Dr. Martin Luther King gave his famous “I have a dream” speech at the landmark 1963 March on Washington, but that momentous event was organized, and even was conceived, by another Civil Rights figure who is far less well-known: Bayard Rustin. The reason why you may not know Bayard Rustin is that in addition to being a fiery Civil Right organizer he was also a gay Black man, in an earlier homophobic time when even hinting someone was gay could unleashed a firestorm that might end a career, or a movement, or even led to arrest.

Although Rustin was powerhouse in the fight for Black rights but he was rarely in the media spotlight, partly for that very reason and also because of his willingness to challenge the status quo while firmly committed to non-violence. While Rustin’s sexual orientation was known to friends and close colleagues, in that different era, being fully out was extremely risky in many ways.

In director George C. Wolfe’s excellent historic drama RUSTIN, Colman Domingo plays Bayard Rustin in RUSTIN, in an inspiring biopic built around this lesser-known yet significant Civil Rights figure and his organizing of the famous March on Washington. Even then, Rustin received little recognition or credit outside the inner circle of Civil Rights leaders and Black elected officials, due to the stigma of even might associated with a gay person.

It is long past time when Bayard Rustin’s story should have been told, and RUSTIN does a fine job of spotlighting this remarkable, brave man.

The film starts with Bayard Rustin (Domingo) brainstorming the idea the march at a party of fellow Civil Rights activist friends. Rustin had been an assistant as well as a close friend of Martin Luther King (Ami Ameen) but rumors of a gay relationship between the friends, which did not exist, had caused them to part ways. As the idea of a massive march on Washington calling for Civil Rights grew, Rustin found himself reaching out to other Civil Rights leaders, including King, to bring everyone to together for the landmark event.

RUSTIN takes us behind the scenes as the march is organized, and reveals the kind of jockeying for position and credit that took place. Some liked the idea of the massive march, others opposed it, arguing that if it failed to draw the numbers Rustin was predicting, it would harm the movement. There were other issues at work, such as Rustin’s past links to leftist politics and differing ideas about the movement itself. And then there were the personality clashes, as the big-personality Rustin did rub some the wrong way.

There are a number of famous Civil Rights figures portrayed in this film played by some stars, including Chris Rock as NAACP leader Roy Wilkins,and Jeffrey Wright as U.S. Representative Adam Clayton Powell Jr., while Ami Ameen plays MLK. CCH Pounder as political activist and educator Dr. Anna Hedgeman and Audra McDonald plays organizer and co-founder of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) which was headed by MLK. The film also spotlights the critical role these women and other women played in organizing the march and in the Civil Right movement, for which they have been underappreciated.

The drama is taut and snappy, unfolding briskly, while offering a look behind to scenes of this moment in history. All the acting is superb but Colman Domingo carries the greatest load as the title character, and he does not once falter in portraying this remarkable man.

RUSTIN is an inspiring, enjoyable and enlightening film about the unjustly-overlooked Bayard Rustin, a giant of a figure in the Civil Rights era, as well as a fascinating look behind the scenes of this famous event. It is also a showcase for the wonderful Colman Domingo, who seems sure to garner awards nominations for his work in this excellent biopic, as is the film itself.

RUSTIN is available streaming on Netflix starting Friday, Nov. 17.

SPIRAL (2021) – Review

If there’s anyone that truly believes in the expression, “Everything old is new again”, they probably live in Hollywood. And they are probably a movie studio exec. That’s because there seems to be a reboot, remake, or (the marketers coined this new phrase) a “re-imagining” of a familiar story or concept. Now, this week, the “old” part of that adage is really being put to the test…or stretched thin. After all, the last one hit theatres less than four years ago, And as for the original 2004 entry, it was followed up by six sequels every year, reminding us of the “B” movie franchises of the 30s and 40s, in which you could count on a yearly visit from Andy Hardy’s family, Tarzan, and Boston Blackie. I’m referring to the SAW series. This weekend we’ll see a new spin (sorry) on them via a new thriller whose original subtitle included “From the Book of Saw”, but will now appear on theatre marquees and box office listings as simply SPIRAL. And around it goes…

