TWINLESS – Review

Now this new film would be tough to categorize for anyone trying to recommend it to other moviegoers, let alone the writers for theatre chain websites. And that’s a good thing, since the multiplex really needs to have some fare that can’t be “pigeonholed” into a select “by-the-numbers” genre. Though many might not enjoy that, I really get a kick out of stories that throw me a “curve” or just keep me “off balance”. As a movie “Mulligan’s stew”, this dramedy/mystery/romantic character study with some sexy “spice” makes a tasty meal as you find out just what is the meaning of its provocative title, TWINLESS.

We’re “clued in” early on in this story when we hear some noise (tires screeching, a thud) from a fatal accident on a busy urban street, just “off camera”. From there, we’re taken to a graveside funeral service for a young man in his late twenties named Rocky. The mourners are stunned to see the departed’s twin brother in attendance, Roman (Dylan O’Brien), next to his mother, Lisa (Lauren Graham). Back at Rocky’s apartment, the two clash while going through his things before she heads back home. Roman remains in the city, and to calm his anger issues, attends a meeting of a support group for people who have lost their identical twin. There, he strikes up a conversation with Dennis (James Sweeney). During their talk, Dennis tosses out a casual joke about his sexuality (he’s gay). Straight Roman tells him that his brother Rocky was “out and proud”. The two exchange numbers after going to a nearby diner. Although they’re quite different (Dennis is much more cultured, but less confident), Roman reaches out to him, and the two become “hang buddies”, even grocery shopping together (not being alone in the store is a great comfort to Roman). The story pivots to show us that Dennis did actually know Rocky, one of many secrets withheld from Roman. Things get even more complicated when he begins dating the bubbly receptionist at Dennis’ work, Marcie (Aisling Franciosi). Can Dennis continue keeping Roman in the dark, or will Marcie somehow “spill the beans”? And what about his growing attraction for the “unattainable” twinless sibling?

The story’s dense plot works due to the considerable talents of the film’s two lead actors. Perhaps the tad more complex one is anchored by the superb rising star O’Brien (so good as Dan Ackroyd in last year’s SATURDAY NIGHT). He’s tasked with making us invested in the often volatile Roman, who is sweet as a “dems’ and dose'” bro, but can’t quite stop his fist when rage takes over. And yet, O’Brien brings lots of vulnerability to him, as Roman flails about, feeling lost without his twin, Rocky. And yes, we get to see O’Brien in a completely different persona in the flashback scenes of the departed sibling (distinctly different vocal delivery and body language). But that’s not to say that the gifted Sweeney is “treading water” around O’Brien. He also gets us cautiously on Dennis’ side, even as we know that the truth must be revealed. Sweeny shows us that he’s also more than a bit broken by his obsession and yearning for connection, while hiding behind an aloof attitude. Franciosi is the sweet, nurturing “counter-balance” to the duo as she does her best to be a cheerleader for Dennis even as her feelings for Roman emerge. But Franciosi makes her more than “the girlfriend” or even a “third wheel,” as she shows us the “steel” interior around Marcie’s candy-coated exterior. Big kudos to Ms. Graham for her work in just a couple of scenes as the “walking wounded” mother who seems to be sidelined by her all-consuming grief.

Oh, I was surprised to see that aside from co-starring, Sweeney also directed the film from his own script (his second solo feature). And he does a splendid job in twisting the narrative almost into knots, even making us wait nearly twenty minutes to see the title and opening credits. He also deftly shifts the focus from Roman (who dominates the prologue) to the quirky Dennis, who we see doing mental gymnastics to try and disguise his deceptions (love the impromptu British accent). Sweeney injects suspense into the narrative, as we wait for the big reveal and wonder about the character’s reactions. In his direction, Sweeney makes some interesting visual choices, best shown in his clever staging (split screens) of a big Halloween party sequence at Marcie’s and later in a revealing trip into a “day-glo” adult amusement center, which throws the main trio off-kilter. He also disorients us with some early graphic sex scenes before slowing the pace for more emotional intimate interactions, broken up by an “out-of-nowhere” bit of street violence. So for more adventurous filmgoers, this is a movie with strong characters, and an unpredictable script told with surprising visual confidence. That and a terrific young cast makes TWINLESS a true original.

