Blu-Ray Review: ‘Adventureland’

Adventureland is a great movie. We’ll start there.   It’s one of those sweet, endearing, raw looks at what it means to be a confused, angst ridden kid struggling to find their place in the world. Although the story sounds cliche, it’s definitely sprinkled with enough   new ideas, that it never falters. Part of what makes the movie stand out from others in the teen dramedy subgenre, is the wonderful direction by  Greg Mottola. The film is sincere, complex and crammed with honest and awkward moments.   Jesse Eisenberg, who plays the film’s stuttering and fumbling hero James, is the perfect underdog. After finding out he doesn’t have the funds required to go to the school he wants, James is forced to take a dead end job at the local amusement park, Adventureland. James soon discovers that the girl he needs may be different than who he thought he wanted. When a complicated co-worker named Em (Kristen Stewart) catches James’ eye, things quickly get serious for the hopeless romantic and the girl who’s too confused for romance.

I’ll refrain from writing just another review for Adventureland and keep this brief. It’s great. You should get it and watch it. However, this here is a review for the super special Blu-Ray edition! Let’s just say that the BD is great. The picture is fantastic (especially during the beautiful night shots), the audio is equally fantastic. It must be mentioned that the soundtrack will rock your auditory cortex with Amadeus for the next three weeks, and you’ll love it.

The special features on the BD are the fairly basic, mildly entertaining fare. There are a few ups though. Greg Mottola’s commentary is funny and there is a pleasant little making-of featurette. My favorite special feature is the mini-documentary on Frigo’s (Matt Bush) Ball Taps. The mini-doc (aprox. 8-10 mins.) features Matt Bush who, teaching by example, explains the different methods he uses for the forgotten art of punching a friend in the balls.

If you want a fun, genuine film, and If you want a classic 80’s story told from a modern perspective (minus the corn) then Adventureland is definitely worth the purchase. Pick it up, and learn new ways to punch your pals in the crotch! You won’t regret it.

adventureland2

OK, sorry for that terrible title of this post but the film’s title and setting open it up to some really bad puns. I will try not to make any more as we take a ride to Adventureland in this review. Sorry.

On Tuesday I posted this recap of the tweetup Miramax held for bloggers in NYC to see Adventureland and meet Greg Mottola and Margarita Levieva. Apparently Miramax seemed to like what I wrote, calling it funny, poignant and well written. Actually those are just terms I thought up when thinking about Adventureland. Miramax just thanked me for the recap and told me that I was wrong about the embargo. There actually isn’t one. I probably should have realized that when Scott wasn’t asked to take down his review from SXSW. So without further ado, here is my review†¦

I have been looking forward to seeing Adventureland since I first heard about it when reading press for Superbad. Most people who know me know that Superbad is one of my all time favorite films. It is a perfect character study that nails the elements of true friendship and brilliantly blends elements of fictional teen fantasy with a realistic high school experience. I was lucky enough to have the chance to tell Greg Mottola how greatly influenced I was by Superbad. I stayed up all night on August 17th 2007 thinking about the film and some of my own film ideas. Actually, that was the night Stuck Like Chuck was born, albeit with the much crappier title Andy and Julie Spend the Night Together. As you can imagine, there is a special place in my heart for Superbad. If you think that will make my review a little biased, you are sorely mistaken. Adventureland is not Superbad Does the 80’s.

In fact, when the film first started, I was a little taken aback. There were some jokes but the humor was not rapid fire. They were talking about sex but it was not overly vulgar. Brennan is a virgin but it’s by choice. I started to realize that this was not even the same style as Superbad. I threw away all my expectations and started to appreciate the film for what it is; a mature superbly written coming of age story with brilliant but flawed characters and a nice amount of subtle humor strewn throughout.

Adventureland was written and directed by Greg Mottola and is based on his own personal experience spending a summer working at a local amusement park. In the film, James Brennan (Jesse Eisenberg) takes a summer job working at Adventureland when he finds out his dad has been demoted and he can no longer afford to go to Europe with his friends for the summer. He may not even be able to afford to go to Columbia for grad school in the fall. While “doing the work of pathetic lazy morons,† he falls for Em (Kristen Stewart), becomes friends with Joel (Martin Starr), scores a date with Lisa P. (Margarita Levieva) and takes some advice from Conell (Ryan Reynolds).

By the end of the screening, I realized that I had not taken a single note. In fact, the notepad that was in my hand at the start of the film was resting on the seat next to me once the lights came up. I’m not sure if I put it down due to laziness or because I was drawn into the film, but I will say the latter because it makes the film and myself look better.

