MIDWAY (2019) – Review

While the studios generally key lots of releases (mainly horror flicks and thrillers) for the Halloween holiday, the next major one, Veterans’ Day, rarely gets a true-life military battle docudrama. But that’s just what’s “heading ashore” at the multiplex this three day weekend. Following on the heels of 2017’s acclaimed box office hit, DUNKIRK, this new film chronicles an epic World War II battle, this time in the Pacific rather than the Atlantic (and much of Europe). And there’s no “jumping around the timeline” though the new film does begin several years prior. Oh, it should be noted that Hollywood has been there before, way back in 1976 as a showcase for the glorious cinema experience of Sensurround (bet it blew out some of those special speakers). And who’s directed this new take but a man who has orchestrated two different attacks on this planet by invaders from another galaxy. So how does he fare when both forces are from this world, more than 75 years ago, in the current take on the battle of MIDWAY?

The roots of the title encounter begin in Japan circa 1937, at a dinner party attended by strategist Lt. Commander Edwin Layton (Patrick Wilson). During a conversation concerning recent strikes against China, a Japanese officer warns Layton of any attempt by the West to cut off their oil reserves. Flash forward to that first lazy Sunday in 1941 at Pearl Harbor. Flying ace Lt. Dick Best (Ed Skrein), whose wife Anne (Mandy Moore) and their daughter live in a cottage off base, is supervising the start of church services on the deck of one of the carriers. The morning calm is shattered by Japanese bombers dropping out of the clouds to rain death and destruction on the stunned sailors. As we hear FDR’s “day of infamy” speech, Admiral Chester Nimitz (Woody Harrelson) assumes command of the US naval forces. Part of the fleet, the USS Enterprise is helmed by the determined sea vet Vice Admiral ‘Bull’ Halsey (Dennis Quaid) which becomes the launching pad for the April 1942 bombing raid on Tokyo led by Lt. Colonel Jimmy Doolittle (Aaron Eckhart). This helps set the stage for the big showdown against the Japanese fleet in June of 1942, one that could establish dominance in the Pacific Theatre of WWII. Lt. Best must quickly train his young pilots to take on the enemy at the atolls and islands that are known as Midway.

Covering the first year of the US’s entry into the war, the sweeping saga encompasses several real heroes, but the one getting the most screen time may be Skrein’s gung-ho, hotshot flyboy (er..flyman) Best, whose airborne skills match his name. Skrein seems to have stepped right out of the late, late show (the closest to that now is the wee hours of cable’s Turner Classic Movies), peppering his dialogue wit’ lotsa’ dese’, dems’ and dos’, while having an over-confidence and impatience that make Best more than a bit abrasive. But he’s got the love of wife Anne played with adoring gazes by Moore, whose screen time primarily consists of concerned staring into the skies. She does get to “cut a rug’ at a USO dance hall while getting some lusty looks from one of Best’s rivals turned battle partners McClusky played by Luke (Gaston in the live BEAUTY AND THE BEAST) Evans. Nothing comes of this possible romantic triangle subplot since there’s a war to win. Eckhart makes for a dashing Doolittle even as he has to contend with wary Chinese locals after he bails out of his fighter. Wilson takes a break from researching spooks in THE CONJURING series and spin-offs to bring an academic spin (he’s got the apropos eyeglasses) on the battleplans as Layton. Quaid plays Halsey as a glaring, growling old “sea dog”, who is frustrated by his frailties (that #*% rash!), while Harrelson balances gravitas and a subtle sense of humor as the burdened Nimitz. And for the “youngsters” dreamy pop star Nick Jonas gets a break from his brothers as the burly sailor who leaps into action while sporting a swell Clark Gable ‘stache.

