Thomas Edison’s FRANKENSTEIN Screening in St. Louis Feb. 6th – A look Back at 1910

1910-HEADER

FRANKENSTEIN, starring Boris Karloff and directed by James Whale in 1931, is usually referred to as the ‘original’ movie version of Mary Shelly’s 1818 novel. It will be screened in its restored Blu-ray format on February 6th at Schlafly Bottleworks in St. Louis so movie buffs will have the chance to see this classic again on the big screen. But, as any real horror movie buff knows, the Karloff/Whale version of FRANKENSTEIN was not the first time Shelly’s story was filmed. Inventor Thomas Edison filmed his own take 21 years earlier. Edison’s 1910 FRANKENSTEIN only runs 14 minutes and it will be screened after the Karloff version at Schlafly on February 6th.

The story behind the first FRANKENSTEIN is a fascinating one. Thomas Edison had been the leading pioneer of the first kinetoscopes, an early motion picture viewing device, and then projected motion pictures. His FRANKENSTEIN was filmed in 1910 at Edison Motion Picture Studios located in the Bronx, New York, one of several dozen movies the studio produced that year. The studio was built between 1906 and 1907 in response to the growing demand for films.

1910-1

Here’s how the March 15, 1910 edition of The Edison Kinetogram, the catalog that the Edison Company would send to distributors to hype their new films, described FRANKENSTEIN:

“To those familiar with Mrs. Shelly’s story it will be evident that we have carefully omitted anything which might be any possibility shock any portion of the audience. In making the film the Edison Co. has carefully tried to eliminate all actual repulsive situations and to concentrate its endeavors upon the mystic and psychological problems that are to be found in this weird tale. Wherever, therefore, the film differs from the original story it is purely with the idea of eliminating what would be repulsive to a moving picture audience. To those familiar with Mrs. Wherever, therefore, the film differs from the original story it is purely with the idea of eliminating what would be repulsive to a moving picture audience.”

The part of the monster in the 1910 FRANKENSTEIN was played by actor Charles Ogle. He joined the Edison Stock Company Players in 1909 and had portrayed Scrooge in a 1910 Edison production of A CHRISTMAS CAROL and George Washington in a series of films on the history of the United States. Since actors at the time were responsible for their own wardrobe and makeup, it was likely Ogle one who developed the monster’s wild-eyed, nightmarish appearance, with its shrieking grimace, straw-like hair and clawed hands. FRANKENSTEIN premiered on Friday, March 18, 1910, a mere two months after it had finished shooting (such a quick turnaround was not uncommon at the time). The film was well-received by critics.

1910-2

The New York Dramatic Mirror wrote:

“This deeply impressive story makes a powerful film subject, and the Edison players have handled it with effective expression and skill.”

However, FRANKENSTEIN did not find an audience in 1910. There are several possible reasons that may have contributed to its box-office failure. FRANKENSTEIN was the first horror movie and audiences unaccustomed to such a weird story may not have known what to make of it. Also, movies were already becoming more sophisticated. Directors were using close-ups and editing within scenes so it’s possible that audiences found director James Dawley’s stagey wide shots to be old fashioned. Or perhaps audiences were offended by the blasphemous content of the film with its theme of man creating man, especially during the creation scene, one where Dr. Frankenstein’s success is more through alchemy than science. Whatever the reason, FRANKENSTEIN quickly faded from the public’s minds. In those days, Edison Studios would only strike a few dozen prints of each of their films, which would then be sent out for distribution. After the films had circulated for a few months, they were returned where they were stripped for their silver content. It’s hard to comprehend today but films in the early silent days were considered a quickly disposable medium and no thought was given to preserving them after their initial money making run. Film then was made with a chemically unstable silver nitrate that deteriorated and even spontaneously combusted if not stored correctly. It is for these reasons that it is estimated between eighty and ninety percent of all silent films are irretrievably lost.

1910-7

Film preservationist Robert A. Harris has said: “Most of the early films did not survive because of wholesale junking by the studios. There was no thought of ever saving these films. They simply needed vault space and the materials were expensive to house.”

