FLEE- Review

The following review was originally posted on December 2, 2021

This weekend sees the release of a new documentary concerning a subject that’s been covered extensively in the news over the last several years: the refugee crisis in the Middle East. Yes, it’s been part of the political debate, and countless reports have flooded the news outlets, not to mention feature-length and short-subjects “docs”. And yet this one feels fresh and immediate. Perhaps that’s due of the medium as this is an animated feature (well, about 95% of it), proving that that said medium (it’s not a genre) can be used to tell all sorts of stories (remember Spidey grabbing an Oscar, and the stop-motion drama ANOMALISA). Plus it’s a most intimate tale as it’s a coming of age saga related by a man whose later lifestyle would leave him no choice but to FLEE.

This true story of the now-adult Amin (voice of Riz Ahmed) commences in present-day Copenhagen as he is interviewed by a former classmate and friend Jonas (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau). Amin isn’t eager to share painful childhood memories, as he finishes his education in the US while starting a home with his partner Kaspar. But he indulges his pal with early recollections of growing up in Kabul, during the turbulent 1980s. He romps through the dusty streets while clad in one of his sisters’ dresses, dashing into the kitchen just as his grey-haired mother prepares Dinner. Many of those silver strands came from losing her military pilot husband who was arrested when the new communist regime took power. As the battles crept closer to the city, Amin’s family had no choice but to escape. Luckily his oldest brother, who’s a “cleaner’ in Sweden, meets them in Moscow, the “holding place” until they can join him (he’s trying to get the funds together). Over the next months, the family must hide in the tiny Russian apartment, avoiding the police, as they attempt to leave the country via arduous hiking and a rusted cargo ship all arranged by brutal human traffickers. Through it all, Amin trudges forward while realizing that his sexuality would prevent him from ever returning to his homeland.

Much as with the aforementioned SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE, the art of animation is elevated beyond family fables and musicals, to delve deeply into one man’s journey, both geographic and emotional. And though much of the current animated fare is done digitally, this film harkens back to the golden era of hand-drawn, or 2-D, films with the look of a graphic novel brought to vivid life. The main characters are given a simple outline, the thickness resembling a pen point or perhaps a well-worn marker. Basic curved lines and slashes represent the main features like eyes and noses. The colors are natural and subdued, often bathing the characters in a hue to emphasize their moods or the urgency of the sequence (the blues make us feel the cold during a winter trek through the snowy woods to the “escape vessel”). Yet there’s still room for moments of whimsy that might not have worked with live-action (a wink from an 80s action movie star). Early on, we even get a homage to a sketched MTV staple from A-Ha. Best of all, the choices help us focus on Amin and his family, as the bystanders are often rendered with blank faces, while the most harrowing memories are down with a jittery urgency with silhouettes blurring across pale color swatches. And kudos to the sound mixers who place us right in the middle of brutality, then suddenly escort us to the bliss of the countryside. It’s a triumph for the director Jonas Peter Rasmussen who co-wrote the film with its subject Amin Nawabi (their screen voices, Ahmed and Coster-Waldau, are also part of the producing team). My biggest compliment is that it feels like a feature version of the great shorts from the National Film Board of Canada (the highlight of many traveling animation fests). With its distant approach, FLEE. puts us right in the well-worn shoes of this weary world-explorer.

Gene Kelly and Vincent Price in THE THREE MUSKETEERS Available on Blu-ray February 15th From Warner Archive

“It takes a good man to prevent a catastrophe, milady, and a great man to make use of one.”

Gene Kelly, Van Heflin, Lana Turner and Vincent Price in THE THREE MUSKETEERS (1948) will available on Blu-ray February 15th from Warner Archive. It can be purchased at the Warner Archive Amazon Store HERE

Gene Kelly stars as the swashbuckling young French nobleman D’Artagnan who, possessing nothing more than his title, travels to Paris to join The Three Musketeers. D’Artagnan no sooner arrives in the capital, than he insults Athos (Van Heflin), Porthos (Academy Award winner Gig Young) and Aramis (Robert Coote), the most feared of the musketeers. Challenged to a duel by each, D’Artagnan earns their respect with his courage, if not by his fighting prowess. But his courage, skill and wit are quickly needed to help the musketeers thwart a plot by the powerful Prime Minister Richelieu (Vincent Price) to overthrow King Louis XIII (Frank Morgan), save Queen Anne (Angela Lansbury) and win the heart of Lady de Winter (Lana Turner). This all-star frolic was a box-office hit as M-G-M and director George Sidney pulled out the stops to bring together its finest talents, and now it’s been restored and remastered for its Blu-ray debut.

Screen International calls THE LONG WALK “metaphysical mind-melting horror” and Slash Film calls “emotional, raw-to-the-bone filmmaking”

An old scavenger living on the fringes of a near-future society exploits a ghostly companion’s ability to traverse time, hoping to prevent his mother’s suffering from a terminal illness.