Director Roland Emmerich once again proves his knack for big bombastic battles utilizing the latest in CGI effects to make us feel that we’re right on deck as the bombers swarm the skies of Pearl. The same goes when we’re strapped in with the diving pilots as they seem to pull up with just a few feet to spare just as they release their “lethal load’ all while twirling through never-ending streams of artillery fire (looking like yellow glowing gnats). It’s pretty harrowing as the superb editing by Adam Wolfe gives us a “front-row seat” briskly going from the long shots to the commanders to the men twirling about in those cramped cockpits. Unfortunately, the dazzling visuals make the battle interludes rather dull as actors race in and out of rooms, laying out maps, and reciting some awkward exposition. Unlike the ’76 version there’s no turgid “forbidden romance” subplot to slow things to a crawl, but there’s not much in the way of human drama in this first feature film script from Wes Tooke. He does take us behind the closed doors of the enemy, but their restrained in-fighting feels more like political and personal squabbles in an office rather than “empire-makers”. And I’ll give him kudos for the subplot involving one of the titans of cinema. The period costumes, hairstyles, and auto look terrific thanks to the “Norman Rockwell” glow of Robby Baumgartner’s cinematography. And since it’s a period piece, the producers found the right balance in the depiction of tobacco use (in some flicks nobody’s puffing away while in others the smokey haze nearly obscures the actors). MIDWAY uses the newest tech to honor “the greatest generation”, but the writing doesn’t truly bring history to emotional life.

THE DARK KNIGHT Midnights This Weekend at The Tivoli

“You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain.”

In 2008, Christopher Nolan did something no other Batman film director could ever do – he made a darker film than Tim Burton. Burton’s over-the-top, circus-like direction in his two Batman films, while albeit dark, isn’t anywhere near as dark and gritty as THE DARK KNIGHT.

Let’s start with the Joker first off. Heath Ledger outclassed Nicholson in this role (see CHINATOWN at the Tivoli Wednesday night for quintessential Jack). This isn’t the prim and proper Joker that Nicholson displayed – this Joker is a force of nature that plays by absolutely no rules except his own twisted moral code. He cares more about chaos and mayhem more than he would ever care about money or fame. He lives off the fear of the populace. Nicholson’s obsession with the Batman had more to do with him creating the Joker, versus a twisted and depraved fascination with Batman being the symbol of hope for a doomed city. Turning the Joker into a bona fide terrorist fit the post-911 world. Nicholson’s Joker was more preoccupied with settling personal vendettas than being a terrorist, which means that his Joker isn’t near as fascinating.

Likewise, Two-Face in this film, as played by Aaron Eckhart, is more in line with Nicholson’s Joker this time around. His existence in this film is purely about personal vendettas, though he’s largely overshadowed by the Joker. Harvey Dent in the film was a good idea to move Batman’s story along, but Two-Face was not the star attraction of THE DARK KNIGHT.

All the stars here seemed to know what was at stake with THE DARK KNIGHT, so they give it their all. Even with Heath Ledger out of the equation, the performances are fine. Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman really do take advantage of their supporting roles in the film, and use the limited screen time they have to make an impact. Christian Bale did another fine job as the freewheeling playboy as well.Too bad the next and final Nolan Batman, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES (2012) failed to live up to this one.

BLEED FOR THIS – Review

bleed4this

Let’s return to the ring once more for another true life tale of triumph and tragedy all set in the world of the “sweet science”. Almost a year ago movie audiences were cheering on a re-invention of the fiction franchise began by ROCKY with the spin-off CREED. And just a few months ago we watched the rags to riches to rags true tale of Roberto Duran in HANDS OF STONE. Now, or should I say, “…and in this corner”, is the saga of Vinnie Pazienza, a scrappy young fighter from a working class East Coast neighborhood. Ah, but he’s not just fighting other contenders. No, his story mixes the standard sports flick with the “struggling against a devastating medical crisis” drama. It’s a story so incredible that it has to be true (who could make it up?), as Vinnie shows the world that to defy the odds you’ve got to be prepared to BLEED FOR THIS.