1910-4

Edison’s 1910 FRANKENSTEIN was for many decades though lost with not as much as a single still of its production surviving. In1963 a film historian discovered the March 15, 1910 edition of the aforementioned The Edison Kinetogram with its picture of Charles Ogle in full Frankenstein make up on its cover in the Edison archives in New Jersey. That photo was published in numerous books and magazines, including Famous Monsters of Filmland, sparking a renewed interest among horror film buffs. In 1980, the American Film Institute declared the 1910 production of FRANKENSTEIN to be one of the top ten most “Culturally and historically significant lost films.”

1910-6

Enter Wisconsin-based film collector Alois Dettlaff. When Detlaff heard the of the film’s placement on the AFI’s list, he announced, to the shock of the film world, that he indeed was in possession of a print of the 1910 FRANKENSTEIN. The sole surviving print had originally belonged to his wife’s grandmother who used to screen the film and other silent shorts as part of a stage show. The film was passed down and eventually landed in the hands of Detlaff. However, Detlaff was originally stingy with his treasure. In the early ‘80s he had allowed a few minutes to be shown as part of a BBC documentary, later released to home video. These snippets would later wind up in various silent cinema video compilations without attribution or payment made to Dettlaff. Feeling slighted, Dettlaff became guarded in allowing the film to be screened. In 1986, he donated a “copyright protected” version of the film, with a copyright notice that scrolled across the center of the film making viewing difficult, to the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. Dettlaff died in 2005 and finally, in 2010, exactly 100 years after its production, BearManor Media released the film on DVD without the scrolling copyright.

1910-3

So what can one expect when finally seeing Edison’s FRANKENSTEIN? Detlaff ‘s print was in somewhat deteriorated condition, especially the first few minutes. But it is viewable and complete with intertitles and the color tints as seen in 1910. The film is accompanied by a decent synthesized music score. With a running-time of only fourteen minutes, FRANKENSTEIN is necessarily a much abbreviated version of Mary Shelley’s story, yet what remains is a lively and efficient condensation of the novel’s plot. There are some fascinating elements in the film. The special effects of the monster gradually forming before our eyes are extremely primitive by today’s standards but were unprecedented for 1910. The monster is created through chemicals in a large cauldron in a long sequence that employs puppetry and reverse motion and it is both eerie and effective. The use of mirrors is also interesting, with the monster visible in several scenes through the door-sized looking glass in Frankenstein’s bedroom, implying that the creature may be simply a reflection of its own creator.

1910-5

Thomas Edison’s 1910 FRANKENSTEIN will play on the big screen at Schlafly Bottleworks (7260 Southwest Avenue Maplewood, MO 63143) and this is the first time St. Louisans will have the opportunity to see it in a theater-type setting. It will play after the 1931 version of FRANKENSTEIN which begins at 7pm on February 6th. The 1910 version should start around 8:30.

GRAVITY’s Alfonso Cuarón Takes Home Top Honors From Directors Guild of America

GRAVITY 3D

Another Oscar pre-cursor award was handed out Saturday night.

Director Alfonso Cuarón won the DGA’s Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for GRAVITY. This top honor puts him in a good spot to win the Academy Award for Best Director on Oscar Sunday, March 2. The awards for 2013 were announced during the 66th Annual DGA Awards Dinner at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Los Angeles. Other DGA nominees were Paul Greengrass (Captain Phillips); Steve McQueen (12 Years A Slave); David O. Russell (American Hustle); and Martin Scorsese (The Wolf of Wall Street).

With just five weeks until the Oscars are announced from the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, 12 YEARS A SLAVE, which tied with GRAVITY last Saturday to earn the top award at the Producers Guild, seems to be in a three-way race with AMERICAN HUSTLE which took home the Screen Actors Guild award last weekend.

As Oscar pundit Scott Feinberg wrote in his Hollywood Reporter article “Will Weinstein’s ‘Philomena’ Benefit From Best Picture Split?”, be on the lookout for PHILOMENA and a surprise upset for Best Picture.

The DGA and PGA win for GRAVITY firmly places the film as the frontrunner, but as you can see in the most recent edition of the Gurus o’ Gold, many are predicting a split between the Best Picture and Best Director.

