LET’S KILL WARD’S WIFE – The Blu Review

wardswife-header

LET’S KILL WARD’S WIFE is an odd dark comedy about a group of attractive young L.A. suburbanites getting away with murder – to be more specific: killing Ward’s wife. Ward’s wife has a name – it’s Stacy (she’s played by Dagmara Dominczyk), and she (according to this movie) deserves to die because she is one horribly domineering battle-ax. She won’t let her husband (Donald Faison) play golf with his three best buddies; personal trainer Ronnie (James Carpinello), writer Tom (Scott Foley), or struggling actor David (Patrick Wilson), who keeps getting cast in shows only to see his character promptly killed off. Stacy also won’t let Ward touch her, make a sound, or even breathe too loudly. Everyone hates her. Ward’s trio of pals joke about killing Amy so their friend can have his life back, but David also goes as far as researching ways to dispose of a body. After Amy actually is killed (kinda sorta accidently) by Tom, the four men and two of their wives (Amy Acker and Marika Dominczyk) spend the rest of the film cutting up and hiding the pieces of her corpse, but not before Ward memorializes his wife’s death by peeing in the bathtub that contains her chopped-up remains. No one seems particularly freaked out about the fact that they’re all accessories to murder, but they are careful not to let Ward’s cop neighbor (Greg Gunberg) in on their secret. LET’S KILL WARD’S WIFE has a happy ending: Ward gets to hang out with his pals again, and the guys get to rekindle the relationships with their own wives. If you think all of this sounds horribly misogynistic and mean-spirited, you’d be right (did I mention Amy has a baby!?), but if taken for what it is – an earnest lesson about how the death of an obnoxious, negative person can improve the lives of those who they touched, LET’S KILL WARD’S WIFE is a fun and sometimes even sweet little comedy that flies by at just 82 minutes. The entire cast plays it at just the right absurdist level (Patrick Wilson is especially pitch perfect), and there are some very funny moments involving the mutilation of Amy’s body.

wardswife3

LET’S KILL WARD’S WIFE is written and directed by Scott Foley with some all-in-the-family casting. In real life, Foley is married to Marika Dominczyk (she plays David’s wife in the movie) who is also the real life sister of Dagmara Dominczyk (Ward’s wife) who is the real life wife of Patrick Wilson. James Carpinello’s real life wife is Amy Acker (she plays Tom’s wife), and also onboard is the real life daughter of Carpinello/Acker and the real life son of Foley/Marika … plus the younger sister of Marika and Dagmara.

LET’S KILL WARD’S WIFE received a brief theatrical run in a couple of cities and the Blu-ray from Well Go USA Entertainment hits stores on March 3rd. We Are Movie Geeks has had a peek.

wardswife7

LET’S KILL WARD’S WIFE isn’t exactly a stunner in the image department with an aspect ratio of 2.39:1, mostly because of the cheap-looking “TV comedy movie” lighting, which tends to be flat and often overly bright. The sense of clarity is usually quite strong, though, with visible fine detail almost always visible in the actors’ faces, hair, and clothing. The contrast is stable, saturation is good, and skin tones balanced, so overall a decent MPEG-4 AVC Blu-ray presentation of a visually uninteresting movie.

wardswife4

Likewise, the audio here is solid but strictly functional, with bare-bones sound design that does what it needs to do and not much more, but the disc’s lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track is mostly sharp and clear.

The only extras are a trailer and about five worthless minutes of outtakes.

Win Tickets To The Advance Screening Of WISH I WAS HERE In St. Louis

WishIWasHere-OneSht-lowres (1)

WISH I WAS HERE is the first movie directed by Zach Braff since his indie breakout hit GARDEN STATE. The original screenplay is by the director and his brother Adam. The new movie tells a funny, touching, universal story of what it means to be at a major crossroads as a parent, spouse, and child – all at once.

Aidan Bloom (Zach Braff) and his wife Sarah (Academy Award nominee Kate Hudson) live in Los Angeles with their two children, Grace (Joey King of Fargo) and Tucker (Pierce Gagnon of Looper). Sarah supports the family with her public service job, while struggling actor Aidan auditions and escapes into fantasies about being the futuristic space knight of his childhood dreams.

