EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE – Review

Michelle Yeoh in EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE. Photo Credit: Courtesy of A24

Michelle Yeoh gives a tour-de-force performance in the wildly creative EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE, as a weary middle-aged laundromat owner whose marriage is failing, business is being audited by the IRS and daughter is becoming estranged – and is the only person who can save the multiverse. The genre-bending, entertaining, crazy EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE actually is all about everything, as Mrs Wang (Yeoh) – Evelyn – confronts her life, choices and everything about life, as she bounces from alternate universe to alternate universe. Michelle Yeoh is the driving force behind this crazy, hard-to-categorize film that is part comedy, mind-bending sci-fi adventure, visual effects extravaganza, martial arts action-er, and family drama. Yeoh is its dazzling star, as this unlikely heroine.

Mrs. Wang’s (Yeoh) American dream hasn’t worked out. She had big dreams when she married Waymond Wang (Ke Huy Quan) against her parents wishes and ran off to America. Buying their own business, a laundromat, was supposed to be a ticket to prosperity. Now Mrs. Yang feels all the work falls on her, handling the business and the books while her silly, impractical husband pastes googly eyes on everything and her daughter Joy (Stephanie Hsu) is often off with her non-Chinese girlfriend Becky (Tallie Medel). Mrs. Wang is preparing for a birthday party for her elderly, widowed, wheelchair-bound father Gong Gong (a wonderful James Hong), who lives with her but still scolds her about marrying against his wishes. On top of it all, Mrs. Wang has an appointment with stern IRS agent Deirdre Beaubeirdra (an unrecognizable Jamie Lee Curtis) who is auditing the Wangs’ business. On her way to the appointment, something very strange happens to Evelyn Wang: she is contacted by a visitor from a parallel universe, who begs for her help to save the multiverse. The visitor looks just like her husband but isn’t him, and hands her an earbud that is a way to blip between universes, where she has very different lives.

Sounds like a mental break, doesn’t it? And the fact that this movie does not start out in the realm of superheroes feeds that skeptical sensation, but it also actually adds to the intrigue of the story as we go down this rabbit hole. Much of the action takes place in the IRS office, in various universes, but Evelyn also gets to sample what her life would be like in other worlds, if she has followed another life path.

In one of the weirder universes, everyone has long fingers that look like hot dogs, and in another, Evelyn is a famous performer. There are common elements to the universes, like a Bollywood movie on the TV and a RATATOUILLE running joke, Evelyn’s life is very different, for better or worse. All the while, the threat to all existence is pressing in, a threat in the form of a bagel with everything – literally everything.

EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE feels somewhat like a cross between a Charlie Kaufman and a Jackie Chan film, with a lot of other things thrown in. This film asks some deep philosophical questions and puts us in a mind-twisting world, but also features comedy, marital arts, romance, and family drama, all with an unlikely heroine forced into a situation where she must do extraordinary things. This wild yet gripping tale, which is divided into three chapters, was directed and written by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, known collectively as the Daniels.

What pulls it all together is Michelle Yeoh’s remarkable performance. It is a rare thing to see a middle-aged ordinary woman at the center of a movie, but Yeoh makes the most of the opportunity to break preconceived ideas. At first, Evelyn Yang is angry and exhausted, frustrated with her life and full of regrets, yet seeing no way out. The visitor from the older world looks like her husband but is clearly not, an experience Evelyn finds disconcerting to say the least. In other universes, Evelyn has different skills and as she flips between them and battles adversaries, her confidence grows. It gives Yeoh a chance to play multiple roles at once and gives the audience the chance to see her display her famous physical skills.

Jamie Lee Curtis is hilarious as the stern IRS agent who becomes a murderous adversary in an alternate universe. She leads a pack of fighters are bent to preventing Evelyn from saving the multiverses and are allied with a shadowy villain called Jobu Tupaki. Later, we see another side to her because nothing and no one is simple in this film.

This wild tale is as visually dazzling as its gifted star Michelle Yeoh. Some of the worlds are as surreal and colorful as a vivid dream or crazy as an acid trip, and as detailed as Tibetan mandala. Flipping between worlds is handled brilliantly, spinning is around as Yeoh’s character is but landing us on our feet long enough to follow the action.

At once silly and serious, this film is endlessly inventive and creative. The visual effects are a delight, and often played with a tongue-in-cheek humor, but directors Kwan and Scheinert keep us from descending into confusion. The pacing is frenetic, and relentless, and dividing the tale into chapters gives the audience a brief moment to catch their collective breath. We never know what twist is headed our way, but it is a delightful wild ride.

