George Clooney, Grant Heslov And Cast Talk THE BOYS IN THE BOAT In New Feature

This summer, the upcoming Paris 2024 Summer Olympics will be held July 26 – August 11.

For the first time in history, the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games will not take place in a stadium. Thousands of athletes will parade in boats along the Seine, the river that flows through Paris, in front of hundreds of thousands of spectators.

A total of 40 sports are in the Olympics, including rowing.

On Christmas Day, George Clooney’s new film, THE BOYS IN THE BOAT, is set for release – and it’s a terrific film!

Based on the best-selling book by Daniel James Brown, The Boys In The Boat tells the story of the bootstrapping University of Washington junior varsity rowing team that — against all odds — went on to represent the USA at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin.

A true underdog tale about working as a team, The Boys In The Boat depicts a beautiful landscape for the social and economic conditions of the time. Deftly navigating the staggering disparity between the haves and the have-nots leading up to World War II, Clooney and team deliver a heartwarming and bold tale of perseverance and unity.

In August 2017, PBS’s AMERICAN EXPERIENCE profiled their story in “The Boys of 36”. Catch it on Apple TV+, and Prime Video.

The new film stars Joel Edgerton, Callum Turner, Peter Guinness, James Wolk, Sam Strike, Thomas Elms, Jack Mulhern, Luke Slattery, Bruce Herbelin-Earle, Wil Cuban, Thomas Stephen Carey, Joel Phillimore, Hadley Robinson.

Around the turn of the century, particularly into the 1920s, rowing was hugely popular. Lately, its domain are colleges and certain country club circles, and the sport often flies under the mainstream radar. Though it still has its fans — ask someone from the Northeast about the Head of the Charles and you’ll get an earful — everyone worked hard to create excitement for a sport that has become more niche.

But rowing crew is not for the faint of heart. It’s a commitment. It’s not just a movie gimmick. Training for the film was rigorous, and rightly so. Actors attended mandatory training sessions twice a day involving weight training, cardio, and everything they’d be doing if they were rowers on a college team. Rowing coaches Terry O’Neill (aka Bad Cop) and Nick Harding (aka Good Cop), put them through the paces from day one.

And in the beginning, they were… not great, says Heslov.

(l-r.) Sam Strike stars as Roger Morris, Thomas Elms as Chuck Day, Joel Phillimore as Gordy Adam, Tom Varey as Johnny White, Wil Coban as Jim McMillin, Bruce Herbelin-Earle as Shorty Hunt, Callum Turner as Joe Rantz, Jack Mulhern as Don Hume and Luke Slattery as Bobby Moch in director George Clooney’s THE BOYS IN THE BOAT An Amazon MGM Studios film Photo credit: Laurie Sparham © 2023 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Says Turner, “When we started rowing, we were useless. Terry O’Neill brought his friends down that he rowed with, and they’re all in their seventies. Terry gave this amazing speech about how rowing is his life, and he said, look at these guys behind me, these are my friends from rowing and you guys are going to make friends for life. There were tears in his eyes, really, he’s an emotional guy. I gave him a hug and we got in the boat, and we rowed so badly. They looked at us and they looked at Terry and the look on their faces was like, “what are you doing?”

“But to the trainers’ credit, about four weeks later we went back out there and they were rowing as a team,” Heslov says. “And then as we started shooting they kept practicing.”

The score (Alexandre Desplat), cinematography (Martin Ruhe) and Production Design (Kalina Ivanov) are fantastic.

Although Desplat is a master of composition, when it came to this film, he was as green as Joe the first day he showed up at rowing practice. “I had never worked on a sports movie,” Desplat reveals. “This one was a good way of starting!” He used this fresh take to his advantage, navigating the uncharted waters from a unique perspective.

Even with perfect attention to detail, there’s still one thing that even the best filmmakers can’t control: Shooting on the water. “I mean, I did The Perfect Storm, I knew what I was getting into.” says Clooney, chuckling.

That didn’t make it any easier.