…until it lands in the middle of a crowded celebration (with the fireworks, it must be July Fourth). In the packed carnival midway, a woman screams that her purse was snatched. A “plainclothes” cop pursues the thief to a “porta-potty”. But the “perp” has vanished…or so it would seem. The er, “seat” has an opening that leads to a ladder that empties into a subway tunnel. It’s then that the cop becomes the prey of a “pig-mask” wearing fiend with a distorted voice and a knack for gruesome torture devices. The next morning we meet another cop who’s having a bad day (though less deadly). The drug bust that Det. Zeke Banks (Chris Rock) worked solo goes sideways. Which leads to a “dressing down” by his boss, Chief Garza (Marisol Nichols). Zeke tells her that he has to work alone since many of the other cops have branded him a “rat” for helping to take down a “dirty” officer. Even though he’s the son of the precinct’s former captain, Zeke will be assigned a partner, a “green” rookie right out of the academy, Will Schenk (Max Minghella). The two are sent out to work a weird subway death of a homeless guy. But later that day, Zeke gets a special delivery package that ID’s the “vic”. Next to a grisly appendage is the badge of Zeke’s only “work buddy”, Boz. Oh, and there’s a flash drive with an image of a red spiral sprayed on the courthouse door along with an audio message from that same distorted voice claiming that Boz has paid the price for his sins. Everyone in the squad room believes it’s the return of “jigsaw”, or a “copy-cat’. That night Zeke goes over the case with his dad Marcus (Samuel L Jackson), who is also his landlord as Zeke’s marriage is crumbling. The news springs Banks Senior into action, though he shares little with his son. As the investigation continues, the packages and bodies pile up. But why do the deliveries always go straight to Banks? Could there be a connection? Or could he be the killer’s ultimate final goal?

Carrying the dramatic weight of this thriller is the always entertaining Rock, who builds upon his recent much-lauded character work in the FX “Fargo” series. The years have given the celebrated stand-up comic a real sense of gravitas making us believe in his Zeke, a man who strives to be just but is frustrated at nearly every turn, by fate and his surly co-workers. Yet, somehow his humor shines through the somber situations as Zeke spouts endless cynical observations and even tosses off an “inside joke” over a very early Rock screen role (30 years already). His work really elevates the often flimsy material. Much the same can be said of Jackson, who makes a most compelling “tough love” pop for Rock’s Zeke. He shows us that retirement hasn’t worked for Marcus, as a return to “the life” actually puts a “spring in his step”. Unfortunately, after an early scene with Rock, which just crackles with energy, the two are apart for most of the flick, making us hope for another pairing as prickly partners. As Zeke’s actual partner, Minghella is quite believable as the “straight arrow’ who can be a “sounding board’ for Rock’s rants, but can also stand up to some of the questionable tactics while getting the job done “by the book”. He gives us hope for the soured system, while we root for him and his ideals to survive the constant chaos.

Series vet Darren Lynn Bousman strives to bring a gritty sense of reality to the often far-fetched fantasy set-pieces. He sets his sights on the classic police/serial killer flicks like SILENCE OF THE LAMBS and especially SE7EN, but is tossed off course by the formula structure of the SAW legacy. The “boiling point” feel is pushed to the limit early as we are told of the city’s “heatwave” and frequent “brown-outs” which layers everyone with a sheen of sweat along with “pit stains” and slowly rotating fans left over from BODY HEAT. But the atmosphere can’t mask some of the script’s extreme “suspensions of disbelief”. We’ve got to accept that the killer can somehow sneak into places (one, in particular, is pretty darn public) and set up and monitor these Rube Golberg-inspired torture contraptions. One somehow meshed broken bottles with what seems to be a sort-of jet engine. The marriage of machine, grime and sticky gore soon becomes tedious as the victims are told via that wonky voice that they have a way out, which never seems to work. It doesn’t help that the mystery elements are so sloppy. There’s a squad room full of suspects, so when the “splatter ” set-ups are disrupted, it’s easy to zero in on the killer’s true identity. An early injection of Tarantino snark, when Zeke does a comic riff on an iconic Tom Hanks role, it doesn’t come close to QT’s pop culture bits (from Madonna to “Green Acres”). All the entrails in “blue boxes” lead up to a climax that’s like a balloon sputtering out it’s last bit of air before its limp plunge to the ground (I was reminded of the last moments of the recent Oscars telecast). Rock is always compelling but the tired gore formula and familiat serial killer tropes just cause SPIRAL to keep spinning its bloody wheel to little effect or real interest. Time to put that worn ole’ saw back in the cinema tool shed.

Warner Bros. Pictures Will Premiere “Roald Dahl’s The Witches,” Exclusively on HBO Max In U.S. October 22

Audiences across the world can celebrate Halloween starting October 22 with the release of Warner Bros. Pictures and Robert Zemeckis’s reimagined “Roald Dahl’s The Witches,” premiering exclusively on HBO Max in the U.S.  Zemeckis, the Oscar-winning director and master storyteller who gave us “Forrest Gump,” the Christmas classic “The Polar Express,” and the “Back to the Future” trilogy, brings a fresh sense of humor along with warmth and the unexpected to what is sure to be a Halloween favorite: Roald Dahl’s beloved story The Witches.

