Nicholas Hoult To Star As JD Salinger In Danny Strong’s Drama REBEL IN THE RYE

JACK THE GIANT SLAYER

BLOOM is handling international sales on Danny Strong’s drama REBEL IN THE RYE which will star Nicholas Hoult (MAD MAX: FURY ROAD, X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, EQUALS) as legendary author JD Salinger. Written and directed by Strong, the screenplay was adapted from the Kenneth Slawenski biography, JD Salinger: A Life.  Black Label Media is financing with Molly Smith, Trent Luckinbill and Thad Luckinbill producing alongside Academy Award winner Bruce Cohen (AMERICAN BEAUTY, SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK, MILK), Jason Shuman, and Danny Strong. BLOOM will introduce to foreign buyers at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival, while CAA is representing the North American rights.

REBEL IN THE RYE takes us on a journey into the life and mind of the legendary and secretive author and tells the story of the birth of The Catcher in the Rye. As the author who captivated a generation, JD Salinger soared to the heights of the literary world but left it all behind for a life of seclusion. Through his rebellious youth, the bloody front lines of World War 2, enduring great love and terrible loss, a life of rejection to the pages of The New Yorker, and the PTSD-fueled writer’s block which led to a spiritual awakening.

BLOOM’s Alex Walton said, “The Catcher in the Rye is a classic coming of age story which continues to make a significant impression six generations later. The world has long been fascinated with JD Salinger, who the talented Nicholas Hoult will bring to life, in this enigmatic role.”

Strong is known best for creating the hit FOX show “Empire,” in which he has written and directed multiple episodes of the ratings and pop culture phenomenon. In addition he has written the screenplays for THE BUTLER, THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY – PART 1, THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY – PART 2, and the HBO Films RECOUNT and GAME CHANGE.  He has won a Golden Globe, two Emmys, two Writer’s Guild Awards and a Peabody.

Hoult is represented by UTA, 42 and Felker Toczek.

Horror Director Wes Craven Dead at 76

Wes__07-2smaller_crop

The man who gave us Freddy Krueger is gone! One of the great, name-above-the title horror maestros of the ‘70s and ‘80s has died. Wes Craven was a huge name in the horror biz – his A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET in ’84 was an influential shocker, spawning many sequels and rip-offs. He followed that up with the first three SCREAM films. He was such a box-office sure-thing, he was the reigns to a Meryl Streep Oscar-baiter with 1999’s MUSIC OF THE HEART. But Craven’s heart was always in horror: THE HILLS HAVE EYES, THE SWAMP THING, THE SERPENT AND THE RAINBOW, and THE PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS were among his many popular films. My favorite remains his first, THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT, a still-terrifying look at sadism and savagery that was decades ahead of its time. Wes Craven was 76 and had suffered from brain cancer.

From The Hollywood Reporter:

“Wes Craven, the famed writer-director of horror films known for the Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream movies, died Sunday after a battle with brain cancer. He was 76.Craven, whose iconic Freddy Krueger character horrified viewers for years, died at his home in Los Angeles, his family announced. Craven claimed to have gotten the idea for Elm Street when living next to a cemetery on a street of that name when growing up in the suburbs of Cleveland. His five Nightmare on Elm Street films were released from 1984-89. Similarly, Craven’s Scream series was a box-office sensation. In those scare-’em-ups, he spoofed the teen horror genre. The movies frequently referenced other horror movies. Craven’s first feature film was The Last House of the Left, which he wrote, directed and edited in 1972……”

I Got Chills! GREASE Sing-a-Long – Midnights This Weekend at The Moolah

grease-header
“Why, this car is Auto-matic. Its System-matic. Its Hyyyyydro-matic. Why, its Greased Lightning!”

