Check Out The First Trailer For Disney•Pixar’s INSIDE OUT

INSIDE OUT

Check out the new teaser trailer for Disney/Pixar’s INSIDE OUT.

From an adventurous balloon ride above the clouds to a monster-filled metropolis, Academy Award-winning director Pete Docter (“Monsters, Inc.,” “Up”) has taken audiences to unique and imaginative places. In Disney•Pixar’s original movie “ Inside Out,” he will take us to the most extraordinary location of all—inside the mind.

Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it’s no exception for Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions – Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith). The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley’s main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school.

Director Pete Docter is the Academy Award-winning director of “Up.” He made his directorial debut with Disney•Pixar‘s smash hit “Monsters, Inc.,” which was nominated for an Academy Award for best animated feature film. Along with John Lasseter and Andrew Stanton, Docter developed the story and characters for “Toy Story,” Pixar‘s first full-length feature film, for which he also served as supervising animator. He served as a storyboard artist on “A Bug’s Life” and wrote the initial story treatment for “Toy Story 2.” As one of Pixar Animation Studios’ key creative contributors, Docter garnered an Academy Award nomination for his original story credit on Disney•Pixar’s Golden Globe- and Oscar-winning WALL•E.

Jonas Rivera produced the Academy Award-winning “Up,” for which he was nominated for best picture. Prior to “Up,” he had worked on nearly every Pixar film since joining Pixar Animation Studios in 1994, beginning with “Toy Story” for which he served as production office assistant. His subsequent credits include “A Bug’s Life” (as art department coordinator), “Toy Story 2” (as a marketing and creative resources coordinator), “Monsters, Inc.” (as art department manager) and the Golden Globe-winning “Cars” (as production manager).

WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER is the feel-good hit of the summer of 1981. Members of the incredibly funny comedy troupe, “The State”, did this parody film in 2001 of hits like PORKYS and MEATBALLS by over-cliché-ifying (yes, I made up that word) situations such as the nerdy-guy-gets-the-girl (sort of), and a-camp-counselor-saves-the day. Everything seems normal enough in WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER at first. One of the counselors turns out to be gay, one of the kids has a chance to lose his virginity, the nerd guy likes the hot girl with the jerk boyfriend., etc, but once the kids make a trip to town, this entire movie gets truly bizarre. It starts off kinda normal with the counselors drinking and smoking cigarettes. Then smoking pot. Then all of a sudden they attack an old woman, steal her money, and use it to buy cocaine and heroin. From that point on, the movie makes no sense. But I think the randomness is pretty funny. If you’re not in or of the right frame of mind, the movie might just seem “dumb.” However, the performances of Chris Meloni, Amy Poehler, Michael Ian Black, Janeane Garofalo, Molly Shannon, Paul Rudd, and Elizabeth Banks are hilarious, mixing a dark and twisted sense humor and nostalgia for the early Eighties.

ARE YOU HERE – The Review

ayh-image

Confession time. I really wanted to love this movie. I mean, I really, really, really did. Sadly, not everything we want in life comes true. On the other hand, I’m an optimist and try to remain open to compromise. So, while I did not hate the film by any means, I came away only kind of liking ARE YOU HERE.

Matthew Weiner makes his feature film debut as a writer and director with ARE YOU HERE. For those of you in the know, that alone is quite an exciting idea. For those of you who watch too much reality TV and not enough of the good stuff, Matthew Weiner is known for writing substantially on the AMC series Mad Men and the HBO series The Sopranos. Now that I have your attention, I’m afraid things about about to get real, as in real disappointing.

ARE YOU HERE had a lot of promise. The story itself, understandably so from such a renowned storyteller, actually had potential. Strip away the flaws and its a wonderfully touching, poignant and down-to-earth story. A tad preachy, but not in an overbearing, pretentious way. Owen Wilson plays Steve Dallas, a mediocre local weatherman basing his career on his good looks, limited only “by that nose.” Dallas high high hopes and ambition, actively pursuing his dream of becoming a big shot celebrity newsman on a major network. The problem is, he gets bogged down with the personal and family crises of Ben Baker, his long-time best friend, played by Zach Galifiankis.

Ben is a complicated man, with the imagination of a child and the maturity of a teenager. Ben clearly struggles with a mental disability left to speculation until later in the film. This is exasperated when he learns his modestly wealthy father has passed away and the remaining family convenes for the reading his his father’s will. Ben’s uptight, straight-laced sister Terri, played by Amy Poehler of TV’s Parks and Recreation, assumes she and her husband are in line to inherit her father’s farmhouse, land and country store, but when things don’t go her way, she is determines to do whatever she must to right these wrongs.

ARE YOU HERE is an intimately personal family dramedy, and that comes through in the writing. Where it loses some of its luster is with the cast. Owen Wilson and Zach Galifianakis are, for the most part, one trick ponies. As funny as they both can be, they rely almost entirely on their own individual schtick in this film, as they have done with some many films. I feel Galifianakis does make an attempt — albeit small and ineffective — to expand his range a bit, but their performances ultimately hold back the underlying potential of Weiner’s script. As I watched the film, I couldn’t help but consider Wilson’s and Galifiankis’ roles being played instead by Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau in their younger years.