In addition to the film’s U.S. debut on HBO Max, the film will fly into theatres internationally beginning October 28.

Zemeckis is joined by a world-class team of filmmakers, including Alfonso Cuarón, Guillermo del Toro and Kenya Barris, for this fantasy adventure about a young boy who stumbles upon a secret coven of witches and, with the help of his loving grandmother, tries to stop their evil plan to turn the world’s children into mice. Reimagining Dahl’s beloved story for a modern audience, Robert Zemeckis’s visually innovative film tells the darkly humorous and heartwarming tale of a young orphaned boy who, in late 1967, goes to live with his loving Grandma in the rural Alabama town of Demopolis.  As the boy and his grandmother encounter some deceptively glamorous but thoroughly diabolical witches, she wisely whisks our young hero away to an opulent seaside resort.  Regrettably, they arrive at precisely the same time that the world’s Grand High Witch has gathered her fellow cronies from around the globe—undercover—to carry out her nefarious plans.

Based on the book by Roald Dahl, the screenplay is by Robert Zemeckis & Kenya Barris (TV’s “black-ish,” “Shaft”) and Oscar winner Guillermo del Toro (“The Shape of Water”).  Zemeckis is also producing, alongside Jack Rapke, del Toro, Alfonso Cuarón and Luke Kelly.  Serving as executive producers are Jacqueline Levine, Marianne Jenkins, Michael Siegel, Gideon Simeloff and Cate Adams.

Zemeckis’s behind-the-scenes team includes his frequent collaborators, including Oscar-nominated director of photography Don Burgess (“Forrest Gump”), production designer Gary Freeman, editors Jeremiah O’Driscoll and Ryan Chan, Oscar-nominated costume designer Joanna Johnston (“Allied,” “Lincoln”), and Oscar-nominated composer Alan Silvestri (“Polar Express,” “Forrest Gump”).

Premiering on HBO Max on October 22, Warner Bros. Pictures Presents, an Image Movers/Necropia/Experanto Filmoj Production, a Robert Zemeckis Film, “Roald Dahl’s The Witches.” Rated PG for scary images/moments, language and thematic elements. The film will also release in theatres internationally beginning October 28.

Samuel L. Jackson And Chris Rock Star In First Trailer For SPIRAL – From The Book Of Saw

A sadistic mastermind unleashes a twisted form of justice in SPIRAL, the terrifying new chapter from the book of SAW.

Working in the shadow of an esteemed police veteran (Samuel L. Jackson), brash Detective Ezekiel “Zeke” Banks (Chris Rock) and his rookie partner (Max Minghella) take charge of a grisly investigation into murders that are eerily reminiscent of the city’s gruesome past.

DOLEMITE IS MY NAME – Review

Here’s the latest flick in the multiplex’s recent love affair with show biz of the last century. Well, really the last third of it. Sure there are lots of flicks set in the present day, but maybe filmmakers are more than a tad nostalgic for what they believe was a simpler time. At least the execs want to go back to those pre-internet days when they didn’t have to sweat about the newest releases “beaming’ into homes just as they hit the theatres. And that gives this new flick an ironic twist since it comes from the online streaming giant Netflix. Plus it fits right into the slot between two big movies of the past four months. Tarantino’s Tinseltown fantasy ONCE UPON A TIME …IN HOLLYWOOD was set in 1969, and the recent hit JOKER takes place in 1981(established toward its big finale). So here comes the swingin’ 70s with this rollicking “biopic” about a celebrated entertainer (though ONCE mixes real TV and movie stars with the fictional leads) who delighted in declaring DOLEMITE IS MY NAME.

Well, not his actual name, rather a beloved media alias. The “real deal” dude was Rudy Ray Moore (Eddie Murphy), who’s banging his head against the brick wall of stardom. He can’t even get the DJ (Snoop Dogg) at the LA record store where he Rudy works the register to play his homemade ’45 dance and soul record singles. With middle age approaching, Rudy may have to give up on his dream. But inspiration can come from the unlikeliest of sources. A boozy “street prophet” barges into the store and bellows a lengthy poem (really a “rap”) about a fearless ladies man called “Dolemite”. Later that night Rudy tracks him down and records the poet and his pals’ lurid limericks. A few nights later he rolls into the local nightclub, wearing a colorful suit with a frizzy wig, and regales the audience with stories about his new persona, Dolemite. Hearing of the success of “party albums” by Redd Foxx, Rudy decides to record his “set” with the help of musician Ben (Craig Robinson), “producer” Jimmy (Mike Epps) and “manager” Theodore (Tituss Burgess). The discs (inside a blank cardboard sleeve) fly out of the record shop and attract the attention of a “legit’ distributor. Soon Rudy is on tour, headlining in an Atlanta nightspot. There he sees a tough, zoftig single mother and convinces her to become his protege and opening act, dubbing her Lady Reed (Da’Vine Joy Randolph). Rudy’s next inspiration comes when he treats Ben and Jimmy to a night at the cinema. He convinces them that Dolemite should be in the movies. But he can’t quite convince Hollywood’s distributors (like American International Pictures), though he has an easier time getting the funds from his record company. With a script from aspiring “urban playwright” Jerry Jones (Keegan-Michael Key) and a deal with struggling actor/director D’Urville Martin (Wesley Snipes), Rudy begins setting up a studio in a long-dormant, nearly condemned downtown hotel (he lives on an upper floor). But with the odds stacked against him, can he put together a real Dolemite movie that will play in real theatres? More importantly, will folks plunk down their “bread’ to watch it?