The writing is sharp and perfectly captures what it’s like to be stuck at a summer job. I should know, I’ve been stuck at mine for 5 years. Although my “summer job† became a year round part time position at a library, the idea of terrible patrons and things constantly breaking down definitely resonates with me. Unfortunately, my bosses are not at all like Bobby and Paulette, who are played perfectly by Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig. I wish Bill Hader was my boss. He provides some of the funniest moments in the film and Kristen’s soft-spoken Paulette makes for some hilarious low-key moments. There is one moment of utter brilliance when they are making some of the prizes for the games and Paulette’s solution for a lack of resources is priceless. Another great source of laughs is the pipe-smoking Russian-literature reading Joel. Martin Starr spouts some very funny lines and some choice nuggets of wisdom. He is also great at making fun of himself for some good laughs. Joel has a lot on his mind that he usually tells Brennan but he seems to also have some hidden feelings. And despite not liking his job, there is definitely a sense that he feels comfortable working there.

One actor that really surprised me was Ryan Reynolds. I’ve always been a big fan of him, going all the way back to Two Guys, A Girl And A Pizza Place. He is usually the comic relief but he is also a very good dramatic actor. I thought he was great in Finder’s Fee and Smokin’ Aces, which both had him in more dramatic roles then what he usually plays. In this, his role is very different but he somehow gets you to relate and even feel sorry for Conner despite the fact he is cheating on his wife. For most, on paper the role of Conner could have gone two ways. First, he could have been the fun loving party animal who sleeps around with girls at the park for sport and doesn’t care about anyone except himself. Or he could have been a sleazy a-hole who doesn’t care about anyone except himself and sleeps around with girls at the park for sport. Instead, Mottola crafted a real person and Reynolds brings a great depth and humanity to him. He is funny at times but he also has a lot of personal problems and mixed emotions. It is almost as if he is Van Wilder a few years after college, stuck in a loveless marriage and drained of his sarcastic wit and party vibe. I am actually interested enough in this character that I would be more than willing to watch a spin-off film in which he was the lead.

On the other end of the character spectrum, a slightly more stereotypical offering is Lisa P. who is the embodiment of male adolescent fantasy in the 80’s. In fact, upon her arrival into Adventureland (both the park and the film) the character Munch comes running in before her proclaiming, “Lisa P is back!† to all the male employees. Margarita Levieva plays Lisa P with a certain daftness that fits the flirty stereotype but she also has a sincerity that makes her different and much more likeable than the usual bitchy stock character. At one point during her date with Brennan, Lisa P tells him that he is not like most guys she dates. We get the feeling she may actually like him but we know they are not right for each other. She shouldn’t worry though because she has the look, clothes and dance moves to land anyone else in the park.

The fact that I spent several paragraphs talking about the supporting characters first shows how strong the writing and acting is. It also shows that I don’t know how to properly structure a review. Our protagonist, Brennan, is an intelligent, caring, occasionally awkward college graduate who believes strongly in love and chooses to be a virgin despite several opportunities. I definitely see myself in Brennan and found myself rooting for the hopeless romantic the whole time. And who is the girl that he woos with his bag of pot and awkward attempts at conversation? The lovely Kristen Stewart who does a great job in the role of Em. She is not really sure what she wants but she is a genuinely good person. Just like the supporting characters I mentioned, neither Em nor Brennan are cookie cutter stereotypes but instead are real people that you actually care about.

In addition to the fantastic script and stellar acting, Greg Mottola’s direction is top notch and the cinematography is beautiful. There are some truly amazing shots in the film and some wonderful use of lighting. The location of the Kennywood amusement park was perfect and reminded me of an old run down park I once went to as a kid. The rides look pleasantly unsafe and the games are impossible to win. There is also the constant blasting of “Rock Me Amadeus† through the speakers so that guests can further enjoy their visit at Adventureland. Actually, the music in the film is fantastic. It has an awesomely 80’s soundtrack featuring Lou Reed, David Bowie, INXS, and The Cure to name a few.

I would never want to ruin the end of a movie but I would like to make a comment about this film’s ending. I will keep this spoiler free but you may still want to skip the rest of this paragraph and come back after you have seen the film. It’s OK, you won’t hurt my feelings. Last chance. Ok good. So without giving away too much, I want to say that I was at first a little disappointed with the ending. It wasn’t exactly two characters kissing in the rain and saying they love each other, but at first it did feel like a slightly less generic studio ending. It fit the film and wasn’t too typical but I thought it would end in a more unique manner. Then while thinking about the film, it hit me how great the ending actually is. You see, there is a thing called subtext that Hollywood often does not allow in their films. It basically means that a scene can have layers and different meanings can arise from the multiple levels. When thinking of the characters and what we actually see at the end, I realized there was a certain ambiguity to the conclusion that I really loved. Perhaps I am reading too much into it.

And that’s why I can’t believe she died. Sorry, had to mess with you. There isn’t even a little death at the end of the film. (wink, wink). Everyone needs to know this about the end though, stay during the credits. Towards the end of them there is a very funny commercial for Adventureland that plays.

