DEEP WATER (2022) – Review

So for the last couple of weeks, the box office has been dominated by the latest incarnation of a fabled comic book hero re-imagined, as many reviewers, including one from this site, noted as a dark (almost pitch-black) “noir” thriller. Ah, but there’s an element largely missing from it (no doubt to keep its PG-13 rating), which was a hallmark of many a classic “noir” (DOUBLE INDEMNITY, THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE, and BODY HEAT spring to mind…RIP William Hurt) and that’s a dangerous and often deadly sexual attraction. Yes, “the Bat” and “the Cat’ share a smooch and longing gazes, but there’s no fogging of the Batmobile windows. Now if you’re in the mood for that, this weekend sees the release of such a tawdry tale, set in the real world, far from Gotham City. Oh, but one of its co-stars did wear the cowl and cape for a time. He may wish he still had that handy utility belt when seduction and murder threaten to pull him down in the depths of very DEEP WATER.

For all appearances, this modern opulent New Orleans home is occupied by a “picture perfect” family. Pretty-much retired tech inventor (deadly drones) Vic (Ben Affleck) peddles his bike in the mornings and tends to his greenhouse snails in the afternoon. His gorgeous younger wife Melinda (Ana de Armas) runs the house and tends to their adorable seven-year-old daughter Trixie (Grace Jenkins). Oh, but when the sun goes down, on most evenings Trixie is left with a sitter while her folks attend a big get-together (a pool party or a fancy dinner and drinks) with their equally well-to-do circle of friends. That’s where Melinda gets tipsy and openly flirts with her newest “boy toy”. Vic’s best bud Grant (Lil Rel Howery) is concerned (along with many others) that she’s making a cuckold of him. But Vic shrugs it off as her way of “acting out’ as she’ll go home with him. Oh, but there’s still lots of talk about how Melinda’s last “male friend” has gone missing. Still, things are strained back at their homestead, especially when Vic finds out that she’s paying thousands of dollars for piano lessons from a local entertainer, Charlie (Jacob Elordi). When an accident befalls him, a newcomer to the “party people”, author Don (Tracy Letts) becomes curious. Is this an idea for a possible new book or play or does he think that Vic is more than just a laid-back clueless spouse? Or could this be a twisted “game” to enliven a near-comatose marriage?

It’s interesting that this steamy bit of kink is actually anchored by the “ultra-cool” and quiet performance of Mr. Affleck. Last year saw him turn in some great supporting work in THE LAST DUEL (very funny, but as Stephen Colbert loves to say, “Nobody saw it!!”) and THE TENDER BAR (lovely, but criminally overlooked), but this is a reserved side of him little seen in his often high-profile leading man-type roles. His Vic is a passive aggression riddle leaving many characters confused, wondering if he’s a friendly joking “Joe” or if he’s oozing menace with a soft threat. It seems as though he only really cares about his daughter…and his snails. It makes us wonder if his passions ever “boiled to the surface” in his wooing of Melinda. As played by de Armas (so good in the last Bond flick, but so underused), she’s often a petulant child, seemingly less mature than lil’ Trixie. Plus Melinda is often indifferent with her offspring, raging at her favorite “kiddie” tune and telling Vic that “This is what you wanted”. But somehow de Armas makes her desperate cries for attention (piano dancing…really) more tragic than appalling (though certainly not appealing) as she flaunts her newest bit of “pretty plaything” or “hunk of the week”. Letts makes a good impression as the cynical writer who immediately smells something “fishy” and refuses to back down as Vic offers weak tepid explanations. Once again Howery is the “best bud”, though it’s not nearly as “meaty” as turns in GET OUT and FREE GUY (he proved a good lead in VACATION FRIENDS, so perhaps he can pass on the next “pal” part). And though he’s not given much to do, Finn Wittrock is a strong screen presence in the film’s final act.

Taking the director’s chair after a twenty-year “break is “Mr. Sexy-Cinema-time” Adrian Lyne. It’s no big surprise since the whole film seems like an early 1990s “psycho-sensual thriller-diller” mixed with a Southern Gothic vibe that would be in heavy rotation after midnight on “Skin-amax” (or perhaps a super “crossover” special of “Red Shoe Diaries” and “The Hitchhiker”). It all feels of a bygone more exploitive era as we’re treated to the antics of Melinda perhaps intended to shock and titillate. It’s all an attempt to distract from the too languid pacing and the turgid melodramatics. And it doesn’t help that the main characters are so morally repugnant. If Vic cares so deeply for Trixie then he needs to put more efforting into getting out of that squalid setting. But is he in an emotional S and M style bond with Melinda (their only passion occurs when she thinks he’s making eyes at Don’s much-younger spouse)? Even though he’s the closest to a “hero’ the plot has, Don’s dogged obsession is irritatingly clunky. Aside from Vic’s “drone-past” (which immediately fires up Don’s “radar), nobody appears to do anything other than “prep” for that night’s pricey party. It makes me wonder what the screenwriting duo may have reworked in their adaptation of the novel by Patricia Highsmith (STRANGERS ON A TRAIN, THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY). I’d hope that it’s a more engaging and brisk “page-turner” than the overwrought and over-heated dismal DEEP WATER. Glug. Glug.