The main reason is to see this is an invigorated, energized Mr. Murphy doing his best screen work since, hmm more than a dozen years (talking about his Oscar-nominated turn in 2006’s DREAMGIRLS). After too many forgettable family flicks and tepid cop/spy “action-ers”, he’s got the role that reminds us of his magical movie charisma. His take on Rudy Ray is most endearing as a street hustler grabbing for that “brass ring” before he’s flung from the carousel and out of the show biz carnival. On stage, Murphy fills up the room with the swagging Dolemite alias, but we get to see his vulnerability (actually having “body anxiety issues” the night before shooting the big bedroom sequence), his generosity (reaching out to share his “star” with Lady Redd), and his frustrations (trying to squeeze money and interest from uncaring film studios). Best of all is the “never give up ” attitude as all his plans appear to be plummeting into a “crash-dive”. Yeah, this is why Murphy was the box office “king” for so many years. And despite the decades, we can still see a glint of the mischievious “kid” joyfully shocking his elders with that “naughty talk”.

Happily, his co-stars jump right into the free-wheeling fun of the by-gone movie era. This is certainly the case with Murphy’s..er Rudy’s support squad, the terrific trio of Robinson, Epps, and Burgess. A touch of pathos is provided by Randolph who bursts out of her dour hardened shell thanks to the “pixie dust” of funky fairy godfather Rudy. Her somber gratitude toward her mentor is one of the film’s emotional moments. The current comic scene-stealer Key is “on point” as the “serious” writer who has to be convinced (or conned) into lending his “craft’ to a down and dirty “pimp” superhero. His reaction to Murphy’s display of kung-fu skills is pure panicked perfection. But some of the biggest supporting laughs come from a truly surprising source in another career “jump-start” from Snipes. At first, his D’Urville can’t hide his condescending sneer towards the vulgar hooligans with a camera. Then he’s reminded of his “stalled’ screen work (he winces when reminded of his role as “elevator operator” in ROSEMARY’S BABY), and deigns to be before in front of and behind said camera. Though his character may act as though he’s “slumming”, Snipes really seems to enjoy poking a hole in his character’s pomposity. There are some clever cameos from the aforementioned Snoop and Chris Rock, and a wonderful scene with a favorite TV lawyer playing a studio exec that may have a place for this low budget “epic'”. And Kodi Smit-McPhee (out of the cobalt blue makeup of Nightcrawler in the last few X-Men flicks) is charming as a “green” college film student who gets to enjoy the “guerilla” style of the street shooting.

Craig (HUSTLE & FLOW) Brewer expertly directs this superb cast and keeps the pace snappy and brisk, knowing just when to slow things down for dramatic impact and when to tighten the comedy. Of course he’s got a terrific roadmap in the script from the team of Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski. In a ways this is a companion piece to their now 25 year old (!) gem ED WOOD with Moore as the underdog up-start whose enthusiasm makes up for his lack in resources (money and cinematic technique). Their best penned moments are that of inspired invention, best exemplified in the sequence in which Rudy treats his team to a night at the movies. While the audience (mostly “suburban”) laughs and titters at Billy Wilder’s take on THE FRONT PAGE, Moore’s quartet looks on in stunned silence, baffled as though they had been dropped into a foreign land or a distant planet. Under the marquee light, Rudy declares that they will be in the movies. The art department recreates the period with expert precision from the gaudy fashions to the long luxury cars. This version of LA isn’t quite as fancy as Tarantino’s, but it’s not the urban Hellscape of Phillips’ JOKER (Nary a cloud in the sky). Yes, the production is aces, but the real reason to see this is the return of Murphy, at the top of his “game” once more. DOLEMITE IS MY NAME is an entertainment dynamo.
