FURY – The Review

fury-brad-pitt

‘Fury’ is the nickname of vehicle at the center of FURY, a Sherman tank – the formidably efficient warhorse of the American army during WWII. FURY is a harrowing, tightly focused combat unit tale set during the war’s waning days that is at its best during its many bloody and intense battle sequences. The story is set during the Allies’ final ground assault on the Third Reich. Fury’s five-man crew is led by Sgt. Don “Wardaddy” Collier (Brad Pitt), a seasoned tank commander with the 2nd Armored Division who’s seen it all. In spring of 1945, Collier finds him and his crew deep in hostile Germany where, although faced with certain defeat, the Nazis intend to fight to the death. FURY opens just after the death of one of its crew. His replacement is Norman (Logan Lerman), a green, conscience-stricken clerk trained “to type 60 words a minute” (it’s never well-explained how he ends up in the tank). The rest of the team is Scripture-spouting “Bible” (Shia LaBeouf), Spanish-spouting driver “Gordo” (Michael Pena) and rapey neanderthal mechanic “Coon-Ass” (Jon Bernthal). Fury and its crew are part of a tank squadron that doesn’t seem to have any real mission aside from rolling into German villages and wiping out remaining enemy soldiers. The story’s exciting if unlikely climax has Fury broken down with several hundred marching Nazis closing in. This episodic structure mostly works, making for plenty of sweaty male bonding as well some surprises such as when a superior-powered German tank pops out of nowhere, wiping out the rest of the fleet and leaving Fury the sole survivor.

FURY is extraordinarily violent. Director David Ayer leaves nothing to the imagination regarding the brutality of war and the carnage some weapons are capable of. The battle scenes, using real vintage WWII tanks, are superbly executed, not only from a practical effects perspective, but in the way that Ayer keeps us on the edge of our seats. Less successful are the quiet stretches between the battles – scenes that don’t amount to much. There’s a prolonged dinner-table sequence that finds Collier and Norman spending some peaceful moments with a pair of surviving German women in a bombed-out town that takes a long time to go nowhere. A short-lived romance between Norman and the pretty German girl Emma (Alicia Von Rittberg) is shoehorned in for no reason but to illustrate how tragic and dehumanizing War is. The acting is fine, especially a commanding Pitt as Collier, but the characters are stereotyped to the point where you know exactly who’s doomed and in what order. As Norman, the young green recruit, Lerman is such a baby-faced innocent you just know he’ll find a way to buck the odds and survive. There’s a terrific early scene where Collier cruelly forces a stammering Norman to shoot a Nazi prisoner in the back, but this young character predictably goes from “I couldn’t shoot – they were just kids” to “Fucking Nazis!” in calculable time. Pena and Bernthal aren’t given much room to develop their characters but still manage fine, physical performances and despite a big-boy moustache, Shia LaBeouf is miscast as he always is in any movie meant to be taken seriously. I would like to have seen more about the desperate, dangerous and exacting job of manning a tank. While I did get a good sense of the camaraderie and trust among these virtual siblings I never got a feeling for the details of being in a tank crew or the sense of claustrophobia that I got with something like DAS BOOT or, even more appropriately, the outstanding but forgotten 1988 film THE BEAST starring Jason Patrick about a Russian tank crew trapped in Afghanistan.

While it may not have exceeded my high expectations, FURY is a good, old-fashioned war film and is recommended.

WAMG Talks With MICHAEL CUESTA: KILL THE MESSENGER

Kill The Messenger movie (1)

KILL THE MESSENGER, the dramatic thriller based on the true story of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Gary Webb is in theaters now, and gaining a lot of buzz.

Read Jim Batts’ review HERE.

Recently, I had the chance to sit down with director Michael Cuesta, along with a small group of press, to talk about the film. Check it out below.

