De Palma & De Niro: The Early Films – GREETINGS, HI MOM, and THE WEDDING PARTY – The Blu Review

Review by Roger Carpenter

Before Brian De Palma became THAT De Palma and before Robert De Niro scored big with multiple high-profile roles, they were just two twenty-somethings trying to put together film careers.  De Palma was a film school student and De Niro was a no-name actor.

The two first met around 1963 when De Niro was cast in a supporting role in De Palma’s first film, The Wedding Party. The film is a farce about a groom who visits his soon-to-be bride’s family estate for the forthcoming nuptials.  His two friends and groomsmen (played by De Niro and William Finley), who are there to support him, initially try to talk the groom out of the marriage.  The groom refuses to listen to their arguments and turns them away.  Yet as the day looms large, the groom begins having second thoughts even as the groomsmen have changed their thinking and try to keep the wedding from falling apart.  Also starring De Palma fave Jennifer Salt and Jill Clayburgh, the film wasn’t released until 1969 when De Niro was making a splash in Off-Broadway theater and De Palma’s second film was making a decent amount at the box office.

The Wedding Party is a fun and harmless little comedy, filmed in black-and-white and notable for De Palma’s use of jump cuts and silent film techniques such as the use of title cards to explain scenes as well as fades created by closing the iris of the camera.

While William Finley also became a De Palma fave and appeared in several later films for the director, De Palma recognized De Niro’s talent and so, when the time came to make his third feature (De Palma’s second feature, Murder a la mod, was a critical failure in early 1968), he cast De Niro in the starring role for 1968’s Greetings.

Greetings was a satire about a group of young men dodging the Vietnam War draft.  De Palma’s first feature in color, it was notoriously the first film to receive the brand new X rating from the MPAA, beating out the more famous Midnight Cowboy by five months.  De Niro stars as Jon Rubin, one of a triumvirate of listless young men trying to avoid the war.  De Niro’s character of Jon Rubin was loosely modeled on De Palma himself and is portrayed as an aspiring filmmaker with a taste for Peeping Tom-ism.  A second character was modeled after co-writer Charles Hirsch, who was a Kennedy assassination conspiracy nut.  The film is episodic in nature and, even this early, one can see De Palma’s influences and quirky filmmaking techniques as characters break the fourth wall and read aloud to the audience, the group marches from one location to another similar to the Beatles in A Hard Day’s Night, and other, more esoteric influences.  The film was popular at the time, grossing over a million dollars, and one can easily see why.  The characters are likable and the story quirky and funny.  The film has a decided lean to the political left and can be seen as a protest against the war.

Greetings was popular enough for a sequel to be made entitled Hi, Mom! and released in 1970.  The film again follows De Niro who reprises the role of Jon Rubin. The film begins with Rubin in Vietnam, having managed to only delay the draft.  Upon his return, Rubin’s voyeurism kicks into full force and he strikes upon the idea of expanding upon the burgeoning adult film industry by filming his neighbors through their windows and recording their daily activities.  The film is most notable for a sequence which used experimental theater and cinema verite techniques to record a happening called “Be Black Baby,” an experimental theatrical experience where African Americans helped whites learn what it felt like to be black in America.

De Palma is well-known for his use of split screen and though there is no actual use of the technique present in Hi, Mom!, there is a terrific scene when De Niro, as Rubin, describes his idea of filming ordinary lives through his window to a woman he wants to be a part of the film.  They are standing in the street to the left of the screen.  As De Niro describes a fictional woman coming into her apartment, on the right side of the screen, a light is switched on and viewers see a young woman enter a room and watch as she mirrors the action described by De Niro.  It’s a simple yet brilliant way to use split screen without resorting to expensive opticals yet subtle enough that it took a second viewing for my brain to realize just what De Palma had done and how well-planned the scene was.

All three films, The Wedding Party, Greetings, and Hi, Mom!, represent De Palma’s earliest work and allows film historians to understand De Palma’s influences much earlier than his more famous films like Sisters, Phantom of the Paradise, Obsession, Carrie, Blow Out, and Dressed to Kill.  For viewers who only know De Palma as a horror director, these films also allow one to view De Palma doing some high quality comedy.  Viewing De Niro as a 20-year-old, first-time actor is also fairly amazing.  Already confident in his abilities, one can see from these films that he was obviously going places.

