fear just under her “don’t mess with me” veneer. Alexus portrays a typical detached teen who’s engaging in the usual mother-daughter push and pull (think LADY BIRD with vent-crawling). Carr is a precocious “tech savant’ figuring out his Grandpa’s home security while his toy drone zips up and down the stairs (hmmm…wonder if that’ll be put into use against the bad guys). Speaking of, Burke, best known as Bella’s father in the TWILIGHT franchise, is in full “Hans Gruber” mastermind mode, softly threatening as he tries to keep his underlings in line. Luckily he’s more energetic and ruthless in the film’s last act. Meaden is the more mellow menace, a timid soul who “didn’t sign up” for Eddie’s brutal schemes. The scene stealing “boogy man” may be Cabral who gleefully fondles his holster knife, with a constant sneer curling his lips just inches above his torso full of tattoos. He puts the fear in the hostage family and his partners.

Action film vet James McTeigue (V FOR VENDETTA, NINJA ASSASSIN) directors the night-time mayhem with confidence, making good use of some standard horror film flourishes (audio crashes. killer popping in from out of frame). Unfortunately the decision to go for the more timid “PG-13” rating stiffles some of the tension and dilutes the suspense. The double crosses and near-misses become tiresome even for the film’s less than 90 minute running time. It may be a nice twist that Union’s going solo, but the “average folks versus evil invaders” is a familiar genre. It doesn’t help that the script never fleshes out anyone, good or bad, making them “types’ and ‘tropes’ rather than interesting characters. It delivers the scares promised in the ads, but this glorified basic cable TV film is quickly forgettable. BREAKING IN breaks no new ground.

ALMOST CHRISTMAS – Review

almostxmas

So, we’ve been seeing the slow trickle of “Oscar bait” serious films the last few weeks, as the big escapist blockbusters go into hibernation (yes, a few more will pop up with prequels to Star Wars and Harry Potter, and another Marvel superhero glided in last week). Well, what also arrives in the multiplex is the holiday family “dramadies” (laughs and lots of heart-tuggin’). And this is an early bird, not even waiting for December to gather a big cast under the sparkly tree. But hey, it only a couple of days earlier than last year’s lump of coal in your movie stocking, LOVE THE COOPERS. So think of that flick mixed with more than a touch of 2013’s THE BEST MAN HOLIDAY, and you’ll realize, even though you’ve not started cooking the turkey, it’s ALMOST CHRISTMAS.

During the opening titles we get a montage of many moments from “Christmas past”, going back to 1971, all in the life of Walter Meyers (Danny Glover), the owner of a chain of auto repair shops based in Birmingham, Alabama. His four children grow before our eyes as he enjoys the sweet potato pie lovingly made by his adored wife Grace. Sadly, just after last year’s festivities, the family matriarch passed away, leaving a lonely Walter pondering whether to sell the old house. But not before having one last five-day Christmas celebration, gathering all the kids now spread out across the country. Eldest daughter Cheryl (Kimberly Elise), a successful Chicago dentist flies in with hubby Lonnie (J.B. Smoove), a fast-talking former NBA star. Locally based son Christian (Romany Malco) drives in with his wife Sonya (Nicole Ari Parker), two kids, and campaign manager Brooks (John Michael Higgins). Seems Christian is running for office and can’t relax, despite Sonya’s pleading. Struggling single mother, Rachel (Gabrielle Union) takes some time off from law school to hop on a bus with her pre-teen daughter Niya (Nadej k Bailey). And then there’s Walter and Grace’s late in life son (a “happy accident”) Evan (Jessie Usher), a college basketball star hoping to make the big leagues if he can get past the effects of an on-court injury. But the first to arrive is Walter’s sister-in-law, the boisterous May (Mo’Nique), formerly a touring back-up singer (name a star and she’s worked with them), who is determined to help him with everything. Let’s see, Christian’s a workaholic, relations are strained (to say the least) between sisters Cheryl and Rachel, Lonnie’s got a “roving eye”, and Evan’s harboring a dark secret. With Walter (who’s determined to recreate the pie recipe from his late wife) and May’s efforts, will they be able to last under the same roof though Christmas morning?

Pretty big cast, eh? So, let’s begin will the film’s true “scene stealers”. We’ve not seen much of Mo’Nique on the big screen since her Oscar win, so her work as Aunt May (not that one!) is as close to 3D as a 2D flick can get. Her flamboyant energy bounces off every wall of the theatre. Whether she’s whipping up a strange, exotic buffet (does she think everyone will dig right in?) or spewing insults with the force of a gattling gun. Mo’Nique dominates the story (making us wish the film makers would cut back to her during some dull stretches). She’s complimented by and often squaring off with, the terrific Smoove (so wonderful on HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm”) as the motor-mouthed con man Lonnie. He even gets to display his gangly grace in several slapstick scenes invoking another holiday icon Clark Griswald (especially as he tries to repair a faulty Santa decoration). But he’s at his best when Lonnie’s in full panic desperation mode in the film’s last act. Some smart producer should really pair up this two in a marriage comedy. The other stars don’t get as much of a chance to really shine. The gorgeous Union has played a variation of this hard-edged, hurt by romance character in countless “rom-coms” and TV films. She and Elise make good sparring partners, but Ms. E  doesn’t have her big moment until a big last act reveal. Malco (hilarious in THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN) is pretty much a straight man, particularly with Christopher Guest staple Higgins who’s an awkward laugh riot. Glover is world weary and exasperated (yes, he does his signature line). Usher injects some youthful energy, especially in the scenes with his full-of-swagger best bud Eric (DC Young Fly). Parker has little to do while Omar Epps is saddled with the cliché role of the now single neighbor, a high school crush of Union.

Writer/director David E. Talbert tries to keep the story moving despite feeling the need to slow things down for sequences that have become family flick staples (dancing to old pop tunes in the kitchen, the touch football game, etc.). The attempts at pathos and drama almost produce a whiplash effect when they abruptly follow or interrupt the comedy. It’s not enough that Walter’s a recent widower, he must have a connection to a local shelter which Christian’s political ambitions threaten. Too much time is lost to the pie subplot (I kept wondering if the recipe was hidden with the secret egg salad formula from the Woody Allen classic WHAT’S UP, TIGER LILY?), and a sharp turn into a substance abuse story nearly flips the film off its bearings. Plus some things just ring false particularly when lil’ Nya suddenly channels Dr. Phil and lays out all of mom Rachels’ emotional baggage. But the holiday sights and sounds are lovely enough to satisfy all the Christmas flick fans. And when Mo’Nique and J.B. Smoove are working their comedy magic, ALMOST CHRISTMAS goes down like a sweet cup of egg nog.
