LITTLE – Review

(from left) April Williams (Issa Rae) and little Jordan Sanders (Marsai Martin) in “Little,” co-written and directed by Tina Gordon.

In this weekend’s new comedy, several familiar elements are tossed in the movie blender hoping to come up with a frothy cool entertainment. You’ve heard the old phrase, “Be careful what you wish for”? Well, with this flick it’s “be careful what gets wished on you”. Just two months after a self-absorbed ambitious businesswoman of color got zapped with an unusual ability in WHAT MEN WANT, we’ve got another woman (though much more abrasive) getting a “Twilight Zone-style” upgrade. Well, makeover is more like it. An extreme one for certain. Perhaps in tribute to the passing last year of the multi-talented Penny Marshall, we’re seeing another variation of her greatest directing smash, BIG. Last week it inspired the number one box office hit SHAZAM!, in which a pre-teen lad transforms into an adult super being (but he’s still the kid inside). This time out, an adult woman wakes up as her pre-teen self (no magic word spoken, though). And her grown-up self is still inside a body that’s petite although the title is a “catchier” term, and a “hip flip” on the iconic 1988 comedy-drama: LITTLE.

The story really begins in the early 90s (hmm, SHAZAM! began with an earlier flashback). Over-achieving middle-schooler Jordan Sanders (Marsai Martin) is anxious about presenting her science project at the big class assembly. A “mean girl” sabotages it and JS ends up at the hospital, vowing to become a ruthless adult. Which we witness in the present day as the “grown-up” Jordan (Regina Hall) awakens in her plush penthouse home. She immediately calls up her overworked, abused assistant April (Issa Rae) to berate her and make sure she will have everything in order for her arrival at her software development company (JSI,natch’). Oh, but first Ms. S must dismiss her late night “snack”, the tasty toned Trevor (Luke James), who wants to be more than a “B-call”. After a fast ride in her flashy wheels, Jordan storms into her HQ and is stunned to see multi-millionaire media mogul Connor (Mikey Day) sitting at her desk (with his expensive sneakers propped up on the glass top). He needs to see a pitch for a new app from her and her team within the next 48 hours. After he leaves, the agitated Jordan is irked to see the donut truck guy’s nine-year-old daughter doing magic tricks for the patrons outside the JSI building. When Jordan orders the junior Copperfield to leave, she waves her wand, and points it at the lady, proclaiming, “You are mean. I wish you were little.” The next morning, Jordan is middle school-sized once more (Martin again). When her neighbors call child services, April rushes over to pretend to be her aunt (mom Jordan had to dash out of town) and take her to school. Crisis momentarily averted but the clock is ticking. Can they track down the “magic girl” and get her to reverse the “spell” before Connor’s deadline, otherwise JSI will be history?

This high concept comedy is fueled by an energetic engaging cast lead by screen (big and TV) vet Hall who goes for cartoon demon diva, the polar opposite of her acclaimed (several critics’ group awards) work in last year’s “indie” darling SUPPORT THE GIRLS. Hall is a shrieking sister of Scrooge in the opening sequence bouncing from home to office, terrorizing anyone in her path. Thankfully, by story’s end, she’s not done the whole Ebenezar turn-around, but Hall conveys that she’s on the “path”. Happily, her intensity is matched by the delightful Martin as her “little-self”. It’s through her efforts that we see more of the “mellowing” of Jordan, even learning to care about a trio of “uncool” kids who dream of triumph at the big talent show (JS knows it’s a set-up and works to intervene). But, Martin shows us that the adult JS is still there especially as she tries to put the moves on hunky teacher Mr. Marshall (the befuddled “beefcake” is played with charm, and unease, by Justin Hartley of the TV hit “This is Us”). Martin is quite the formidable force of nature who makes a great screen partner to the gifted Rae (also a TV star on “Insecure”), who can barely contain her joy in getting the “upper hand” on her tyrant boss (best shown in the school parking lot “throw-down”). Equally entertaining are the scenes of Rae’s April “cutting loose” on Jordan’s colossal closet (leopard, baby), her making creative choices (even “pitching”) and her hesitant office romance with the supportive Preston (Tone Bell another TV sitcom vet). Also enhancing the laughs are two “old pros” from the “trenches” of SNL. Day, from the current crew, is superb as the arrogant, clueless Connor, while former “cast member” Rachel Dratch delivers the laughs as “no nonsense” Child Protective Services Agent Bea . She’s (to quote one of her lines) so much more than “Okerrrr”.