The upside of the cast is two-fold. I found Amy Poehler’s performance to be well-played, and while still carrying a touch of her trademark wit, relatively outside of her normal wheelhouse, showing an increase in range for the comedienne known primarily for television work. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed Laura Ramsey as the recently deceased patriarch’s much younger, very attractive and mysteriously insightful widow. Terri, of course, despises her, Ben finds a renewed closeness to her as his stepmother and Dallas, naturally, finds himself drawn to filling the void left by Ben’s dead father.

Tension ensues. Family drama takes over. All the normal expectations are fulfilled in a film of this genre, but nothing clicks on the level I had hoped. Part of me wanted for Wilson and Galifianakis to exhibit some cosmically-aligned reincarnation of Abbott and Costello and Martin and Lewis, but it never really fully took shape. There was a glimmer, but it quickly faded. Wilson and Poehler did show some chemistry in their disgust for each other, but it plays as a side note to the central story which is Ben’s struggle and ultimately his epiphany to take control of his own life and make compromises for the benefit of his friends and family and not just himself. With a different cast, and a more thoughtful approach to this central story. ARE YOU HERE could have been a significantly more appealing and powerful film, but instead we are left with what feels more like another factory-made dramedy more interested in marquis celebrity draw than compelling storytelling.

As a footnote, which is about the equivalent of screen time she gets, Jenna Fischer is gravely underused and rarely seen in this film’s supporting cast.

ARE YOU HERE opens in theaters on Friday, August 22, 2014.

The thought of time traveling turkeys should be enough to interest anyone in Relativity’s new Thanksgiving film FREE BIRDS. Unfortunately, all you get is a cold turkey.

In FREE BIRDS, Reggie is saved from a life of certain death on a turkey farm by the President of the United States, who has chosen him as “The Pardoned Turkey”. While enjoying his new life at the White House, Reggie thinks he has it made from here on out. He’s sadly mistaken. One night, a turkey named Jake plucks him from his new home, and takes him on a journey back in time, to the first Thanksgiving, to take turkeys off the menu.

The film itself is cute enough, but it left me with the feeling “I’ve seen it, and never need to sit through it again”. It’s a fun enough film for families to take their little ones to before, or even on Thanksgiving, but by next year… no one will remember this film.

Owen Wilson and Woody Harrelson lend their voices to the two main characters of Reggie and Jake. The two of them really have a great chemistry together. Amy Poehler was also a fun voice in this film. She plays Jenny, a turkey from the past, and Reggie’s love interest. My problem is not with the voice acting in this film. They all did a wonderful job. My problem is with the writing.

The film itself lacks something. I was not made to care about the fate of the turkeys as much as I should have due to a lack of character development, I don’t understand how Reggie could call to order pizza from the White House, but humans couldn’t understand him (was the pizza company just guessing that the gobbles on the other end of the phone wanted cheese pizza?), and I have no clue how someone thought that they could get away with mildly adding turkey slaughter to the beginning of a children’s movie. This film is a bit like BILL & TEDS EXCELLENT ADVENTURE without the excellent adventure. It’s just subpar. The whole film is just bizarre.

I will say this, visually, the film was a treat. The 3D was fun, and might be the only thing that keeps people interested in this film from start to finish. The film is just an awkward mess. You’d be better off popping in an old holiday favorite than going to see this in theaters.

free-birds-FREEBIRDS_1Sht_rgb_lowres

On a quaint, family-owned farm, a giant turkey flock lives a quiet, complacent, corn-stuffed life. All everyone cares about is feeding time and grazing in the sun with the Farmer, who they swear will bring them to “Turkey Paradise.” Everyone, that is, except for Reggie (Owen Wilson), a whip-smart turkey whose bad-mouthing of the Farmer and disinterest in the mundane, overfed turkey existence makes him an outcast among his flock.

Reggie’s life is changed forever when an unexpected visit from the President of the United States lands him the esteemed honor of “Pardoned Turkey.” This means living the plush life at Camp David, complete with TV On Demand and cheese pizza. By being pardoned, Reggie has found his own Turkey Paradise - a place where he (and he alone) calls all the shots! That is until Reggie is plucked from his paradise by Jake (Woody Harrelson), the relentless founder–and only member–of the “Turkey Freedom Front.”

Jake has only one mission: to change history forever and save all of turkey-kind.

Directed by Jimmy Hayward and featuring the voices of Owen Wilson, Woody Harrelson, Amy Poehler, George Takei, Colm Meaney, Keith David, Dan Fogler, Carlos Alazraqui, Carlos Ponce, Danny Carey, Lesley Nicol and Dwight Howard, FREE BIRDS will be in theaters November 1st.