The film is an impressive accomplishment but such an enjoyable film that some audiences may not quite realize that, because they are so swept up in its wild ride. This is the rare kind of film with the potential to wow both critics and audiences, at least for anyone with any taste for fantasy or science fiction at all.

EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE opens in theaters on Friday, Apr. 8.

Fantasy Cast: Who should play Ash in ‘Evil Dead’ remake?

fantasycast

With Rob Zombie’s sequel to his remake of HALLOWEEN opening tomorrow, it’s got me thinking about another potential remake in the proverbial “works”… that being a little diddy called THE EVIL DEAD, originally brought to us by Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell.

So, you may… no, most probably ARE asking yourself, “Why the HELL are they remaking THE EVIL DEAD?” If so, you’re certainly not alone. (In fact, you are also not the only one who, on some level, really doesn’t care who plays Ash in the new film, because he’ll never compare to Bruce Campbell, right? We’ll get to that momentarily.) The ultimate question on everyone’s mind is… Who would be able to fill Mr. Campbell’s shoes if they do go through with the remake?

ash_evildead01

I’ve seen a few names thrown around, most of which are ridiculous. I’m personally on the fence here, but leaning towards NOT doing a remake. Regardless, if they do… they do. In which case, I’m also inclined to go the route of finding that special no name newbie that “might” be able to pull it off in a way we can all mostly accept as a fresh take, especially if a talented new director takes on the project. That’s what I’d like to see, if it’s done at all.

Amidst the names being proposed on various Internet forums include: brace yourselves, this isn’t pretty… Seann William Scott (I DON’T THINK SO!); Shia LaBeouf (NO F**KING WAY!); and finally, Ryan Reynolds, a curiously semi-appropriate choice for an actor who has mastered sarcasm, but I just don’t see him being able to truly capture the “essence” of Ash.

ash_evildead03

So, the primary question, which this discussion point is NOT likely to avoid many similar answers, is “why” remake the movie? However, seeing as that’s somewhat a moot point, I ask the more pertinent question… Who should play Ash in the EVIL DEAD remake? Hopefully, it won’t be one of the above mentioned names. Do you have an idea of some “star” that could pull it off? Or, maybe you have a new face, a no name or some rising star you feel fits the bill?

Fantasy Cast: Who should play Jimi Hendrix in the biopic?

fantasycast

Variety reported on August 19 that Thomas Tull of Legendary Pictures is trying to develop a Jimi Hendrix biopic. This has been a project long in gestation, which even had Quentin Tarantino rumored to direct for a period of time back in 2006, which he’s since debunked, but it gives me wiggle room in calling this a Tarantino-themed Fantasy Cast. One thing is for sure, if they want this to succeed, they’re going to need to do it right.

Jimi Hendrix

Jimi Hendrix was an amazing musician and was a true performer on stage. Many critics who claim this biopic is unfilmable do so with the argument that they’ve yet to see an actor who could pull off this challenging role in an effective and respectful way. One person who had thought about taking this on in the past was Lenny Kravitz. Personally, I think this would have been mighty interesting. He’s a musician (a damn good one) and clearly influenced by Hendrix, has much of the look going for him, but the underlying concern would be whether he’s got the acting chops for the drama outside of Hendrix’s performances.

Jimi Hendrix Lenny Kravitz
Andre 3000 Andre 3000 of Outkast was apparently interested in the legendary role back in 2004 when the Hughes Brothers were in talks to direct the biopic. Andre 3000 claimed to have a grasp on Hendrix, who displayed a wild onstage persona while proving a very calm person in private life. Laurence Fishburne was interested for years in playing the role, but at this point I think he’s too old for the part. Fishburne is a great actor, and may have been able to nail the drama when he was younger, but it’s unclear how he would have approached the performance scenes.

Assuming this is even a project anyone can pull off, the underlying concern is the talent. The director will have plenty to do with the success or failure of the film, but who best personifies the man, the music and the legend of Jimi Hendrix? Do you have someone in mind? Is there a clear choice, or should this project simply be filed away as a pipe dream?

Fantasy Cast: Who should play Green Day in a Rock Biopic?

fantasycast

I still remember back in high school being somewhat obsessed with Green Day’s major-label debut album ‘Dookie’. This led me, through the guidance of a good friend, to “discover” their early albums on indie label Lookout! Records and I descended further into fandom. Since those days of youthful enthusiasm, I have grown up a bit and while I am no longer quite such an avid fan of the energetic punk rock band, I still appreciate their music.