Now Arrow Films USA has packaged these three rarities together in a three disc Blu-Ray presentation.  Each film is a brand new, 2K scan from original film materials (in the case of The Wedding Party, from the actual film negative).  Special features include a commentary for Greetings by De Niro biographer Glenn Kenny, which is an informative and interesting commentary.  Also included is an appreciation of De Palma by Howard Berger, two separate interviews with writer-producer Charles Hirsch, and interviews with several of the actors in the films, along with a trailer for Hi, Mom!  These features help give each film some perspective and allows the viewer to learn the early history of these two important filmmakers.  Finally, the first pressing of this package comes with a collector’s booklet filled with new writing about the films as well as archival interviews with De Palma and Charles Hirsch.

This box set is now available for purchase at Amazon or you can purchase the film directly from Arrow Video at http://www.arrowfilms.co.uk/category/usa/.

De Palma & De Niro: The Early Films – GREETINGS, HI MOM, and THE WEDDING PARTY Available on Blu-ray From Arrow Video December 11th

De Palma & De Niro: The Early Films – GREETINGS, HI MOM, and THE WEDDING PARTY will be available on Blu-ray from Arrow Video on December 11th

In 1963, Robert De Niro stepped in front of a movie camera for the first time. The resulting film, a low-budget black and white comedy called The Wedding Party, would take three years to complete, and another three years to be released, but it would also establish a hugely important working relationship for the aspiring actor. One of the filmmakers, long before he became synonymous with suspense thanks to Carrie, Dressed to Kill and other classics, was Brian De Palma. He and De Niro would team up again in the next few years for two more comedies, both with a countercultural bent.

Greetings, the first film to receive an X certificate in the United States, is a freewheeling satire focusing on a trio of twentysomething friends a conspiracy theorist, a filmmaker, and a voyeur played by De Niro as they try to avoid the Vietnam War draft. Hi, Mom!, originally named Son of Greetings, returns to De Niro s voyeur, now an aspiring maker of adult films, for another humorous glimpse at late-sixties society, this time turning its attentions to experimental theater, cinéma vérité, the African American experience, and the white middle classes.

Brought together for the first time and each newly restored by Arrow Films especially for this release these three films offer a fascinating insight into the early careers of two American cinema s major talents.

CARRIE (1976)  screens Midnights this weekend (April 28th and 29th) at The Moolah Theater and Lounge (3821 Lindell Blvd, St. Louis, MO 63108) as part of  Destroy the Brain’s monthly Late Night Grindhouse film series.

Over the past few decades, almost everything ever written by Stephen King has been filmed for either TV or the silver screen; however, very few of these adaptations have come close to matching the extremely high standard set by CARRIE the first King novel to receive the movie treatment, way back in 1976 (which is when I first saw it at the old Webster Groves Cinema – double feature with DEMON SEED!).

Directed by Brian De Palma, this superb supernatural horror stars Sissy Spacek as Carrie White, a shy and awkward teenage girl who is mercilessly bullied at high-school and further tormented at home by her overbearing, religious zealot mother (Piper Laurie). To make matters worse, at the same time as Carrie experiences her first period (during the film’s unforgettable opening shower sequence), she also discovers that she has developed telekinetic abilities that get more powerful but less controllable as she becomes increasingly distressed.
carrie-1976-3
When a group of spiteful classmates (led by the gorgeous Nancy Allen and a young John Travolta) implement a nasty plan to humiliate Carrie during prom night, the poor girl finally snaps and unleashes her full psychic wrath on the unsuspecting revelers.

Determined to impress with his first major Hollywood movie, director De Palma pulls out all the stops to bring Lawrence D. Cohen’s excellent screenplay to life, displaying a confident and flamboyant style full of the fluid, gliding camera movements and impressive visual trickery that would eventually become synonymous with his work; these stunning visuals, combined with a lush orchestral score by Pino Donaggio and faultless performances from an amazing cast go to make Carrie an unmissable experience. Spacek’s central performance is astonishing: her touching portrayal of the vulnerable and withdrawn Carrie—always wary, yet aching for acceptance—is heartbreaking and anyone who has suffered the indignity of bullying will no doubt find the fiery prom night massacre a strangely cathartic experience. Also worthy of praise are Piper Laurie as Margaret White, who mistakenly believes that she is protecting her daughter, but is actually doing much more harm than good (although her motherly advice about skipping the prom was, for once, right on the money), William Katt as Carrie’s well-meaning prom date Tommy Ross, and Amy Irving as repentant bully Sue Snell, who is unable to thwart her school-pals’ cruel trick.

