’70s Schlock at The Hi-Pointe – THE VISITOR Playing Midnights This Weekend

visitor-header-560

The guys at Destroy The Brain.com have dusted off a 1979 obscurity for their monthly Late Night Grindhouse midnight series this weekend (December 6th and 7th). THE VISITOR is a film I’m completely unfamiliar with. I do have a vague recollection of seeing the VHS box on video store shelves decades ago but I know I never watched it. Apparently, like MIAMI CONNECTION and SAMURAI COP, two other recent Late Night Grindhouse entries, THE VISITOR has developed a cult following in recent years and someone somewhere thinks it is worthy of big-screen reassessment. Its slumming cast includes Oscar winners Mel Ferrer, John Huston and St. Louis’ own Shelley Winters, as well as Glenn Ford, director Sam Peckinpah and Lance Henriksen, so I’m game.

VISITOR4

THE VISITOR was an Italian-American co-production, a mixture of horror and mysticism that ripped off several of the horror/sci-fi cycles of the ’70s (OMEN/EXORCIST/ALIEN). The plot is something about John Huston trying to save the world from a creepy little devil-child who likes to make things explode…and apparently there’s a flock of evil birds and Franco Nero who makes  an appearance as Jesus! I’m so there!

VISITOR5

A couple of quotes from IMDB regarding THE VISITOR:

“Possibly the worst film I have ever seen”

“the VERY bottom of the barrel”

St. Louis filmgoers will have a chance to judge for themselves when THE VISITOR screens in all of its big-screen glory this weekend as part of the Destroy the Brain monthly Late Night Grindhouse film series. It will be shown at St. Louis’ fabulous Hi-Pointe Theater (1005 McCausland Avenue) this Friday and Saturday (December 6th and 7th). The pre-show begins at 11:30 and admission is $7.

Actor Tony Musante Dead at 77

musante-headre

He starred in Dario Argento’s first Giallo (THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE), played a homicidal homosexual opposite Sinatra in THE DETECTIVE, was ‘Uncle Pete’ in THE POPE OF GREENWICH VILLAGE, and even starred in a couple of fine Spaghetti Westerns. I  liked actor Tony Musante who always turned in interesting performances, especially during the roguish bad-boy early phase of his career. He was especially memorable in THE INCIDENT (1967) as a young tough who terrorizes late-night passengers on a New York City train. Musante died last Tuesday in Manhattan of a hemorrhage while recovering from surgery. He was 77.

From The New York Times:

Tony Musante, a rugged-looking American actor who was seen on television, in films and on stage in the United States and Europe for over 50 years but who was probably best known for a TV series he left after one season, died on Tuesday in Manhattan…….

THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG

THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG continues the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield, on an epic quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain and the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor.

Having survived the beginning of their unexpected journey, the Company continues East, encountering along the way the skin-changer Beorn and a swarm of giant Spiders in the treacherous forest of Mirkwood.

After escaping capture by the dangerous Wood-elves, the Dwarves journey to Lake-town, and finally to the Lonely Mountain itself, where they must face the greatest danger of all – a creature more terrifying than any other; one which will test not only the depth of their courage but the limits of their friendship and the wisdom of the journey itself – the Dragon Smaug.

As movie fans await the imminent release of the second film of THE HOBBIT Trilogy – and another epic dose of Middle-earth landscapes – New Zealand has taken a cue from Hollywood by unveiling a giant pop-up book of New Zealand in Los Angeles.

The country that provided the epic scenery that backdrops THE HOBBIT Trilogy movies has installed the world’s largest pop-up book – occupying an area roughly the size of two tennis courts and 50 feet high – in the grounds of the Beverly Hilton hotel, that shows how film fantasy becomes reality for visitors to New Zealand.

TOURISM NEW ZEALAND

Actor Martin Freeman (Bilbo Baggins), at the Laketown set in the giant pop-up book of New Zealand in Los Angeles.