MORE THAN ROBOTS – Review

The movies have helped to propel our fascination (especially kids) with mechanical men. And women, since one of cinema’s most iconic fantasy images comes from the silent era, namely the female facsimile of Maria played by Brigitte Helm in the Fritz lang classic METROPOLIS, which in turn inspired the look of C-3PO in the Star Wars franchise. In those fifty years in between, there was the clunkier Tin Man of THE WIZARD OF OZ, countless slow-moving metal menaces in cheesy sci-fi and horror flicks and serials. leading to the more whimsical Robby the Robot in FORBIDDEN PLANET (who’s a not-too-distant relation of the Robot from TV’s “Lost in Space”). And there are countless more human-looking “artificials” in WESTWORLD and the many Terminator incarnations. We’re not quite there, though there have been “bot-building” contests and competitions for teens over the last thirty years. That’s the focus of this new feature-length doc which follows several of those teens from around the globe striving to show that their passion encompasses MORE THAN ROBOTS.

The camera crews are truly “globe-hopping” as they profile the different high school teams prepping for the 2019 FIRST Robotics Competition, an event begun by Dean (Mr. Segway) Kamen as a way to motivate and inspire young minds. After a brief prologue set at the big contest, the film jumps back three months to introduce several hopeful entrants. There are a couple of California-based students interviewed. In El Segundo, Jacob is proud to be part of his school’s team (each has a number and a creative name) #4201 the Vitruvian Bots, while over in Compton, Aaron has high hopes for#6904, the Terawatts. From there they skip across the “pond” to Chiba Japan where Kanon has arrived from Minnesota to be a mentor to the just-formed team at the Chiba Institute of Technology, Sakura Tempesta. And south of our border young Mariana is a big part of team #4010, Nautilis out of Mexico City. After Winter break, the different teams meet at a preview event to find out what the theme for the year requires in the way of tasks for their devices. FIRST has teamed with Lucasfilm ( a producer on this film also) as part of the Star Wars: A Force for Change initiative, and a fabled cast member of that movie franchise briefs them via video on the “mission”. Their robots will have to gather up spongy yellow balls, shoot them into hole-like “ports” (getting points for every ball going in). and then have the robots pull themselves up and balance on a lowered pole (though it resembles a huge coat hanger). Then the kids are off and running after getting a big box of assigned materials. The filmmakers follow them and their teachers and mentors through the whole process, full of long hours and mechanical “snafus”.Everyone’s laser-focused on the Spring event, not knowing that the year 2020 has a few “surprises” in store for them.

Hot on the heels of LUCY AND DESI just a couple of weeks ago, this new film marks the documentary feature debut of yet another talented comic (mainly) actress, Gillian Jacobs (best known for the TV series “Community” and soon to be seen in THE CONTRACTOR). With the confidence of an old “doc pro” Jacobs deftly balances the personal stories of the global quartet with a history of the FIRST tournies and a sweeping, up-close, in the middle of the action, overview of the big event that they’ve all working toward. The energy and enthusiasm of the young people are infectious as they scurry about, making last-minute “fixes” and cheering each other on to new heights. She captures the fervent mania of the big FIRST event which almost feels like the college basketball annual tournaments (like “March Madness”), but a big difference is extolled by the participants and the founder, Kamen. The sting of competition is softened by the fact that the teams merge, two become one, in the final challenges, learning to work together and build on their ideas and strengths. Sure, it’s mainly a “feel good” modern fable, but Jacobs shows us that all the tests and ‘trial runs” can be for naught as the machines seemingly refuse to function. But there are no wailing and gnashing of teeth (braces mostly) displays of dramatic despair, rather an “Oh well, back to the drawing board (or laptop)”. Plus there’s the unexpected element of suspense as Jacobs lets our knowledge of the early 2020 world events creep in, making the plans of the teams more poignant. And again, when the world “stopped” they go on to use their skills in another arena with a very different set of goals. We come away feeling that, yes, “the kids are alright” because their dreams are about much MORE THAN ROBOTS.

Angelenos Doug Billings and Tracy Garner are about to get married. Two days before the wedding, the four men in the wedding party – Doug, Doug’s two best buddies Phil Wenneck and Stu Price, and Tracy’s brother Alan Garner – hop into Tracy’s father’s beloved Mercedes convertible for a 24-hour stag party to Las Vegas. Phil, a married high school teacher, has the same maturity level as his students when he’s with his pals. Stu, a dentist, is worried about everything, especially what his controlling girlfriend Melissa thinks. Because she disapproves of traditional male bonding rituals, Stu has to lie to her about the stag, he telling her that they are going on a wine tasting tour in the Napa Valley. Regardless, he intends on eventually marrying her, against the advice and wishes of his friends. And Alan seems to be unaware of what are considered the social graces of the western world. The morning after their arrival in Las Vegas, they awaken in their hotel suite each with the worst hangover. None remembers what happened in the past twelve or so hours. The suite is in shambles. And certain things are in the suite that shouldn’t be, and certain things that should be in the suite are missing. Probably the most important in the latter category is Doug. As Phil, Stu and Alan try to find Doug using only what little pieces of information they have at hand, they go on a journey of discovery of how certain things got into the suite and what happened to the missing items. However they are on a race for time as if they can’t find Doug in the next few hours, they are going to have to explain to Tracy why they are not yet back in Los Angeles. And even worse, they may not find Doug at all before the wedding.