There is much more that can be said about this film but I’m just going to leave off with this†¦

Adventureland is a perfect 80’s love song for the underpaid and overqualified. It is funny, heartfelt and perfectly awkward. John Hughes, eat your heart out.

‘Adventureland’ [R] opens April 3rd in theaters everywhere.

Tweeting My Way To ‘Adventureland’

Many of you know that most of us here at WAMG are big fans of Twitter(@moviegeeks, @wearemoviegeeks, @cinetrav, @kirk13). For those of you who don’t tweet, you don’t understand how addicting the site is. I started my account (@GetStuck) a little over a month ago just to promote Stuck Like Chuck. I’m now tweeting several times a day talking about a variety of different things. It is a fun way to stay connected and also to meet/socialize with new people. A lot of people have discovered Stuck Like Chuck through Twitter and I’m sure Scott will tell you that a lot of readers discovered WAMG through Twitter as well. Even better, there are a lot of celebrities and movie studios that have embraced Twitter, although it is sometimes hard to tell if the account is real or not. Recently something happened that I am currently labeling My Greatest Twitter Moment.

No, @Jon_Favreau did not respond to my sending him a link to my ‘I Love You, Man’ review…yet. This is better than that anyway. Yesterday, @MiramaxFilms held a Twitter-only screening of Adventureland in NYC. Last week they posted the idea on their official Twitter account and film bloggers who responded to the tweet were sent the full event details. In addition to the screening, there was a very informal reception afterwards with director Greg Mottola (@GregMottola) and actress Margarita Levieva (LISA P). To my knowledge, this is the first time this has ever been done and hopefully more studios follow suit.

I was asked to hold my review of the film till the release but I will tell you that I absolutely loved it. Don’t expect Superbad 2 and you will enjoy the film a lot more. Read my full review on April 3rd to understand why. And while you wait for the release, I highly recommend you pick up a copy of the awesome 80’s soundtrack. I plan to do so very soon. If purchasing on itunes, also download the free exclusive Adventureland Orientation Video starring Martin Starr (@MartinStarr).

So I can’t really tell you much more about the film but I can tell you that the overall experience was incredible. After seeing the movie, we moved into the next room where there was beer, wine, cheese and fruit set up. There were only about 15 bloggers and we all grabbed some refreshments and then sat at one of three tables. A few minutes later, Greg and Margarita were brought in and they moved from table to table “wedding style† spending about 15 minutes with each table. It was completely informal; no tape recorders, cameras or note pads were present. In fact, we barely even talked about the film. Not surprisingly, one of the big topics of conversation was   Twitter. However, here are some of the movie related tidbits I picked up…

  • Margarita helped craft the look of Lisa P. with the cut up Rides t-shirt
  • She also contributed to some of the suggestive dance moves, which she learned from a really bad dance instructor a few years ago at a gym.
  • Greg’s next project, Paul, which stars Nick Frost and Simon Peg, officially got the greenlight this past Friday.
  • Paul will shoot in New Mexico, in June I believe.
  • The alien in Paul will be a mix of CGI and animatronics.
  • It will be amazing!

Ok, so the last tidbit is more of an opinion but a valid one at that. I’m not sure if it was because of the completely informal atmosphere or the fact that I really love Mottola’s work but I was nervous the whole time he sat next to me at the table. I kept telling myself not to say Superbad quotes and not to geek out too much. I didn’t want to steer the conversation in a different direction but I definitely wanted to speak to him about independent film.

When the event was winding down, he was being walked out and I decided I could not blow this opportunity. I popped up and asked if I could talk to him one on one for a minute. Unfortunately when I went to shake his hand someone leaving bumped into me and I accidentally punched his chest. Just kidding. Actually he agreed and we talked for a few minutes. I nervously told him about Stuck Like Chuck, how it was recently accepted into the SINY Film Festival and asked if he had any advice. He basically told me everyone has different career paths and not to pass up good opportunities. Sorry that terrible generalization does not do his advice justice. He also offered a quote from Steven Soderbergh, which is “Talent plus tenacity equals luck.” Then we talked a little more about Stuck Like Chuck and he agreed when I said we should set up an interview sometime soon. He was truly a scholar and a gentleman and it was an honor to get to meet him.

To tie in with this whole Twitter theme, when I got home I sent out a bunch of tweets. I tweeted some of the other bloggers I met (@EDouglasWW, @Da7e), thanked Miramax (@MiramaxFilms) for holding the event and thanked Greg Mottola (@GregMottola) for speaking with me. This morning I checked my Twitter to see this†¦

mottolas-tweet

Greg Mottola tweeted to me. Now, I’ve spoken on the phone, through texts, in email correspondences and face to face with many celebrities but this is my first celebrity tweet. Suck on that  @Jon_Favreau and @jimmyfallon. Just kidding guys.