Two-time Academy Award nominee Jeremy Renner (“The Bourne Legacy”) leads an all-star cast in a dramatic thriller based on the remarkable true story of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Gary Webb. Webb stumbles onto a story which leads to the shady origins of the men who started the crack epidemic on the nation’s streets…and further alleges that the CIA was aware of major dealers who were smuggling cocaine into the U.S., and using the profits to arm rebels fighting in Nicaragua. Despite warnings from drug kingpins and CIA operatives to stop his investigation, Webb keeps digging to uncover a conspiracy with explosive implications. His journey takes him from the prisons of California to the villages of Nicaragua to the highest corridors of power in Washington, D.C. – and draws the kind of attention that threatens not just his career, but his family and his life.

K72A6747.CR2

This is such a fascinating true story. At what did it come about that you wanted to tell this in film form?

MICHAEL CUESTA : From the moment I read the script. I was raw last person to come on. Jeremy [Renner] was already attached to the project as a producer and an actor. When I read it I remembered the story, but I was really taken by… he was brought down by his own kind. That, to me, was a great, tragic irony, and something that I felt was really worth talking about… that injustice. Also, his own passion. The legality. The character, or the real guy… his belief in… He believed in journalism, and getting the truth out in such a deep, personal way. Then to have that turn on you… that one thing. That euphemism. I was really taken by it.

It’s also relevant to a lot of things today. Not only to the political genre, but all kinds of businesses. Did you take that into account when you were making it? Or was it something that just kind of sat in the background?

MICHAEL CUESTA : The rabbit hole? Yeah. Of course it’s relevant. Today, as far as… some stories are too true to tell. That idea is extremely relevant as far as that… What I loved about Gary’s character, and I remember directing the scene in the movie with Jeremy, was when Michael Sheen says ‘Some stories are just too true to tell.’ and Gary just sort of laughs it off like it’s bullshit… like ‘I don’t get that. I don’t even comprehend that. ‘ That, to me was just ‘Wow!’. It takes a guy like that to continue to dig into a story like that. It really takes that person that’s a bit of an outsider, and he was an outsider. He was a David and Goliath. He was David, even though he doesn’t win. I think that’s incredibly relevant. I think what you just said about it being in this business, or in the business of Hollywood… In any business it’s relevant. The story, I think, is universal because of that. I think people have no problem getting on Jeremy’s shoulders in the movie and relating to what he does with satisfaction. You’re right with him through it.

What were some of the challenges while you were creating the film?

MICHAEL CUESTA : Challenges? I would say… The typical film logistics is like ‘Ok. The studio wants to shoot in Atlanta and this takes place in San Jose.’ or ‘I can’t go to Central America because we can’t afford it, so how do we make this look like Nicaragua?’. All of those filmmaker production-y issues are challenging, but I figure it out. That’s my job. It’s the movie makers, filmmakers job to do. The casting wasn’t that much of a challenge, I have to say. People really liked the script. Each part was very clear on how it played into the story, and I think… You’ve got Ray Liotta coming in for a couple of days, Andy Garcia coming in for 2-3 days, and Tim Blake Nelson… They all knew… Well, they probably knew that they wouldn’t be cut out of the movie because you can’t not have that scene because it’s such an important part of this guys story, and piecing the story together. I would say that that wasn’t that challenging, because we were able to get the actors. We sent the script out and they were into it.

Kill The Messenger movie (2)

Prior to making the movie, during or even now were/are there any concerns about your own safety since this goes pretty deep with the CIA and drug dealers, and naming of names?

MICHAEL CUESTA : You know, I haven’t really thought of… No. [Laughs] A lot of these people aren’t around. We did change some names. ‘Freeway’ Ricky Ross obviously is in the film, and he’s going to be at the screening tomorrow night, and he’s going to be in the Q&A with me. There’s a documentary coming out about him called CRACK IN THE SYSTEM that Mark Levin made. As far as the CIA… I guess they just ignore it. It’s so long ago. They’re not going to start sending people out. It’s only going to bring attention to it, so they just ignore it. There have been a lot of filmmakers who have been down this path. I don’t know if any filmmakers have been threatened, or anything like that, but I was never worried about it. It’s been written on. There have been books.