Despite a temporary drop in popularity around the turn of the century, Green Day persisted and survived, making a comeback in a big way. Some hardcore punk fans may suggest the band sold out, but they’ve had more hit singles and success since their re-emergence onto the pop rock scene. No one can dispute the 3-member band knows how to create hit songs, with 8 albums and 27 awards, including 3 Grammy’s. Amidst Green Day’s many successes, ‘Dookie’ became a Diamond Album, selling over 15 million copies.

fc_giovaniribisi.pg fc_billyjoearmstrong2

So, it’s not a stretch to imagine one day a film biopic being developed to showcase the band’s rise from indie punk to illustrious pop icons. I’ve thought for a few years now that Giovani Ribisi would be one interesting choice to play the band’s frontman Billie Joe Armstrong. He’s got a familiar look with Billie Joe and he’s a fine actor. The only question is whether he can carry a tune, but there are ways to work around around that.

fc_greenday

While Billie Joe is the voice of Green Day (most of the time) and plays guitar, the band consists of three members… Mike Dirnt on bass and Tre’ Cool on drums. The band has, or had, a distinct image and always had a lively presence on stage. I can totally see James Franco playing Tre’ Cool and, while it may seem odd at first, I can’t help but picture Bradley Cooper as Mike Dirnt.

This is just one geek’s vision, but you probably have your own. If you don’t like these casting options, go ahead and tell us who you see as the perfect cast to play Green Day. Fantasy Cast: Who should play William M. Gaines in a biopic?

fantasycast

As the publisher and co-editor of EC comics and as the publisher for Mad Magazine for more than 40 years, William Gaines was the center of a whole lot of controversy.   In 1947, after a brief stint in the military, Gaines took over his father’s EC comics.   At the time, it stood for Educational Comics, and most of the stories were adapations of Biblical stories.   Gaines would have none of that, and he found his calling in publishing horror stories.

Under the EC Comics logo, he would release such classics as “Tales from the Crypt,” “The Vault of Fear,” ‘Two-Fisted Tales,” and more.   In the 1950s, Gaines gave an unapologetic testimony to a Senate Subcommittee investigating morality in the comic books of the era.

There is so much that could be told in a biopic on the publisher’s life, and here is where you come in today.   Who should play William Gaines in a biopic of his life?

williams gaines

william gaines2william gaines3

In early 2008, it was rumoured that John Landis would be directing the film.   In 2007, a screenplay was being written by Joel Eisenberg (producer of ‘Hollywood Vampyr’).

Who would you cast as Jerry Garcia-look-a-like Gaines?   Would you go with someone who already sports a beard of some sort a la Seth Rogen?   Would you go with a thespian who would have no problem growing the full face-forest out?   Let us know by throwing out your ideas in the comment area below.

Fantasy Cast: Who should play Eliza Doolittle in the ‘My Fair Lady’ remake?

fantasycast

So, perhaps this week’s Fantasy Cast is more geared towards the ladies, but I’m not ashamed to admit that the original 1964 feature film MY FAIR LADY is among the very best of cinematic musicals. Then again, it doesn’t hurt that I find Audrey Hepburn nearly as fascinating as Marilyn Monroe, but not for all the same reasons. Then again, Eliza Doolittle is a character similar in some odd ways to the character of Marilyn Monroe that Norma Jeane Baker created to secure her own fame and success. Hang on, I’ve gone off on a tangent again.

myfairlady01

The 1964 film has been a favorite with the genre fans for decades, starring the beautiful Audrey hepburn alongside Rex Harrison and directed by Geroge Cukor. The story follows a poor cockney flower girl (Hepburn) who happens upon an upper class phoenetics professor (Harrison) who wagers that he can turn her into a high class, proper English-speaking member of society in record time, but fails to recognize the effects it will have on the poor girl as she struggles to cope with her new self.

myfairlady02 It’s recently been revealed that Columbia Pictures and Toledo Productions have optioned the rights to remake this beloved musical. Alan Jay Lerner and Geroge Bernard Shaw are currently writing wrote the script. Nothing has been confirmed yet, but plenty of rumors have been generated. One of such rumors involves the possibility of SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE director Danny Boyle being considered to helm the remake. Of course, no remake of MY FAIR LADY could ever succeed without the perfect actress being cast for the role. Now, to suggest that anyone is more perfect than Audrey Hepburn for this role could be called blasphemous, so we’ll assume the best and work with what we have. Rumors have surfaced here as well with two top contenders being hyped. Some camps are vying for Claire Danes to wear the massive victorian hats, whereas other camps are inclined to go with Keira Knightley. Personally, I feel a third viable candidate to consider is Anne Hathaway. It’s certainly a tough call…
fcf_clairedanes fcf_annehathaway fcf_keiraknightley

There you have it. Three choices for a role that many consider sacred. Of course, nothing says we have to stop there. Who would you like to see cast as Eliza Doolittle? Heck, should the film even be made? If you don’t like these casting options, go ahead and tell us who you see as the perfect “second” choice to Audrey Hepburn. Fantasy Cast: Who should play Michael Jackson?

fantasycast

With the recent passing of Michael Jackson, the Internet has been a buzzing with rumors about the inevitable motion picture biopic that is allegedly already being planned. To be honest, I’m not surprised. The making of a movie about Michael Jackson’s life wasn’t a matter of “if” it would happen, but rather a question of when?

