300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE told in the breathtaking visual style of the blockbuster “300,” is a new chapter of the epic saga, which takes the action to a new battlefield—the sea.

The story pits the Greek general Themistokles against the massive invading Persian forces, ruled by the mortal-turned-god Xerxes, and led by Artemisia, the vengeful commander of the Persian navy.

Knowing his only hope of defeating the overwhelming Persian armada will be to unite all of Greece, Themistokles ultimately leads the charge that will change the course of the war.

The action adventure stars Sullivan Stapleton (“Gangster Squad”) as Themistokles and Eva Green (“Dark Shadows,” “Casino Royale”) as Artemisia. Reprising their roles from “300,” Lena Headey stars as the Spartan Queen, Gorgo; David Wenham appears as Dilios; Andrew Tiernan plays Ephialtes; Andrew Pleavin plays Daxos; and Rodrigo Santoro returns in the role of the Persian God-King, Xerxes. The main cast also includes Hans Matheson as Themistokles’ closest friend and advisor, Aeskylos; Callan Mulvey and Jack O’Connell as father and son soldiers, Scyllias and Calisto; and Igal Naor as the Persian King Darius.

The film was directed by Noam Murro, from a screenplay by Zack Snyder & Kurt Johnstad, based on the graphic novel Xerxes, by Frank Miller.

Watch 2 New Clips for Jason Bateman’s BAD WORDS

Bad Words_Photo 4_Credit Focus Features

For some of us, he’ll always be Derek Taylor on the ‘80s sitcom ‘Silver Spoons’. Jason Bateman was funnier on it, overshadowed star Ricky Schroder, and wound up with his own hilarious show – ‘It’s Your Move’.  It lasted only two seasons, but it was funnier than hell!

Now Bateman is making his directorial debut with the subversive comedy, BAD WORDS.

His film is getting ready for it’s big debut at SXSW, but not before we give you a sneak peek with 2 new clips from the film. Check them out below

Bateman stars as Guy Trilby, a 40-year old who finds a loophole in the rules of the National Quill Spelling Bee and decides to cause trouble by hijacking the competition.  Contest officials, outraged parents, and overly ambitious 8th graders are no match for Guy, as he ruthlessly crushes their dreams of victory and fame.

As a reporter attempts to discover his true motivation, Guy finds himself forging an unlikely alliance with a competitor: awkward 10-year old Chaitanya (Rohan Chand of ‘Homeland’), who is completely unfazed by Guy’s take-no-prisoners approach to life.

The movie also stars Allison Janney, Kathryn Hahn and Phillip Baker Hall.

BAD WORDS opens in select theaters March 14th and expands across the country on March 21st and March 28th.

The SIDNEY POITIER TRIBUTE Continues Thursday Night with A PIECE OF THE ACTION and LET’S DO IT AGAIN

The SIDNEY POITIER TRIBUTE Continues Thursday Night with A PIECE OF THE ACTION and LET’S DO IT AGAIN

February is Black History Month, and to help celebrate, The St. Louis Black Film Festival will be presenting a Tribute to the 86-year old Sidney Poitier at their C  lassic Black Film Festival. Lucky St. Louis movie buffs will have the opportunity to view eight vintage Sidney Poitier on the big screen. Every Thursday in February, The St. Louis Black Film Festival will be presenting two Poitier films at St Louis Cinemas Galleria (630 St Louis Galleria, Richmond Heights, MO 63117).

The SIDNEY POITIER TRIBUTE Film Festival continues this Thursday night (February 27th) with two Poitier classics; A PIECE OF THE ACTION and LET’S DO IT AGAIN

Piece_of_the_Action_

Bill Cosby and Sidney Poitier, co-stars of the comic capers UPTOWN SATURDAY NIGHT and LET’S DO IT AGAIN, teamed up again in 1975 for the socially conscious comedy-adventure A PIECE OF THE ACTION. This time out, Poitier and Cosby played Manny Durrell and Dave Anderson, Windy City con artists with a long history of cheating crooks who rip off the poor. They are blackmailed by retired cop Joshua Burke (James Earl Jones) into “giving back to the community.” Manny and Dave soon find themselves posing as career counselors for a group of surly inner-city youths at a local community center. Despite the efforts of such unruly kids as class clown Gerald (Eric Laneuville) and bitter Barbara (Sheryl Lee Ralph), Manny actually begins to take pride in the help he’s giving to his students. Soon, though, he’s forced to deal with two additional obstacles: the arrival of his girlfriend’s obnoxious parents (Gammy Burdett and Wonderful Smith) and the attentions of a local mobster (Titos Vandis) upset that he’s been had. As with his previous Cosby collaborations, Poitier directed A PIECE OF THE ACTION, whose cast also includes Denise Nicholas as a community center leader, Tracy Reed as Manny’s girlfriend, Nikki, and Ja’net DuBois as Nikki’s tipsy aunt, Nellie.

