HARD TIMES – The Blu Review

hardtimes1-560

No one could touch Charles Bronson in terms of global popularity throughout the 1970’s and HARD TIMES was his best film from that decade (my favorite for cinema, the only films from the ‘70s I would personally rate above HARD TIMES are TAXI DRIVER, TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, and THE GODFATHER). Walter Hill, in his 1976 directorial debut, made a remarkably earthy and entertaining film about illegal bare-knuckle fighting in Depression-era New Orleans. HARD TIMES, whose succinct tag line read “New Orleans 1933, in those days words didn’t buy much”, perfectly exploits Bronson’s granite presence and is a concise, almost mythical celebration of men who only communicate with their fists. Bronson is Chaney, a hardened loner who hops off a freight train in New Orleans where he tries to score some quick cash the only way he knows how-with his fists.

hard-times5-e

The fight scenes in HARD TIMES, which seem authentic rather over-choreographed, are expertly staged and framed by Hill, especially the films centerpiece; an underground cage match between Bronson and a grinning goon named ‘Skinhead’ played by Robert ‘Mr. Clean’ Tessier. Supporting vets Strother Martin, James Coburn, and Ben Johnson all act up a storm but it’s Bronson, whose expression never changes, that commands all the attention. Bronson’s Chaney is a man of few words and no past and it’s perhaps his most fitting role. Acclaimed in 1976, HARD TIMES is the perfect Charles Bronson movie for people who claim not to like Charles Bronson movies and even critics who had previously overlooked Bronson’s abilities were impressed.

hard-times2-

I saw HARD TIMES in 1976 when it was new, riding my bike at 14 to the Des Peres 4 theater with some friends. In the summer of 1978 I attended wrestling camp at the University of Missouri and one night for entertainment, we were screened a 16mm print of HARD TIMES. I have an 18-minute Super-8 condensed version of the film that I’ve shown at my monthly Super-8 Movie Madness show. It’s printed on black-and-white stock and dubbed into German, but it always gets the crowd worked up.

hard-times1

The 2.35:1 1080p transfer of HARD TIMES is immaculate and looks as good as the film ever has, doing justice to Philip Lathrop’s outstanding cinematography. The image is incredibly sharp. The blood and sweat of the boxers comes across nicely and there isn’t a bad looking sequence in the picture. The colors are strong and feature some thick, deep blacks, supplemented with lighter-washed-out tones (stylistically representative of the Depression). The enhanced resolution gives the fighting matches more bounce and with the 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio surround mix, you can almost feel Bronson’s bare fists pounding the bones of his opponents. Barry De Vorzon’s folksy score sounds terrific as well.

hardtimesbehond

If I have a complaint, it’s with the extras on the disc. Aside from a trailer, there aren’t any. A dream release would have deleted scenes. I know Hill shot a lot more footage including a fight with black actor Frank McRae (photos from that excised fight scene are printed in the HARD TIMES paperback tie-in) and I read in an interview with actor Bruce Glover in Shock Cinema magazine that Hill’s original cut ran just over two hours (as opposed to the 94 minutes it clocks in at). Hill is notoriously reticent about discussing his films (he’s never done a commentary) and I wonder where these lost scenes are.

hardtimes-2-560

Inside the keepcase alongside the disc is a booklet of liner notes that offer welcome perspective and history on the movie nicely written by Julie Kirgo.

This Blu-ray presentation from Twilight Time is being issued in a limited edition of 3,000 copies, so those who are interested are well-advised to visit the Screen Archives website to confirm that it is still available. Some knuckleheads on ebay are trying to get $60 for it, but I ordered mine from Screen Archives last week for the retail price of $29.99 and it was in my mailbox two days later. Hurry up and grab your HARD TIMES Blu-ray before they’re gone or Charles Bronson will kick your ass.

