Sundance 2010 Preview: THE RUNAWAYS

THE RUNAWAYS brings us a child actor all grown up, and a teenage actor all grown up in Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart. I didn’t think I would be really impressed with Dakota Fanning once her cute little child acting wore off, but after seeing her in PUSH I was quite impressed. Lets not even get started on my love affair with Kristen Stewart…even in TWILIGHT, but especially in ADVENTURELAND. How they will do playing rock legends Cherie Currie and Joan Jett have yet to be seen… they look the part, and I have a feeling its going to kick some major ass.

OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS:

Of all the bands to come out of the 1970s Los Angeles music scene, The Runaways are by far the most uniquely fascinating. This is partially due to their music but more so to the fact that they were teenage girls whose wild and reckless lifestyle was the stuff of legend.

Focusing on the duo of guitarist/vocalist Joan Jett and lead vocalist Cherie Currie as they navigate a rocky road of touring and record-label woes, the film chronicles the band’s formation as well as their meteoric rise under the malevolent eye of an abusive manager.

THE RUNAWAYS plays at the following times:

6:30 PM Sun, Jan 24 Eccles Theatre
8:30 AM Mon, Jan 25 Library Center Theatre
9:00 PM Sat, Jan 30 Temple Theatre

Dakota Fanning as Cherie Currie in ‘The Runaways’?

Not long ago, I wrote a post informing you of a bio-rock-pic being made about Joan Jett and her all-girl band The Runaways from the 70’s. Kristen Stewart (Twilight) is already cast to play Joan Jett and now Dakota Fanning (Push) is in negotiations to play lead singer Cherie Currie.

At 15, Fanning is the same age Currie was when she made her debut with the Runaways as the lead singer who belted out hard-edged tunes like “Cherry Bomb.” Currie became caught up in drugs and a hard-partying lifestyle. – Variety

What are your thoughts? Personally, I’m having a difficult time imagining either of these actresses being able to successfully pull off these roles, but at the same time I don’t want to shoot them down. I like to see actors take on challenging roles, making efforts to expand their craft, but it’s no walk in the park either. Do you think they can convincingly portray these legendary female rockers, or are they destined to fail? If so, who would you rather see rocking out in the leather and lingerie?