A PIECE OF THE ACTION screens at 6pm

Lets-Do-it-Again2

A pair of blue-collar buddies use hypnosis to turn a wimpy boxer into a champ in the crime comedy LET’S DO IT AGAIN, which reunited actor/director Sidney Poitier and comedian Bill Cosby, stars of the similarly themed UPTOWN SATURDAY NIGHT. Clyde Williams (Poitier) and Billy Foster (Cosby) want to help raise funds to sustain the Sons and Daughters of Shaka Lodge, their local community group. Given that Clyde was trained as a hypnotist while in the military, the pair decide to con mobster Biggie Smalls (Calvin Lockhart) by placing a high-stakes bet on a boxing match and then using hocus-pocus to transform skinny underdog Bootney Farnsworth (Jimmie Walker) into a bruiser. When Biggie finds out about their ruse, he and his thugs move in to reclaim their money, setting the stage for further laughs and sleight-of-hand. With a supporting cast that includes Denise Nicholas and Lee Chamberlin as the protagonists’ wives and Ossie Davis as an elder at their lodge, LET’S DO IT AGAIN also reunited Good Times stars Walker and John Amos to the silver screen. Cosby and Poitier would return two years later with A Piece of the Action, though Lockhart, another veteran of UPTOWN SATURDAY NIGHT, would sit out the final team-up. Hip-hop fans will note that Lockhart’s character provided one of the aliases for slain ’90s rap star Christopher Wallace, also known as the Notorious B.I.G. The soundtrack for Let’s Do It Again featured Curtis Mayfield songs performed by the the Staple Singers.

LET’S DO IT AGAIN screens at 6pm

Admission is free with AARP membership card, otherwise $10 for each movie.

There will also be a “Social Happy Hour” from 4-6 before each movie.

Shirley Temple in THE BLUE BIRD – A Look Back at 1940

Blue Bird, The)_03

Review by Sam Moffitt

I never was a fan of Shirley Temple, far from it. I do recall seeing most of her movies years ago. Back in the Sixties Channel 11, in St. Louis, used to have a Shirley Temple Theater on weekend afternoons. My sister Judy, for some reason, had to watch those Shirley Temple films. So I can recall seeing Bright Eyes, the Little Colonel, Heidi, Little Miss Marker and what have you.

To say I was not impressed would be a major understatement. Even as a young kid I realized there was a strict formula to Shirley’s movies, namely her sunny disposition and optimistic outlook would win over cranky old adults and straighten out bratty little kids, who were usually the villains, in her films, and that was about all.

bluebird2

I do recognize and respect Shirley Temple’s place in film history. She was the biggest star in the movies during the Great Depression. In ticket sales she was way ahead of even Clark Gable. And by the way, she was NOT the first child star. Check out a great documentary (I’ll review it in the future) called The Elephant in the Room, the Baby Peggy Story. The silent era had several child stars. I do respect that Shirley’s unflagging optimism helped movie audiences get through the Depression and offered hope to people who really needed it.

But when it comes to 1930s escapism I’ll take Karloff and Lugosi in the Universal horror Films, or the Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers series of films or the early screwball classics like Bringing Up Baby and The Front Page, and certainly the Marx Brothers and The Three Stooges. And as for 1930s child stars I’ll take the Little Rascals/Our Gang over Shirley Temple movies anytime.

bluebird7

But, I have to say there is at least one film Shirley made before she started to grow up that I absolutely adore, for several reasons, and that is The Blue Bird. Made as a rather obvious attempt to copy MGM’s Wizard of Oz from the year before (although why 20th Century Fox would want to copy Oz is a bit puzzling, The Wizard of Oz was not a success at the box office and ironically neither was The Blue Bird!) here is a film that lets our little Shirley play an obnoxious brat, self absorbed and more than willing to lie and cheat to get what she wants, a regular kid in other words.

Yes, Shirley is Mytyl in her first box office flop, living in a Ruratanian sort of Bavaria in black and white, just like Dorothy’s Kansas in Wizard of Oz. She seems to care for her young brother Tyltyl played by Johnny Russell and not much else. What brings her out of her selfishness is the very real possibility of her Father having to go to war and be killed.

bluebird6

The Blue Bird is based on the play by Maurice Maeterlinck and differs quite a bit from its stage origins. The framing device and the concept of Father going to war are not in the original play.

In the night while they are sleeping, brother and sister are visited by Fairy Berylune played by Jessie Ralph who sets them on the task of finding the Blue Bird of Happiness. And here the movie goes to bright, brilliant Technicolor and it is a joy to behold. For protection and companionship the family dog Tylo (played by Eddie Collins) and cat Tylette (played by Gale Sondergaard) are changed into humans, who continue to act as their animal selves. Also the family lantern is changed into a sort of Tinkerbell character, Light, played by Helen Erickson.

bluebird4

Collins is good as the family dog, (a bull dog by the way) loyal, obedient, eager to please, as you would expect. But it is Gale Sondergaard’s house cat that really puts this project over, she is wonderful acting exactly as a house cat does. Wherever the five of them go all she wants to do is eat, sleep on a couch and groom herself.

