A HOUSE OF DYNAMITE – Review

To many of us, nuclear weapons seem like something relegated to the Cold War past, but in Kathryn Bigelow’s chilling psychological thriller A HOUSE OF DYNAMITE, we are reminded that threat is still very much with us.

An ICBM of unknown origin is detected by military sensors, and is headed towards the continental United States. The assumption is that it has a nuclear warhead but there are many unanswered questions. Who launched it? Was it launched by mistake? Is it the start of a barrage or a single missile? Most importantly, what do we do?

Military sensors detected the single missile after its launch, so determining it’s origin is difficult. The missile is coming from somewhere in Asia, but the exact source is hard to pinpoint, as the missile was not detected until it was far up in the atmosphere. The source could be North Korea or China, even Russia but all is unclear. Questions must be answered: Who launched it? Was it accidental? Will there be more? And can this lone missile be stopped?

The military has plenty of plans for responding to attacks but not knowing who launched it and whether it was deliberate plays a enormous role in how to respond. A HOUSE DYNAMITE follows the response of the U.S. on differing levels to this mysterious threat headed our way. There are only a few minutes until the ICBM reaches the U.S., and those minutes tick down quickly.

Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow is a past master at taut action and suspense, a skill showcased in her films ZERO DARK THIRTY and THE HURT LOCKER. Besides the ticking clock, she loops the action back so that we see events and decision-making from three points of view, ascending the chain of command, and frames this shocking situation with the human element and their personal emotional reactions as well as their professional ones. The film sports an outstanding cast, including Idris Elba, Jared Harris, Tracy Letts, Rebecca Ferguson and Gabriel Basso, all who deliver the goods in this nail-biting psychological – political thriller.

The events that unfold are terrifying, and even more so because of all the uncertainty and unanswered questions. Looping the events back, to see from different viewpoints, makes things even more tense.

Bigelow tells this story in three over-lapping viewpoints, starting with the rank-and-file who first detect it, the boots-on-the-ground charged with carrying orders to destroy it, as well as the lower-level White House staff, White House reporters covering it, and technical experts charged with providing information to the decision-makers. The next two versions move us up the chain of decision-making, overlapping what we saw happening but now from a new viewpoint, advancing events a few steps as well, and with the last one including the President. Presenting the same unfolding events from different viewpoints builds both suspense and fear, as we see some of the same confusion, or sometimes more, as we move up the level of responsibility, reaching into the highest levels.

The scenario is not far-fetched as one might think, but it takes by surprise the characters in this dramatic thriller as much as it does us in the audience. The mystery of who would launch this nuclear missile now headed towards the U.S. is a major puzzle, one that limits what can be done to counteract or respond. The launch could be accidental or deliberate, part of a larger coming attack or just a single missile on its own. The questions sow confusion that magnifies the paralyzing disbelief, disbelief that consumes everyone involved, top to bottom.

The film’s title refers what one character says about the world, that it is a house built of dynamite – explosive material – just awaiting a blow to set it off. It is a good metaphor for the pile of nuclear weapons – “dynamite” – built during the Cold War, but built during that time but never disarmed or disposed of after the Soviet Union fell apart, and now largely forgotten about. A danger forgotten but still very deadly.

That forgetting comes back to bite the United States in this fictional tale but the danger it reminds us about is very real. Disbelief is a big factor complicating this situation, as well as confusion about what to do. Too many unanswered questions, about who and why, cloud the search for solutions, and the lack of knowledge and direct experience is even more chilling.

The film is terrifying as well as engrossing. Bigelow crafts the story written by Noah Oppenheim with a sure hand and builds both tension and human emotion as it unfolds in it triple form, a process aided by its terrific cast. The cast humanize this story, as things twist and go down the dark alleys, and they struggle to cope with an emergency they never expected to face, as if the past has come back to haunt them, which it kind of has.

In the first iteration, Rebecca Ferguson plays Captain Olivia Walker, who is in charge of the technical military team who discovered the threat and are tracking the progress of the mysterious missile. Gabriel Basso has a major role that runs through the film as a Deputy National Security Advisor, pressed into service as an expert on nuclear policy and political dynamics when his boss is unavailable. Much of the time we see Basso on video screen in the first version, as he hurries through the street to reach the White House.

The further in we go, the more we learn of the individuals facing this crisis, and their personal fears. Jared Harris, as Secretary of Defense Reid Baker, and Tracy Letts, as General Anthony Brady, are stand-outs. Harris’ and Letts’ characters play smaller parts in the first telling of events but more significant ones in the second and third iterations.