Upcoming awards to note: The Writer’s Guild Awards are on February 1, ACE Eddie’s (editors guild) are February 7 and the BAFTA’s (Gravity – 11 nominations, including Best Film, Outstanding British Film. 12 Years a Slave and American Hustle – ten nominations) are held on February 16.  Final voting for the 86th Academy Awards ends at 5 p.m. PT on Tuesday, February 25th.

Shoras-b116rv2

Actress Jane Lynch hosted the ceremony before an audience of more than 1,600 guests. Presenters included (in alphabetical order): Ben Affleck, Debbie Allen, DGA Secretary-Treasurer Michael Apted, DGA President Paris Barclay, Sandra Bullock, Nick Cannon, Don Cheadle, Steve Coogan, Bradley Cooper, DGA Fifth Vice President Jon Favreau, DGA Past President Taylor Hackford, Tom Hanks, Keith Jackson, Anna Kendrick, Allison Liddi-Brown, Sarah Paulson, Rob Reiner, and Kerry Washington.

The DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film has traditionally been a near perfect barometer for the Best Director Academy Award.

Only seven times since in the DGA awards’ 65 year history, has the DGA Award winner not won the Academy Award:

1968: Anthony Harvey won the DGA Award for The Lion in Winter while Carol Reed took home the Oscar® for Oliver!. 1972: Francis Ford Coppola received the DGA’s nod for The Godfather while the Academy selected Bob Fosse for Cabaret. 1985: Steven Spielberg received his first DGA Award for The Color Purple while the Oscar® went to Sydney Pollack for Out of Africa. 1995: Ron Howard was chosen by the DGA for his direction of Apollo 13 while Academy voters cited Mel Gibson for Braveheart. In 2001 Ang Lee took home the DGA Award for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, while the Oscar® went to Steven Soderbergh for Traffic. In 2003 Roman Polanski received the Academy Award for The Pianist, but the DGA Award went to Rob Marshall for Chicago. 2012: Ben Affleck won the DGA Award for Argo, while the Academy chose Ang Lee for Life of Pi.

In addition to Cuaron’s win last night, Steven Soderbergh won for Best Television/Mini-series for the Liberace biopic BEHIND THE CANDELABRA. This was Soderbergh’s first DGA Award and third nomination. He was also the recipient of this year’s Robert B. Aldrich Service Award for extraordinary service to the DGA and its membership.

Female filmmaker Jehane Noujaim took home the DGA Documentary award for THE SQUARE. This was her second DGA Award and third nomination. She won the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentary for Startup.com in 2001 (together with Chris Hegedus) and was also nominated in this category in 2004 for Control Room.

Sir Ben Kingsley, Tom Hiddleston & Mark Strong Star In Super Bowl Jaguar Spot BRITISH VILLAINS From Director Tom Hooper

jaguar_british-villains_sb-spot_talent-announcement

File this under Clever Super Bowl Ad Alert

Jaguar North America has announced the three British thespians to appear in “Rendezvous,” its 60-second television advertisement to debut during the second half of Super Bowl XLVIII, along with details of its largest-ever brand and product marketing campaign, called “British Villains,” which introduces the Jaguar F-TYPE Coupe (on sale spring, 2014).

“Rendezvous” stars Sir Ben Kingsley, Tom Hiddleston and Mark Strong, and was filmed by Oscar-winning British director, Tom Hooper, in London. It is Jaguar’s first Super Bowl TV advertisement.

Jaguar also previewed its Super Bowl spot with “The Setup,” staring Sir Ben Kingsley, during the CBS and FOX NFL Divisional Playoff games, January 11 and 12. At the end of the commercial, viewers were invited to view “The Setup” on the campaign’s dedicated landing page, www.BritishVillains.com, and use the unique hashtag, #GoodToBeBad to engage with the brand throughout the campaign.

The original score for “Rendezvous” was composed and conducted by Alexandre Desplat, who worked with Tom Hooper on The King’s Speech and recorded by The London Symphony Orchestra at the iconic Abbey Road studios.

Check out the previews below. These dashing gents could prove to be too distracting for those of us trying watch the Big Game in February.