Screenwriter and Author Richard Matheson Dead at 87

Matheson-author-header

We’ve lost a genius. Author Richard Matheson influenced a host writers and filmmakers and his output was simply incredible. He wrote the screenplays for six Vincent Price films, including LAST MAN ON EARTH which was based in his novel I Am Legend (filmed two more times with Charlton Heston and Will Smith). THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN, SOMEWHERE IN TIME, THE LEGEND OF HELL HOUSE, DUEL, WHAT DREAMS MAY COME, STIR OF ECHOES and REAL STEEL were all products of Matheson’s fertile imagination as were many episodes of Twilight Zone, Star Trek, The Alfred Hitchcock Hour, and Kolchak the Night Stalker. Matheson leaves behind an incredible volume of high-quality writing with hundreds of screenplays, novels, and short stories. He was 87 and there’s not a lot out there as to the cause of his death but I’ll update this story when I get more info. .

Trailer For ADORE Starring Naomi Watts And Robin Wright Debuts

adore_1

From Exclusive Media, watch the new trailer for the upcoming drama ADORE (previously TWO MOTHERSstarring Naomi Watts and Robin Wright.

Naomi Watts and Robin Wright deliver riveting performances in ADORE, a sensual and provocative drama about two lifelong friends who find unexpected happiness in relationships that cross the bounds of convention. An unpredictable tale of misguided love and a heartfelt celebration of the enduring nature of female friendship, the film is the English-speaking directorial debut of distinguished filmmaker Anne Fontaine (COCO BEFORE CHANEL).

It is adapted for the screen by Academy Award®-winning writer Christopher Hampton (DANGEROUS LIAISONS), from a novella by Nobel Prize winner for Literature Doris Lessing.

Set in an Australian seaside town of otherworldly beauty and shot in lush 35mm Cinemascope, ADORE establishes an aura of fable as it follows two women’s plunge into uncharted waters. Watts and Wright fearlessly engage with both the physical and psychological components of the story, capturing the complex emotions and powerful desires driving their characters. Strong performances from relative newcomers Xavier Samuel (THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE) and James Frecheville (ANIMAL KINGDOM) complement Watts and Wright’s and add another layer of intricacy to the story. Under the precise gaze of Fontaine’s camera, ADORE radiates with intoxicating sensuality while exploring the intricacies of love, family, morality and passion.

ADORE will be in theaters and On Demand September 6th.

MEAN GIRLS This Weekend at Midnight – Reel Late at the Tivoli

meangirls-560

“I’m sorry that people are so jealous of me… but I can’t help it that I’m so popular.”

MEAN GIRLS may only be nine years old, but this cult film for the current generation, which plays this weekend (June 28th and 29th) at Midnight at the Tivoli as part of their Reel Late at the Tivoli Midnight Series, shows how some things never change. High school comes with cliques, bullies, and memories you want to forget. Every person that has gone through the high school experience can relate. MEAN GIRLS does a good job of over exaggerating the typical dreadful four years. Pre-punchline Lindsey Lohan stars as Cady Heron, an unsocialized teenage girl who grew up in Africa and suddenly finds herself in the midst of high school drama. Cady describes the first few days as “a surreal blur”. She starts out being friends with two losers who let her know she is a “regulation hottie”. Lost and innocent, she soon finds herself part of a group known as “the plastics” ,lead by actress Rachel McAdams a group of beautiful bitchy girls that rule the school. At first she pretends to be friends with them as part of a joke, but soon she becomes caught up in her new found popularity and finds herself as a true plastic. The movie follows Cady’s transformation from an innocent home schooled girl to a self-obsessed mean girl.

While MEAN GIRLS harks back to HEATHERS in delving into the cruel dynamics of high school, it addresses many of the problems that popular girls are faced with. Their vulnerability and fears are dominantly on display. Screenwriter Tina Fey’s (who plays a teacher)smart dialogue and attention to all the supporting characters set the bar higher for subsequent teen comedies and MEAN GIRLS has been surprisingly influential which may explain its cult/midnight status.

I will be there with trivia and prizes so bone up on your teen bitch knowledge!

Calling all Beatles fans… the group’s second feature film, 1965’s HELP!, will be released on Blu-ray on Tuesday, June 25 and WAMG is giving away copies to 2 lucky readers.

Directed by Richard Lester, who also directed the band’s debut feature film, 1964’s A Hard Day’s Night, Help! follows The Beatles as they become passive recipients of an outside plot that revolves around Ringo’s possession of a sacrificial ring, which he cannot remove from his finger. As a result, he and his bandmates John, Paul and George are chased from London to the Austrian Alps and the Bahamas by religious cult members, a mad scientist and the London police.