Did you use any other source material other than Gary’s writing to inspire the filmmaking process, or the actors?

MICHAEL CUESTA : Let’s see… The main sources were Gary’s book ‘Kill The Messenger’, Nick Schou, Peter, who wrote the script was an investigative reporter a few years back, and then went on to write scripts, and direct movies… I think he’s directing another one now. He checked into some sources. I don’t know specifically his own work beyond working off the source. I went into a lot of books, and it’s no secret that the CIA had their hand in the drug trade. It dates back to the Vietnam War, and the Afghan wars. That’s all been written about. It’s more of the story of Webb being turned on the way he was. Obviously no one knew about this one connection through these few dealers where that cook was sold wholesale to Ricky, and Ricky didn’t know where it was going. I made it a point to show that in court, and show him go [Cuesta makes a stunned face] ‘Holy shit!’. So, that’s the big, new thing that came out.

Go Behind The Scenes Of The Stephen Hawking Biopic THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING

TTOE_D04_01565.NEF

Wind back the clock with Eddie Redmayne & Felicity Jones in a new clip & behind-the-scenes footage from THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING.

Starring Eddie Redmayne (“Les Misérables”) and Felicity Jones (“The Amazing Spider-Man 2”), this is the extraordinary story of one of the world’s greatest living minds, the renowned astrophysicist Stephen Hawking, who falls deeply in love with fellow Cambridge student Jane Wilde.

Once a healthy, active young man, Hawking received an earth-shattering diagnosis at 21 years of age. With Jane fighting tirelessly by his side, Stephen embarks on his most ambitious scientific work, studying the very thing he now has precious little of – time. Together, they defy impossible odds, breaking new ground in medicine and science, and achieving more than they could ever have dreamed.

The film is based on the memoir Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen, and is directed by Academy Award winner James Marsh (“Man on Wire”).

Composer Jóhann Jóhannsson scores the film and the soundtrack will be available on November 4th on Back Lot Music.

The film boasts a beautifully poignant score by Jóhannsson depicting the ups and downs of their love story as Hawking faces a virtual death sentence from ALS. Jóhannsson’s score includes his signature blend of acoustic instruments and electronics. A keystone composer in the modern classical movement, Jóhannsson is distinguished by his ability to create soundscapes by electronically manipulating orchestral instrumentation, with an emotional range that spans from inspirational to harrowing. Jóhannsson explains, “It always involves the layers of live recordings, whether it’s orchestra or a band or solo instrument, with electronics and more soundscape-y elements which can come from various sources.”

“It’s a film about an astrophysicist, but it’s in essence a love story,” explains Jóhannsson. “The music stems in a way from the tension between the Hawking the man and Hawking the scientist. Most of the score is derived from very simple elements that are announced in the first frames of the film — a four-note piano ostinato which then slowly expands into more complex forms and appears and re-appears evolved, deconstructed and re-assembled in various renderings throughout the film.”

THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING opens in select cities starting Friday, November 7th.

Get A First Look At Winston From Disney Animation’s FEAST

FEAST

Check out this preview of Disney Animation’s FEAST.

A new short from first-time director Patrick Osborne (head of animation, “Paperman”) and Walt Disney Animation Studios, FEAST is the story of one man’s love life as seen through the eyes of his best friend and dog, Winston, and revealed bite by bite through the meals they share.

FEAST’s producer, Kristina Reed, produced 2012’s Oscar-winning short PAPERMAN.

Director Patrick Osborne, who joined Walt Disney Animation Studios in 2008 as an animator on Bolt, took part in the Studio’s Spark program – which invites artists to explore their own unique ideas in a month-long project that is presented to the Studio team. His experimental short “Pet” was a hit among his fellow Disney artists. Osborne, whose credits Disney’s 2010 feature TANGLED and 2012’s Oscar-winning short PAPERMAN, for which he served as head of animation, was later tapped as co-head of animation for the upcoming feature BIG HERO 6.