Stylish, beautiful, tragic, shocking, and even occasionally humorous, CARRIE is an absolute classic that deserves to be enjoyed again on the big screen and you’ll have the chance this weekend at The Moolah!

Brian De Palma Focus Of A24’s DE PALMA Documentary

DePalma_73_fin1_

One of the most talented, influential, and iconoclastic filmmakers of all time, Brian De Palma’s career started in the 60s and has included such acclaimed and diverse films as CARRIE, DRESSED TO KILL, BLOW OUT, SCARFACE, THE UNTOUCHABLES, CARLITO’S WAY, and MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE. The director even delved into sci-fi with the 2000 adventure MISSION TO MARS, featuring a futuristic score from composer Ennio Morricone.

A24 has released a brand new poster for their upcoming movie on the filmmaker. Opening on June 10th, check out the trailer below.

In this lively, illuminating and unexpectedly moving documentary, directors Noah Baumbach and Jake Paltrow engage in a personal and candid discussion with De Palma, exploring not only his life and work but also his singular approach to the craft of filmmaking and his remarkable experiences navigating the film business, from his early days as the bad boy of New Hollywood to his more recent years as a respected veteran of the field.

In the end, what emerges is a funny, honest, and incisive portrait of a truly one-of-a-kind artist, and an exhilarating behind-the-scenes look at the last 50 years of the film industry through the eyes of someone who has truly seen it all.

Watch The Trailer For Brian De Palma’s PASSION

Watch the trailer for Brian De Palma’s PASSION. The original screenplay is by Natalie Carter and Alain Corneau with the screenplay by Brian De Palma. The film will be screened at both the Toronto International Film Festival and the Venice Film Festival in September. Having it’s North American Premiere at TIFF, the film stars Rachel McAdams, Noomi Rapace, Karoline Herfurth and Paul Anderson.

An erotic thriller in the tradition of Dressed To Kill and Basic Instinct, Brian de Palma’s PASSION tells the story of a deadly power struggle between two women in the dog-eat-dog world of international business. Christine possesses the natural elegance and casual ease associated with one who has a healthy relationship with money and power. Innocent, lovely and easily exploited, her admiring protégé, Isabelle, is full of cutting-edge ideas that Christine has no qualms about stealing. They’re on the same team, after all… But when Isabelle falls into bed with one of Christine’s lovers, war breaks out.

Some Notable Names on PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 2’s Director’s List

It’s nice to see that Paramount isn’t jacking around with getting the fastest, cheapest, most uninteresting follow-up to PARANORMAL ACTIVITY out there.  Paramount could have given PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 2 to any number of fresh out of music video/commercial land directors who can make it on the cheap.  Instead, they are going with some notable names with a serious auteur at the top of that list.

According to the LA Times, Paramount has SCARFACE and THE UNTOUCHABLES director Brian De Palma on their list of potential directors.  When you think about it, though, De Palma is a wise choice on so many levels.  While his 2007 REDACTED wasn’t exactly a barn burner when it came to critical or financial success, it definitely proved the director has something to say in that area of film making.  The transition to something like PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 2 (assuming it follows the same “found footage” style of film making) might not be all that out of left field when looking at De Palma.

Other directors on Paramount’s list are SESSION 9 and THE MACHINIST director Brad Anderson and WOLF CREEK director Greg McLean, both of whom could bring an interesting style to the project.

I like this list of potential directors.  Even if none of them end up directing PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 2, it shows Paramount is looking to hand the next installment in what is likely to be an ongoing franchise to someone who won’t just tow the studio line.  They are looking to give it to a director who has a visual style, who has something to say.  The same could not be said for other studios when dealing with other, potential, horror franchises.  Platinum Dunes might want to take a note.

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 2 is set for release on October 22nd.
