Watch Brendan Gleeson In The CALVARY Trailer

poster-565cf5f5-2eda-4670-a1a9-527d8c59d6a5

Brendan Gleeson (THE GUARD) and director John Michael McDonagh reteam in this brand new trailer for CALVARY.

Also featuring Chris O’Dowd and Kelly Reilly, the film screened previously at the Sundance Film Festival and Berlin International Film Festival.

CALVARY’s Father James (Brendan Gleeson) is a good priest who is faced with sinister and troubling circumstances brought about by a mysterious member of his parish.

Although he continues to comfort his own fragile daughter (Kelly Reilly) and reach out to help members of his church with their various scurrilous moral – and often comic – problems, he feels sinister and troubling forces closing in, and begins to wonder if he will have the courage to face his own personal Calvary.

In his review, Guy Lodge (HitFix) says Gleeson, “delivers McDonagh’s sculpted words — akin more to prose than dialogue in many scenes — with classical heft.”

Fox Searchlight Pictures will release CALVARY in select theaters on August 1.

Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt Hitting Up London, Paris and New York on EDGE OF TOMORROW Red Carpet Tour on May 28

ALL YOU NEED IS KILL

On May 28, the stars of EDGE OF TOMORROW will take part in a groundbreaking worldwide event when, for the first time ever, three fan premieres will be held in three different countries in just one day, “resetting” the red carpet as Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt race the clock to make each event before time runs out.

In EDGE OF TOMORROW, Cruise’s character relives the events of one day over and over in an epic battle to save the world. The story begins as he arrives in London, making that city the perfect place to kick off this global event. All times are local:

  • 7:00 a.m. inaugural premiere kicks off on the carpet in London, with a 9:00 a.m. screening.

The film takes both characters to France, where they face off against an insurmountable army of alien invaders.

  • 2:00 p.m. red carpet in Paris, screening at 4:00 p.m.

The final premiere will take the stars back to the U.S.

  • 10:00 p.m. red carpet in New York City, with the final screening—on the edge of tomorrow—at 11:59 p.m.

Between cities, Cruise, Blunt and the film’s director, Doug Liman, will interact with fans via social media as they jet from country to country. A contingent of select press will travel to each premiere, covering the events as they unfold.

There will be live stream components for each of the three events. Those fans on the ground can network via social media using #EOTLive.

Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt star in Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Village Roadshow Pictures’ sci-fi thriller EDGE OF TOMORROW, under the direction of Doug Liman.

The epic action of EDGE OF TOMORROW unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world.

Major William Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop—forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again…and again.

But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt). And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy.

The international cast also includes Bill Paxton, Brendan Gleeson, Noah Taylor, Kick Gurry, Dragomir Mrsic, Charlotte Riley, Jonas Armstrong, Franz Drameh, Masayoshi Haneda and Tony Way.

Liman directed EDGE OF TOMORROW from a screenplay by Christopher McQuarrie and Jez Butterworth & John-Henry Butterworth, based on the novel entitled All You Need is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka.

Opening domestically on June 6, 2014, the film will be distributed in 2D and 3D in select theatres and IMAX.

This movie has been rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi action and violence, language and brief suggestive material.

Director Ron Howard To Helm Maritime Action Adventure HEART OF THE SEA

ron howard

Production is now underway in the UK on the action adventure HEART OF THE SEA. Oscar winner Ron Howard (“A Beautiful Mind”) directs from a script by Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver (“Rise of the Planet of the Apes”) and Charles Leavitt (“Blood Diamond”), based on Nathaniel Philbrick’s best-selling novel about the dramatic true journey of the whaling ship Essex. The film is a co-production between COTT Productions and Enelmar Productions, A.I.E. for Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures.

HEART OF THE SEA stars Chris Hemsworth (Marvel’s “The Avengers,” upcoming “Rush”) as the vessel’s veteran first mate Owen Chase; Benjamin Walker (“Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”) as its inexperienced Captain, George Pollard; Cillian Murphy (“The Dark Knight Rises”) as second mate Matthew Joy; and Ben Whishaw (“Skyfall”) as novelist Herman Melville, whose inquiries into the event 30 years later helped bring the story to light.

In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will, and an almost human sense of vengeance. The real-life maritime disaster would inspire Melville’s Moby-Dick. But that told only half the story. “Heart of the Sea” reveals the encounter’s harrowing aftermath, as the ship’s surviving crew is pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive. Braving storms, starvation, panic and despair, the men will call into question their deepest beliefs, from the value of their lives to the morality of their trade, as their captain searches for direction on the open sea and his first mate still seeks to bring the great whale down.

The film also stars Tom Holland (“The Impossible”) as young seaman Tom Nickerson, and Brendan Gleeson (“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1”) as the same man, 30 years later. Spanish actor Jordi Mollà (“Riddick”) is the captain of another ship, the Archimedes, who tries to warn the Essex of what may lie ahead.

HEART OF THE SEA is produced by Paula Weinstein (“Blood Diamond”), Joe Roth (“Oz the Great and Powerful”), William Ward, Brian Grazer (“J. Edgar”) and Ron Howard. Serving as executive producers are Sarah Bradshaw, Palak Patel and Bruce Berman. William M. Connor is co-producer. The film is based on the novel In the Heart of the Sea, by Nathaniel Philbrick.