The overlapping, looping-back technique, gives us different takes on events, adds information others did not know, and gives both insights and a particularly human perspective. Information is revealed as we move up the chain of command, as well as upping the fear. The three-version approach is far more chilling than one might expect, for what is known and for what is unknown, about the unfolding situation and the human aspects.

Writer Noah Oppenheim’s script delves deep into the unexpected situation, as well as the lack of experience or knowledge that nearly everyone has about nuclear war. Different personalities react with varying levels of emotion or coolness, with the military characters the coolest heads but also the ones with the strictly military point of view.

The film is also an eye-opener for the audience, and it opens with a reminder of the too-common mistaken idea that many people have of nuclear weapons have somehow vanished, deactivated after the Cold War, a process that actually started but was never finished.

This is a powerful film, gripping as a fictional thriller, but so close to the possible that the terror rises to a fever level. The sterling A HOUSE OF DYNAMITE may be Kathryn Bigelow’s most significant film, as well as her most terrifying. Hopefully, it will also spark some thought, and alarm, in all of us about the unseen cliff on which we are unconsciously teetering.

A HOUSE OF DYNAMITE opens in theaters on Friday, Oct. 10, 2025.

Top Ten Tuesday – Comic-Con 2015

Comic-Con-2

Another San Diego Comic-Con International has come and gone. This year was a great year for films, friends, and fun! Check out my Top 10 cinematic moments from this years con. Also, be sure to share your favorite moments from this year. I’d love to hear from you! Now, let’s get started!

10. BATMAN v SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE

batmanvsuperman-comic-con-art-560x378

Let me start off by saying that I have not been looking forward to this film. I’m not stoked on the new batsuit, and disagree with their casting of Lex Luthor, simply because I feel as though the character should be older. Having said that, this is the best trailer that I have seem thus far, and I really hope that they prove me wrong. Check out the all new trailer that debuted in Hall H and let me know what you think!

Fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.

9. FANTASTIC FOUR

The FANTASTIC FOUR trailer was also released in Hall H, during the Fox panel on Saturday evening. In it, we see Dr. Doom’s powers and a young Reed Richards building a teleportation device in the garage. I’m a big fan of origin stories, so I’m curious to see the transformations of the characters. Plus, Miles Teller is an incredible performer. I’m excited to see what he can bring to a superhero.

Director Josh Trank’s FANTASTIC FOUR, a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel’s original and longest-running superhero team, centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways.

Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy.

8. WARCRAFT

IMG950665-560x420

From Legendary Pictures and Universal Pictures comes WARCRAFT, an epic adventure of world-colliding conflict based on Blizzard Entertainment’s global phenomenon. This movie has been in production for years, but this is the first time that they showed an eager Hall H crowd any clips of the film. Unfortunately, I cannot show you those because they have yet to be released. It was really neat too, because they opened up all of the curtains, so we were surrounded by video screens. You wouldn’t get the same effect from a YouTube clip. I can, however, show you these badass character posters that they showed us. Hopefully, they will release a trailer soon!

The peaceful realm of Azeroth stands on the brink of war as its civilization faces a fearsome race of invaders: Orc warriors fleeing their dying home to colonize another. As a portal opens to connect the two worlds, one army faces destruction and the other faces extinction. From opposing sides, two heroes are set on a collision course that will decide the fate of their family, their people and their home.

So begins a spectacular saga of power and sacrifice in which war has many faces, and everyone fights for something.

7. THE HIVE

Screen Shot 2015-07-13 at 1.02.58 PM

Nerdiest Presents : THE HIVE had a pretty good run at Comic-Con this year. I sat down with Director David Yarovesky and stars Gabriel Basso, Gabrielle Walsh, Jacob Zachar and Steve Agee to talk about their film, and pick on each other a bit. Check it out here.

They also released the first trailer for the film. You should watch it. You might recognize someone’s name… [Cough… Cough… Me… Cough]

When Camp Yellow Jacket has fallen into chaos, teen counselor Adam wakes up in a boarded up cabin with no memory of who or where he is. His only clue as to what’s happening is the notes he’s scrawled for himself on the walls and the disturbing physical transformation he must overcome. The only memories he has aren’t his own, yet those memories may be the key to Adam’s survival.

6. SUICIDE SQUAD

suicide-squad-costume-560x399

See what it means to be a villain and what it means to be a hero in this first trailer, directly from Comic-Con 2015, for director David Ayer’s SUICIDE SQUAD. Not only did the cast take a break from filming in Toronto, but they blew Hall H away with this surprise teaser. People could not stop talking about Jared Leto as The Joker. In fact, the SUICIDE SQUAD trailer got way more buzz than BATMAN v SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE.