“There is not one thing about shooting on the water that’s fun,” he continues. “Everything is slowed down. Try running through your swimming pool. You can’t just say, “let’s line up eight boats across with nine guys in each of ‘em, and start the race.” There is a current so the boats all start moving around and they’re not in straight lines, and our boats are moving. If the wind blows, everything’s moving around you. Everything is constantly moving.”

Everyone loves an underdog story and THE BOYS IN THE BOAT is the one movie to see during the holidays.

At the end of the day, the message of pulling together is important.

“We forget that we are all in this stew together and our differences really aren’t that much and there aren’t that many. ,” Clooney says. “Ninety-nine percent of us get along every day and really wish the best for one another and try to work it out. I think that this film reminds us that we are all in this together, and we’re actually on each other’s sides.”

SUFFRAGETTE Movie Honors 95th Anniversary Of Women’s Equality Day With New Poster

m2_289_suff_1sht_V2.indd

Every daughter should know this history, every son write it on his own heart. – Meryl Streep

I come to ask you to help to win this fight. If we win it, this hardest of all fights, then, to be sure, in the future it is going to be made easier for women all over the world to win their fight when their time comes. – Emmeline Pankhurst (1913)

On August 26, 1920 the United States government accorded women the right to vote.

Each year, the President of the United States designates August 26 as Women’s Equality Day to commemorate this landmark decision.

In celebration of the 95th anniversary of the historic moment for equal rights, Focus Features has released the U.S. theatrical poster for SUFFRAGETTE.

S_02430_R_CROP1439579117

The moving and powerful SUFFRAGETTE shines a light on women who risked everything for the right to vote, in early-20th century Britain.

The cast includes Academy Award nominees Carey Mulligan and Helena Bonham Carter and three-time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep.

The female filmmaking team includes producers Alison Owen (an Academy Award nominee) and Faye Ward (a Golden Globe Award nominee), Emmy Award-winning writer Abi Morgan, and BAFTA Award-winning director Sarah Gavron.

This video below from Focus Features commemorates Women’s Equality Day and the impact of Emmeline Pankhurst (played by Meryl Streep in the film).

The stirring story centers on Maud (played by Carey Mulligan), a working wife and mother whose life is forever changed when she is secretly recruited to join the U.K.’s growing suffragette movement. Galvanized by the outlaw fugitive Emmeline Pankhurst (Meryl Streep), Maud becomes an activist for the cause alongside women from all walks of life. When increasingly aggressive police action forces Maud and her dedicated fellow suffragettes underground, they engage in a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse with the authorities, who are shocked as the women’s civil disobedience escalates and sparks debate across the nation.

Inspired by true events, SUFFRAGETTE is a moving drama exploring the passion and heartbreak of those who risked all they had for women’s right to vote – their jobs, their homes, their children, and even their lives. The film also stars Brendan Gleeson, Anne-Marie Duff, Ben Whishaw, Romola Garai, and Natalie Press.

S_046291439579117

Anne-Marie Duff remarks, “This is the time to tell the Suffragettes’ story; there are countries whose regimes diminish women, and countries where there is a terrifying preoccupation with external appearances rather than with women who are achievers.”

Helena Bonham Carter adds, “Around the world, there are still glass ceilings for women. This is a subject we must continue to talk about.”

Meryl Streep notes, “The full measure of our equality as human beings has yet to be gained across the world as well as here at home. I think it will shock people that this was London in 1912-1913, and how hard won the vote is. I don’t think any young woman who sees SUFFRAGETTE can conscientiously sit out any election after seeing how people suffered to give her the right to decide her own future.”

Carey Mulligan reflects, “There is a general apathy towards voting, especially among younger people, despite so many voices being heard online. So for them to see the dedication, hard work, determination, passion, and grief that went into achieving equality in a voting system is important.

SUFFRAGETTE is a universal story for today and about equality; the Suffragettes’ battle for change is still being fought, not only for women’s rights but for equality between races, between societies, between classes. Hopefully our film will inspire people to go out and do something to make the world a better place.”