Director Tina Gordon’s follow-up to 2013’s PEEPLES hammers the punchlines with confidence, even as the script (co-written by her and Tracy Oliver) sometimes veers off track on subplots with little “pay-off”. This is particularly true of the school sequences with her new trio of pals which includes a tired “makeover” montage and a weird stage performance that may be intended for the lead character to come “full circle”. Instead, it derails the office story momentum, making us question whether the big “deadline” was two days. This contributes to the typical comedy flick “lull” around the one hour mark, not helped by a pointless restaurant karioke contest betweem “little” JS and April (filled to the brim with slapstick as stale as the breadsticks used as microphones). Ditto to the big reveal with Trevor and it’s resolution. Because of the film’s tonal shifts and distracting “B” stories LITTLE comes up short, very short, to the body-switching flicks spawned by the Marshall/Hanks enduring BIG-hearted masterwork.

STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER Teaser Trailer Marks The Return Of The Jedi Knights

Today, Director/Writer J.J. Abrams and Producer Kathleen Kennedy were joined by stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Kelly Marie Tran, Oscar Isaac, Billy Dee Williams, Naomi Ackie, Joonas Suotamo and Anthony Daniels, and droids BB-8 and D-0, for a panel discussion at Star Wars Celebration in Chicago, moderated by Stephen Colbert.

It was a day of surprises at Star Wars Celebration for the enthusiastic fans in attendance as the title of the final installment of the Skywalker saga was also revealed, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and along with the first trailer for the film a brand-new teaser poster.

Where do we start!?!? The trailer is brilliantly cut and is very cool!

The nostalgic sound of “Luke and Leia” theme by John Williams from STAR WARS: RETURN OF THE JEDI puts this first look at the final film over the edge!

Finn (John Boyega), Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) and Rey (Daisy Ridley) in STAR WARS: EPISODE IX.

Emperor Palpatine is back or is he?! And has he been corrupting Kylo Ren this whole time or has Kylo been a good guy all along? It was chilling to see the Death Star in the last scene of the teaser!

Lando is back! The Falcon is Back! Kudos to J.J. Abrams for pulling at the heart-strings of the diehard fans.

Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams) in STAR WARS: EPISODE IX.

Director Rian Johnson’s THE LAST JEDI went against STAR WARS canon and dogma about the Jedi Knights and for some fans (this Geek included), it wasn’t well accepted.

Many disgruntled fans have already spent months arguing that The Last Jedi distorts the Force (Force projection, etc.), but in the behind-the-scenes featurette “Balance the Force,” director Rian Johnson specifically states that he wanted the Force to be viewed as malleable. “The Force is not a superpower,” he says, as reported by GameSpot. “I wanted in this movie to do a little bit of a reset lesson.” After The Force Awakens, many fans thought that Rey’s innate connection to the Force meant she had to be a descendant of Jedi, sparking rumors that Luke Skywalker himself might be her father. However, by widening our understanding of the Force, Johnson also opens up the possibility that neither Rey, nor any other young potential Jedi, has any Jedi blood.

Luke Skywalker: Lesson two. Now that they’re extinct, the Jedi are romanticized, deified. But if your strip away the myth and look at their deeds, the legacy of the Jedi is failure. Hypocrisy, hubris.

Rey: That’s not true!

Luke Skywalker: At the height of their powers, they allowed Darth Sidious to rise, create the Empire, and wipe them out. It was a Jedi Master who was responsible for the training and creation of Darth Vader.

As well as the scene between Yoda and Luke.

Luke Skywalker: [Yoda appears as a ghost] Master Yoda.

Yoda: Young Skywalker.

Luke Skywalker: I’m ending all of this. The tree, the texts, the Jedi. I’m going to burn it all down.

Yoda: [Yoda summons lightning to burn down the tree and the Jedi texts. He laughs] Ah, Skywalker. Missed you, have I.

Luke Skywalker: So it is time for the Jedi Order to end.

Yoda: Time it is for you to look past a pile of old books, hmm?

Luke Skywalker: The sacred Jedi texts?

Yoda: Oh, read them, have you? Page-turners they were not. Yes, yes, yes. Wisdom they held, but that library contained nothing that the girl Rey does not already possess. Skywalker, still looking to the horizon. Never here, now, hmm? The need in front of your nose.

