Deaf Crocodile Announces New Acquisitions As Part Of Their ‘RUSSIAN FANTASTIKA’ Restoration Collection — THE SWORD AND THE DRAGON, THE DAY THE EARTH FROZE and ZERO CITY

“Resistance is useless! I will make you bow to our mighty chief Kalin.”

Deaf Crocodile’s RUSSIAN FANTASTIKA collection Includes the 4K Restorations Of Aleksandr Ptushko Fantasy Films “ILYA MUROMETS (THE SWORD & THE DRAGON)” (1956) and “SAMPO (THE DAY THE EARTH FROZE)” (1959), and 2K Restoration Of Karen Shakhnazarov’s Satire “ZEROGRAD (ZERO CITY)” (1988)

Deaf Crocodile, in association with distribution partner Seagull Films, announced today the acquisition of a trio of celebrated Russian titles.  The companies will jointly release 4K restorations of famed Russian fantasy filmmaker Aleksandr Ptushko’s stunning 1956 medieval epic ILYA MUROMETS (THE SWORD & THE DRAGON), and his mystical 1959 Finnish/Soviet co-production SAMPO (THE DAY THE EARTH FROZE), as well as a 2K restoration of director Karen Shakhnazarov’s 1988 Kafkaesque satire ZEROGRAD (ZERO CITY). ILYA MUROMETS and ZEROGRAD will be released in collaboration with legendary Russian studio Mosfilm, which restored them recently.  SAMPO has been restored by KAVI – the Finnish National Audiovisual Institute.  All three films will be released in summer 2022 theatrically, digitally, and on home video as part of an ongoing “Russian Fantastika” collection, working with Deaf Crocodile’s partner Grasshopper Films for digital release and OCN / Vinegar Syndrome for Blu-ray release.

ZEROGRAD director Karen Shakhnazarov, who has served as Director General of Mosfilm since 1998, comments, “For us today restoration is more of a cultural action than a commercial matter. But I think that it is very important that the masterpieces of world cinema, the classics, are now in good quality – this in itself is very important for the preservation of this heritage.”

Legendary Russian fantasy filmmaker Aleksandr Ptushko’s sweeping, visual FX-filled epic ILYA MUROMETS (THE SWORD & THE DRAGON) is one of his most enchanting achievements: a stunning CinemaScope ballad of heroic medieval knights, ruthless Tugar invaders, wind demons, and three-headed fire-breathing dragons, all set against a mythic landscape of pastoral, unspoiled Russia. Based on one of the most famous byliny (oral epics) in Old Russian culture, the film stars Boris Andreyev as the bogatyr (warrior) Ilya, waging a decades-long battle against the Tugars who threaten his homeland, kidnap his wife, and raise his own son to fight against him. Director Ptushko began his career in the 1930s and went on to become a combination of Walt Disney, Ray Harryhausen, and Mario Bava for his dazzling, bejeweled fantasies including THE STONE FLOWER, SADKO, SAMPO, and RUSLAN & LUDMILA. The first CinemaScope film produced in the Soviet Union, ILYA MUROMETS was released in a truncated, dubbed version in the U.S. as THE SWORD & THE DRAGON, that heavily downplayed the epic poetry and lyricism of the original. This will be the first-ever official U.S. release of the original full-length version of ILYA MUROMETS.  (In Russian with English subtitles.)

Watch the trailer for ILYA MUROMETS 4K restoration HERE:

SAMPO (THE DAY THE EARTH FROZE), 1959, Finland/USSR, 91 min. Based on the Finnish national epic “Kalevala,” director Aleksandr Ptushko’s ravishing, mystical fantasy tells the story of a sinister witch Louhi (Anna Orochko) who covets the Sampo, a magical, rainbow-colored mill that can produce endless salt, grain, and gold. When the hero Lemminkäinen (Andris Oshin) attempts to stop her, Louhi steals the sun, plunging the world into eternal darkness. A Finnish/Soviet co-production and shot like its predecessor ILYA MUROMETS in gorgeous CinemaScope, SAMPO features some of Ptushko’s most surreal and fantastical imagery: a glowing red horse plowing a field of vipers; a boat of fire with a stag’s head; a weeping mother literally walking across the sea to find her lost son. With its witch’s incantations and repeated scenes of forging magical items – “Give me fire for the furnace from the nave of the sky!” – there is a Macbeth-like occult force to the film as well, underscored by the raging blue-gray seas and rock-strewn landscapes. Previously released in the U.S. in a dubbed, butchered version as THE DAY THE EARTH FROZE (and later mocked on MST3K), SAMPO has been beautifully restored in 4K by KAVI – the Finnish National Audiovisual Institute for its first-ever American release in its original Finnish-language version by Deaf Crocodile.  (In Finnish with English subtitles.)

Part Kafka, part Agatha Christie, and part Monty Python, director Karen Shakhnazarov’s surreal 1988 satire of Communism ZEROGRAD (ZERO CITY) follows an Everyman engineer named Varakin (Leonid Filatov) who arrives in a remote city where nothing quite makes sense— but everyone acts as if it does. He’s quickly drawn into the investigation of the suicide (or possibly murder?) of a local restaurant chef, Nikolaev, who may (or may not) be Varakin’s missing father. The more complex and absurdist the mystery becomes, the more poignant and plaintive Varakin’s predicament. Along the way we’re treated to a bizarre and wonderful sideshow of non sequiturs that seem as if out of a Wes Anderson film, including an underground museum filled with a thousand years of real and imagined Russian history  Frozen in time, frozen far beneath the surface, the waxwork figures are strangely beautiful and forlorn, like Shakhnazarov’s marvelous and enigmatic satire of Soviet bureaucracy. With music by the great Eduard Artemyev (SOLARIS, STALKER). (In Russian with English subtitles.)

“In my opinion, the essence of the film ZERO CITY is that a person mythologizes history, distorts it,” observes the film’s director, Karen Shakhnazarov.  “And, constantly distorting history, he distorts his own life. In essence, we do not know history – it is, in principle, unknowable for us. We constantly use the past to achieve some goals in our modern life. But in this way, by distorting our past, we also distort our present. This concerns not only the USSR and not only Russia. This also applies to the United States, and France, and China, and Brazil, and in general everyone. This is common. For me, this topic is related to the very existence of man. This is the main theme of ZERO CITY for me.”

“Russia has such a rich tradition of fantasy filmmaking, and these are absolute treasures,” says Deaf Crocodile Co-Founder and Head of Acquisitions & Distribution Dennis Bartok. “I worked in the early 2000s with Alla Verlotsky of Seagull Films on bringing Ptushko’s magical films and other Russian Fantastika titles to U.S. audiences through touring retrospectives we organized. Now, working again with her and her partner Victoria Belopolsky in Moscow, we’re thrilled to be introducing the original full-length ILYA MUROMETS and SAMPO and Shakhnazarov’s wicked, surreal ZEROGRAD to audiences here, with much more to come.”

Craig Rogers, Deaf Crocodile’s co-founder and Head of Post-Production and Restoration, continued on the acquisition and release news, “Ray Harryhausen fans are going to be blown away by the imagery and real fire breathing dragon in ILYA MUROMETS and the stunning poetry and visual F/X in SAMPO.  ZEROGRAD comes from the same D.N.A. as Terry Gilliam’s BRAZIL. Surreal, wild fun. I’m so glad these films will finally be seen by a North American audience!”

“Soviet cinema is an indisputable treasure trove of gems, many of which are rarely known to American audiences,”  added Seagull Films’ Founder & President, Alla Verlotsky, on the titles. “Seagull Films’s and Deaf Crocodile’s commitment to making world cinema’s unknown masterpieces restored and widely available is an act of not only cinematic but cultural preservation.”

“Russian Fantastika” is a broad and fascinating mix of genres that encompass folktale films (film-skazka), science fiction movies (nauchno-fantastichesky film) and horror (film uzhasov), according to the late Russian film scholar Alan Upchurch.  Deaf Crocodile and Seagull Films will be announcing additional “Russian Fantastika” titles in the near future.

Errol Flynn and Ann Sheridan in EDGE OF DARKNESS Available on Blu-ray February 22nd From Warner Archive

“These Facists will never drive Norwegians out of Norway!”

Errol Flynn and Ann Sheridan in EDGE OF DARKNESS (1943) will be available on Blu-ray February 22nd from Warner Archive. It can be purchased at the Warner Archive Amazon Store HERE

In 1930, director Lewis Milestone won an Academy Award®* for his eloquent anti-war masterpiece, All Quiet on the Western Front. But with Edge of Darkness, made in 1943 during the dark days of the German blitzkrieg, Milestone displays no such pacifist sentiments. Indeed, this remarkable drama, set in a small Norwegian village, pays tribute to the heroic spirit of common people taking up arms against the Nazi invaders. Errol Flynn delivers a fine, understated performance as a common fisherman who leads the town’s resistance efforts, while Ann Sheridan’s strong character reflects the strength of all womankind. And featured in the superb ensemble cast are Walter Huston, Ruth Gordon, and Judith Anderson.

Sink Your Teeth Into Trailer For Sean Ellis’s Werewolf Horror Film THE CURSED Howling Into Theaters February 18 With Score By Lorne Balfe

Ready for growing hair, sprouting teeth, and howling at the moon that is a Werewolf horror movie?

Director Sean Ellis’ gothic thriller The Cursed will be released in theaters on February 18, 2022. Written and helmed by Sean Ellis, The Cursed stars Boyd Holbrook (The Sandman, The Fugitive, Logan), Kelly Reilly (Yellowstone, True Detective, Above Suspicion) and Alistair Petrie (Sex Education, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, The Night Manager) in a reimagining of the werewolf legend.

Ellis said: “The Cursed was born from the desire to reimagine and update the Werewolf legend for a modern day audience. I wanted to play on the known folklore of the legend and give it a fresh approach to the cliched story devices that have been copied from the original 1941 film, The Wolf Man.”

In the late 1800s, a once-peaceful remote country village is under attack—but by who or what, no one knows.  Villagers spread rumors of a cursed land, supernatural forces, and even demonic creatures, as the disappearances and killings continue.  Pathologist John McBride arrives to investigate the danger, only to discover something much deeper and more sinister than he ever could have imagined.

Released by LD Entertainment, the film is produced by Ellis, Mickey Liddell and Pete Shilaimon, and executive produced by Alison Semenza and Jacob Yakob. Ellis also shot the film. Formerly titled Eight for Silver, the film premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival.

Filmmaker Sean Ellis commented, “Sundance is always an incredible place to showcase your work. In the time that has followed that valuable experience, we took the opportunity to invigorate the film with an updated score by Lorne Balfe; we changed much of the CGI and decided to put back much of the original in-camera effects. We also elevated elements of the story that pay tribute to the incredible multitude of layers that live within the horror genre.”

LD’s Mickey Liddell and Pete Shilaimon said, “We set out to make a genre film with an incredibly talented filmmaker. Sean Ellis has created a story that is so much more than that: it’s timely, scary as hell, and most importantly unique. We are thrilled for people to finally see Sean’s striking vision on the big screen.”

THE ICE AGE ADVENTURES OF BUCK WILD – Review

Crash (voiced by Seann William Scott), Eddie (voiced by Josh Peck), Zee (voiced by Justina Machado), and Buck (voiced by Simon Pegg) in THE ICE AGE ADVENTURES OF BUCK WILD, exclusively on Disney+. Photo courtesy of Disney Enterprises, Inc. © 2022 Disney Enterprises, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Whoa, talk about deja vu! it seems like it was just a couple of weeks ago when I was reviewing a new addition to a much-beloved animation franchise…and it was. And here we go again. I’m guessing that the streaming services believe that the winter weather will keep the “wee ones” indoors during January, along with the various Covid “surging waves”. So yes, like that previous flick, this animated outing will bypass theatres and “drop” on a popular platform. Oh, and there are several other big comparisons that we’ll discuss later. And did I mention that this one somewhat celebrates the 20th anniversary of the franchise? Indeed, as it’s the sixth series entry, though it spotlights a few of the later supporting players, hence its complex moniker, THE ICE AGE ADVENTURES OF BUCK WILD.