In addition to starring The Beatles, Help! boasts a witty script, a great cast of British character actors, and classic Beatles songs “Help!,” “You’re Going To Lose That Girl,” “You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away,” “Ticket To Ride,” “I Need You,” “The Night Before,” and “Another Girl.”

Help! makes its eagerly awaited Blu-ray debut in a single-disc package pairing the digitally restored film and 5.1 soundtrack with an hour of extra features, including a 30-minute documentary about the making of the film, memories of the cast and crew, an in-depth look at the restoration process, an outtake scene, and original theatrical trailers and radio spots. Help!’s Blu-ray edition follows the 2012 release of The Beatles’ digitally restored Yellow Submarine and Magical Mystery Tour feature films on Blu-ray, DVD and iTunes with extensive extras. Help!’s restoration for its 2007 DVD debut wowed viewers, earning five-times platinum sales in the U.S. and praise from a broad range of top media outlets around the world, including USA Today heralding the DVD as “a grand re-release,” The Guardian’s appreciation of the film’s director, Richard Lester, saying “Lester matches The Beatles’ ‘star’ power with smart, colourful visuals and casual surrealism,” The Los Angeles Times’ restoration rave: “With dynamic compression that was standard in the 1960s lifted for the digital age, the full range of the group’s musicality comes through – it’s like several coats of dust have been cleaned off an old master’s painting,” and four-star reviews from Rolling Stone and MOJO with the latter saying, “They really don’t make them like this anymore.”

Synopsis:

‘Help!’ follows in the great tradition of classic comedy chase movies.

In this instance, John, Paul, George and Ringo, find themselves being pursued across the world by not one but two groups of fanatics with separate agendas.

Ringo possesses a ring with a large red stone set in the middle, sent to him by a fan. Unknown to him this artifact is the sacred sacrificial ring of Goddess Kaili: the deity of an Asian religious cult led by Swami Clang (Leo McKern).

The younger sister of High Priestess Ahme (Eleanor Bron) has been selected by Kaili’s thuggish followers as a human sacrifice. However, panic breaks out when, as she is about to be dispatched by the ceremonial-sword wielding fanatic, Swami Clang, he realizes that she is not wearing this religious bauble.

The human sacrifice is promptly placed on hold.  Clang, Ahme and a bunch of bumbling henchmen organized by Blutha (John Bluthal), set about tracking down the wearer with the aim of retrieving the ring by covering Ringo in bright red paint and sacrificing him in the process.

Even before he realizes he is the object of these fanatics attention, Ringo finds that he can’t slip it off his finger. It’s stuck!

Meanwhile, unbeknownst to Clang, the lovely Ahme is a secret Beatles fan with a shine for Paul.

RS30_HelpBR_Press03-lpr

These cult followers of Kaili frantically pursue The Beatles first, through London, then up the snow-covered Austrian Alps, followed by Buckingham Palace across Salisbury Plain and finally along the sandy beaches of the Bahamas.

Amidst this turmoil, two scientists named Foot (Victor Spinetti) and Algernon (Roy Kinnear) have become involved, being called in by the Government to try and remove the ring from Ringo’s finger. Algernon is a harmless fool, however, Foot is a megalomaniac and sees the ring as a means to “rule the world!” and is prepared to go to extremes to get his hands on the ring.  Following up the rear is dapper Scotland Yard Police Superintendent (Patrick Cargill).

Fortunately, all attempts to remove this religious artifact from Ringo’s hand are thwarted at every turn often by John, Paul and George. This wild chase eventually culminates on a beach in the Bahamas when the ring suddenly falls off Ringo’s finger and those in pursuit are suddenly afraid to pick it up in case they themselves become splattered with red paint and selected as the sacrificial victim!

PHANTOM SHIP – The DVD Review

Phantom Ship A-560

Review by Sam Moffitt

I grew up a monster kid in the 1960s. I tried to watch any movie with Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff, Vincent Price, Lon Chaney or Peter Lorre, whether the movie was horror or not, I loved all these actors. But Bela Lugosi has always had a special place in my heart and I’ve made every effort to see all his films. Phantom ship was one title that has eluded me for years, until now.