The pop-up book of New Zealand is on site for five days coinciding with the Hollywood world premiere of THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG – produced and directed by acclaimed Kiwi film-maker Sir Peter Jackson. It is divided into four sets representing new filming locations from the film – Hidden Bay (Turoa, Ohakune), Forest River (Pelorus River, Marlborough) Lake-town (Lake Pukaki, Mt Cook), and Beorn’s House (Paradise, Queenstown).

With original pieces of the actual movie sets and living features of the real landscapes, the pop-up book employs multi-media production techniques and film-making wizardry to show how the film fantasy is firmly attached to the real life Middle-earth landscapes of New Zealand.

Guests will literally step into the giant book and take a unique journey through four of the principal filming locations for the Trilogy, combining the actuality of the book, and the magic of the movies with the reality of the Middle-earth locations.

Cast members of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug on the New Zealand pop-up book: Aidan Turner, Evangeline Lily, Richard Armitage, Peter Jackson, Martin Freeman, Luke Evans, Dean O’Gorman.

Authentic props used for the pop-up book of New Zealand include the giant wooden armchair from Beorn’s house, two-level waterside houses and a boat from Lake-town and the gigantic brooding bust of the dwarf king Thror that stood over the back entrance to Lonely Mountain.

Access to the pop-up book of New Zealand will be reserved for a series of invitation-only events, but a select group of lucky film fans will have the chance to browse the pages as part of a special public tour this Wednesday.

Jackson’s epic Tolkien-inspired productions of the LORD OF THE RINGS and THE HOBBIT Trilogies have created a legendary fan following and been at the source, over the past decade, of a film tourism phenomenon for his home country New Zealand.

THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG will be in theaters worldwide on December 13, 2013.

HOURS premiered at the 2013 SXSW Film Conference & Festival, receiving very positive reviews for both the film and Walker’s performance.

HOURS / Director Eric Heisserer

Born September 12, 1973, Paul Walker has managed a balance of successful box-office films, dramatic roles and documentaries to elevate his leap to leading-man status on the big screen.

Among Walker’s upcoming projects is the action crime-drama BRICK MANSIONS, about an undercover cop trying to take down a ruthless crime lord. The film began production in May in Montreal and was set to be released by Relativity Media next year.

Walker has displayed his versatility by continuously transforming on-screen. We saw him as a soldier in Clint Eastwood’s World War II drama FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS, for Paramount Pictures in 2006. That same year, he starred in Disney’s box-office hit EIGHT BELOW, directed by Frank Marshall, portraying Jerry Shepard, a lead research scientist who was forced to abandon his team of sled dogs. Walker previously co-starred alongside Matt Dillon and Hayden Christensen in Screen Gems’ crime-action movie TAKERS.

In RUNNING SCARED, a thriller written and directed by Wayne Kramer (The Cooler), Walker starred with Vera Farmiga. He portrayed a desperate father trying to protect his son after a tangle-up with the mob in a cop shooting. Walker starred opposite Jessica Alba in the action-thriller INTO THE BLUE, for director John Stockwell. He starred alongside Susan Sarandon, Penélope Cruz, Robin Williams and Alan Arkin in Chazz Palminteri’s 2004 directorial debut, NOEL, about a group of New Yorkers who come together on Christmas Eve.

In 2003, Walker co-starred in director Richard Donner’s adaptation of Michael Crichton’s novel “Timeline” and starred in John Singleton’s 2 FAST 2 FURIOUS, the sequel to THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS, which grossed more than $127 million at the box office. In 2001, Walker starred opposite Steve Zahn and Leelee Sobieski in 20th Century Fox’s critically praised thriller JOY RIDE, which was directed by John Dahl.

Walker’s additional credits include the box-office hit THE SKULLS, directed by Rob Cohen; the football dramedy VARSITY BLUES; the critically acclaimed film PLEASANTVILLE, from writer/director Gary Ross; Miramax’s SHE’S ALL THAT; BROKEDOWN PALACE; and THE DEATH and LIFE OF BOBBY Z.

In November 2009, Walker was seen on National Geographic Channel’s Expedition Great White, a documentary devoted to exploring the dangers of one of nature’s most challenging and perilous creatures. Walker teamed up with marine biologists to journey off the coast of Baja California, in order to track how these SUV-sized predators live.

