Danny Elfman’s DARK SHADOWS Original Score To Be Released MAY 8

WaterTower Music will release Dark Shadows – Original Score digitally and in stores on May 8, 2012. The album features original music by Grammy Award-winning and four-time Oscar®-nominated composer Danny Elfman, which is featured in director Tim Burton’s new gothic comedy Dark Shadows.

For more than 25 years, Burton and Elfman have collaborated on some of the cinema’s most beloved and recognizable films and soundtracks, including Big Fish, for which Elfman received an Oscar® nomination; BeetlejuiceBatmanEdward ScissorhandsSleepy HollowCorpse Bride; and, more recently, Alice in Wonderland.

“Tim had some specific ideas about the music on Dark Shadows,” says Elfman. “I knew that the bigger dramatic scenes would be played in a rather grand theatrical manner, but the real treat was tapping into the retro pallet Tim had imagined. He wanted something that payed homage to both the original TV series and other ’70s horror genres as well. For that we kept it minimal, eerie, and atmospheric with only electronics and a few solo instruments carrying the melodies.”

Elfman has also received Oscar® nominations for his scores for Barry Sonnenfeld’s Men in Black, and Gus Van Sant’s Good Will Hunting and Milk. Movie audiences worldwide have also heard Danny Elfman’s unique sound and style in some 80 film scores, including Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man; Brian De Palma’s Mission: Impossible; Martin Brest’s Midnight Run; Jon Amiel’s Sommersby; the Hughes Brothers’ Dead Presidents; Rob Marshall’s Academy® Award-winning Chicago; and Shawn Levy’s Real Steel.

In the year 1750, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England to start a new life in America. Two decades pass and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet—or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy…until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive. Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin and the dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets.

Warner Bros. Pictures, in association with Village Roadshow Pictures, presents an Infinitum Nihil/GK Films/Zanuck Company production, a Tim Burton Film Dark Shadows in theaters and IMAX on May 11, 2012. “Dark Shadows” stars Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter, Eva Green, Jackie Earle Haley, Jonny Lee Miller, Chloë Grace Moretz, Bella Heathcote and Gully McGrath.

The Dark Shadows – Original Score on WaterTower Music will be available digitally and in stores on May 8, 2012; and on the same date, WaterTower Music will also be releasing the Dark Shadows – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, containing eleven songs from the film.

THE HUNGER GAMES Scores T Bone Burnett And Danny Elfman

Santa Monica, CA, June 28, 2011– LIONSGATE has announced an unprecedented film music collaboration between Academy Award® winner and two time nominee T Bone Burnett (CRAZY HEART, COLD MOUNTAIN) and four time Academy Award® nominated composer Danny Elfman (ALICE IN WONDERLAND, SPIDER-MAN) on the music for the highly anticipated film adaptation of THE HUNGER GAMES, based on the first in Suzanne Collins’s runaway bestselling book trilogy. The announcement was made by Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group President Joe Drake.

Elfman and Burnett will be collaborating on the film score, with Burnett also serving as the film’s Executive Music Producer, producing songs for the film and soundtrack.

Said Lionsgate’s Head of Film Music Tracy McKnight of the musical dream team assembled on behalf of the film, “THE HUNGER GAMES is such a special property – it has worldwide mass appeal, but it’s also sophisticated, cerebral, soulful, and rebellious. We needed a composer who can translate these qualities musically, and we have not one but two incredible artists in an absolutely thrilling first time ever collaboration.”

Production president Alli Shearmur is overseeing the production for the studio, and the deals for both artists were negotiated by McKnight with Lenny Wohl, EVP Business Affairs Music & Publishing, on behalf of Lionsgate.

Elfman is represented by Richard Kraft and Laura Engel of Kraft-Engel Management, who negotiated the deal on his behalf.  Larry Jenkins manages Burnett and negotiated the deal with Jason Karlov of Barnes & Thornburg LLP on his behalf. Burnett is also represented by Brian Siberell at CAA.

About The Hunger Games

Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games.  Part twisted entertainment, part government intimidation tactic, the Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which “Tributes” must fight with one another until one survivor remains.

Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy.  If she’s ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

THE HUNGER GAMES is directed by Gary Ross, and produced by Nina Jacobson’s Color Force in tandem with producer Jon Kilik. Collins’ best-selling novel, which has over 3 million copies in print in the United States alone, is the first in a trilogy of novels which have developed a global following.