The action adventure brings DC Comics’ super villain team to the big screen and stars two-time Oscar nominee Will Smith as Deadshot; Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn; Oscar winner Jared Leto as the Joker; Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg; Jai Courtney as Boomerang; and Cara Delevingne as Enchantress.

5. THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY – PART 2

Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson and Jennifer Lawrence seen at Lionsgate “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2" Presentation at 2015 Comic Con on Thursday, July 9, 2015, in San Diego. (Photo by Eric Charbonneau/Invision for Lionsgate/AP Images)

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2’s Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Willow Shields, Director Francis Lawrence, and Producer Nina Jacobson held a Press Conference after their Hall H panel at the Hilton Bayfront, and WAMG was there. Check out the press conference in its entirety below as Jennifer talks reality TV, Malibu, and playing such a strong character. Video is below… because, come on… there’s no other way to capture the essence of J-Law’s awesomeness!

With the nation of Panem in a full-scale war, Katniss confronts President Snow [Donald Sutherland] in the final showdown. Teamed with a group of her closest friends – including Gale [Liam Hemsworth], Finnick [Sam Claflin] and Peeta [Josh Hutcherson] – Katniss goes off on a mission with the unit from District 13 as they risk their lives to liberate the citizens of Panem, and stage an assassination attempt on President Snow who has become increasingly obsessed with destroying her. The mortal traps, enemies, and moral choices that await Katniss will challenge her more than any arena she faced in The Hunger Games.

4. VICTOR FRANKENSTEIN

The award for funniest panel, by far, goes to VICTOR FRANKENSTEIN. James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe kept attendees in stitches, as the panel basically turned into one big dick joke. Chris Hardwick only added to the fun as moderator. Check it out below…

Written by Max Landis, when Dr. Victor Frankenstein (James McAvoy) and his trusted assistant Igor (Daniel Radcliffe) go too far in their noble attempts to aid humanity, Victor’s obsession turns to madness. He then unleashes his final creation –a monstrous figure that holds unimaginable terror for anyone its path.

3. THE HATEFUL EIGHT

Screen Shot 2015-07-14 at 2.29.03 PM

Quentin Tarantino is back with his eighth film, THE HATEFUL EIGHT, and tore Hall H up! I was really excited for this, since I have yet to do a Tarantino film junket, and am a huge fan. Despite the rough start (such as a leaked script), Tarantino’s newest adventure is sure to be anything but ordinary! Filmed in Telluride, Colorado, this spaghetti western takes place roughly around a decade after the Civil War. Eight strangers find themselves stranded in a blizzard. They may survive the blizzard, but can they survive each other? Check out the video below!

THE HATEFUL EIGHT features an amazing cast such as Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Samuel L. Jackson, and Michael Madsen. Since it’s a Tarantino film, be ready for some next level gun slinging!  I don’t normally camp out for Hall H, but I got in there for this one. It was worth it!

2. STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

Fans at San Diego Comic-Con’s Hall H were treated to a special look behind the scenes of Star Wars:The Force Awakens by director J.J. Abrams, producer and Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy and writer Lawrence Kasdan.

The filmmakers were joined on stage by cast members Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, Gwendoline Christie, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford to the surprise and delight of fans.

At the end of the Hall H presentation, the entire Hall H audience of more than 6,000 fans were all invited to continue the celebration and join cast and filmmakers at a surprise Star Wars Fan Concert. The San Diego Symphony performed the classic Star Wars music from John Williams at the Embarcadero Marina Park South.

DEADPOOL was the icing on the Hall H cake. Audiences stood up and cheered “One more time!” after the trailer as Ryan Reynolds, and the rest of the cast were about to leave the stage. Unfortunately, the trailer has not been released, so check out these new images from the film. WAMG Talks To THE HIVE – SDCC (Video)

Screen Shot 2015-07-13 at 1.02.58 PM

Hey there kids! Melissa here, back with some more comic-con goodness for you. This one was especially fun for me. Friday afternoon, I headed over to the Nerdist Conival to interview Director David Yarovesky and stars Gabriel Basso, Gabrielle Walsh, Jacob Zachar and Steve Agee about their film THE HIVE. Not only is it a fantastic film, it’s also great to see one of my good friends, David, succeed. Check out my interview with these crazy cats below! (You totally can’t tell we know each other…) Oh, and be sure to check out the all new trailer. You might recognize someone [insert wink here].