Arctic Circle – TV Series Review

Lina Kuustonen as small town cop Nina in the Finnish TV series “Arctic Circle” (“Ivalo”), streaming on Topic. Courtesy of Topic

The first season of the Finnish crime procedural “Arctic Circle” (original title: “Ivalo”) has been streaming in the U.S. for a while, but I just watched it now as prep for covering Season Two. That’s fortunate. The first year introduced us to a fine protagonist in small-town cop Nina (Lina Kuustonen) who finds the remains of a hooker in her snow-covered Lapland area near Finland’s Russian border. The murder victim’s body leads to discovery of a sex trafficking ring, further complicated by a lethal, sexually-transmitted virus that threatens to spread to pandemic level. Many elements of intrigue ebb and flow for 10 episodes, embracing a number of issues that will seem even more relevant post-Covid than when originally aired in 2018, including an all-too-analogous conflict between governmental and medical priorities.

The execution of that debut year, alas, is not as compelling as this recap reads. The entire plot, including all needed personal relationship arcs, could have made a taut, suspenseful binge, if trimmed to six or seven installments. Despite Nina’s evoking all the empathy one hopes to develop with any protagonist, it felt like a slog to follow her through all 10. But since a number of the cast and story arcs carry over into the vastly superior second season, the time turned out to be justified. Season One was helpful, though perhaps not essential, to full engagement in Nina’s newly-released Round Two. This season is shortened to six more tightly-scripted episodes for a much better viewing experience.

Again, the season covers one major crime. Nina has been promoted to a higher-level police unit, more befitting her previously-underutilized skills. This one starts with an old, high-profile murder that resurfaces in the public eye, leading to a much broader criminal enterprise, again spanning both sides of the Finnish-Russian border. That premise allows for considerably more action and suspense than contained in the first. In both seasons, Nina’s complicated relationships with her mother, daughter and sister (plus a few others) deepen the viewers’ emotional connection to the proceedings. Surprisingly, and commendably, they manage to deliver more depth with those characters – especially her daughter (Venla Ronkainen) – in fewer episodes, while also featuring a more intense main plot line.

Those who have already seen Season One, and found it similarly tedious, shouldn’t assume more of the same lies ahead. Your patience will be rewarded by this  tighter, more satisfying journey with Officer Nina that bodes well for the possibility of further outings to come.

“Arctic Circle,” in mostly Finnish with English subtitles, is available streaming on Topic starting on Mar. 17.

Watch The First Trailer For PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH Starring The Voices Of Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Olivia Colman, John Mulaney And Florence Pugh

This fall, everyone’s favorite leche-loving, swashbuckling, fear-defying feline returns.

For the first time in more than a decade, DreamWorks Animation presents a new adventure in the Shrek universe as daring outlaw Puss in Boots discovers that his passion for peril and disregard for safety have taken their toll. Puss has burned through eight of his nine lives, though he lost count along the way. Getting those lives back will send Puss in Boots on his grandest quest yet.

Academy Award® nominee Antonio Banderas returns as the voice of the notorious PiB as he embarks on an epic journey into the Black Forest to find the mythical Wishing Star and restore his lost lives. But with only one life left, Puss will have to humble himself and ask for help from his former partner and nemesis: the captivating Kitty Soft Paws (Oscar® nominee Salma Hayek).

In their quest, Puss and Kitty will be aided—against their better judgment—by a ratty, chatty, relentlessly cheerful mutt, Perro (Harvey Guillén, What We Do in the Shadows). Together, our trio of heroes will have to stay one step ahead of Goldilocks (Oscar® nominee Florence Pugh, Black Widow) and the Three Bears Crime Family, “Big” Jack Horner (Emmy winner John Mulaney, Big Mouth) and terrifying bounty hunter, The Big Bad Wolf (Wagner Moura, Narcos).

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish features an all-star comedic cast that includes Oscar® winner Olivia Colman, Ray Winstone (Black Widow), Samson Kayo (Sliced), Emmy nominee Anthony Mendez (Jane the Virgin) and Tony nominee Da’Vine Joy Randolph (Trolls World Tour).

The long-awaited follow-up to the 2011 Academy Award®-nominated blockbuster, The Last Wish is directed by Joel Crawford and produced by Mark Swift, the creative team behind DreamWorks Animation’s smash, The Croods: A New Age. The film’s executive producer is Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri.

The character of Puss in Boots first appeared in 2004’s Oscar®-nominated Shrek 2 and instantly became a global, scene-stealing sensation. Puss then co-starred in two other Shrek sequels and his solo film, as well as in multiple DreamWorks Animation videos and TV series. The Shrek and Puss in Boots films have collectively earned more than $3.5 billion worldwide.
