BERNARD AND HUEY screens as part of the 26th Annual Whitaker St. Louis International Film Festival on Sunday, November 5 at 6 PM at landmark’s Tivoli Theatre. For ticket information click HERE
Here’s a rarity. It’s a live-action feature film based on a comic that doesn’t involve brawny men in armored tights wailing on each other (and taking out entire city blocks). That’s because it’s based on a newspaper/magazine comic panel (like “The Far Side”) rather than those brightly colored page-turners from Marvel and DC. This is the brainchild of celebrated cartoonist Jules Feiffer, and uses recurring characters from the pages of the Village Voice and Playboy, spanning thirty years. When we first meet BERNARD AND HUEY, they’re in their early twenties, always on the make (or in their language “looking to make out”). Bespectacled, nebbishy Bernard is bemoaning his last lady, while brunt, surly Huey offers his “lil’ black book” while commenting on any female prospect within his scope of vision. From those first moments we know we’re in Feiffer territory with dialogue so similar to the exchanges between Jonathan and Sandy in the iconic 1971 classic CARNAL KNOWLEDGE. Jump to the present day and nearly 50 year-old Bernie (Jim Rash) has amassed much of said knowledge as a single book editor whose spartan apartment practically has a revolving bedroom door. Then we catch up with Huey (David Koechner), drunk, overweight, slovenly, as he’s being hauled back to his wife by his graphic novelist daughter Zelda (Mae Whitman). He escapes her clutches and heads right to a very stunned old bud Bernie. As the two re-connect, Huey sets up “shop” in Bernie’s pad, and while Bernie begins an ill-advised affair with Zelda, Huey gets his “mojo” back with several ladies including Bernie’s co-worker Mona (Nancy Travis) and his recent ex Roz (Sasha Alexander), an “age appropriate” therapist. When Zelda proves to be her father’s daughter,it’s Bernard that flounders in the “make out” scene.
Director Dan Mirvish expertly capture the Big Apple vibe as the two main characters wander endless streets and debate at countless dives and diners. Rash and Koechner are an engaging unlikely pair who know just the right “buttons” to push with each other (at times there’s a palpable air of potential violence in these encounters). The women here are more than just mere conquests or obstacles, really delivering a sharp verbal “smack-down” to their crude “come-ons (especially Huey). Whitman, in particular. is quite convincing as an artist that believes she just needs the right break, while not accepting any form of criticism about her gruesome imagery (all concern distorting of a certain organ). For fans of the formidable Feiffer, BERNARD AND HUEY is a must movie date.
Alice Eve (“Star Trek Into Darkness,” “Men in Black 3,” “Sex and the City 2”), Emile Hirsch (“Into the Wild,” “Lone Survivor”), and Vanessa Hudgens (“Sucker Punch”, “Spring Breakers”), David Koechner (“Anchorman 1& 2”, “Extract”) and rising comedy star Sebastian Maniscalco will star in the romantic comedy ‘The Pre-Nup”, directed and written by Jonathan Lynn (“Nuns On The Run,” “My Cousin Vinny,” “The Whole Nine Yards”) and sold in Berlin by Content Media Corporation.
Eve, Emile, Vanessa, David and Sebastian join Hugh Bonneville (“Downton Abbey,” “Notting Hill”) in the Jeanna Polley (“The Politician’s Wife,” “Laws of Attraction”) produced film, which is expected to start shooting in June in the UK.
“The Pre-Nup” follows the hilarious consequences of an American groom suggesting to his British bride that they should get a pre-nuptial agreement… the night before their wedding.
Zac (Hirsch) is a well-to-do American investment banker, who couldn’t be more thrilled when he gets engaged to Alice (Eve), a British ex-pat and aspiring novelist. But as soon as the happy news trickles down to his friends and family, trouble flares up. Zac’s father is a former rock star and notorious womanizer who pays more alimony than most lawyers in Beverly Hills put together. With this in mind, he insists that Zac have Alice sign a pre-nup, or he’ll cut Zac off from his multi-million dollar trust fund. Zac struggles with his decision, but ultimately bends to his father’s wishes and asks Alice to sign it.
Alice is offended, believing that a pre-nup insults the very sanctity of their marriage, and her magistrate father (Bonneville) couldn’t agree more. But Alice proves that she’s no pushover by coming at Zac with demands of her own. And so the games begin… because if Zac is going to make Alice sign a pre-nup, she’s going to negotiate every detail of their life together!