GREASE (the Sing-a-Long version) screens midnights this weekend (September 4th and 5th) at The Moolah Theater (3821 Lindell Blvd, St. Louis, MO). Admission is only $5

greasemaxresdefault

In 1978 John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John starred in GREASE, a ’70s version of a’50s musical. It was a huge hit and coming off the heels of his Oscar-nominated turn in SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER the year before, made a megastar of John Travolta (a wattage that was short-lived until his PULP FICTION comeback almost 20 years later).Olivia Newton-John came from Australia and won the hearts of music fans. “You’re The One That I Want” is the hot number from the film. The pair dressed in black. “Tell me about it, stud!” she cooed. GREASE appealed to younger generations. Male/female duos perform ‘Summer Nights’ to karaoke tracks. The film also exaggerated. The cast of GREASE was long out of high school, ranging in age from 19 to 35 (Stockard Channing’s Rizzo). Barry Gibb composed the title song, which oddly enough, is closer to disco than to rock ‘n’ roll.

grease-the-red-list

I never went and saw GREASE even though I was 16 when it came out. It looked, for decades, like a movie I wouldn’t like. Finally, about 5 or 6 years ago, they screened the sing-a-long version at The Galaxy and I saw it there. I found the film full of zeal and energy but at the same time it was kinda cheesy, with lame choreography and a sort of general cheapness to it. But the innocence and color of the 50s had been well-captured and what I found most refreshing was that there were no dark sub-plots – it’s a happy musical and not much more. The fact that this remains one of the most popular film musicals of all time I think is a testament to the songs and to John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John (and I like it when Olivia gets “slutty”). Check it out when the Sing-a-long version (that means the lyrics as burned in as subtitles on the print) plays midnights this weekend (September 4th and 5th) at The Moolah Theater (3821 Lindell Blvd, St. Louis, MO). Admission is only $5

Miyazaki’s SPIRITED AWAY Midnights This Weekend at The Tivoli

spirited-away-HEADER

“Once you do something, you never forget. Even if you can’t remember.

Hiyao Miyazaki’s SPIRITED AWAY screens this Friday and Saturday nights (September 4th and 5th) at midnight at the Tivoli Theater as part of their ‘Reel Late at the Tivoli’  Midnight series.

Spirited-Away-spirited-away-4377153-852-480

People call Hiyao Miyazaki the Japanese Disney and SPIRITED AWAY is considered one of his very best, if not his masterpiece. The film starts like a fairly typical take on Alice in Wonderland or Narnia. A girl is bought into a fantasy world and has to find her way back. But Miyazaki takes it even further. His heroine, ten year old Chihiro is a typically modern girl, upset about moving into a new home and afraid of new changes in her life. But after her parents take a detour into a strange tunnel she finds herself trapped and worst of all, her parents have been turned into pigs.

spirited-away-2

Miyazaki’s fantasy vision is quite simply jaw dropping. Strange creatures, some drawn from Japanese mythology, others just from Miyazaki’s mind, populate this world (and the bathhouse where Chihiro has to work.) There are images that stay in your mind long after the end credits have rolled: an endless landscape of water, the cherry blossom fields, a massive stink monster and an ocean-skimming ghost train.

Miyazaki’s films for Ghibli Studios have always found an audience in the U.S. and whenever one is shown at The Tivoli as part of their Reel Late at The Tivoli Midnight series, it draws enthusiastic crowds. This weekend you’ll have the chance to see SPIRITED AWAY when it returns to the big screen as part of The Tivoli’s Reel Late at The Tivoli midnight series.

The screenings are  Friday and Saturday nights (September 4th and 5th) at midnight.

WAMG Talks SINISTER 2 With Ciarán Foy, Shannyn Sossamon, James Ransone and C. Robert Cargill [Video]

4093_D31_09493_CROP1438292548-560x338

SINISTER 2 is the chilling sequel to the 2012 sleeper hit horror movie, that is in theaters now. Recently, I sat down with stars Shannyn Sossamon and James Ransone, as well as director Ciarán Foy and writer C. Robert Cargill. Check it out below!

In the aftermath of the shocking events in “Sinister,” the evil spirit of Bughuul continues to spread with frightening intensity. The new story is a scary, suspenseful race against time to save a family from falling prey to the madness, movies, and murder conjured by Bughuul and his foot soldiers, the ghost kids.9-year-old twins Dylan and Zach Collins (portrayed by real-life brothers Robert and Dartanian Sloan) have been spirited away by their mother Courtney (Shannyn Sossamon of “Wayward Pines”) to a rural house in Illinois.