With a moving score from Oscar winner Alexandre Desplat, SUFFRAGETTE opens on October 23rd in New York and Los Angeles – expanding across the country in the following weeks.

Top 15 Scores/Soundtracks of 2014

POTA
Jerry Goldsmith, PLANET OF THE APES (1968) Nominee for Best Original Score for a Motion Picture

By Michelle McCue and Melissa Thompson

As 2014 comes to a close, we take a look back at some of the best movie music from this past year. The backbone of any movie, audiences heard rocket engines roar, traveled through LEGO worlds and made spiritual connections all thanks to the musical vision of the composer.

In a mix that was soulful, haunting and fun, this year’s soundtracks covered a range of emotions, from light to dark, to atmospheric and assaultive.

Our Top 15 scores wouldn’t be complete without an honorable mention…

Michael Giacchino – DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES

The story about the birth of a civilization and “restart” for the planet Earth was no more prevalent than with the emotional reality of composer Michael Giacchino’s score. Director Matt Reeves’ sequel to 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes found its musical language through the empathetic sounds of the apes in the environment Caesar has created for them.

1. Hans Zimmer – INTERSTELLAR

Making his fifth collaboration with filmmaker Christopher Nolan, composer Hans Zimmer steered clear of any musical expressions he’d explored in the past with the director, and invented a whole new palette for the film with the earthy yet elevating notes of an organ.

We went for a spectacular adventure on a journey into the universe and Zimmer’s score gave humanity’s mission to the stars a very primeval quality.

2. Alexandre Desplat – THE IMITATION GAME, GODZILLA and THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL

Three of the best scores this year, six-time Academy Award Nominee Alexandre Desplat’s music was heard by audiences throughout 2014.

Desplat developed one of his most unusual scores for THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL – one played entirely without traditional orchestral instruments. Instead, he brought in a host of Central European instruments, including balalaikas and the cimbalom, a type of hammered dulcimer common to Eastern European gypsy music.

With THE IMITATION GAME, the composer took us to the Bletchley Park codebreaking centre and inside the Enigma machine. Desplat may see his first Oscar win with his beautiful score to the Alan Turing biopic.

Listen on SoundCloud HERE.

Lastly with the great force of GODZILLA propelling the action and keeping the tension high, Desplat made a big sonic impact with the music. “I’ve never done a monster movie before, so coming to this with more than a hundred musicians—double brass, double horns—allowed me to open the frame of my imagination to another territory, and that’s very exciting.”

3. Jóhann Jóhannsson – THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING

Filled with a charming score, composer Jóhann Jóhannsson’s music for director James Marsh’s THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING was a mix of orchestral instruments and synthesized sounds giving the story of astrophysicist Stephen Hawking and Jane Wilde an ethereal, lovely sound.

Read our interview with Jóhannsson HERE.

4. Atticus Ross & Trent Reznor – GONE GIRL

David Fincher returned again to work with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (THE SOCIAL NETWORK, THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO) for the surging undertow to GONE GIRL.

Trent Reznor said, “In terms of the palette of sounds what’s unique on this one is that we used a more organic, less synthetic soundscape. We didn’t want it to feel too slick so we used a lot of interesting homemade equipment. There are moments where the rhythm is just me tapping on a wooden box so it feels repetitive but drifts around a bit like a human heartbeat.”

5. Antonio Sánchez – BIRDMAN or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance

Drums, cymbals, sticks, mallets and rods were used for the percussion heavy score in director Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s BIRDMAN or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance. Four-time Grammy Award winner and composer Antonio Sanchez effectively sets the pace and rhythm to convey Riggan Thomson’s (Michael Keaton) tonal tightrope between comedy and pathos, illusion and reality.

Read our interview with Sánchez HERE.

6. John Powell – HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2

Composer John Powell’s fantastic soundtrack on HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2 was filled with emotional triumphant orchestral pieces and a resounding chorus making it one of our favorites scores of the year.

Read our interview with Powell HERE.

Listen on SoundCloud HERE.

7. Henry Jackman – BIG HERO 6, THE INTERVIEW and CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER

Jackman had three big scores in 2014.