Distributors worldwide are being pitched the project in Berlin by Content’s President of Film, Jamie Carmichael, and Content’s SVP Sales and distribution, Jonathan Ford.
Said Carmichael, “Jonathan has packed ‘The Pre-Nup’ with tons of laughs, romance, and characters that are at once so maddening and lovable you can’t help but be hooked. Following in the tradition of great romantic comedies like Notting Hill,’ ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral,’ and ‘The Proposal,’ ‘The Pre-Nup’ is a wholly original romantic comedy of errors about what happens when you mix Brits and Americans, marriage and family, and money with love.’
Emile Hirsch is repped by UTA, Sebastian Maniscalco is repped by UTA and Levity Entertainment Group. David Kochner is repped by UTA and by Brillstein Entertainment Partners. Hugh Bonneville is at UTA as well and repped by Gordon and French in UK. Alice Eve and Vanessa Hudgens are represented by CAA.

Make sure this album is on your list this holiday season. The KRAMPUS – THE ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK will release digitally on December 4, 2015, on Back Lot Music.
The album features the original music created by composer Douglas Pipes (MONSTER HOUSE, TRICK ‘R TREAT), pre-orders available now on iTunes. A CD is forthcoming, while Waxwork Records will distribute the soundtrack on vinyl, pre-orders available starting December 4th at www.waxworkrecords.com. The digital album also features a bonus track of the popular tune “Carol of the Bells,” rewritten and appropriately retitled “Krampus Karol of the Bells.”
When creating the score, Pipes wanted to remain true to the spirit of Christmas. “We used melodies of Christmas carols, sometimes just fragments, sometimes altered, as well as traditional Christmas instruments throughout,” said Pipes. He knew it was going into dark fantasy-horror territory, but to make the score unique Pipes created a theme for KRAMPUS that could work as a simple folk melody and a grand fantasy tale, while evoking a sense that it could be some lost European Christmas melody. “The greatest challenge for the score was moving through Christmas themes and comedy, into a dark fantasy tale, punctuated by aggressive horror music, without losing the thread of any of these styles – all the while keeping the Christmas spirit present.”
Douglas Pipes is a film composer based in Los Angeles, whose feature films include the Academy Award-nominated Sony animated feature MONSTER HOUSE and Warner Bros/Legendary Films cult hit TRICK ‘R TREAT. Awards include “Compositor Revelacion” at the 3rd International Film Music Conference in Ubeda, Spain, and “Best Animation” at the Royal Television Society in the United Kingdom. Nominations include “Discovery of the Year” at the 2006 World Soundtrack Awards in Ghent, Belgium, “Best Music” at the 2007 Saturn Awards, and “Best Horror Score” and “Best New Composer” from the International International Film Music Critics Association (2006 and 2009).
Pipes also works with the alt-rock band The Airborne Toxic Event, providing arrangements and orchestrations for performances with the Louisville Orchestra, Colorado Symphony and Orange County’s Pacific Symphony. Aside from KRAMPUS, recent projects include a score for Alfred Hitchcock’s THE LODGER silent film, which was commissioned by the Dallas Chamber Symphony, the indie comedy LITTLE PARADISE just released on iTunes, Amazon, and other digital formats, and the Lifetime feature films IF THERE BE THORNS AND SEEDS OF YESTERDAY.

The Krampus is the anti-Santa Claus, a wicked beast from the folklore of the Alpine countries of Europe who loves to swat children who have misbehaved at Christmas with his bundle of birch sticks and rusty chains before dragging them in baskets to the underworld. Krampus is celebrated on Krampusnacht, which takes place on the eve of St. Nicholas’ Day. In parts of Europe, party-goers masquerade as devils, wild-men, and witches to participate in Krampuslauf (Krampus Run). Intoxicated and bearing torches, costumed devils caper and carouse through the streets terrifying children and adults alike. Krampusnacht is increasingly being celebrated in other parts of Europe as well as in many American cities and should be a holiday here, like Halloween. Speaking of Halloween, one of my favorite movies on the subject of October 31st was the 2007 anthology shocker TRICK ‘R TREAT directed by Michael Dougherty so imagine my delight when I heard that Dougherty was helming a new film based on Krampusnacht. A boy who has a bad Christmas ends up summoning a Christmas demon to his family home in KRAMPUS which stars Adam Scott, Toni Collette, and David Koechner. KRAMPUS opens December 4th and I cannot wait!
There’s a new trailer for KRAMPUS that’s just been launched! Check it out:
