Christopher Nolan’s TENET IMAX Opens With $5 Million International Debut

IMAX today announced that Warner Bros. Pictures and Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” surged to a better-than-expected start in IMAX, with an estimated $5 million in international box office from only 248 theaters worldwide.

IMAX theatres generated a per screen average of approximately $20K — about 7.5 times the estimated overall per screen average — even with an average 50% seating capacity limitation throughout the world. IMAX also delivered 9.4% of overall box office despite accounting for less than 1% of total screens. “Tenet” opened in IMAX across all 38 available markets worldwide and continues its global rollout this week with at least 900 additional IMAX theatres across the United States, China and Russia.

“The strong international debut of Christopher Nolan’s ‘Tenet’ is an emphatic statement that audiences around the world are ready to return to theatres where it is safe,” said Rich Gelfond, CEO of IMAX. “It is clear that people want to experience immersive entertainment like ‘Tenet’ in a communal, celebratory way beyond their living rooms, and this film is a jumpstart for the theatrical business with an exciting film slate ahead.”

IMAX reported hundreds of sold-out shows across all markets and many of the company’s flagship locations were sold out all weekend, including the BFI in London, Krung Sri Paragon in Bangkok, CGV’s Yongsan in Seoul, Filmstaden Mall of Scandinavia in Stockholm, Cinemaxx in Copenhagen, VOX Red Sea Mall in Jeddah, Miramar in Taipei, and Toronto’s Cinesphere at Ontario Place.

Per screen averages reached pre-COVID blockbuster levels in many key markets, including Denmark ($73K), Norway ($64K), Saudi Arabia ($55K), Finland ($42K) and Sweden ($38K, despite a 50-person capacity limitation per show).

Filmed using IMAX cameras, “Tenet” continues the successful collaboration between filmmaker Christopher Nolan and IMAX. IMAX’s 9.4% share of box office was comparable to international opening weekend’s for Nolan’s most recent films, “Dunkirk” (12.6%) and “Interstellar” (9.6%).

In fact, “Tenet” had a bigger opening than “Dunkirk” in 11 markets worldwide, and bigger than both “Dunkirk” and “Interstellar” in in key markets including France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Turkey, Taiwan and Malaysia. ‘Tenet’ will play for an extended run of at least three weeks in IMAX in most markets.

UK and Canada

The UK was the top grossing IMAX market this weekend for “Tenet,” earning $900K — the second highest August opening weekend ever for IMAX in the UK behind 2016’s “Suicide Squad.”  Even with a 50% capacity limitation, the IMAX gross trailed the UK opening weekend of “Interstellar” by only 25%. Even Canada — which limited seating capacity to just 50 people per show — delivered an impressive $10K per screen average.

“‘Tenet’ is a reminder of the enduring power of the theatrical experience, and audiences worldwide turned out for the film in a big way,” continued Gelfond. “The performance of ‘Tenet’ in the UK and Canada despite significant capacity limitations is a positive sign for the film’s performance in the U.S., given the way these markets often align at the box office.”

John David Washington is the new Protagonist in Christopher Nolan’s original sci-fi action spectacle “Tenet.” Armed with only one word—Tenet—and fighting for the survival of the entire world, the Protagonist journeys through a twilight world of international espionage on a mission that will unfold in something beyond real time. Not time travel. Inversion.

“Tenet” is the latest of Nolan’s trailblazing films also shot with IMAX cameras including “Dunkirk,” “Interstellar,” “The Dark Knight” and “The Dark Knight Rises.”

Nolan designed “Tenet” with IMAX in mind – capturing the film with IMAX cameras, among the highest-resolution cameras in the world, and also refining the film throughout post-production in an IMAX theatre to further optimize how audiences will experience the film in IMAX. Exclusively in IMAX theatres, sequences shot with IMAX cameras will visually expand to fill the entire screen, allowing moviegoers to experience more of the image with unprecedented crispness and clarity. That combined with next generation IMAX precision sound, creates a truly immersive experience.

Select IMAX theatres will be offering The IMAX Experience® featuring 15 perf/70mm film projection which combines the brightest, clearest images at almost 10 times the resolution of standard film projection, with powerful, laser-aligned digital sound and customized theatre geometry to create the world’s most immersive movie experience.