He composed a grandiose action score for North Korea’s favorite film – THE INTERVIEW. While building on his previous collaboration with Evan Golderberg and Seth Rogen on THIS IS THE END, Jackman scored the film as if it were a classic action-blockbuster to ground the film’s comedic moments. Jackman also created a score that celebrated the comic-book style action of BIG HERO 6, while weaving in the original music from American rock band Fall Out Boy.

But none was more epic than Jackman’s contemporary take on his superhero score for CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER. Up next for Jackman is Kingsman: Secret Service and Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War.

Read our interview with Jackman HERE.

8. Steven Price – FURY

Just as Price did on his Oscar-winning score for GRAVITY, where the sounds of radio waves were incorporated into the score, the British composer was able to find a distinctive voice for the music of FURY by using unusual and unconventional instruments in a fusion with the orchestral, choral and solo writing featured throughout. The daunting sounds put the audience inside the WWII tanks alongside Brad Pitt and his crew.

Read our interview with Price HERE.

9. Marco Beltrami – THE HOMESMAN

Marco Beltrami’ s created a rustic sounding landscape in director Tommy Lee Jones’ THE HOMESMAN. Alongside his work on SNOWPIERCER, THE GIVER and THE NOVEMBER MAN in 2014, the Oscar-nominated composer’s score for THE HOMESMAN evoked the desolation of the homesteaders by drawing out the essence of the wind with an innovative wind piano that contained 175 feet long wires.

Read our interview with Beltrami HERE.

10. James Newton Howard – MALEFICENT and THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY – PART 1

The sweeping emotions and volatile moods of THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY – PART 1 and MALEFICENT are evoked not only in the performances and visual designs but in the music, which once again is driven by an original orchestral score from eight time Oscar nominee James Newton Howard. The music for both films cover the whole breadth of experience from scenes of epic action to moments of epic heartache and intimate poignancy.

Howard also composed the score for Dan Gilroy’s NIGHTCRAWLER and Edward Zwick’s PAWN SACRIFICE.

11. Hanan Townshend – THE BETTER ANGELS

Directed by A.J. Edwards, executive produced by Terrence Malick with a beautiful score by Hanan Townshend (TO THE WONDER), THE BETTER ANGELS music took a poetic approach to Abraham Lincoln’s childhood in the harsh wilderness of Indiana.

12. EDGE OF TOMORROW – Christophe Beck

The composer created a score that captured the suspense, the action and the fun of Cage (Tom Cruise) and Rita’s (Emily Blunt) extraordinary journey in director Doug Liman’s awesome EDGE OF TOMORROW.

Read our interview with Beck HERE.

13. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY – Tyler Bates

Combining a rich orchestral score with familiar rock tunes, composer Tyler Bates’ score for director James Gunn’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY was one of the most popular of the year.

The soundtrack featured classic 1970s songs like Blue Swede’s “Hooked on a Feeling,” “I’m Not in Love” by 10cc, Redbone’s “Come and Get Your Love,” and The Runaways’ “Cherry Bomb.”

Bates also composed the score for the heart-pounding revenge thriller JOHN WICK starring Keanu Reeves.

Read our interview with Bates HERE.

14. A MOST VIOLENT YEAR – Alex Ebert

Another beautiful score from composer Alex Ebert (ALL IS LOST), the haunting music for director J.C. Chandor’s A MOST VIOLENT YEAR transported audiences into the treacherous yet stunning landscape of NYC, 1981. Ebert’s score uses piano, synth, and percussion to capture the tension and emotional pressure faced by Oscar Isaac’s Abel Morales, as he fights to protect his business and family.

Displaying his versatility, Ebert also recently composed the score for Disney’s animated short FEAST, which is currently being shown in theaters prior to BIG HERO 6.