The home and property are just isolated enough to evade Courtney’s estranged husband Clint (Lea Coco), who has abused her and Dylan. This protective mother is unaware that the house itself is marked for death…

…but Ex-Deputy So & So (James Ransone, reprising his “Sinister” role), now a private investigator, has deduced that the family’s hideout is the next manifestation spot for Bughuul. Determined to avenge the tragedy he was privy to while on the police force, So & So journeys to the rural residence, intending to burn it to the ground and thereby end Bughuul’s chain of death.

4093_D15_04238_CROP1438292541-560x373

Finding Courtney and the twins there, he realizes that they are in danger from Clint and that he must step in to help them before he can implement a plan of attack against Bughuul.

What neither Courtney nor So & So are aware of is how the ghost kids have already been unsettling Dylan with their disturbing “home movies,” each more sinister than the last.

SINISTER 2 is in theaters now

Win Tickets To September Retro Night Of MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL Thursday, September 3

monty-python-and-the-holy-grail-movie-poster-1975

B&B Wildwood Theatre is having their SEPTEMBER RETRO NIGHT on Thursday, September 3rd. They are showing the classic film, MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL. Shows are at 4pm & 7pm.

The screenplay was a joyous romp through set pieces that sent up the serious, mythic characters at its center. As King Arthur (Graham Chapman) rounds up the gallant Knights of the Round Table to ride to Camelot, he must contend with subjects who are politically unfazed by his divinely-dispensed authority. He must also wield his sword against the Black Knight (John Cleese), a fearsome opponent whose gradual dismemberment fails to quell his desire to fight.

After turning away from Camelot (“It is a silly place,” he says despairingly), Arthur sees a miraculous vision of God in the clouds above, who sets forth a task for his knights: find the Holy Grail. (“Good idea, O Lord.” ” ‘COURSE it’s a good idea!”)

After a disastrous rout at a castle full of taunting French knights, Arthur’s band separates in pursuit of the Grail. Sir Lancelot (Cleese) slays a good-sized portion of a wedding party, thinking he is rescuing a damsel in distress; Sir Robin (Eric Idle) escapes an argumentative three-headed knight; Arthur and Sir Bedevere (Terry Jones), meanwhile, are confronted by the diabolical leader of the Knights Who Say ‘Ni’ (Michael Palin), who threatens their lives unless they acquire shrubbery.

After regrouping, the knights encounter Tim the Enchanter (Cleese), who tells them the last known location of the Grail may be revealed only once they have battled a terrifying killer rabbit (puppet). The film’s climactic battle scene, shot against the beautifully austere backdrop of Castle Stalker, ends – for Arthur – on an unregal, embarrassing note.

Tickets are only $5!!! Get yours today at bbtheatres.com

WAMG is giving away free pass vouchers for the show to 5 lucky readers.

Watch The Uplifting Trailer For HE NAMED ME MALALA

prodshots-16 copy.jpg

“One child, one teacher, one book and one pen can change the world.” – Malala

Opening in select theaters on Friday, October 2nd, check out the second trailer for Fox Searchlight Pictures’ HE NAMED ME MALALA. Her story uplifts the spirit and is a must-see this fall.

HE NAMED ME MALALA is an intimate portrait of Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Malala Yousafzai, who was targeted by the Taliban and severely wounded by a gunshot when returning home on her school bus in Pakistan’s Swat Valley.

The then 15-year-old (she turned 18 this July) was singled out, along with her father, for advocating for girls’ education, and the attack on her sparked an outcry from supporters around the world. She miraculously survived and is now a leading campaigner for girls’ education globally as co-founder of the Malala Fund.

Acclaimed documentary filmmaker Davis Guggenheim (An Inconvenient Truth, Waiting for Superman) shows us how Malala, her father Zia and her family are committed to fighting for education for all girls worldwide. The film gives us an inside glimpse into this extraordinary young girl’s life – from her close relationship with her father who inspired her love for education, to her impassioned speeches at the UN, to her everyday life with her parents and brothers.

This inspiring film is produced by Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald under their long-term production partnership with Image Nation Abu Dhabi and co-financed by Participant Media.