Production, which began September 10th, will shoot at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in Herfordshire, UK, and on location in the Canary Islands.

SAFE HOUSE ( 2012 ) – The Review

Exotic faraway locales, car chases, massive firepower, deceitful bosses, and intense hand-to-hand combat have been the staples of spy thrillers for many decades. The genre has been attracting more prestige stars these days because one film series has injected a lot of life ( almost a shot of adrenaline ) and box office bucks into what had become standard ” who’s got the microfilm ” flicks : the Bourne trilogy. These Matt Damon starrers turned up the volume so much that even the king of spies, James Bond took notice and overhauled the almost fifty year film  series ( CASINO ROYALE moves at a much faster pace ). The new spy thriller, SAFE HOUSE, has the non-stop action set pieces, but doubles the protagonists. Taking a break from the raucous ( and often romantic ) comedies, and after a poorly received super-hero stint, is Ryan Reynolds. And for the big prestige factor, how about two time Oscar winner Denzel Washington? As far as buddy-action chase movies go, let’s see how well these two play together.

For the opening scenes of SAFE HOUSE, we get to know novice CIA agent Matt Weston ( Reynolds ). He’s stuck spinning his wheels, assigned to watch over a rarely used secret safe house ( title!) in sleepy Capetown, South Africa. The house is a place the agency uses for detaining and interrogating prisoners before whisking them out of the country. Matt wants to be reassigned to Paris to be closer to his cute French girlfriend ( she’s got no idea that he’s CIA ), but his mentor back at Langley headquarters, Barlow ( Brendan Gleeson ) can’t help. And then rogue ex-agent Tobin Frost ( Washington ) is spotted there. Soon Weston and Frost’s paths collide and both are on the run with killers matching their every move. Matt’s almost over his head as he tries to keep them both alive while making sure the brilliant, more experienced Frost doesn’t make a break for freedom. All the while Matt is in contact with the agency headquarters where Barlow clashes with Linkletter ( Vera Farmiga ) and the agency director ( Sam Shepard ). Can the two men escape the armies of assassins and make to another safe house outside Capetown?

This is one exhausting time at the multiplex. The action set pieces are disorienting and unrelenting. The choppy, quick-cut editing style coupled with the hand-held camerawork is needlessly dizzying. The same hand-held shooting becomes more distracting during the few quiet dialogue scenes and makes it difficult to focus in on the acting. As for the acting, Reynolds proves to be a good action star, but it’s still difficult to buy him as a ” whatever it takes ” killer. Not the case with Washington. His Frost is dead-eyed and stone cold. Unfortunately for Reynolds, Washington dominates every scene they share. Besides his combat skills, Frost is an expert in getting inside an agent’s head and Weston just can’t block him out. We find out a bit of background on Frost, but he remains a mystery. His most powerful scene is one in which he is subjected to ” enhanced interrogation techniques “. A sobering piece amongst all the destruction. The actors back at headquarters have little to do but snipe at each other. Gleeson is condescending, Farmiga is tough ( a cliched b**** on wheels ), and Shepard is the grizzled boss that just wants the mess cleaned up! There’s plenty of mayhem for the video game crowds ( wrecked cars, smashed metal homes, and tons of spent cartridges litter the over-saturated filmed streets ), but very little about the people stays with you. When it comes to spies, these shooters and backstabbers have nothing on Bourne, Bond, Ethan Hunt, or even George Smiley.

Overall Rating: Three Out of Five Stars

ALBERT NOBBS Trailer Starring Glenn Close

Award winning actress Glenn Close plays a woman passing as a man in order to work and survive in 19th century Ireland in this trailer for ALBERT NOBBS. Some thirty years after donning men’s clothing, she finds herself trapped in a prison of her own making. Mia Wasikowska (Helen), Aaron Johnson (Joe) and Brendan Gleeson (Dr. Holloran) join a prestigious, international cast that includes Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Janet McTeer, Brenda Fricker and Pauline Collins.

The film showed to rave reviews and a bustle of Best Actress Oscar buzz for Close at Telluride Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival in September. The 15th Annual Hollywood Film Festival and Hollywood Film Awards will honor the five-time Oscar nominee with the “Hollywood Career Achievement Award” at the festival’s Hollywood Film Awards Gala Ceremony on October 24, 2011.

Glenn Close’s connection to the character of Albert Nobbs stretches back almost three decades to her 1982 performance in Simone Benmussa’s theatrical interpretation of the short story, Albert Nobbs, by nineteenth century Irish author George Moore. “I think that Albert is one of the truly great characters, and the story, for all its basic simplicity, has a strange emotional power,” begins Close, whose turn in the Off-Broadway production prompted rave reviews and garnered the actress an Obie Award.

Even as Close’s career skyrocketed the character remained with her. “There’s something deeply affecting about Albert’s life,” the actress continues, “She never stopped continuing to move me. I became very busy in my career, but always thought that Albert’s story would make a wonderful movie.”

Rodrigo Garcia directs from a script that Glenn Close, along with Man Booker prize-winning novelist John Banville and Gabriella Prekop, adapted from a short story by Irish author George Moore.

ALBERT NOBBS will be in theaters December 2011.