Courtesy of Image Entertainment and Netflix I finally caught up with Phantom Ship, also known as The Mystery of The Mary Celeste. Was it worth the wait and worth seeing? Yes and no, depending on how you feel about Lugosi. This is one film that allowed Lugosi room to move and create a character not really related to horror movies and it show cases just how good an actor he really was. Watching it you wish the whole movie were good enough to really be a lost classic.

Phantom Ship is a “what if?” movie that tries to explain the Mary (or Marie) Celeste maritime mystery. A case that is still unsolved, and at this date likely never will be. The Mary Celeste was found adrift at sea with no one aboard on December 4, 1872, no evidence of foul play, all the cargo intact, no damage to the ship, nothing in the captain’s log pointing to a solution as to what happened. Even more creepy, food was on the stove, coffee was sitting in cups, everything looked as if the whole crew and passengers vanished into thin air, which is basically what happened.

Phantom Ship B-560

Phantom Ship speculates that a murderer was on board and in the manner of Agatha Christie’s Ten Little Indians, one character after another is killed or vanishes. This is one movie I don’t want to give any spoilers on but Lugosi’s character is the last one you would suspect of being responsible.

Phantom Ship is one of Hammer Film’s first productions but I did not see their name in the credits. Also from postings on the web apparently this is not a complete print. The original film opened and closed with a courtroom scene, a maritime law investigation into what happened, which the film then presents a “solution” as to what may have occurred.

Lugosi is so good it breaks my heart to report the rest of the actors can’t keep up with him. I’ve seen lots of British movies from the 30s and 40s and I recognized very few of the other actors. Dennis Hoey was a regular in British movies of all kinds and Gibson Gowland, the now forgotten star of Eric Von Stroheim’s Greed has a small part. The other actors look like amateurs in any scene with Lugosi.

© Copyright 2010 CorbisCorporation

Bela plays a one armed but otherwise able bodied seaman who has seen better days and really needs a sea going billet. Bela does what we expect of professional actors, then and now, he builds a believable character in front of our eyes, someone who might actually exist in the real world and who appears, by turns, pathetic, heart breaking, heroic (yes I said heroic, Bela unexpectedly saves the only woman in the cast from rape and then behaves in a totally unexpected manner), exhausted, kind, forlorn and lonely and finally terrified and terrifying. It is a full bodied performance from one of the most underrated actors in history and what a shame the other players in Phantom Ship can never seem to get to his level. If they had it would be the lost classic it has occasionally been described as.

Partly filmed on a real sailing vessel Phantom Ship has the raw, primitive look of independent films from that era, think Mascot serials or Monogram Westerns, PRC mysteries. Some of the ship board scenes are studio bound with the back projection also common in that era. The sound quality is rough but understandable. At one point, apparently, the soundtrack was lost or damaged after Lugosi left the production. Somebody does a terrible Lugosi imitation in one scene that is over dubbed. Pitiful, I have heard 12 year old kids do a better Lugosi.

Part of the charm of Phantom Ship for me is the singing of authentic sailor’s sea chanties, some of which are rather bawdy. The movie goes into some detail about every day ship board life, having lived on a ship I found this fascinating. The movie only runs a little over an hour so it is not a grueling ordeal or a really bad movie, just a programmer picture common in that era.

Phantom Ship-E-560

Finally the main reason to see Phantom Ship, the only reason really, is good old Bela. To a lot of people Lugosi was some kind of joke, most film goers now only know of him through Tim Burton’s Ed Wood movie, if they know him at all. What a shame. Everyone knows he was hooked on morphine but most people don’t know why. He was a veteran of World War One. Being a loyal Hungarian he served in the Austro-Hungarian Army and was wounded, many veteran’s of that war came home hooked on opiate pain killers. Here was a man who won a place in the Hungarian National Theater at the age of 17 and often played to standing room only audiences. Even Karloff admitted that Bela had more stage experience and was one of the best actors he had ever worked with.