Check Out the Shocking Trailer For TEN MINUTES TO MIDNIGHT Starring Caroline Williams

TEN MINUTES TO MIDNIGHT, a vampire flick for the #MeToo era, will hit theaters on September 17th (including drive-ins), Virtual Cinema on October 15 and traditional VOD/Digital on January 19, 2021 from 1091 Pictures.

Check out the trailer:

In Ten Minutes to Midnight, Caroline Williams returns to the DJ booth for the first time since her star-making turn as Stretch in 1986’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. Williams plays Amy Marlowe, a veteran late night radio host on the eve of forced retirement trapped inside the station by a violent storm after being bitten by a rabid bat.  The film draws inspiration from classic horror tales brought to life by Stephen King, The Twilight Zone, and other forgotten late night horror anthology programs.

Erik Bloomquist (Long Lost) directed from a screenplay co-written with Carson Bloomquist. Adam Weppler, who also appears in the film, produced with the brothers for Mainframe Pictures. The film also stars Nicole Kang (Batwoman), Alice Kremelberg (Orange is the New Black), and late genre-favorite Nicholas Tucci (You’re Next) in one of his final performances.

“The team is so enthused to have found a home with 1091 Pictures,” said the Bloomquists. “Ten Minutes to Midnight is our take on phantasmagoric chamber cinema. A movie with bombastic genre flourishes that also meditates on the kaleidoscopic nature of time. 1091’s eclectic and thoughtful filmography is welcome company, and we’re excited to be guided by their contemporary filmmaker-forward distribution principles.

International Trailer Hits For Viggo Mortensen’s Directorial Debut FALLING Starring Viggo Mortensen, Lance Henriksen And Laura Linney

Academy Award and BAFTA nominee actor Viggo Mortensen explores the fractures and contrasts that make up a modern family in his directorial debut, FALLING, an intimate drama about a son’s relationship with his ageing father.

The family drama, which closed the Sundance Festival and is one of those selected for the official Cannes 2020 festival selection, will have its European premiere at the 68th edition of the San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain. Viggo Mortensen will receive a Donostia Award in recognition of his career. FALLING will have its Canadian premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 11. https://tiff.net/events/falling

John Petersen (Mortensen) lives with his partner Eric (Chan) and their adopted daughter Monica in Southern California. His father Willis (Henriksen/Gudnason) is a farmer whose attitudes and behaviour belong to a far more traditional era and family model. When Willis travels to Los Angeles for an indefinite stay with John’s family in order to search for a place to retire, these two very different worlds collide.

Willis’ behaviour can be both caustic and funny – with outbursts that shock his liberal family. This endears him to grand-daughter Monica, but it almost proves too much for John, and his sister Sarah (Linney), bringing old wounds back to the surface and creating new ones along the way. With Willis’ memory in rapid decline, his thoughts turn back to his first wife Gwen (Gross), a love that still consumes him a lifetime later. As father and son confront the events that have torn them apart, we see the gamut of their relationship over 40 years, and their differing recollections of John’s mother, Gwen: from dark to light, from rage and jealousy through to acceptance, laughter, and hard-won grace.

DESERT ONE – Review

So, who’s up for a movie history lesson? No, not about the history of cinema, but rather a look back at a time that often feels not that long ago, but with others, it may be “olden days”. Now don’t groan and whine about “homework” because this is a compelling look at an incident that was shrouded in mystery at its time. Plus the folks involved, from both sides of this conflict, are talking to one of our most celebrated and honored documentarians. You might recall a fleeting mention of this event in 2012’s Best Picture Oscar winner ARGO. Now with many articles declassified, we can learn the facts behind this mission from just over 40 years ago. Some called it Operation Eagle Claw, others dubbed it Operation Tabas, but it all rested on the spot in the sand, the landing and refueling site known as DESERT ONE.