A Most Violent Year (Original Music From and Inspired By) by Alex Ebert by Nyc1981 on Mixcloud

15. THE LEGO MOVIE – Mark Mothersbaugh

Brick by Brick, composer Mark Mothersbaugh’s fun score for THE LEGO MOVIE

Filmgoers went along for the hilarious ride with Emmet, Wyldstyle, Vitruvius, Lord Business, Unikitty, Batman, Benny the Spaceman and Bad Cop/Good Cop and it truly was the most AWESOME time at a movie theater this year!

Read our interview with Mothersbaugh HERE.

Listen as The Hollywood Reporter discusses with Marco Beltrami (The Homesman), Danny Elfman (Big Eyes), John Powell (How To Train Your Dragon 2), Trent Reznor (Gone Girl) and Hans Zimmer (Interstellar) the process behind scoring the top films of the year.

Win Run-Of-Engagement Passes To THE IMITATION GAME In St. Louis

THE IMITATION GAME

Missed our screening earlier this month for THE IMITATION GAME? With all the awards buzz circling this film, WAMG has another contest so you can see the film when it comes out on Christmas Day!

During the winter of 1952, British authorities entered the home of mathematician, cryptanalyst and war hero Alan Turing (Benedict Cumberbatch) to investigate a reported burglary. They instead ended up arresting Turing himself on charges of ‘gross indecency’, an accusation that would lead to his devastating conviction for the criminal offense of homosexuality – little did officials know, they were actually incriminating the pioneer of modern-day computing.

Famously leading a motley group of scholars, linguists, chess champions and intelligence officers, he was credited with cracking the so-called unbreakable codes of Germany’s World War II Enigma machine. An intense and haunting portrayal of a brilliant, complicated man, The Imitation Game follows a genius who under nail-biting pressure helped to shorten the war and, in turn, save thousands of lives.

Directed by Morten Tyldum with a screenplay by Graham Moore and score by Alexandre Desplat, the film stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode, Rory Kinnear, Allen Leech, Matthew Beard, Charles Dance and Mark Strong.

THE IMITATION GAME opens in St. Louis on December 25th.

WAMG is giving away Run-Of-Engagement passes to see THE IMITATION GAME.

This pass admits two (2) to the regular run at any St. Louis area Wehrenberg Theatres, Monday through Thursday excluding holidays.

TIG BENEDICT POSTER FINAL.indd

Alexandre Desplat’s THE IMITATION GAME Soundtrack Available Digitally On November 10, On CD November 24

810ajncVJpL._SL1500_

Sony Classical has announced the release of the original motion picture soundtrack of THE IMITATION GAME, a biographical drama about the English code-breaker Alan Turing starring Benedict Cumberbatchand Keira Knightley. Composed by Alexandre Desplat, the score soundtrack will be available digitally on November 10 and on CDNovember 24.

The opening track of Desplat’s score for THE IMITATION GAME introduces a descending, rippling keyboard theme that reappears in variations in later tracks – first as a string accompaniment that sets the mood for a tragic, dramatic story. The second track skillfully interprets its title, “Enigma” (a reference to both the man Alan Turing and to the code-breaking project that made him famous), with fascinating sounds that evoke the ping of a sonar location and the underwater world, thus playing on the main theme of the story. While “U-Boats” features military sounds, other tracks such as “Carrots and Peas” provide contrasting quietness and emotion, and the musical complexity of “Crossword” relates to the workings of Turing’s brilliant mind.

Throughout the score, the full range of Desplat’s big orchestral sounds come into play, and the composer once again displays his ability to enhance dramatic film scenes with fine music that is worthy to be heard in its own right.

2014 Governors Awards, Arrivals

French composer Alexandre Desplat made his breakthrough on the Hollywood scene in 2003 by composing a highly regarded score for The Girl With the Pearl Earring. He has contributed to over 100 films in France and Hollywood, received six Oscar nominations, and won a Golden Globe in 2006 for The Painted Veil and a Grammy for The King’s Speech in 2011, both in the category Best Original Score. Desplat has also composed for the theatre, including the Comedie Francaise. He has conducted performances of his own music by the London Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as giving master classes at the Sorbonne in Paris and the Royal College of Music in London. He has scored music for a wide range of films from Twilight Saga: New Moon to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (parts 1 and 2).