Phantom Ship D-560

Phantom Ship is proof of Bela’s talent, in some scenes yes, he goes over the top, he was famous for that. In other scenes while the other actors scream and shout Bela sits quietly, regarding the other actors the way a rooster regards a king snake, and says nothing. Without moving a muscle or opening his mouth Bela commands the screen, owns the movie and puts the whole show in his hip pocket and walks away with it.
In 1958 Boris Karloff was honored on the show This Is Your Life, Ralph Edward’s series that honored performers of all kinds. These shows are on dvd I highly recommend them. Boris has a wonderful reunion with Jack Pierce, the makeup man for the Universal Frankenstein films. Boris pays tribute to Pierce by naming him the best makeup man in the world. Bela died in 1955, how sweet it would have been to hear that voice, from off camera saying “we made 6 pictures together Boris, I stole every scene we were in, but only because you let me!” What would Boris have said to, or about, Bela on live television? Could it have been a happy reunion? Bela would have still been working for Ed Wood, if at all, Boris stayed working right up until the end. We can only speculate, but finally here is a once lost Lugosi film that proves his talent. For Lugosi fans Phantom Ship is a must, and if you are not a Lugosi fan, why are you reading this?

Image dvd has no special features at all, only chapter access and a very primitive menu.

Cast members Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Benjamin Bratt, Miranda Cosgrove, Steve Coogan, Ken Jeong, Elsie Fisher, Dana Gaier, Moises Arias, and Nasim Pedrad greeted fans who waited to catch a glimpse of the stars before heading into the Gibson Amphitheatre to watch the film.

Carell and Wiig recently appeared on The Graham Norton Show, which will air here in the U.S. on BBC America, Saturday, June 27.

Also on the yellow carpet were DESPICABLE ME 2 directors Chris Renaud & Pierre Coffin along with producers Chris Meledandri and Janet Healy.

Up until yesterday, many of the Minions had gone missing, but a few did manage to show up for Saturday’s big show. However, Universal Pictures is still looking for help to find the rest before the film opens on July 3rd.

Gru’s loyal yellow, gibberish-speaking Minions love causing mischief and mayhem almost as much as they love bananas.  They are easily distracted and can be unpredictable, curious and subversively sweet.  They are extremely competitive with each other.  This can lead to sudden slap fights, but if someone from the outside tries to harm them or Gru’s family, they become fiercely protective.  Now, someone or something has been making them vanish…

By searching for the Minions across the NBCUniversal family of websites – lasting until June 30 – fans may win any number of despicable prizes.  Every day, a new missing Minion will be revealed at www.missingminions.com, along with the NBCUniversal partner website where he may be found.  Audiences are asked to visit the specific partner site and search for the missing Minion.  To rescue him and enter the drawing for the grand prize, all they must do is click!

For each Minion found, registered users will receive an entry into a grand-prize sweepstakes for a trip for four to Universal Orlando Resort.  Daily instant-win prizes of Fandango Movie Cash – good for tickets to see DESPICABLE ME 2 in theaters – are also available for lucky fans with keen eyes.

More than 21 NBCUniversal sites are participating in the promotion. Visit www.missingminions.com to find out more and start the search for a missing Minion today.

Now that the ever-entrepreneurial Gru has left behind a life of super crime to raise Margo (MIRANDA COSGROVE of television’s iCarly), Edith (DANA GAIER of Bullied) and Agnes (ELSIE FISHER of television’s Masha and the Bear), Gru, Dr. Nefario (RUSSELL BRAND of Get Him to the Greek, Hop) and the Minions have some free time on their hands. But as he starts to adjust to his role as a suburban family man, an ultra-secret organization dedicated to fighting evil around the globe comes knocking.

Now, it’s up to Gru and his new partner, Lucy Wilde (KRISTEN WIIG of Bridesmaids, TV’s Saturday Night Live), to discover who is responsible for a spectacular crime and bring him to justice. After all, it takes the world’s greatest ex-villain to catch the one vying to take his place…

Joining the returning cast for DESPICABLE ME 2 are KEN JEONG (The Hangover trilogy, television’s Community) as Floyd Eagle-san, proprietor of the local hair replacement club for men and key suspect in the most despicable crime to hit the globe since Gru departed the game; STEVE COOGAN (Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, Tropic Thunder) as Silas Ramsbottom, Lucy’s boss in the Anti-Villain League and a superspy whose surname offers an endless source of amusement to the Minions; MOISES ARIAS (Hannah Montana, The Secret World of Arrietty) as Antonio, the oh-so-suave object of Margo’s girlhood affection (and Gru’s supreme annoyance); and BENJAMIN BRATT (Miss Congeniality, Snitch) as Eduardo Perez, Antonio’s father, owner of Salsa & Salsa restaurant, and the man who may or may not be the most macho super-villain who ever villained, El Macho.