So, with the point being made that it’s only a matter of time before we see a biopic of the King of Pop, the bigger more difficult question emerges… Who in the world is best suited to play Michael Jackson? Theoretically, there would be a need for two different actors with one to play the young Michael, as his time growing up as a member of the Jackson Five was crucial to his developing into the adult pop star and legend he became.

michaeljackson01 michaeljackson04
michaeljackson03 michaeljackson02

One of the first things I noticed when I began cruising the web for talk about this subject was the amount of buzz being given a rumor that Johnny Depp is interested in taking on the King of Pop. Honestly, this is a terrible idea. I’m sure Depp would do his best to honor Jackson’s memory and deliver a good performance, but to imagine him as THE King of Pop just isn’t playing out in my mind. Related to this, it seems there’s a lot more talk of caucasion actors in connection to this role that there are African-American actors, which to be quite frank, bothers me a bit. Let’s be real folks.

I don’t mean to exclude anyone based solely on outward appearance, but there’s just got to be someone out there with the right stuff. This brings me to my personal belief that an undiscovered talent should be sought out to portray one of the most influential music talents since The Beatles. You never know when someone out there may be perfect, if only given an opportunity. This makes me think of Jennifer Hudson, who stepped out on ‘American Idol’ but truly showed her range when cast in ‘Dreamgirls’. Before this, with all due respect, she wasn’t on most people’s radars.

Having considered these points of discussion, let us know what you think. Should there be an effort to seek out an unknown talent to respectably portray the life of Michael Jackson? Or, is there an actor out there already who embodies the necessary strengths and talents to make us believe they’re the King of Pop on the big screen?

Fantasy Cast… Who should play Ernst Stavro Blofeld?

fantasycast

It wasn’t long ago we asked for your opinions on who should play Captain Kirk’s arch nemesis, Kahn, should that character ever be introduced into JJ Abrams’ ‘Star Trek’ universe.  This week, we pose a similar question.

Who should play Blofeld?

blofeld

As the archenemy of one special agent 007, James Bond, Ernst Stavro Blofeld appeared in three Ian Fleming novels and seven films.  Those seven films included six official films and the 1983 knockoff remake of ‘Thunderball,’ ‘Never Say Never Again.’  His appearance has changed slightly with each incarnation, but he is generally remembered as having a bald head and always carressing a white, Persian cat.

Blofeld, also referred to as Number 1, is the leader of SPECTRE (Special Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion).  This secret, evil organization has, for the newer, Daniel Craig, Bond films into Quantum.  Of course, just because the name of the organization is different doesn’t mean Blofeld can’t, possibly show up as one of its highest members.

So, we pose the question again.  Who should play Ernst Stavro Blofeld?  With his different appearances through the history of the Bond film, it really could be anyone filling in.  Of course, with the way the new Bond franchise is headed, the idea of him having a shaved head and stroking a Persian cat might go out the window.  However, the actor who portrays this character should be someone with some depth, some amount of respect behind them.

It would be somewhat of a coup, but it might be interesting to see Max Von Sydow play the character, as he did in ‘Never Say Never Again.’

71940545SJ001_San_Sebastian

Granted, the guy is 80, but he’s still churning out amazing performances just as he did 40 years ago.

If, however, you wanted to go younger but still pull in the same level of acting, the first name that comes to mind is Gary Oldman.

gary-oldman1

Of course, Oldman seems to be the go-to guy for just about any role any more.   The guy can literally play anything under the sun.

So, now, we leave it in your hands.   Who do you think should play Blofeld if that character is ever brought into the new James Bond series?   Would you even have the character show up?   What other famous, Bond villains would you like to see make appearances in this new direction the franchise is taking?   Shoot us your suggestions for this fantasy cast in the comments section below.

Fantasy Cast… Who should play ‘The Goon’ in a Live-Action Movie?

fantasycast

Hey, don’t go getting your panties all in a twist! There aren’t any plans (that I know of) for a live-action movie in the works, but with the animated adaptation of Eric Powell’s awesome comic book series being pieced together, I figured a purely speculative discussion of a live-action version needed to be addressed… you know, just fer tha’ Helluvit!