Sondergaard is so good by rights she should have had an Oscar nomination, her take on a house cat is funny, exasperating, more than a little sexy and just slightly ominous and threatening, pretty much like a real cat in other words! In fact the story makes Tylette into a nominal villain but not for long and not in any really threatening way. This is not a movie that is going to scare little kids, not even as much as Wizard of Oz is capable of.

bluebird3

In the course of their adventures they get to visit their deceased Grandparents, a kingdom where everything is luxurious, and a sort of reverse heaven where children waiting to be born are gathered and they learn they will have a baby sister soon.

Of course it ends with an “all just a dream” moment, putting it even more into Wizard of Oz territory. The Blue Bird is not quite a neglected masterpiece but it does deserve to be better known and could easily be a holiday favorite, perfect for Christmas.

bluebird8

I actually found Shirley Temple more interesting when she grew up. I’m thinking especially of That Hagen Girl with future president Ronald Reagan, a look at small town gossip ruining people’s lives. Shirley also worked in television hosting a wonderful show called Story Book Theater. These are great shows by the way and available on dvd. She also did good work in John Ford’s She Wore a Yellow Ribbon with future short lived husband John Agar. As an aside, I never heard if John Agar ever said a word about what it was like to go to bed with Shirley Temple, which makes him a class act in my book.

So I respect the fact that Shirley Temple’s films offered hope and escape to millions of people all over the world, that she went on with her life and never complained that her parents squandered the money she earned as a child star (where was the Jackie Coogan law by the way?) and that she found a calling that she was apparently good at, namely in diplomatic service. And most importantly she never had any sort of public meltdown or suffered any ill effects from her child stardom.

So I’ll say good bye now to a true Hollywood legend, please check out the Blue Bird, Shirley proved she had real acting chops by playing a child much different from any she had done previously. Or pick your own Shirley Temple film, oh my goodness, there sure a lot of them!

Since the initial awards banquet on May 16, 1929, in the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel’s Blossom Room, 2,900 statuettes have been presented.

It stands today, as it has since 1929, without peer, on the mantels of the greatest filmmakers in history.

20140223_135502

Each January, additional new golden statuettes are cast, molded, polished and buffed by R.S. Owens & Company, the Chicago-based awards specialty company retained by the Academy since 1982. The Oscar statuette is the most recognized award in the world. Its success as a symbol of achievement in filmmaking would doubtless amaze those who attended that dinner more than 80 years ago, as well as its designer, Cedric Gibbons.

Watch and listen as movie professionals, actors and officials from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences talk about what makes the Academy Awards so special and the Grandfather of all award shows.

When the first Academy Awards were handed out in 1929, movies were beginning the transition from silent pictures to talkies. The attendance was 270 and guest tickets cost $5. Since the earliest years, interest in the Academy Awards has always run high and continues to be the next day’s water cooler talk.

40 years ago, host Jack Lemmon opened the 36th Academy Awards and viewers were greeted by movie star Rock Hudson. The ceremony was held at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium on Monday, April 13, 1964. The Oscar for Best Picture went to TOM JONES with Sidney Poitier becoming the first African American to win Best Actor for LILIES OF THE FIELD.

3 DAYS TO KILL – The Review

Three Days To Kill

Costner shows us that he’s still got what it takes as a leading man in 3 DAYS TO KILL.

Ethan Renner (Kevin Costner) has finally decided to bow out of the CIA after finding out that he has a terminal illness until Vivi Delay (Amber Heard), an agent offers him an experimental life-saving cure in exchange for his participation in one last mission. Now, Ethan is balancing his time in case it does run out by getting to know his estranged daughter Zoey (Hailee Steinfeld) and hunting down a threat he knows only by name… The Wolf.

Kevin Costner still has it. Not only is he in the action scenes of this film, but his comedic timing is incredible. Going into this film, I didn’t expect much on the side of humor but I was pleasantly surprised. This film also offers a bit of heart, which I also did not expect. If you are expecting a cut-throat, hardcore CIA movie, then this is not the film for you. It’s filled with action, and has some pretty violent scenes, but all of that is balanced with a story about family, and making sure that you don’t miss out on the important things in life. Hailee Steinfeld, known best for her role in TRUE GRIT, does a wonderful job as the angsty teenager Zoey. She plays both sides, the side that is acting out because of the pain her father caused by leaving, and the side begging for his love and approval, beautifully. The only character that I wasn’t completely sold on was Vivi Delay, played by Amber Heard. Her character was more cute than charismatic. To be honest, I found her performance rather dull, and flat. Her character did sport some amazing wigs though.

M 007_MG_2257 H crop R1

Director McG manages to take a relatively implausible story, and make it interesting and fun. Ethan has two different lives, one as a CIA assassin, and the other as a man trying to make amends with his family, and they are balanced quite well. I think as critics, we tend to forget that movies are about entertainment. Sure, I’m guilty of ripping films apart when they throw things like common sense out the window, but why go to a movie, or review it if you aren’t going to give it a chance to entertain you. Having said that, this film is in no way a truthful tale, nor is it trying to boast its accuracy. You can tell that from the scenes where Vivi is driving Ethan around, whipping her expensive car in and out of traffic without even looking at the road. That part did bug me quite a bit.

If you are looking for a fun time at the movies, this is a great film to see. Kevin Costner proves that he is back and ready to kick cinematic ass!