THE LONG WALK world premiered to great acclaim at the Venice Film Festival in the Giornate degli Autori section and was followed by praise out of the Toronto International Film Festival. It’s the third feature of Lao based director Mattie Do (Chanthaly, Dearest Sister), whose career has been recognized by the Oldenburg International Film Festival and Locarno International Film Festival for her breakthrough work as Lao’s first and only woman filmmaker, and the only filmmaker of the country to work in the horror and fantastic genres.

A deliberately paced story that burns with intensity and human emotion, THE LONG WALK is all at once a culturally rich ghost story, a grim near-future sci-fi, and mystery with life and death stakes that spans across decades.

THE LONG WALK stars Yannawoutthi Chanthalungsy, Vilouna Phetmany, Por Silatsa, Noutnapha Soydara, Chanthamone Inoudome, and Vithaya Sombath.

LA SOGA: SALVATION – Review

Hada Vanessa as assassin Dani in writer/director Manny Perez’ LA SOGA: SALVATION. Courtesy of Screen Media

For a definition of what people mean when they describe a crime drama as “gritty,” look no further than LA SOGA: SALVATION, a mostly-subtitled tale of a former Dominican hit man, Luisito (writer/director Manny Perez), struggling to leave that life after a personal tragedy. He’s moved many times to avoid the cartels and corrupt politicians he’d targeted. He was one of the “good” assassins, bumping off the worst of the bad guys ruining his country. Think of him as playing the vigilante role somewhere between a Zorro and a Dexter. We meet him in Rhode Island with a new love, Lia (Sarah Jorge Leon), while living small to stay under the radar of former associates and enemies. Of course, that doesn’t work, or we wouldn’t have much of a movie.

His past catches up in the form of some guys trying to kill him and others taking Lia as a hostage to force him to do one more hit, and recover a thumb drive with vital information. Complicating his ordeal is the presence of another skilled assassin, Dani (Hada Vanessa), whose reasons for entering this mare’s nest remain obscure for much of the film.

The low-budget look of the production works as an asset. Everything occurs in rundown urban settings, in gray, overcast weather. No sunshine on the set or in Perez’ character’s life, other than the slim hope for a peaceful new life with his new love. The cast of relatively unknown actors (at least to many U.S. audiences) adds to the suspense of how things will play out, since everyone seems more expendable than major stars tend to be. The most familiar face belongs to Juan Fernandez, whose name you may not know, but any fan of cartel, gangland and other crime flicks will instantly recognize from a zillion supporting roles. Actually, it’s only about 70, but his distinctive looks and bearing always enhance those productions. Even dropping in for a metaphoric cup of coffee here, his presence is a plus.

Many are tortured, maimed or killed – often in gruesome visual and auditory detail. This aspect of the film is not for the faint of heart. But the oft-used premise of a bad guy trying to be good despite pressures pulling him back to the dark side plays out efficiently, with a suitable balance of action and character development, satisfying the urge for visceral kicks, while developing empathy for the principals.

Perez turns in a solid performance as the stone-cold killer scrambling to do what’s needed to save the day and leave his past in the past for good. But the one who really makes this story compelling is Hada Vanessa, who sizzles as the type of sexy psycho killer one may associate with a Gina Gershon, or Sofia Boutella’s show-stopping turn as the spring-legged slasher in the first KINGSMAN movie. Or several of Juliette Lewis’ earlier roles.

As a whole, LA SOGA: SALVATION is nothing special. But among options in the genre, it’s well above average in delivering bang for your buck. As writer and director, Perez crafted a fine vehicle for the acting side of his career, while showing how much he could accomplish on an apparently minimal budget, increasing his potential for more work behind the camera as well.

LA SOGA: SALVATION, in English and Spanish with subtitles, opens Friday, Jan. 28, in selected theaters and on demand on Roku and Vudu.

Black and White Version of Guillermo del Toro’s NIGHTMARE ALLEY: VISION IN DARKNESS AND LIGHT Opens in St. Louis Theaters Friday

“Step right up and behold one of the unexplained mysteries of the universe! Is he a man or beast? “

A Black and White Version of Guillermo del Toro’s NIGHTMARE ALLEY called NIGHTMARE ALLEY: VISION IN DARKNESS AND LIGHT opens in St. Louis Theaters Friday January 28th. It will be showing at The Marcus Ronnies and Plaza Frontenac.

Experience NIGHTMARE ALLEY in the classic film noir style of black and white for a limited time. Guillermo del Toro’s NIGHTMARE ALLEY follows charismatic but down-on-his-luck Stanton Carlisle (Bradley Cooper) who endears himself to clairvoyant Zeena (Toni Collette) and her has-been mentalist husband Pete (David Strathairn) at a traveling carnival, he crafts a golden ticket to success, using this newly acquired knowledge to grift the wealthy elite of 1940s New York Society. With the virtuous Molly (Rooney Mara) loyally by his side, Stanton plots to con a dangerous tycoon (Richard Jenkins) with the aid of a mysterious psychiatrist (Cate Blanchett) who might be his most formidable opponent yet.

“Although we shot Nightmare Alley in color, we lit it as if it were black and white,” del Toro said. “You can see exactly the same level of design, and we wanted to give viewers this special vantage as a take of the classic noir genre that the film is part of.”