“With ‘British Villains,’ Jaguar will present itself on the Super Bowl stage as a challenger to the usual luxury car suspects, with a unique cinematic expression of our modern British style,” said Jeff Curry, Brand Vice President, Jaguar North America. “With the three renowned actors, Sir Ben, Tom and Mark, who have all played memorable film rogues, we have brought together the best of British film to star in a major motion picture caliber campaign that addresses the simple cultural observation that Brits often play the best villains in film. This talent, coupled with the direction of Academy Award-winner director Tom Hooper, enables us to launch our campaign for the F-TYPE Coupe in a manner that captures the new spirit of the entire brand inspired by our latest sports car.”

“Jaguar is truly a beloved British brand and it’s exciting to help them make some noise as they debut in a beloved American event, the Super Bowl,” said Sir Ben Kingsley. “As for being known for playing the roles of renowned villains, I’ll have to ponder that one – I think I’m flattered?!”

The campaign creative, developed with a cinematic vision, centers around the new “Rendezvous” television commercial. In addition to the 60-second spot to air in the Super Bowl, a 30-second preview of “Rendezvous” will debut online on January 28 and run on high-profile, digital channels throughout February.

The “British Villains” campaign and its many supporting assets were produced specifically for the launch of the F-TYPE Coupe around the broadcast of the 2014 Super Bowl and builds on the momentum of Jaguar following the successful launch of the F-TYPE convertible and a 41 percent sales increase in 2013.

“British Villains” captures the premise that Brits have long made the best villains in landmark films, combining intelligence with charm, restlessness with calm, and always confident. In the world of pop culture, villains disrupt the status quo and challenge the establishment, while living one step ahead of, and better than, the pack. The campaign asks the question, ‘Have you ever noticed how in Hollywood movies, all the villains are played by Brits?’ It was filmed by Hooper in London in a creative partnership with his Smuggler Films production house.

“This is one of those jobs that can really be a lot of fun, so I was quite happy to oblige when Jaguar asked me to be a part of their first Super Bowl commercial,” said Hooper. “To work with the caliber of great actors we cast in this project is a truly special experience on its own and reflects the cinematic approach that we took in the production with Jaguar.”

jaguar_ooh_wild-posting-creative-2

SPARK44, the lead strategic communications partner for Jaguar, was responsible for the creative positioning and strategy behind the campaign, while Mindshare managed the communications planning and buying. In addition to broadcast, the multi-channel campaign will feature unique outdoor creative throughout New York City, print, digital and consumer activations hosted with a wide array of media partners, and special events in the week leading up to the Super Bowl.

During the game, Jaguar aims to be the most real-time engaged advertiser during the Super Bowl through a unique physical space called “The Loop,” developed by Mindshare, where multiple screens will monitor real-time consumer data and translate it into actionable insights, and ultimately, rapid marketing decisions, or “Adaptive Marketing.”

“The Loop” is the first real-time marketing tool to impact paid media – whereby media dollars can be quickly shifted and redeployed to leverage opportunities uncovered by the data. Rapid, relevant and responsive, “The Loop” puts data at the center and creates a channel-agnostic, holistic approach to real-time marketing in an unprecedented manner.

Kevin Smith’s TUSK Heads to Berlin With XYZ Films

kevin smith

XYZ Films has partnered with Demarest Films and A24 on Kevin Smith’s epic new horror film, TUSK, coming aboard to handle all international sales rights.  The film, also written by Smith and born out of one of his immensely popular SModcasts, stars Justin Long, Haley Joel Osment, Genesis Rodriguez and Michael Parks.

Demarest (A MOST WANTED MAN, MACHETE KILLS) financed and produced TUSK in partnership with New York-based distributor A24 (SPRING BREAKERS, THE BLING RING), who will release it wide in the third quarter of 2014.  XYZ will be introducing the project, currently in production, to international buyers at the European Film Market in February.

TUSK is a modern-day monster movie that follows a journalist named Wallace (Long) who finds the story of a lifetime in Mr. Howe (Parks), a worldwide adventurer with amazing tales and a curious penchant for walruses.

justin long

“It’s an honor to support the work of Kevin Smith, a filmmaker we’ve revered for years. His bold and uncompromising vision for TUSK is a game-changer and one that we know will yield a memorable film that will leave audiences breathless,” says XYZ Films.