DESPICABLE ME 2 marks a reunion for the inaugural film’s two directors – Oscar® nominee CHRIS RENAUD (Annie Award-winning short No Time for Nuts, Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax) & PIERRE COFFIN (upcoming Minions) –  who brought the first adventure to vibrant and unexpected life.

Scary New Photos From THE CONJURING Are Here

THE CONJURING

In his review from the Los Angeles Film Festival screening on Friday (June 21), Variety critic Justin Chang called it, “the sort of relentless, expertly tricked-out scarefest that leaves one feeling happily drained.” Judging by the reactions on Twitter, it was probably a restless sleep for many after the LA Film Fest showing of THE CONJURING.

Discover why truth is stranger than fiction in these frightening images from Director James Wan’s latest movie – due in the theaters next month.

The film reveals the real horrors lurking within a secluded centuries-old farmhouse in the seemingly peaceful countryside of Harrisville, Rhode Island, bought in 1970 by Carolyn and Roger Perron. However, the couple and their five daughters soon find themselves directly in the path of extreme, yet indefinable, danger. James Wan (twitter: @creepypuppet), who had known of the couple’s work prior to taking the directing reins of THE CONJURING says, “I’ve always been a big fan of the Warrens. I really admire them. They pioneered the modern-day style of ghost hunting with technical equipment, capturing evidence on film and audiotape. Since they’ve inspired so many stories, books and films, it was cool to actually make a movie where who they are is as much the focus as the family’s home they are investigating.”

Lorraine Warren, now in her eighties, still recalls all too well the physical environment of the real house where a sinister multitude had begun an infestation all those years ago. She attests, “When I walked inside, I immediately knew it was haunted. There’s a feeling that comes over you, almost like a veil, it draws your energy because the entity needs it in order to manifest; the only way to get that energy is from you. It was really heavy in that house and being on the set brought all that back. It was uncanny. I’m very fond of James. He wanted to get everything right, and I’m excited about the film.”

Roger Perron and his daughters had the opportunity to visit the set and agree that it stirred intense memories, starting with the fateful day they moved to the farm. Andrea, the eldest, remarks, “I was absolutely confident that James, the cast and the whole team authentically captured the essence of that house and what happened to us, which is no small feat. All that we hoped for has come to fruition. It is as though they had a key to our emotions, releasing what we experienced, recreating it on screen.” In fact, it was all too real for Carolyn, the wife and mother who lived through the terror more than three decades ago.

She would not attend filming for that very reason, admitting, “I didn’t go, just like I never, ever went back to the farm. I didn’t want the memories – or the thing that so threatened me in the house – to be able to touch me.” However, keeping her distance was perhaps not enough to protect her. One afternoon, while her family was at the location set that mirrored the feel of their former residence, an eerie and inexplicable wind whipped up to encircle them, though the trees remained perfectly still.

As technicians steadied the gear there in North Carolina, miles away in Atlanta, Carolyn experienced a presence which she hadn’t felt in 30 years—suddenly tripping and suffering injuries that put her in the hospital. Shortly thereafter, the cast and crew were evacuated from their hotel because a fire broke out.

Almost no one believes these are random coincidences.

Why make a horror film like THE CONJURING? Wan says, “What I love about what I do is making someone scream, either from a thrill, or out of fear…especially when that lingering effect follows them from the theatre. And since this is a real-life story, I think knowing that evil spirits actually exist is as scary as it gets.”

From New Line Cinema comes a feature film drawn from the case files of married demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren. THE CONJURING stars Academy Award® nominee Vera Farmiga (“Up in the Air,” TV’s “Bates Motel”) and Patrick Wilson (“Insidious,”) as the Warrens, and Ron Livingston (“The Odd Life of Timothy Green”) and Lili Taylor (TV’s “Hemlock Grove”) as Roger and Carolyn Perron, residents of the house.

THE CONJURING will unleash on July 19.
