WAMG Tribute: José Mojica Marins, ‘Coffin Joe’, Has Died

” Oh, and one last favor. If you pass by heaven, give my regards to the angels. But if you end up in hell, give my address to the devil. ” – Coffin Joe in THIS NIGHT I WILL POSSESS YOUR CORPSE

Brazilian horror star and international cult icon José Mojica Marins has died at age 83. RIP Coffin Joe.

Unholy undertaker, evil philosopher, denizen of dreams and hallucinations, Coffin Joe, with his trademark top hat, black cape, and long talon-like fingernails is a horror icon in his native Brazil. Revered as a national boogeyman, Coffin Joe has been immortalized in films, TV shows, radio programs, and comic books. He was the creation of writer-director-star Jose Mojica Marins, whose perversely original and strangely personal filmmaking style has been compared to an unholy blend of Mario Bava, Luis Bunuel, and Russ Meyer.

Jose Mojica Marins took Brazil by storm with the 1963 release of AT MIDNIGHT I’LL TAKE YOUR SOUL where he played Coffin Joe, a sadistic undertaker who despises religion and emotion and is concerned only with finding his idea of the “perfect” woman to continue his superior bloodline. It was the first entry in what would soon become known as the delirious, nightmarish Coffin Joe franchise. That film, as well as the subsequent Marins shockers such as THIS NIGHT I WILL POSSESS YOUR CORPSE (1967), THE STRANGE HOSTEL OF NAKED PLEASURES (1976), HALLUCINATIONS OF A DERANGED MIND (1978) and AWAKENING OF THE BEAST (1983) were not exported to the United States when they were new. These are some of the most bizarre and extreme films in horror history and it would take several decades for American cult movie fans, after suffering through 5th generation bootleg VHS tapes, to finally see good copies of the Coffin Joe series. Jose Mojica Marins has a loyal, global following but was still not very well known outside his native Brazil. RIP to a horror original .

WHAT LOVE LOOKS LIKE – Review

Review by Stephen Tronicek

Alex Magaña’s What Love Looks Like looks like an ambitious project that doesn’t quite come together. Consisting of five stories of love in L.A., the film tasks itself with exploring the thematic territory of what causes us to fall in love, what causes us to get over it and the grey area in between.

That’s a difficult task. The writer of modern romantic comedies, Richard Curtis tried to pull it off in Love Actually and (through these subjective eyes) failed miserably. That Magaña and his team pull at least one or two halfway decent stories out of it is impressive. The best of these five stories is a liar revealed story between Calvin (Connor Wilkins) and Summer (Jamie Shelnitz). After a one night stand, Calvin plays the jerk and the pair leave each other’s lives…until an app brings them back together. While there’s a bit of contrivance in the rules of the app, the story is charming enough, with Wilkins and Shelnitz turning in the best performances of the film.

However, this charming feeling is missing from a few of the stories. There’s a meet-cute storyline between Nicole (Kate Durocher) and Jace (Trevor Sean) that feels antiquated and maybe a little creepy, even if the actors give it their all. The same goes for a few of the other stories which seem tacked on to keep the runtime up, even if they don’t add anything important to the film’s thesis.

What Love Looks Like is a bit of a mixed bag. When it works, it provides an entertaining, if a bit trite, balm of melodrama. When it doesn’t, it simply plays like something we’ve seen before.

1933’s KING KONG Roars Back to Movie Theaters Nationwide March 15th

” Don’t be alarmed, ladies and gentlemen. Those chains are made of chrome steel.”

Though it’s a genuine icon of American cinema, and one of the most instantly recognizable creations ever put on screen, 1933’s King Kong has not had a nationwide theatrical re-release in 64 years. That changes on Sunday, March 15, when Fathom Events unleashes “Kong, the Eighth Wonder of the World,” on more than 600 movie screens nationwide as part of the yearlong TCM Big Screen Classics series.

Last given a big-screen re-release in 1956 – when Dwight D. Eisenhower was president, the average movie ticket cost 59 cents, and not a single manmade item was orbiting the earth – the original theatrical version of King Kong is back to dazzle the digital era with it’s all-analog marvels. Adding to this rare cinematic event, TCM Primetime Host Ben Mankiewicz will offer all-new insight and commentary on one of the most well-known, influential (and still thrilling) films of all time.

The dazzling adventure features groundbreaking stop-motion animation by Willis O’Brien – visual effects that remain astonishing even in spite of the computer-generated advances made since the original release of King Kong nearly 90 years ago. The film stars Fay Wray, Robert Armstrong, Bruce Cabot, and features a lush score by legendary composer Max Steiner. Though it’s been remade twice and has inspired countless movies,TV shows and characters, the 1933 original still holds a power that film critic Roger Ebert called “ageless and primeval.”

