Anime Classic AKIRA Screens Midnights This Weekend at The Tivoli

You got a bad attitude, pops. Lighten up before your arteries harden!”

AKIRA (1988), considered one the classics of not just anime, but animation in general, plays this weekend (July 13th and 14th) at The Tivoli at midnight as part of their Reel Late at the Tivoli midnight series.

akira6-b
AKIRA tells the tale of a secret military project that endangers Neo-Tokyo when it turns a biker gang member into a rampaging psionic psychopath that only two kids and a group of psionics can stop. Got that? I confess I’ve never seen AKIRA. I’ve had plenty of opportunities, so I have no good excuse. Perhaps this weekend I’ll finally take it in.

I asked Brian Lan over at the St. Louis-based Anime fan group Fant-Asia St. Louis why AKIRA is such a classic and he said “AKIRA is certainly one of the anime that is most cited for bringing in new fans to anime. AKIRA is visually exquisite and best appreciated on the big screen.”

akira1
Now lucky St. Louisans can experience the lightning pace and smooth animation that is AKIRA when it plays on the big screen this weekend (July 22nd and 23rd) at the Tivoli as part of their Reel Late at the Tivoli Midnight series.

The Tivoli Announces the ‘Reel Late’ Midnight Line-Up – SUSPIRIA, EVIL DEAD, LIQUID SKY, and More!

“Bad luck isn’t brought by broken mirrors, but by broken minds.”

Another brilliant lineup of midnight movies for the ‘Reel Late at The Tivoli’ to kick off the summer 2018 season. It’s an especially good variety of titles that will draw the late night movie buff crowd with several retro surprises. The Midnight Movie experience has always catered to a college-age crowd and that’s the way it should be. The oldest film this time is YELLOW SUBMARINE from 1968 and the most recent is BATMAN: MASK OF THE PHANTASM  from 1993. There’s no Miyazaki this schedule (a first in a long time!) and only a couple of standards including CLUE     and AKIRA . I’ve been hosting the midnight show at The Tivoli for ten years now title I’m certain LIQUID SKY, ROBOCOP (1987), BATMAN: MASK OF THE PHANTASM, and SUSPIRIA are all  new to the Tivoli midnight roster. I suspect they will draw good crowds.

The Tivoli is located in St. Louis at 6350 Delmar Blvd. in “the Loop”

Here’s the line-up:

June 1-2               SUSPIRIA (Extended Cut)

June 8-9               BATMAN: MASK OF THE PHANTASM

June 15-16          LIQUID SKY (Vladislav Tsukerman)  New digital restoration of the 1983 cult hit! – 35th Anniversary

June 22-23          CLUE

June 29-30          THE EVIL DEAD

July 6-7                 ROBOCOP (1987)

July 13-14            AKIRA

July 20-21            YELLOW SUBMARINE

“You’re gonna need a bigger boat!”

Another brilliant lineup of midnight movies for the ‘Reel Late at The Tivoli’ for the Summer of 2016 season. It’s a typically good variety of titles that will draw the late night movie buff crowd with a couple of retro surprises. The Midnight Movie experience has always catered to a college-age crowd and that’s the way it should be. Looks like we have no less than three animes (if you count FANTASTIC PLANET as an anime) which is understandable since they always draw good crowds. The oldest film this time is the Hitchcock classic from 1954 REAR WINDOW and the most recent is TROLL 2 from 1990. The late night fun kicks off this weekend with a tribute to the recently departed Prince and his 1984 showcase PURPLE RAIN.

The Tivoli Announces the Latest ‘Reel Late’ Midnight Series Line-Up

mid-header

“Gimme some sugar, baby!”

Get get some sugar midnights at the Tivoli! Another awesome line-up of midnight movies including a couple of anime standards and some ‘80s cult nuggets make up the next wave of films at the Tivloi for their “Reel Late at the Tivoli” midnight program! It’s a great selection with the usual variety of standards and classics that draw the late night movie buff crowd.

BLAZING SADDLES from 1974 is the oldest of the bunch and should be great to see on the big screen again. CLUE, SPINAL TAP, and ARMY OF DARKNESS have drawn big crowds in the past. I was unaware that TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES from 1990 had a cult following, but I was surprised last year when SPICE WORLD packed ‘em in, so what do I know?!