Desplat has received six Academy Award nominations for Best Original Score for his work on The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Queen, The King’s Speech, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Argo and his beautiful PHILOMENA.

THE IMITATION GAME

New GODZILLA Hi-Res Photos

GODZILLA

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures have released a slew of new images, as well as set photos of director Gareth Edwards, cast and crew, from the epic action adventure GODZILLA. The first movie came out 60 years ago and fans can’t wait to see him stomping across cinema screens again.

For Southern California residents battling the heatwave, be on the lookout for the King of the Monsters looming over the streets of Sunset and LaCienega in Los Angeles.

Imagine the arrival of a great creature that mankind can’t even communicate with, much less control…what would that be like to live through?” asks Edwards. “How would the world react? We’ve all seen or experienced incomprehensible disasters, natural or otherwise, that would seem like a scenario from a movie if they didn’t actually happen. So the challenge of making the ultimate Godzilla movie was to reflect that reality, which gets to the heart of what Godzilla is really about.”

GODZILLA

Before a single frame of GODZILLA had been shot, the director and producers created a 90-second teaser to express the mood they wanted to bring to the film, which they debuted at the annual Comic-Con International before nearly 7,000 screaming fans.

The grainy footage revealed a city reduced to rubble, with the great creature materializing through the smoke and dust, and issuing his deafening roar. Over the imagery, Edwards played the haunting words of Robert Oppenheimer, “father” of the atomic bombs that reduced the Japanese cities Hiroshima and Nagasaki to radioactive ash, quoting the Hindu scriptures to describe the incomprehensible Pandora’s Box they’d opened: “Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds.”

GODZILLA

Godzilla has always had a mystery and duality about him – a being of pure instinct that moves not in concert with humanity, but towering over it as he rises implacably from the sea. “Monsters have always been metaphors for something else,” Edwards notes. “They represent the darker aspects of our nature and our fears of what we can’t control. In a way, Godzilla almost embodies a kind of ‘wrath of God’ – not in a religious sense, but rather nature coming back to punish us for what we have done to the world. In our film, we are definitely tapping into those ideas.”

Guiding the director was a desire to treat GODZILLA as a story first. “It was really important to all of us that the audience cares about what’s going on and why, so I didn’t want it to just be spectacle after spectacle,” he explains. “Instead, the idea was to use some restraint to draw out the tension and suspense and really build up to that moment when we finally reveal Godzilla in all his glory for the first time.”

The director, who honed his visual effects acumen during his early years in British television, relished collaborating with visual effects pioneer Jim Rygiel, who brought Middle-earth to life in “The Lord of the Rings” films. He also got the opportunity to work on some additional visual effects with John Dykstra, whose legend in the industry goes all the back to “Star Wars.”

“Gareth knows how to create 3D monsters on his laptop, which made my job easier and a lot of fun,” says Rygiel. “With other projects I might have thrown up green screen everywhere, but Gareth wanted to shoot entirely against black to better relate to Seamus’ atmospheric cinematography. Visual effects people hate smoke and dust because we have to paint it all out and put it back in, but when you look at the finished shot, you feel the depth and layers, rather than seeing everything clearly in a brightly lit scene.”

The film’s visual effects demands were split among two effects houses, with the London-based Double Negative enhancing environments, and Canada’s Motion Picture Company handling the creature work. The challenge lay in creating seamless, believable interaction among the digital elements and the real world. Rygiel states, “In our film, we have big monster battles, the destruction of cities, a tsunami, intense military operations, and many unusual elements, and each component had to be absolutely based in reality.”

Edwards began conceptualizing the film’s score prior to enlisting Alexandre Desplat to compose it.

“When you work on a film like this, the most inspiring thing to draw on is music,” Edwards says. “The first thing I ever do is create a playlist on my phone with the soundtracks that I’ve loved that I think have the right tone and quality for this film, the haunting emotion of the movie, as well as the sinister horror and darkness that was going to come into play, and Alexandre definitely got a high score.”