FROZEN – The Review

frozen520e61c7bae80

Don’t let the name fool you… Disney’s FROZEN will warm your heart.

Anna and Elsa are the closest of sisters until a childhood accident drives them apart. See, Elsa is not like other children. She has the ability to freeze things, and to manipulate ice. The only problem is, she hasn’t quite learned to control it. Instead, she learns to hide her powers away, which also means hiding herself.

"FROZEN" (Pictured) ELSA. ©2013 Disney. All Rights Reserved.

That only works for so long… and soon she is forced out of hiding, only to accidentally freeze their kingdom in the process. Anna is now on a quest to find her icy sister and put an end to the cold. Along the way she meets some pretty interesting new friends including a mountain man named Kristoff (Jonathan Groff), and his sidekick Sven, and Olaf (Josh Gadd), a snowman that Elsa and Anna made as children who has suddenly come to life. Together, they trek through the frozen mountains on a race to save the kingdom from its eternal winter.

FROZEN is an absolute delight. Disney went back to their storytelling roots, and created an old-school fairytale that has a very classic feel, without the need to add a ton of modern twists. This film fits in with the likes of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, ALADDIN, and THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG. By watching the film, it is apparent that they really did their research when designing the kingdom of Arendelle, and it’s easy to get lost in. Animation with such an authentic feel doesn’t just happen. Instead, animators took several trips to the Fjords in Norway, and spent months studying the architecture, details, and characteristics of the area so that they could create a more believable, magical environment for their tale. It shows. The film looks stunning. It’s very easy to lose yourself in their world.

"FROZEN" (Pictured) ELSA. ©2013 Disney. All Rights Reserved.

Directors Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck strayed a bit from the tradition of having a prince come in and save the day. Instead, they chose a story centered around family, and the love of sisters. It’s nice to see strong female leads in film… especially animation. Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel do an incredible job of bringing strength and beauty to the characters of Anna and Elsa. There is a nice balance keeping the character of Elsa vulnerable, and still likable in her time of rebellion. It would have been easy to cast her as a villain. Instead, they keep the majority of the film villain free. Sure, there are a few jerks along the way, but no one that I would call an actual villain.

This film is certainly for those who love musicals. FROZEN has an incredibly strong soundtrack, and has a much more “musical theater” feel than many of the Disney animated films of the past. As much as I love the music, I could have done without the “Don’t know if I’m elated or gassy, but I’m somewhere in that zone.” in the song “For The First Time In Forever”. It took me out of the song, and had me praying that they didn’t put crass jokes in the rest of the film. It’s not that I’m uptight… I just don’t want my Disney movie full of fart jokes. Corny jokes are ok on occasion. That is what the character of Olaf is for. He is the comic relief of the film. Still, I was relieved to find that as the movie went on, they avoided that direction. Instead, they opted for songs such as “Let It Go” and “Do You Want To Build A Snowman” which are sure to bring a smile to your face, and possibly a tear to your eye!

FROZEN is sure to cast a spell on audiences. It’s a treat for the whole family!

Was Magneto Involved in The JFK Assassination? Find Out in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST Viral Marketing Campaign

free magneto

The new X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST viral marketing campaign ties Erik Lehnsherr (Young Magneto) to the JFK assassination in November 1963. In this fictional experience, Magneto was connected and implicated in a mutant plot to assassinate President John F. Kennedy, thus being a “point of contention between humans and mutants ever since.”

In a mock interview, Magneto spoke to a reporter for the first time in fifty years.

“Whoever said that was Oswald in that warehouse?” he says. His voice is low. “And whoever said the killer was a man? And whoever said I wanted Kennedy dead because my brothers and sisters were being killed?”

He sneers.

“Humans,” he says, disgusted.

So was he guilty? Watch the video below and decide at – www.TheBentBullet.com

The ultimate X-Men ensemble fights a war for the survival of the species across two time periods in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST.

The beloved characters from the original “X-Men” film trilogy join forces with their younger selves from “X-Men: First Class,” in an epic battle that must change the past — to save our future.

Starring Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult and Halle Berry, 20th Century Fox will release the action adventure in theaters on May 23, 2014.