Using newsreel and archival footage we got a brief backstory as the film begins. In 1953 Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, known by most as the Shah, took over Iran with the rumored help of United States undercover forces (particularly the CIA). Each new US president maintained close ties to the Shah despite reports of the brutality of his regime (mass graves of executed citizens). Finally, in 1979 he was overthrown by the Iranian Revolution led by religious leader Ayatollah Khomeini. The Shah fled to Egypt, and soon flew to the US for cancer treatment. Things came to a boiling point when the Muslim Student Followers of the Imam’s Line stormed the US embassy in Tehran taking fifty-two American citizens hostage on November 4, 1979. Their main demand was that the Shah be returned there to stand trial. Then-President James Carter attempted to end the stalemate through negotiations, but the occupying group, who had the full support of Khomeini, would not budge. As the week dragged into months, Carter was under pressure, particularly from the GOP nominee Ronald Reagan, to use military force to rescue the hostages. But the president was adamant about bringing them home alive and well. As the country seethed with frustration, Carter was secretly working with members of the Delta Force on a rescue plan, Operation Eagle Claw. They would drop in from the nearby stationed USS Nimitz via several RH53D helicopters along with C-130 transport aircraft for refueling. In the late afternoon of April 24, 1980, they initiated the mission. But things were not going there way almost from the start. Two of the eight choppers broke down, dust storms hindered their vision, and several vehicles, including a tourist-filled bus, suddenly appeared. But when the plans were scrapped, one of the copters, crashed into a C-130 causing a massive fire that claimed the lives of eight soldiers. The remainder quickly flew back to the Nimitz, leaving the bodies behind. When the wreckage was found near Tabas, Iranians celebrated as Carter accepted the blame for the failed mission on a televised address. He lost the election, and on the day of Reagan’s inauguration, Iran put the hostages on a plane bound for the US base in Germany before heading back to the states. After 444 days they were going home.

And just who is the award-winning filmmaker behind this? It’s two-time Oscar winner Barbara Koppel, who’s been making documentaries for the big and small screen for 44 years. She’s at the top of her game with this fascinating look at a real defining time for the late 20th century, especially in the area of foreign diplomacy. As mentioned there are many sequences culled from archival footage, from old newsreels to network video, but Kopple delves much deeper with some incredible new interviews. We talk to Iranians who were part of the siege (then, their biggest prime-time TV show was a program instructing viewers about using automatic weapons against a possible US invasion), some of the hostages (including Sgt. Kevin Hermening whose mother was allowed to visit him at the embassy), many of the special ops officers, and even President Carter and Vice-President Walter Mondale. And the newsman most associated with the crisis, Ted Koppel, whose weeknight updates became the still ongoing late evening news magazine “Nightline”. Plus there are clips of his contemporaries who signed off their newscasts with countdown/reminders (this is day 97). Of course, this fanned the flames of frustration which Reagan used to his advantage in many snippets. Carter was perceived as weak because he would not go in guns blazing, fatalities be damned. It’s evident that this part of his presidency still haunts him along with those would-be rescuers left behind (the Red Cross eventually brought the bodies home for burial). One of the film’s greatest assets is the release of the actual recorded phone calls between the Oval offices and the officers in communication with the Delta team (“Hold for the President…go ahead”). You can hear the tension in those audio pieces. But the most powerful scenes are those that visualize that fateful April night. Over the interviews of the soldiers, Kopple uses a form of limited animation (in advertising these were dubbed “animatics” which helped show a client what a finished TV spot would play), that feels like a gritty graphic novel brought to life. Figures move with camera pans, while motion is simulated via quick dissolves, as the audio effects drive home the chaos and carnage. This technique is also utilized as several hostages talk about the late-night “phony executions” which debunks the Iranians’ tales of “great treatment”. But the real “gut puncher” footage may be the footage of the Iranians putting the charred corpses on display for their TV news, leading to celebrations saying that God stepped in to stop the “evildoers”. After four decades it still stings as those there that night still see their fallen comrades screaming in agony as they close their eyes to fitful rest. And now the old copters are part of a playground, with tots climb down the blades. What stays longest may be the message one of the US team got from a British soldier, who scribbled on ragged cardboard that he still carries, “…thanks for trying”. DESERT ONE echoes this sentiment as one of this year’s best documentary features, informative and very moving.