WISH I WAS HERE

Gabe (Mandy Patinkin of Homeland), the widowed father to Aidan and bachelor Noah (Josh Gad of Frozen), has been paying for his grandchildren’s schooling but now no longer can. While Gabe musters considerable strength to battle his serious illness, Aidan eschews cultural traditions and embarks on a chaotic attempt to home-school Grace and Tucker. Away from his brother’s household, Noah tries to assert his creativity by crafting a distinctive costume to wow a comic-book convention and woo cosplay enthusiast Janine (Ashley Greene of Twilight).

Aidan’s curriculum for Grace and Tucker leads to some surprising self-discoveries for everyone. Further reassessing his career, his family, and his faith, Aidan realizes that he and those closest to him can find fulfillment by exploring new chapters in their lives.

WISH I WAS HERE opens in St. Louis on July 18th.

SKYLINE Alien Invasion Trailer

If I told you that strange lights were descending on the city of Los Angeles, drawing people outside like moths to a flame, where an extraterrestrial force was threatening to swallow the entire human population off the face of the Earth, would you be mildly worried? Hell, I know I’d be. Even the tagline “Don’t Look Up” warns us in this first teaser trailer for Universal Pictures SKYLINE. Man, whatever happened to the “we come in peace” aliens of CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND?

I’d say this the part where we all put on our coneshaped, tin-foiled hats so that the aliens can’t read our thoughts. Ahem. But we all know who accurately predicted  how things would go down with meeting aliens. Not Hawking, but Dr. Peter Venkman of GHOSTBUSTERS 2. He warned us years ago on his show “World of the Psychic” when he said, “… and that is the whole problem with aliens is you just can’t trust them. Occasionally you meet a nice once: Star Man, E.T… But usually they turn out to be some kind of big lizard!”

Review: ‘Next Day Air’

nextdayairmovie

We have seen the Keystone Cops, now music video director Benny Boom has given us the “Keystone Crooks in the hood”  with his new film ‘Next Day Air’.  Boom’s rookie feature film offers stars Donald  Faison (Scrubs), Mike Epps (Hancock), Wood Harris (The Wire) and Mos  Def (16 Blocks). The problem,   ‘Next Day Air’   is a film suffering an identity crisis… it’s a comedy, that thinks its an action film, that wants to be a comedy. Confused, so was I as I exited this film.

‘Next Day Air’   tells the story of Leo Jackson  (Faison), stoner delivery guy that works at his mom’s delivery service Next Day Air. After his mother (Debbie Allen of Fame) gives him the “come to Jesus” speech and threatens to fire him if he screws up again,   Leo goes out and gets stoned just before delivering a ton of Grade A cocaine to a couple of idiotic criminals. Brody (Epps) and Guch (Harris), fresh off butchering a bank robbery where they stole the surveillance tapes instead of the money, now find themselves with $150,000 worth of drugs. They start dreaming of Escalades and fancy cribs instead of who do the drugs really belong to. That would be the Mexican couple across the hall. Jesus and Chita (Cisco Reyes & Yasmin Deliz) are the dealers for a Latino drug king known as Bodega (Emillo Rivera). Bodega informs Jesus and Chita that the drugs have been delivered and they either find them or he will kill them and their families. So Jesus must find the delivery guy and get the drugs back.

Brody tells Guch that his cousin, Shavoo (Omari Hardwick),  can turn the stolen drugs into cash immediately. Shavoo meets the boys and checks out the buy as Bodega and his gang leave to find Leo. On their second attempt to hijack a Next day Air truck, they find Leo getting high. Bodega persuades Leo into taking them back to where he delivered the “package”. This is sure to end badly.

‘Next Day Air’ delivers on that… It ends badly. My biggest disappointment in this below average comedy is they reduced the best actor in the film to a glorified stand in. Mos Def plays Eric, a next day air driver who steals items from his truck to supplement his income. Def is funny and is totally misused in this film. The other tragic quality of this film is the convoluted writing that has you confused by the time the credits role. Boom who has directed videos for 50 cent and Ciara seems to be lost when jumping from 5 minutes to 90. ‘Next Day Air’ is the package that you don’t want showing up on your doorstep!
