New FREAK DANCE Trailer

“When pop comes to lock, when you’re breakin’ on the make, sometimes you got to take a chance and dance.”-Asteroid

Make no mistake, FREAK DANCE is a straight-up musical—a brilliant, musical comedy with dance numbers that rival the very films they are parodying. Adapted by Upright Citizens Brigade co-founder, Matt Besser, from the stage show that ran for more than a year at the UCB Theatre, the comedy skips cheap reference humor and goes right for absurdity.

FREAK DANCE tells the story of Cocolonia, a spoiled rich girl who just wants to dance, so she sets out to join the ranks of some local street dancers. Little does she know that this will ultimately involve her in an epic battle of good and evil between two warring dance troupes. Besser and Neil Mahoney have created a sure to be cult classic featuring a cast of new comedic actors and fellow UCB Theatre founders Amy Poehler, Matt Walsh, Ian Roberts and Horatio Sanz.

UCB Announces Contest to Find the World’s Best ‘Air Grinder’

In advance of their upcoming feature film Freak Dance premiering at the Austin Film Festival Oct. 21-23, the Upright Citizens Brigade is holding the world’s first official “Air Grinding” contest.  Videos must be uploaded to You Tube with the title format: “Freak Dance-Your Name” (e.g. “Freak Dance — Slick Rick”) and the link to your video must be sent to freakdancecontest@gmail.com with your name and contact information.  All entries must be uploaded and emailed  by 11:59pm on Friday October 7th, 2011 when the contest concludes.

The UCB believe that there is no greater scourge to the youth of America than the so-called dancing known as “grinding” or “freak dancing”. In an effort to prove how ridiculous (or even dangerous) this dance can be, the UCB are asking contest participants to show the opposite sex how they look when they are freaking.

Contestants must be 18 or older and submit a video no longer than sixty-seconds of them “air grinding” an invisible dance partner. Adding to the competition is that each contestant must dance portraying a member of the opposite sex.

Freak Dance co-director, Matt Besser said, “Hopefully with this contest we can get people to stop grinding each other, and start grinding the air. We humbly believe our movie Freak Dance will be the most important thing to happen to youth culture since Footloose, both Feetlooses.”

Contestants will be judged by a a panel of independent judges who will determine both a male and female winner based on their ability to excel as an air grinder by combining three (3) levels of criteria:

  • Originality- The ability to demonstrate not only the ability to grind, but to do so with an invisible dance partner that will blow the judges’ minds.

  • Comedy- Anyone can air grind in front of a mirror in the privacy of their bedroom, but can you do it for an audience?  Contestants need to show that they have comedic timing and original air grinding moves.

  • Impersonation- Contestants will not only have to create an original dance that is funny, but must also convince the judges that they are members of the opposite sex.

The judge’s panel will convene on Saturday, October 8th with the winner’s announced on Monday, October 10th and taking home a $500 cash prize and an UCB hoodie.

Remember, Freak Dancing isn’t for kids.

About Freak Dance

Freak Dance, a dance musical parody in the vein of Electric Boogaloo, Step Up, Dirty Dancing, You Got Served and every other dance movie ever made.  The sexy and wealthy Cocolonia must escape her roots and learn to street dance with the help of Funky Bunch, who dreams of being the best dancer ever.  They must save the Fantaseez community center from the Building Department and the evil gang banger dancers before it’s too late.  Will the duo be able to save their home? Only love can save them now.