So, even though the animated film is still essentially in the “script” phase, according to IMDBPro, what is known is that David Fincher is producing the project. How cool is that? We could talk about who should direct ‘The Goon’ but it’s too early for that and honestly, not as much fun as speculating on who would best fit the roles of Franky and The Goon in a live-action movie.

Frames from 'The Goon: Chinatown' Graphic Novel

I will gladly be the first to admit that ‘The Goon’ will not be a story easily translated into a live-action film. The two main characters alone, The Goon and Franky, would have to be handled very carefully. The stylistic element works extremely well in the books, but to try and convey it “exactly” in the movie may prove to be a dicey proposition.

It can be done, however, if you recall Warren Beatty’s ‘Dick Tracy’ (1990) and how well they handled the movie’s villains, especially for the time. Although, one of the great elements of ‘The Goon’ is all the cool characters and creatures… i.e. the Zombie Priest, the slack jaws, The Mudds, Buzzard, Dr. Hieronymous Alloy and all the big nasty monsters The Goon encounters.

The Goon Franky

But, I digress. The focus of this discussion is centered on The Goon and his side-kick (don’t call him that to his face) Franky. These are visually two very different characters. Both of whom carry a tough, hard as nails exterior but The Goon has an inner essence that would require some acting talent. So, who should we place on the casting block?

Possible choices for The Goon:

Possible choices for Franky:

Mickey Rourke Joe Pantoliano
Bruce Willis Steve Buscemi

What do you think? Who should play The Goon and Franky in a live-action version of the popular comic book series? If you have any ideas for which actors best fit the roles, be sure to let us know.

Fantasy Cast… Who should play Morbius in ‘Spider-Man 4’?

fantasycast

Not long ago, we announced news that director Sam Raimi may want to have Morbius written as Spidey’s next nemesis in the coming forth installment in the ‘Spider-Man’ franchise. Personally, this would be really cool and would make way for Raimi to introduce a darker ‘Spider-Man’ story… you know, one that actually works, unlike ‘SM3’.

With the news that followed shortly after about Sony giving Raimi creative control on this project, the odds of this plot detail coming to life became even better. So, with this in mind, we begin asking ourselves who would best fit the role of the scientist Dr. Michael Morbius who accidentally transforms him into a vampire-like creature while attempting to develop a cure for his own terminal disease?

morbius

Dr. Morbius is a character that is both driven and menacing, but maintains a level of humanity as he attempts to find a way to cure himself and resist the urge to fall too deeply into the persona of Morbius the creature. In this way, he is a similar character to that of the Hulk.

In the maelstrom of Internet buzz talk that followed the announcement of Raimi’s Morbius idea, lots of ridiculous speculation and rumors have been popping up. Someone even suggested Robert Pattinson. Robert Pattinson? Argh! If I could get my hands on the moron that suggested his as a “perfect choice” for playing Morbius!

Lord Voldemort Ralph Fiennes has been great as Lord Voldemort in the ‘Harry Potter’ franchise. He is my numero uno pick for the role. He’s an extremely versatile actor with a frightening understanding of the darker side of characters.

Assuming I don’t get my way and Ralph Fiennes is not cast, some other potential actors that may have just the “right bite” for the role could include:

Ralph Fiennes vincentcassellmorb
Ralph Fiennes – I’d love to see him take on the role, combining the intellectual side of Dr. Morbius with his creepier vampirous traits. Vincent Cassell – This may seem like an odd choice on the surface, but he has great talent and a knack for unconventional roles
karlurbanmorb beniciodeltoromorb
Karl Urban – Probably the lesser-known and less obvious choice of the bunch, but he has a fitting combination of appearance and talent. Benicio Del Toro – He has strangely emerged as a popular choice, but it could actually work. After all, Benicio Del Toro never fails to amaze!

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
Here’s another idea to ponder… Morbius isn’t what I would consider a major villain by way of popularity and his background could be called somewhat limited by certain standards. With that said, would it be out of line to suggest switching things up a bit? Maybe make Morbius a woman, or perhaps venture beyond the constraints of his being a white male? This updated character profile could serve as a gateway to a whole new world of options (Del Toro, for example) in creating a memorable villainous performance in ‘SM4’.

morbius2 morbius3

What do you think? Who should play Morbius if Raimi does decide to make him the villain in ‘Spider-Man 4’? If you have any ideas for who should play her, be sure to let us know.

And, if you have any ideas for future Fantasy Casts, shoot us an email with your ideas. You can find all of our email addresses right here!