So in summation of this overly long and fairly pointless blog that probably no one is still reading, I believe  @MiramaxFilms has a great idea and hopefully more studios do Twitter events like this. Or at least start serving food and alcohol before, during or after the movie screening. Oh, and go see Adventureland April 3rd. You won’t be disappointed†¦unless you don’t like good movies.

SXSW Review: ‘Adventureland’

I originally caught this movie at Sundance and with all the hype surrounding it I came out of it a little disappointed, but I think that might have had something to do with the high altitude because I watched this again at SXSW and it rocked my socks off.

The story follows Jesse as he graduates high school and starts gearing up for his post high school trip to Europe in 1987. When his parents drop the bomb on him that they can no longer pay for the trip he is forced to go and find a summer job, but the only thing he is qualified for is working at the local amusement park Adventureland. When he starts at the park he quickly realizes there are 2 types of employees at the park, the Games people and the Rides people which is essentially like two different cliques in high school, the geeks vs the jocks.

Jesse immediately falls for a fellow rides worker in Bella..I mean Emily(Kristen Stewart), who he doesnt know it yet but is totally hung up on the park mechanic/rockstar Mike Connell(Ryan Reynolds). After displaying that he is more than a geek he gets her attention and they start a love affair to spark his otherwise boring summer.

I wont go and ruin the entire plot of the movie but  Greg Mottola really makes you feel nostalgiac with the gritty feel he gives the park, and the throwback 80’s tunes he tosses into the film. If you were born, grew up, or even graduated in the 80’s then you are going to fall in love with this flick. The movie is packed with a star studded cast featuring Bill Hader, Ryan Reynolds, Martin Starr, Jesse Eisenberg, and Kristen Stewart who all play their roles in the movie to perfection.

Overall Rating: 4.5 out of 5

Sundance Review: ‘Adventureland’

Going into Sundance this movie had the biggest buzz of everything and because of that I was a little disappointed. The movie was great, but I am not sure that it is worthy of all the hype. It will make my top movies of Sundance list, but you wont see it in the top, or maybe even top 5.

Based in 1987 the film centers around James Brennan (Jesse Eisenberg), a recent high school graduate who is having a rough go at love, and life after his parents cant afford to pay for his summer abroad. In order to get money for college next year he takes on a summer job, and the only place that will hire him is the local amusement park ‘Adventureland’. After arriving at the park and getting put on game duty by his boss played by the AMAZING Bill Hader, he meets Bella..I mean Emily(Kristen Stewart) and they strike up a very confusing romance.

First I want to ask everyone why the hell Bill Hader doesn’t have any starring movies yet? He completely steals the scenes in this movie, as he has done in so many others (‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’, and ‘Superbad’). He is absolutely hilarious in every scene he has and it still amazes me no one is putting him in a bigger role yet.

The movie is great simply because its based in the 80’s, tosses in some of your favorite 80’s tunes and features a great cast of up and coming indie comedy stars. It was worth seeing, just don’t expect to walk out with a life changing experience.

Overall Rating: 4 out of 5

Sundance 2009: ‘Adventureland’

One of the movies everyone is looking forward to at Sundance this year is ‘Adventureland’ and why not? Its set to be the breakout movie this year. The movie based in the late 80’s and follows the “adventures” of James Brennan. After finding out that his parents cant pay for his trip to Europe, he takes a job at the local amusement park called “Adventureland”. He falls in love at work with Kristen Stewart (who hasn’t?) and has one of the best summers of his life. The movie also stars some of the Judd Apatow alum in Martin Starr and Bill Hader along with Ryan Reynolds!

Miramax has already picked it up, so it will probably see a wide release, but don’t let that stop you from coming out to see it. For those of you not in “the know” here are the screening dates scheduled for it right now:

Mon. Jan 19 6:15 p.m. – ADVNL19CE Eccles Theatre, Park City
Tue. Jan 20 9:15 a.m. – ADVNL20CM Eccles Theatre, Park City
Wed. Jan 21 noon – ADVNL21SD Screening Room, Sundance Resort
Thu. Jan 22 6:30 p.m. – ADVNL22GE Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center, SLC

There aren’t a ton of chances to see it, but make sure you get there early and snag your tickets if you want to see this before everyone else!

‘Adventureland’ Trailer…

Ryan Reynolds is back for another comedy set to rock you. The movie ‘Adventureland’ is set in the summer in the late 80’s. The movie  concerns an uptight recent college grad  who is forced to take a minimum wage job at the local amusement park after realizing he can’t afford his dream European tour. The experience helps him to loosen up a bit as he finds first love, forms new friendships and matures just in time to enter the real world in the fall. This film is set to open worldwide on March 27th.