Having seen “Monsters,” Desplat appreciated Edwards’ focus on the emotional underpinnings of the characters amid the spectacle, a sensibility that ultimately informed his score for “Godzilla.” “Even though there’s danger, you only share the danger if you empathize with the characters,” the composer states. “With ‘Godzilla,’ what was important to me was emphasizing the great sense of loss surrounding Ford and Joe from the beginning of the film, and that we still feel the trembling of that moment as we follow these broken souls into the present.”

With the great force of Godzilla propelling the action, Desplat also relished the opportunity to make a big sonic impact with the music as he recorded the final score with the Hollywood Studio Orchestra. “I’ve never done a monster movie before, so coming to this with more than a hundred musicians—double brass, double horns—allowed me to open the frame of my imagination to another territory, and that’s very exciting,” Desplat describes.

“Gareth is very sensitive to music and that was fantastic for me. When I played back music for him in my studio, I could see him watching the images and listening at the same time. I tried to always keep the tension high, but the trick was knowing when to release the pressure. For example, a scene of people in the streets can be very mundane. Nothing is happening, but instead of letting the tension slip away, you keep it going. That structure is something I tailored with Gareth as the movie and the score were taking shape, so there’s a great sense of continuity between what you’re seeing and hearing.”

The director marvels, “Alexandre is a bit of a hero of mine musically, and the score he created for this film is just stunning. I’m really excited. I can’t quite believe not only that Alexandre composed the ‘Godzilla’ soundtrack, he’s done my soundtrack. It’s the most amazing gift I think I’ll ever get.”

GODZILLA

In Summer 2014, the world’s most revered monster is reborn as Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures unleash the epic action adventure GODZILLA. From visionary new director Gareth Edwards (“Monsters”) comes a powerful story of human courage and reconciliation in the face of titanic forces of nature, when the awe-inspiring Godzilla rises to restore balance as humanity stands defenseless.

Gareth Edwards directs GODZILLA, which stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson (“Kick-Ass”), Oscar® nominee Ken Watanabe (“The Last Samurai,” “Inception”), Elizabeth Olsen (“Martha Marcy May Marlene”), Oscar® winner Juliette Binoche (“The English Patient,” “Cosmopolis”), and Sally Hawkins (“Blue Jasmine”), with Oscar® nominee David Strathairn (“Good Night, and Good Luck.,” “The Bourne Legacy”) and Bryan Cranston (“Argo,” TV’s “Breaking Bad”).

THE MONUMENTS MEN Cast On “Jimmy Kimmel Live” Sneak Peek; Listen To Clips From Alexandre Desplat’s Score

George Clooney;Matt Damon;John Goodman;Bob Balaban

Check out the sneak peek clip from this Thursday night’s episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live” featuring the cast of director/actor George Clooney’s new film, THE MONUMENTS MEN, including Clooney, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Bob Balaban, Cate Blanchett, and even Kimmel’s arch-enemy, Matt Damon.

The episode also includes a new edition of “Jimmy Kimmel Live’s” famed “Mean Tweets” segment, featuring all six members of “The Monuments Men” cast reading horrible comments from social media about themselves.

5-time Oscar nominee Alexandre Desplat (THE KING’S SPEECH, ARGO) composed the score for the film. As with many of his previous works, Desplat’s music takes the viewer on an exciting journey in the same way Frank De Vol did with THE DIRTY DOZEN and Elmer Bernstein did in THE GREAT ESCAPE.  He totally captures the rousing themes of an old-time, big Hollywood World War II movie.

Listen to clips from the soundtrack.

Based on the true story of the greatest treasure hunt in history, THE MONUMENTS MEN is an action drama focusing on seven over-the-hill, out-of-shape museum directors, artists, architects, curators, and art historians who went to the front lines of WWII to rescue the world’s artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and return them to their rightful owners.

With the art hidden behind enemy lines, how could these guys hope to succeed?  But as the Monuments Men found themselves in a race against time to avoid the destruction of 1000 years of culture, they would risk their lives to protect and defend mankind’s greatest achievements.
