Swank/Rockwell CONVICTION Trailer And Poster Debuts

Here’s a look at the new poster and trailer for CONVICTION from Fox Searchlight.

The smell of “Oscar” is wafting around in the air with the prime award season release date of October 15th. Then again, I thought so too last year when Swank starred in the biopic AMELIA and look where that got me come Academy Award time. Still, I wouldn’t rule out a run for a 3rd Oscar for Swank and a possible nomination for Rockwell.

The film’s synopsis:

CONVICTION is the inspirational true story of a sister’s unwavering devotion to her brother. When Betty Anne Waters’ (two-time Academy Award winner Hilary Swank) older brother Kenny (Sam Rockwell) is arrested for murder and sentenced to life in 1983, Betty Anne, a Massachusetts wife and mother of two, dedicates her life to overturning the murder conviction. Convinced that her brother is innocent, Betty Anne puts herself through high school, college and, finally, law school in an 18 year quest to free Kenny. With the help of best friend Abra Rice (Academy Award nominee Minnie Driver), Betty Anne pours through suspicious evidence mounted by small town cop Nancy Taylor (Academy Award nominee Melissa Leo), meticulously retracing the steps that led to Kenny’s arrest. Belief in her brother – and her quest for the truth – pushes Betty Anne and her team to uncover the facts and utilize DNA evidence with the hope of exonerating Kenny.

Directed by Tony Goldwyn, CONVICTION Opens In Select Theatres October 15th.

Danny Boyle Getting His Mountain Climbing Gear on For 127 HOURS

danny boyle

Director Danny Boyle is going to have to trade that Oscar in for a  pickax, and, if I had any skills in Photoshop, whatsoever, I would’ve replaced it myself.  Variety is reporting that the now Academy Award winning director has officially signed on to direct 127 HOURS for Fox Searchlight.  With Simon Beaufoy on hand to script and Christian Colson producing, this means a return of the creative team behind SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE.

The film will tell the harrowing story of mountaineer Aron Ralston, who, in 2003, got his right forearm pinned under a boulder.  He spent five days trapped while slowly amputating his arm with a dull knife.  After freeing himself, he climbed a 65-foot wall and was later rescued by helicopters.

I remember hearing about this story, and, if Boyle and crew are to pull it off with any success, they are going to need an actor who can foot the bill.  That bill being a whole lot of screen time alone and the physical and psychological challenge that comes with the story.  Granted, there may be flashbacks throughout, but, if anyone can pull this off without running into signs of  boredom, it’s Boyle.  Also, unless there are a lot of closeups of the actor’s face, I’m guessing this one is getting a pretty solid R rating.

Production is set to begin next year for a release in late 2010.

Aronofsky Could Be Moving Away From ‘Robocop’

robocop

Production going ahead on one of Darren Aronofsky’s passion projects could, potentially, cause issues with the director helming the ‘Robocop’ remake.   Sources for The Hollywood Reporter’s Risky Biz Blog claim that deals are still being ironed out, but ‘Black Swan,’ the supernatural thriller Aronofsky was planning on shooting next, could be closer to production than previously thought. Trailer for ‘Amelia’ Has Flown In…

 amelia2

The first trailer for ‘Amelia’ is here. From director, Mira Nair (‘The Namesake,’ ‘Vanity Fair’), this biopic is the story of the relationship between famed aviatrix Amelia Earhart (Hilary Swank)  and her husband George Putnam (Richard Gere). Needless to say, I’m no big fan of Hilary Swank and the thought of her possibly winning a 3rd Academy Award for Best Actress has me extremely  concerned.  Add to  the fact that, ever since  AMPAS’s surprising rule change  yesterday, the film  now has a possible chance at one of the 10 slots for Best Picture.  From Fox Searchlight Pictures, ‘Amelia’ opens in limited release October 23rd, 2009.

Werewolves are coming to Fox

Sequels are coming out everywhere you turn.  A new movie called “Bitches”  is trying to make its way to production. This is a movie by director Michael Dougherty and will serve as a sequel to “Trick r’ Treat”. This movie is a drama about a quartet of female friends in New York who are werewolves. Now does this sound at all familiar to anyone. The project is being  picked up  by Fox Searchlight,  which is not a surprise because they are the scary movie production company. Well for right now That is really  all the information that has been given so far but this should be an interesting ride. This movie has let out that they might be planning to release this movie in 2009. If  that is the case 2009 will be the year of the werewolf as two other movies will be making the splash as well.

Fox Searchlight buys Palahniuk adaptation ‘Choke’

choke-movie-still1.jpg

Yes, in the distributor buying game called the Sundance Film Festival, Fox Searchlight has purchased director Clark Gregg’s adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk’s novel Choke. Why should you care? Well for starters, because Choke is the fourth novel by writer Palahniuk (pronounced “Paula-Nick”), who is also responsible for the cult favorite Fight Club. ChuckPalahniuk.net reports the 2 million dollar indie film stars Sam Rockwell (Assassination of Jesse James, Joshua), Kelly MacDonald (No Country For Old Men, Trainspotting) and Angelica Houston (you should know this), and sold to Fox Searchlight for 5 million.

The film follows Victor Mancini, med-school dropout and sex addict, as he struggles to pay for his mother’s hospital care by pretending to choke in crowded restaurants, making heroes of strangers and exploiting their continued kindness once he’s made them look good. Director Clark spoke about his feelings on the original novel to slashfilm.com:

“…there was something about it that felt painfully familiar and really unusual in the way it represented sexuality as another thing — that is a consumer obsession in this country — and it worked for me on those political levels. At the same time I found it to be a really heartbreaking story about how people recover from emotional trauma in their lives and that makes them able to give and receive love.”

The film adaptations of two other Palahniuk novels, Survivor and Invisible Monsters have been in production hell for years, so here’s hoping success with Choke will get them off the ground.

p.s. The film also stars Brad Henke, who was in Miranda July’s You And Me And Everyone We Know, which if you haven’t seen yet you should probably do something about immediately.