After a brief series summary from Ellie the Wooly Mammoth, we’re cavorting through the snowy slopes with twin possums Eddie (voice of Aaron Harris) and Crash (Vincent Tong), which results in an avalanche that wrecks the “family oasis” they share with adopted big “sis” Ellie, her mate Manny, Sabre-tooth tiger Diego, and Sid the Ground Sloth. After they relocate, the twins are given a stern lecture, which, of course, doesn’t “take”. Just past bedtime, the dup decides to go out on their own. Soon, they cause a big crack in the frozen surface which sends them plunging to the entrance to the “Lost World”, the warm underground home of the last dinosaurs, a place Ellie has told them to avoid. And you guessed it, the twins march in and are quickly set upon by the ravenous raptor henchmen of the “big-brained” genius dino known as Orson (Utkarsh Ambudkar). Luckily the brothers are rescued by an old pal, the swashbuckling weasel hero Buck Wild (Simon Pegg). However, their safety is temporary as Buck tells them of Orson’s master plan to rule the “dino paradise”. Even with the help of resourceful zorilla Zee, can Buck and the boys thwart the devious dino and his reptilian army? And is there a chance that Eddie and Crash will re-unite with Ellie, Manny, Diego, and Sid?

Perhaps the bigger question is: Will anybody really care? It’s all a rather uninspired extension of what was once an engaging entertaining franchise. As I hinted earlier, this is only a couple of weeks after the latest HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA skipped theatres and headed right to Amazon Prime streaming, so the somewhat shaky groundwork has been laid. While two of the many series voice actors of HOTEL passed on reprising their roles, none of the ICE AGE originals lent their voices here, save for the always energetic Pegg, whose character was introduced a couple of flicks ago. And yes, Buck is a nice satirical spin on the jaunty action hero, though he’s not really the focus of the flimsy plot. That’s the job for twins Crash and Eddie who are bland and nearly interchangeable, much like a less mischievous, but furrier version of the Katzenjammer Kids (how’s that for an ancient reference). Plus the villains are pretty “blah” too, with vague motivations and a messy masterplan. Zee’s a fun fluffy spin on Lara Croft, but she’s used as an easy “out” for quick escapes while deferring to Buck too often. Perhaps the biggest crime is the booting of the original quartet (Ellie, Manny, Diego, and Sid) to the sidelines, absent for great chunks of the tale. The look of the film is lush with vibrant jungles and shimmering streams, plus the character designs have a toy-like vibe with the raptors being multi-colored gangly goofballs rather than the JURASSIC PARK demons. But everything’s ground to a halt by the stalled story and the lackluster pacing (mammoths move faster). Our old prehistoric pals deserve a better farewell than the tepid, not-so-nice THE ICE AGE ADVENTURES OF BUCK WILD.

FLEE- Review

The following review was originally posted on December 2, 2021

This weekend sees the release of a new documentary concerning a subject that’s been covered extensively in the news over the last several years: the refugee crisis in the Middle East. Yes, it’s been part of the political debate, and countless reports have flooded the news outlets, not to mention feature-length and short-subjects “docs”. And yet this one feels fresh and immediate. Perhaps that’s due of the medium as this is an animated feature (well, about 95% of it), proving that that said medium (it’s not a genre) can be used to tell all sorts of stories (remember Spidey grabbing an Oscar, and the stop-motion drama ANOMALISA). Plus it’s a most intimate tale as it’s a coming of age saga related by a man whose later lifestyle would leave him no choice but to FLEE.