The film begins right at the hight of Vinnie Pazienza’s career on the eve of a title bout in Las Vegas circa 1988. Vinnie AKA the “Pazmanian Devil” (Miles Teller) frantically tries to “make-weight” (sweat off the final pounds) as his manager/father Angelo (Ciaran Hinds) and manager/ trainer Lou Duva (Ted Levine) stall at the press conference “weigh in” for the big fight with Roger Mayweather. He barely makes it there before being disqualified. Now anyone else would head back to their suite to rest up for the big bout the next day. Oh no, not Vinnie. After evading his support team, he and his flashy young girlfriend head down to the casino for a full night of drinking and gambling. And somehow he’s victorious a few hours later. After a heated argument over the next big fight, Lou recommends that Vinnie begin raining with Mike Tyson’s former mentor Kevin Rooney (Aaron Eckhart). Rooney battles his own demons (too fond of the “grape”), but he guides Vinnie to defend his title. Then the unthinkable happens. Vinnie and a pal are in a horrific auto accident. He suffers a catastrophic injury, basically a broken neck, and doctors offer him little hope of recovery. He could walk again, but his career is over, or so they say. The healing effort involves outfitting Vinnie with the “halo”, a metal ring literally screwed into his skull that will support his spine. The “Paz” is so frustrated that the frequent visits to local strip clubs provide no pleasure (the same for home visits from the “talent”). Then he discovers the old weight lifting equipment gathering dust in the basement. Hiding from his family and waking up in the pre-dawn hours, he slowly begins to work-out. Eventually he shares his secret with Rooney. As the time for the halo’s removal approaches, Vinnie announces that he will fight again. But if he can climb back into the ring, will anyone want to go up against him and risk putting Vinnie down for the count…forever?

Teller adds another colorful character to his impressive resume with the flamboyant trash-talking bruiser. Vinnie’s a motor-mouthed party animal much of the time, but during the grueling hours of training, Teller shows us a bit of his sadness, that he believes that he deserves the brutal punishment, even as his crew tries to convince him otherwise. After the crash, Teller gives us a much humbler Vinnie, quiet, pensive, finally unsure of his abilities until he endures the ultimate punishment (try not to squirm as the halo is slooowly removed, aarghh!!). With his paunch and bald pate, Eckhart (terrific in the recent SULLY) dives into a rich character role, one far removed from his leading man “square-jawed” leads. His Rooney is a man of few words, but Eckhart lets us in on his smouldering frustrations, perhaps at seeing others reap the rewards of his efforts, seething until the only way to extinguish the fire is with booze. He’s also the nurturing father figure that Vinnie needs, as his own pop, played with loud gusto by Hines, seems to be the conductor of the “Paz” gravy train. But the crash effects him also and Hines shows us a man who realizes that his son is more important than the “flash” and fame. His character is the opposite of his spouse Louise, played with quiet dignity by Katey Sagal in a performance so different from her brassy, bawdy TV roles. She adores her children so much that she banishes herself to a “prayer closet” rather than join her family to watch Vinnie’s televised bouts, her boy’s pain is too much for her.

Director Ben Younger, helming his own screenplay with a story assist from Angelo Pizzo and Pippa Bianco, tells this story with few distracting flourishes and effects, presenting a fairly straight timeline of events and incidents, even giving us title cards (“three months since accident”). He does make some interesting choices with the soundtrack, often taking out the background noise and chatter to let us hear the pounding buzz or the silence happening to Vinnie, whether in the ring or being carting down the hospital hallway. Though his story’s not been told before, much of the film seems too familiar. The family sequences take bits of RAGING BULL and THE FIGHTER, while the training scenes could easily have come from SOUTHPAW and CREED. Speaking of that flick, Vinnie’s bouts have none of the “in your face” energy generated by Ryan Coolger’s innovative in-the-ring camera technique. They’re servicable but not spectacular. And hey, Roberto Duran is a character in two movies this year, as he faces off against Vinnie in the big comeback match. The spine injury subplot gives the film a usnusal twist, but despite the excellent work from Teller and Eckhart, BLEED FOR THIS brings very little to the movie fight game. It scores a few good jabs, but it’s far from a knockout.