But his plans changed when he pitched the idea for FEAST as part of WDAS’ new shorts program – the project was greenlit with Osborne as director.

The short opens on Nov. 7, 2014, in front of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ BIG HERO 6.

Cameron Romero Announces ORIGINS – Prequel to NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD

unnamed

The Romero families directorial legacy continues with son following in his father’s footsteps. G. Cameron Romero (“Staunton Hill”), son of George A. Romero (“Night of the Living Dead”) announced today that he has launched his campaign on Indiegogo, for ORIGINS, the genesis story of the first Romero zombie in his father’s iconic masterpiece NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, with a goal of $150,000 for pre-production costs.

Set in the turbulent late sixties, the film tells the story of a brilliant scientist – Dr. Alan Cartwright – who strikes a deal with the military that will give him all the resources he needs to finalize his work in exchange for what he later learns is a price all mankind will have to pay.

“I feel carrying on my dad’s legacy is something that I not only want to do, but it’s something I HAVE to do,” says Cameron Romero. “because I, like all my dad’s fans, was raised on his creation.”  Producer Darrin Reed (“Lila and Eve”) said “The origin story deserves to be told by someone who passionately loves and has a unique insight into the original movie and nobody has that more than George’s own son.”

Fans can contribute to the ORIGINS campaign by visiting helptelltheorigin.com

Through rewards for contributing to the campaign, legions of fans will have the unique opportunity to participate in the making of the film by being part of a ‘brain trust’ that will be polled to help answer questions during the pre-production of the film. Other perks include items such as signed ‘legs’ and ‘arms’, the ability to visit the set, and perhaps most enticing of all – being in the film as a zombie and killed on camera.

Bloody Disgusting is featuring ORIGINS through its partnership with Indiegogo. This historical relationship marks the first time that a horror site has partnered with a crowdfunding platform.

The beginning of the ORIGIN campaign was launched with event in Los Angeles on Oct. 15 and will run for thirty days.

The campaign is already gaining support from companies such as Cold Steel, the Zombie Apocalypse Store, Dogfish Head Brewery and others that have yet to be announced.

Released in 1968 and directed by George A. Romero, the original feature is credited as being the first zombie film, which went on to spawn five Romero sequels over 40 years of cinematic history. Ripe with political commentary both on race and the Vietnam War, NIGHT OF THE LVIING DEAD has endured generation after generation and has inspired such acclaimed filmmakers as Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez. In 1999, the film was added to the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry and has been on multiple AFI Top 100 lists. It was distributed by the The Walter Reed Organization, and though the film’s copyright fell into public domain along with its zombies, the Romero name and legacy has endured.

And now with ORIGINS, the legend will continue.

Chris Hemsworth Stars In First Trailer for Ron Howard’s IN THE HEART OF THE SEA

intheheartofthesea

Watch the first trailer for Ron Howard’s action adventure IN THE HEART OF THE SEA, based on Nathaniel Philbrick’s best-selling book about the dramatic true journey of the Essex. The film is scheduled to open on March 13, 2015 in theatres and IMAX.

In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will, and an almost human sense of vengeance.

The real-life maritime disaster would inspire Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick. But that told only half the story.

IN THE HEART OF THE SEA reveals the encounter’s harrowing aftermath, as the ship’s surviving crew is pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive. Braving storms, starvation, panic and despair, the men will call into question their deepest beliefs, from the value of their lives to the morality of their trade, as their captain searches for direction on the open sea and his first mate still seeks to bring the great whale down.

hemsworth

The film stars Chris Hemsworth (“The Avengers,” “Rush”) as the vessel’s veteran first mate Owen Chase; Benjamin Walker (“Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”) as its inexperienced Captain, George Pollard; Cillian Murphy (“The Dark Knight Rises”) as second mate Matthew Joy; and Ben Whishaw (“Skyfall”) as novelist Herman Melville, whose inquiries into the event 30 years later helped bring the story to light.