The film will be released on March 23, 2012.

Review: THE WOLFMAN

Folks leaving theaters may be compelled to howling into the night, induced by seeing Joe Johnston’s remake of Universal’s classic THE WOLFMAN, but don’t assume these are howls of appreciation. While Joe Johnston (JUMANJI, HIDALGO) starts the film out right… dark, moody and Gothic, playing somewhat on the old school vibe that allows the original to remain enjoyable, however the consistency begins to fall apart soon after.

The story is fairly straight-forward… silly man goes out into the dark woods against the town’s warnings, silly man gets attacked and bitten by a powerful creature of the night, silly man becomes a werewolf. We all know the basic premise. However, it’s the underlying story of Lawrence Talbot, played by Benicio Del Toro (TRAFFIC, CHE), and his relationship to Sir John Talbot and his brother’s wife Gwen, played by Emily Blunt (THE YOUNG VICTORIA).

Lawrence is an American actor in London, called away to Blackmoore by his brother Ben’s wife Gwen, pleading for his help locating her husband who recently went missing. Upon Lawrence’s arrival, Ben’s body (or, what was left of it) had already been discovered. This prompts Lawrence to seek out who, or what, killed his brother.

The pace of THE WOLFMAN varies slightly, with a comfortably slow beginning, with the audience being tossed headlong into Lawrence’s first transformation soon after. If there’s one thing done reasonably well in the film, I’d say the transformation effects were effective, believable and better than expected… for the most part. Expect AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON with added CGI tweaking from the transformation scenes.

THE WOLFMAN isn’t a complete flop. The movie has its moments, especially concerning scenes featuring Hugo Weaving (THE MATRIX, LORD OF THE RINGS) as Abberline from Scotland Yard, and Sir Anthony Hopkins (HANNIBAL, FRACTURE) as Sir John Talbot. This plot becomes something of a strange love triangle, of which I found no reasonable use except to quantify Gwen’s involvement in the film’s ending.

The most disappointing element of THE WOLFMAN was the complete failure of the film to be scary. The movie ultimately plays out like a suspense-action flick with werewolves, and when it does attempt to be “scary” it relies solely on stock made-you-jump tactics. For a Gothic monster movie, it’s neither frightening nor is it consistently very Gothic, often removing itself completely from time and place by scenes of over-indulgent CGI-enhanced action sequences.

Another element of THE WOLFMAN I found questionably intriguing was its uneven attempt to be a little funny, relying a great deal on violent humor during the extremely bloody and graphic scenes of an attacking werewolf. Coincidentally, these were the scenes that had the most creative impulse and garnered the most favorable audience reactions.

Other notable elements of THE WOLFMAN that standout include the over-use of “head-on” shots of Lawrence as a charging werewolf, which are absurdly bad, inconsistency in the werewolf’s design as portrayed on screen, especially with its legs, and… on a slightly more positive not, an effective albeit very familiar score from composer Danny Elfman. Overall, THE WOLFMAN isn’t a terribly bad movie, but will likely disappoint fans of the 1941 original.

Danny Elfman Scoring ‘Terminator: Salvation’

Brad Fiedel. Â  Marco Beltrami. Â  Danny Elfman. Â  What do they all have in common? Â  They’ve all now scored a ‘Terminator’ film, as it was reported by MTV on Friday that Elfman would be pulling scoring duty on ‘Terminator: Salvation’.

“I just started yesterday,† Elfman told MTV News from the red carpet of the Critics’ Choice Awards.

Elfman, who has been nominated for Academy Awards for his scores on ‘Men in Black’, ‘Good Will Hunting’, and ‘Big Fish’, said that he had not yet incorporated the original ‘Terminator’ theme into the score yet. Â  He also explained that there was no mandate for him to do so.

“I think if it comes up and it seems appropriate, we will [use it],† Elman said. “And if it doesn’t, we [won’t]. I never really know what to expect when I begin other than just kind of get into it and have fun. Especially a movie like ‘T4’ – just have fun. So that’s what I intend to do.†

It was also reported last month that the ‘Terminator: Salvation’ soundtrack would include an original song by the film’s co-star, Common.

What do you think? Â  Is Elfman a good choice for the ‘Terminator: Salvation’ score? Â  Should the original ‘Terminator’ theme be included? Â  Does this seem less and less like a ‘Terminator’ film with each passing day? Â  Let us know by commenting below!