The film turns genre convention on its head to tell a story that taps into the anxiety and emotions we’ve discovered in a post-online world. In the same way George Romero sought to comment on consumerism in the 1970’s, Dave Yarovesky has found a parable for the digital age.

Upon the release of the trailer, music visionary and executive producer Steve Aoki said, “I love music because it connects people all over the world, making them feel the same shared feelings of joy or sadness or excitement. But music isn’t the only thing that connects us; a film can make us laugh at the same time, cry at the same time or… scream at the same time. “ Aoki continued, “I’m excited to make people scream with our new movie Nerdist Presents: The Hive. I’m an executive producer on the film and you can hear tracks from my album, Neon Future, in the movie.”

Adam Rymer, president of Nerdist Industries and Legendary Digital Networks, echoed Aoki’s enthusiasm saying, “The film’s balance of horror, comedy, sci-fi and romance is fresh and perfect for the Nerdist audience. We’re excited to share this unique film with the world in a way that only Nerdist Industries can. “

Coming to theaters and VOD platforms this fall, Nerdist Presents: The Hive is the next generation of horror film. Stay tuned to Nerdist.com for more from #TheHive.

Fantastic Fest 2014: THE HIVE – The Review

THE-HIVE

First time feature director David Yarovesky blends equal parts contagion film, psychological drama, and teen romance into a horror film with a lot on its mind. Maybe too much on its mind for some people, but all of the elements hit the right notes for me. THE HIVE isn’t breaking any new ground with its ideas, but it is how the ideas are delivered that makes this worth a watch for fans of infection films. Yarovesky’s art direction and visual sense is particularly strong. His history in music video directing is fairly apparent but doesn’t hinder his aspirations to deliver an emotional and meaningful character driven story. Yes… black goo and grisly gore leave the screen caked in a thick, viscous layer, but the setup leading up to the gory bits has all the heart and character that you’d expect from a coming-of-age comedy.

The film opens with a young man (Gabriel Basso) waking up in a boarded-up cabin. He’s all alone and is confused by how he got there. Words and directions are scribbled in chalk all over the walls. All that is immediately apparent is that he is definitely not physically well as neon blood runs through his veins and a black liquid oozes out of open sores. What follows is a series of flashbacks leading up to how he got in the cabin, showing his days as a summer camp counselor and a girl he began to fall in love with… before he entered the personal hell he is in now.

Yarovesky keeps you guessing right from the beginning to where the story might go. Once you get a little deeper into THE HIVE, you do start to piece together the story quicker than the bewildered lead. I mainly enjoyed the back and forth between the past memories of our protagonist’s time at summer camp and his present day struggle to discover who he is. This is mainly due to Gabriel Russo in the lead. His character evolves naturally on-screen and the chemistry between his raunchy buddy Clark (Jacob Zachar) and love interest Katie (Kathryn Prescott) works to build a humane foundation to unleash the impending horror.

The second half brings some of the mystery that was previously hinted at into the light. We see the origin and consequences of a deadly virus. It’s a concept we’ve seen before, but at least is injected with some energy through  the film’s intense camera-work and choppy edited style. There are elements that eventually come into play that aren’t as successful, such as when the virus-inflicted victims begin speaking in demonic voices. It’s hard to swallow this without immediately thinking of EVIL DEAD. But since Yarovesky took the time to establish the characters, when the threat of the virus rears its nasty, black goo spewing head, you feel the stakes have been properly raised and you fear for the inevitable conclusion.

Considering this is a debut feature, you have to give a little bit of a pass to director David Yarovesky for biting off a little more than he can chew. At times you feel he had a hard time balancing the different elements of the story. For instance, the flashbacks of the science experiment gone wrong aren’t explained enough to really warrant their inclusion in the story as much as they are. Mixing pseudo-science such as the transferring of brain signals and cerebral medical experiments into the horror arena can sometimes make for a messy experiment. The way Yarovesky mixes everything so confidently though is worth applauding. THE HIVE is a bold and visually striking feature that signals the arrival of a new voice in horror. It’s a strong first feature that succeeds at doing things right, even if we’ve seen many of these things before.

SUPER 8 – The Review

If you have any sort of affinity towards sci-fi, or just good movies, you need to see SUPER 8.

Joe and his friends love movies. In fact, they spend all of their free time making their very own zombie film. Then it happened. After sneaking out after curfew to get some night footage at the local train station, they witnessed a horrible train crash. The kids barely had time to think before the United States Air Force was scouring the area on an emergency clean up. What was on that train that would require the military to come in so fast, and why were they being so secretive. Despite the increasing presence of the military in their town, these kids continue on their mission… to finish their movie.