Tom Holland (“The Impossible”) also stars as young seaman Tom Nickerson, and Brendan Gleeson (“Edge of Tomorrow”) as the same man, 30 years later. Spanish actor Jordi Mollà (“Riddick”) is the captain of another ship, the Archimedes, who tries to warn the Essex of what may lie ahead.

Howard directed from a screenplay by Charles Leavitt (“Blood Diamond”), story by Charles Leavitt and Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver (“Rise of the Planet of the Apes”), based on the book In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex by Nathaniel Philbrick, winner of the 2000 National Book Award for Nonfiction.

The behind-the-scenes creative team includes Oscar-winning director of photography Anthony Dod Mantle (“Slumdog Millionaire,” “Rush”); production designer Mark Tildesley (“The Fifth Estate”); Oscar-winning editors Mike Hill (“Apollo 13,” “Rush”) and Dan Hanley (“Apollo 13”); costume designer Julian Day (“Rush”) and composer Roque Baños (“Evil Dead”).

From Warner Bros. Pictures, IN THE HEART OF THE SEA has been rated PG-13 by the MPAA for intense sequences of action and peril, brief startling violence, and thematic material.

THE GREEN PRINCE – The Review

greenprince1

Review by Kathy Kaiser

Writer & Director Nadav Schirman takes on the real-life story of Mosab Hassan Yousaf. son of Sheikh Hassan Yousaf – Leader of the Hamas Organization in Israel.  As the Israelis continue to imprison Sheikh repeatedly to try to squelch their efforts against the Israeli’s  Mosab becomes rebellious wanting to work for Hamas and support his father’s regime.  When Mosab is picked up at the age of 17 for gun possession, he is also imprisoned, and is finally privy to the truth about Hamas and its incredibly cruel handling of individuals imprisoned on their behalf.

Mosab finds himself torn between his moralistic ethics towards his family, and the knowledge he now has about the Hamas organization.   The Israelis’ view Mosab’s new insight on Hamas as an opportunity to recruit him for their efforts, which are in opposition of his father’s.  Enter Israeli Intelligence handler Gonen Ben Itzhak, who convinces Mosab to work for them, in an effort to destroy the Hamas organization, which Mosab has come to loath.
As Mosab and Gonen continue their efforts to infiltrate Hamas, Mosab holds on to the belief that working for “THE ENEMY” is justified as his attempt to save the lives of many in Israel.   After working for close to a decade together, Gonen finds that Mosab has become of a friend to him, as opposed to being just another spy working for him.
When Mosab is forced into exile to save his life, he comes to the US to make a fresh start, and to write his memoir “Son of Hamas”.   Our Federal Government, and the people here who have welcomed Mosab into their community here in the US, aren’t too happy when they find out who he actually is.  When Gonen receives the news that the US is trying to deport Mosab back to Israel – which means certain death for him – Gonen travels half way away around the word to testify on his behalf, not as Mosab’s previous intelligence operative, but as HIS FRIEND in order to save his life……

Nadav Schirman tells Mosab’s story, in Mosab’s own words, as he narrates the film to bring “his story” to the big screen.  Gonan Ben Itzhak also tells his side of all the craziness too – plus they use actual footage from Hamas and the Israelis, to weave this story of intrigue, deceit and everything in between.  You will find THE GREEN PRINCE both captivating and powerful, as you feel yourself wanting to save Mosab from the perils of his life in Israel – and here too – every step of the way.   This film is full of drama and intrigue, mixed with the power of documentary film making, which brings a depth to this story that I haven’t truly experienced before.  And Schirman’s Mastery of storytelling brings each and every “chapter” of this film to life!   Take a few hours out of your busy schedule this weekend and catch THE GREEN PRINCE.  This is one true story you won’t want to miss!