This true story of the now-adult Amin (voice of Riz Ahmed) commences in present-day Copenhagen as he is interviewed by a former classmate and friend Jonas (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau). Amin isn’t eager to share painful childhood memories, as he finishes his education in the US while starting a home with his partner Kaspar. But he indulges his pal with early recollections of growing up in Kabul, during the turbulent 1980s. He romps through the dusty streets while clad in one of his sisters’ dresses, dashing into the kitchen just as his grey-haired mother prepares Dinner. Many of those silver strands came from losing her military pilot husband who was arrested when the new communist regime took power. As the battles crept closer to the city, Amin’s family had no choice but to escape. Luckily his oldest brother, who’s a “cleaner’ in Sweden, meets them in Moscow, the “holding place” until they can join him (he’s trying to get the funds together). Over the next months, the family must hide in the tiny Russian apartment, avoiding the police, as they attempt to leave the country via arduous hiking and a rusted cargo ship all arranged by brutal human traffickers. Through it all, Amin trudges forward while realizing that his sexuality would prevent him from ever returning to his homeland.

Much as with the aforementioned SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE, the art of animation is elevated beyond family fables and musicals, to delve deeply into one man’s journey, both geographic and emotional. And though much of the current animated fare is done digitally, this film harkens back to the golden era of hand-drawn, or 2-D, films with the look of a graphic novel brought to vivid life. The main characters are given a simple outline, the thickness resembling a pen point or perhaps a well-worn marker. Basic curved lines and slashes represent the main features like eyes and noses. The colors are natural and subdued, often bathing the characters in a hue to emphasize their moods or the urgency of the sequence (the blues make us feel the cold during a winter trek through the snowy woods to the “escape vessel”). Yet there’s still room for moments of whimsy that might not have worked with live-action (a wink from an 80s action movie star). Early on, we even get a homage to a sketched MTV staple from A-Ha. Best of all, the choices help us focus on Amin and his family, as the bystanders are often rendered with blank faces, while the most harrowing memories are down with a jittery urgency with silhouettes blurring across pale color swatches. And kudos to the sound mixers who place us right in the middle of brutality, then suddenly escort us to the bliss of the countryside. It’s a triumph for the director Jonas Peter Rasmussen who co-wrote the film with its subject Amin Nawabi (their screen voices, Ahmed and Coster-Waldau, are also part of the producing team). My biggest compliment is that it feels like a feature version of the great shorts from the National Film Board of Canada (the highlight of many traveling animation fests). With its distant approach, FLEE. puts us right in the well-worn shoes of this weary world-explorer.

Gene Kelly and Vincent Price in THE THREE MUSKETEERS Available on Blu-ray February 15th From Warner Archive

“It takes a good man to prevent a catastrophe, milady, and a great man to make use of one.”

Gene Kelly, Van Heflin, Lana Turner and Vincent Price in THE THREE MUSKETEERS (1948) will available on Blu-ray February 15th from Warner Archive. It can be purchased at the Warner Archive Amazon Store HERE

Gene Kelly stars as the swashbuckling young French nobleman D’Artagnan who, possessing nothing more than his title, travels to Paris to join The Three Musketeers. D’Artagnan no sooner arrives in the capital, than he insults Athos (Van Heflin), Porthos (Academy Award winner Gig Young) and Aramis (Robert Coote), the most feared of the musketeers. Challenged to a duel by each, D’Artagnan earns their respect with his courage, if not by his fighting prowess. But his courage, skill and wit are quickly needed to help the musketeers thwart a plot by the powerful Prime Minister Richelieu (Vincent Price) to overthrow King Louis XIII (Frank Morgan), save Queen Anne (Angela Lansbury) and win the heart of Lady de Winter (Lana Turner). This all-star frolic was a box-office hit as M-G-M and director George Sidney pulled out the stops to bring together its finest talents, and now it’s been restored and remastered for its Blu-ray debut.