  • Presented by Fathom Events, Turner Classic Movies and Warner Bros.
  • Sunday, March 15, 2020 – 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. (local time)
  • Tickets for King Kong can be purchased at www.FathomEvents.com or participating theater box offices. Fans throughout the U.S. will be able to enjoy the event in more than 600 select movie theaters through Fathom’s Digital Broadcast Network (DBN). For a complete list of theater locations visit the Fathom Events website (theaters and participants are subject to change).

WHAT SHE SAID: THE ART OF PAULINE KAEL Screens at Webster University February 21st-23rd

WHAT SHE SAID: THE ART OF PAULINE KAEL screens at Webster University ‘s Moor Auditorium (470 E Lockwood Ave) screens Friday February 21st, Saturday February 22nd, and Sunday February 23rd. The film begins each evening at at 7:00pm. A Facebook event can be found HERE

Regarded by Roger Ebert as having “a more positive influence on the climate for film in America than any other single person over the last three decades,” film critic Pauline Kael reigned, from the late 60s to the early 90s, as one of the most well-known, clever, and controversial figures in the industry. Having been one of the few female critics in a sea of men, unapologetic about her (often scathing) opinions, and underpaid for the influential work she did, Kael fought endlessly to preserve her title.

Pauline Kael, the New Yorker film critic for 25 years until the early 1990s, was a lightning rod of American culture. She waged a battle to be recognized and her opinions made her readers hate or love her. Her distinctive voice pioneered the art form, and was largely a result of stubborn determination, huge confidence, and a deep love of the arts. The movie also shows 20th-century movies through Pauline’s eye, and shows Pauline’s own life through moments of other movies. The filmmakers had complete access to the subject — through Gina James, Pauline’s only child and the executor of her estate; friends and colleagues; and Pauline’s personal archives. With over 30 new interviews, including David O. Russell, Quentin Tarantino, Camille Paglia, Molly Haskell, Alec Baldwin Greil Marcus, Paul Schrader, John Guare and Joe Morgenstern. Sarah Jessica Parker voices Pauline through her writing and letters.

Admission is:

$7 for the general public
$6 for seniors, Webster alumni and students from other schools
$5 for Webster University staff and faculty

Free for Webster students with proper I.D.

DOWNHILL – Review

Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Will Ferrell star as a married couple who have their relationship shaken after near-miss with an avalanche while on a family ski vacation, in the dark comedy/drama DOWNHILL. Nat Faxon and Jim Rash co-direct this American re-make of 2014 FORCE MAJEURE, Swedish director Ruben Ostlund’s biting comedy about how a man’s reaction to danger undermines his relationship with his wife and children. The term “force majeure” means an irresistible compulsion, like the man’s self-preservation response.

Ruben Ostlund’s dark comedy was sharply funny as well as thought-provoking. Like most English-language re-makes of international hits, DOWNHILL is a paler version. Still, DOWNHILL has its moments, comic and otherwise, largely thanks to the fine work of Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Will Ferrell. Their comic chemistry and separate work are the major reasons to see this film.

Americans Pete (Will Ferrell), a real estate dealer, and his lawyer wife Billie (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and their two teen-aged sons are on a long-awaited ski vacation at a luxury Austrian resort. That things might go a bit wrong are foreshadowed by the fact that they do not see any other children at the adult-focused resort, unlike the family-oriented one down the road. A strange, intrusive, and sexy hotel employee (Miranda Otto) adds to the slight unease yet the family quickly settles in and get out on the slopes.

But the happy family is unsettled by an incident that happens shortly after they sit down for lunch at an outside restaurant. A controlled avalanche comes shockingly close, sending the customers fleeing in fear of their lives. Although they are only dusted lightly with snow instead of buried under it, the result is devastating for the family as Billie discovers her husband bolted, leaving her to shelter their children on her own. To make matters worst, Pete acts like nothing happened, failing even to acknowledge what he just did.

While DOWNHILL follows the general plot outline of the original film, there are significant differences in both story and tone. The kids in the original are younger, a girl and a boy, while in the remake they are a pair of teen-aged boys, Finn (Julian Grey) and Emerson (Ammon Ford), who are happier with screen-time than skiing with the parents, which shifts the family dynamic. Rather than sharply focusing on the questions raised about his fundamental nature and his relationships with his wife and children, DOWNHILL dilutes that focus with other topics, such as mid-life crisis and grieving for a recent loss of his father. The second couple who are good friends in the original become a younger work acquaintance (played by Zach Woods) and his free-spirited new girlfriend (Zoe Chao), who are a less-welcome intrusion on the family vacation. Kristofer Hivju, the bearded redhead that audiences may recognize from “Game of Thrones,” played the friend in the original and appears briefly in DOWNHILL as a man in charge of avalanche-control for the ski resort, in one of the funnier scenes.

Watching DOWNHILL without seeing the original film might make one wonder why someone would re-make this story, as it seems much like any number of mildly entertaining family dramedies. However, those who did see FORCE MAJEURE will be left disappointed, as this re-make falls far short despite the determined efforts of the cast to add a little spark.