Luke Skywalker: I was weak. Unwise.

Yoda: Lost Ben Solo you did. Lose Rey we must not.

Luke Skywalker: I can’t be what she needs me to be.

Yoda: Heeded my words not, did you? Pass on what you have learned. Strength. Mastery. But weakness, folly, failure also. Yes, failure most of all. The greatest teacher, failure is. Luke, we are what they grow beyond. That is the true burden of all masters.

Are generations of Skywalkers and Jedis embodied in Rey? Will the saga conclude with her finally bringing true balance to the Force? I sure hope so because after STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI made us think the Jedi were a buncha selfish asshats, with Yoda and Luke’s conversations, along with them burning the books, tree and temple to the ground, the true Rise of The Skywalkers will be the redemption of the Jedi Knights who were, as Obi-Wan Kenobi said in A NEW HOPE, “For over a thousand generations, the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic. Before the dark times… before the Empire.”

A Facebook invite for these two screenings can be found HERE

It is a shame that Jackie Chan’s eventual emergence as a fully -fledged Hollywood star did not happen much earlier when he was at his physical peak. Of course even now at age 65 he is pretty amazing, but the Jackie Chan of POLICE STORY and POLICE STORY 2 would have really amazed the world.

POLICE STORY – In the movie that made him an international star, Jackie Chan plays policeman Ka-kui in the newly-restored Police Story. Ka-kui finds the need to go rogue to protect a star witness (Brigitte Lin, Chungking Express) against the retribution of a local drug lord. All of this is a vehicle for Chan to engage in some of the most memorable cinematic stunts this side of Buster Keaton—haven’t you ever seen a man hang from an umbrella hooked to the side of a moving bus before? In Cantonese with English subtitles.

POLICE STORY 2 – After the events of the first Police Story, Jackie Chan’s Ka-kui has been demoted to a traffic cop and finds himself with a need to win back his girlfriend May (Maggie Cheung, In the Mood for Love). He finds a path to redemption in his pursuit of a group of extortionist bombers, which of course again results in Chan putting life and limb on the line for our collective amusement. In Cantonese with English subtitles.

MISSING LINK – Review

MISSING LINK is an enjoyable effort from the folks at Laika studios with irresistible stop-motion look, an outstanding voice cast and the signature cheekily innocent wit that have become their hallmarks. It may not be Laika’s best, but it’s still highly recommended.

MISSING LINK opens with a hilarious sequence where our fearless explorer hero Sir Lionel Frost (Hugh Jackman) fails to prove the existence of the Loch Ness monster due to a broken camera. He soon receives a mysterious telegram which sends him to the Pacific Northwest in search of the legendary “missing link” (aka Bigfoot aka Sasquatch) that connects modern man to the apes. Frost hopes that this discovery means he’ll earn membership in the Optimates Club, an exclusive society reserved for the best adventurers and explorers. Turns out the telegram is from Mr. Link himself (Zack Galifinakis) and what he really wants is for Sir Frost to assist him on a journey to find his long-lost relatives he’s convinced reside in the fabled valley of Shangri-La. Mr. Link (who prefers to be called Susan) is 8 feet tall, 630 lbs, and covered in fur but he is funny, sweet, making him the world’s most lovable legend. Along with adventurer Adelina Fortnight (Zoe Saldana), our brave trio of explorers encounter more than their fair share of peril as they travel to the far reaches of the world to help their furry friend, but Optimates anti-evolution chief Lord Piggot-Dunceb (Stephen Fry) has hired hit man Stank (Timothy Olyphant) to stop them.

Laika Studio does their best to keep the magic of stop motion animation alive, and here they have once again fabricated an imaginative and colorful world, though one less spooky or dream-like than in their previous films BOXTROLLS and KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS.  It also lacks the depth of those earlier films. This is the first film from the studio that does not have a child character at the center of it. Instead, it has a comic actor – that man-child Zack Galifinakis, who does have some funny lines, especially the charmingly literal way he responds to Sir Frost’s figures of speech. Jackman’s portrayal of Sir Lionel Frost is a humorous enough blend of Sherlock Holmes and Indiana Jones and he and Galifinakis have playful chemistry, but the simple plot mechanics and often tired jokes could have benefited from some rewriting. Still, MISING LINK is silly, colorful, and a fun enough way to pass 95 minutes.