This movie knocked my socks off! I know this will be said a lot, but this film reminds me of a  THE GOONIES / CLOVERFIELD mash up, which are both great films. Needless to say, I was beyond pleased! This film had adventure, self discovery, action, comedy, zombies (for their film) AND AN ALIEN! WOW!

Joel Courtney, who plays the lead character of Joe Lamb is phenomenal. This is his first starring film, and he knocked it out of the park! His character is a quiet kid who just lost his mother to an accident at work. He is now forced to live with his father, who he has never been close to. His father (Kyle Chandler as Jackson Lamb) is a local police officer that bury’s himself in his work. The thing that I really enjoyed about Joel’s character is the depth. Sure, this kid is a bit of a pushover, but there is also a sense of kindness in his eyes. His character is extremely sentimental, and very well rounded. Watching the development from a quiet sheep, which his best friend Charles (Riley Griffiths) pushes around a great deal, to the brave, danger facing, alien chasing kid that we see at the end of the film is quite a journey. They took a great deal of time and care in creating this character, and it shows!

Joe Lamb’s friends are… well… awesome! Cary, played by Ryan Lee is my favorite of the friends by far! Not only does this kid have a mouth like a sailor, but he enjoys setting things on fire. Lee’s character adds a comedic tones that adds to the many elements of this film. Ryan Lee is a fantastic actor, and I thoroughly enjoyed watching him on film! Elle Fanning (Alice Dainard) and Riley Griffiths (Charles) had the most screen time out of the friends. Fanning, playing Joe’s love interest, and Riley, playing the pushy best friend and director, both added some great elements to their characters. Fanning’s character played her “bad girl from a troubled home” with a richness. You can see right away that there is a lot brewing inside of her, especially the first time she rehearses her lines for their zombie film. Griffiths character tries to appear bossy and tough, but is the first to get scared when trouble hits. I always appreciate when things aren’t what they seem, especially in a character. I think this is the first movie in a very long time where I enjoyed every casting choice!

The effects in this film were superb! The train crash actually had me nervous as I watched. They didn’t go over the top with aliens and cheesy effects. Instead, the effects were used to enhance the story, and were done to perfection. Would I have liked to see a little more alien? Sure, but at the same time, I appreciate how the story was concentrated on the characters rather than focusing all of the attention on the alien. Spielberg has always done a great job of making aliens with depth, and this is no exception.

SPOILER BELOW

Towards the end of the film, I really felt horrible for how the human race treated that poor creature. Spielberg is very good about making sure that his creatures show their true emotions in their eyes (Perfect example, E.T.). Although there is only one major close up of the alien, they really captured his feelings.

END SPOILER

I could go on and on, or you can go see it for yourself. This whole movie blew me away! This film really shows what a bad ass J.J. Abrams is!

Super 8™ comes with seven photorealistic lenses sporting such effects as infrared, chromatic and x-ray. Users can overlay additional filter effects – like light leaks and vignettes – and “age” their film with a random scratch-and-dirt filter. There’s even a frame-shake effect to top off the old-school feel of Super 8™-made movies.

Users can collect their shots and arrange or delete them to get that perfect narrative, and send their masterpiece off to be developed (no mailbox required: developing film happens entirely within the app). Once the movie is complete, users are transported to the Super 8™ projector room, where pulling down the screen and pressing “Play” on the projector will start their screening. Movies can be shared via e-mail or through social media sites via the iOS’s gallery.

Playing back your movies on the Super 8™ projector may reveal missing frames from the Super 8 Editing Room Film. Be the first to collect all the frames to unlock a new clip at S8editingroom.com!

Best of all, the Super 8™ app is free for a limited time. The app can be downloaded at the iTunes App Store.

SUPER 8, the feature film, is a Bad Robot/Amblin Entertainment production, directed by J.J. Abrams from his original script and produced by Steven Spielberg, Abrams and Bryan Burk.

In the summer of 1979, a group of friends in a small Ohio town witness a catastrophic train crash while making a super 8 movie and soon suspect that it was not an accident. Shortly after, unusual disappearances and inexplicable events begin to take place in town, and the local Deputy tries to uncover the truth – something more terrifying than any of them could have imagined.

The film stars Kyle Chandler, Elle Fanning, Joel Courtney, Gabriel Basso, Noah Emmerich, Ron Eldard, Riley Griffiths, Ryan Lee and Zach Mills.