THOR to Feature Hawkeye Cameo

According to a report posted on thewrap.com, the May 6 release of the Kenneth Branagh directed THOR will feature a cameo  appearance by the Marvel superhero and Avengers co-member Hawkeye. Last summer at Comic Con it was announced that the 2012 Avengers film to be directed by Joss Whedon would include the master archer to be played by THE HURT LOCKER’s Jeremy Renner. In the articles, a source who had seen an early cut of THOR confirmed that Hawkeye is in the film, despite earlier quotes from Renner denying the character’s involvement. It’s speculated that he will introduced in a “tag” scene following the end credits as Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury was at the end of the first IRON MAN film in 2008. It was confirmed that Fury will not be in THOR, while S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Coulson played by Clark Gregg will be featured.

The Hawkeye character has been a part of the Marvel comics universe since the early 1960’s. Introduced in Tales of Suspense #57, Clint Barton was an orphan taken in by a traveling carnival and trained in the art of archery. Inspired by the exploits of Iron Man, he fashioned a blue and purple uniform and adapted the name Hawkeye. After stopping a jewelery store heist, the police mistakenly believe him to be part of the robbery gang. After being saved from capture by Natasha Romanova (AKA The Black Widow, then a Russian “Mata Hari” undercover agent), the smitten Barton aids her in battle against Iron Man. Later Clint clears his name and in The Avengers #16 he becomes part of the super team along with former X-Men villains Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch lead by Captain America. The hot-headed marksman finds a home with the team and in The Avengers #63 temporarily loses his bow and arrows to take one of Dr. Henry Pym’s growth formulas to become the towering hero Goliath for the next 34 issues. Returning to his Hawkeye identity, he later becomes the leader of the West Coast Avengers team and the Thunderbolts. Most recently he was thought to be dead twice(Marvel heroes don’t stay deceased too long), became romantically involved with the super heroine Mockingbird, assumed the persona of Ronin, and temporarily took up the shield of the dead(?) Captain America. That’s a pretty lengthy career for a character dismissed at first as a knock-off of DC Comics’ Green Arrow.

The bowman has also been part of the many Marvel animated shows for TV dating back to the syndicated Marvel Superheroes cartoons in 1966. Most recently Hawkeye as been part of The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes airing on the Disney XD channel. In this incarnation Clint is a full fledged S.H.I.E.L.D. agent until being framed by his partner, The Black Widow. After clearing his name, Hawkeye decides to join the Avengers rather than return to the agency(much to the Hulk’s chagrin).

THOR is a Paramount Pictures release scheduled to open on May 6, 2011. THE AVENGERS is a Walt Disney Pictures release slated to open May 4, 2012.

Sundance 2010 Preview: TUCKER & DALE VS EVIL

A horror comedy starring my twin brother, Tyler Labine (OK, we just look A LOT alike) and Alan Tudyk as two hillbillies who are constantly in the wrong place at the wrong time. I can easily see this film being the BLACK DYNAMITE of this year’s festival. I have a feeling its going to do very well in the midnight screenings, and with a good crowd this movie will be a riot. Lets not even mention how much I’ve missed Labine since REAPER ended.

Official Synopsis:

Tucker and Dale, two hillbillies heading to their “fixer-upper” cabin for some relaxin’, discover they ain’t alone in them woods. They encounter an SUV full of vacationing college kids, and Dale unintentionally creeps them out. But later, as he and Tucker are fishing, Dale rescues one of them—the pretty blond Alison—after she falls into the lake. Assuming she’s been captured, the indomitably preppy college kids rally to find her.

A comically macabre battle between Izods and overalls, Eli Craig’s ingenious send-up of the horror genre recounts a simple misunderstanding gone grotesquely wrong. Our hillbilly psycho killers are actually sweet as pie; it’s the judgmental college kids who have “issues.”

Craig lovingly embraces clichés, dispensing humor and gore in equal parts as we watch the educated class blunder to its demise. Nature, beer, and a rising body count—what better way to spend Memorial Day?

Sundance 2010 Preview: ODDSAC

As a huge fan of Animal Collective, the fact that they have a feature film collaboration with Danny Perez which is premiering at Sundance got me instantly excited. Then I found out they would be at the festival and doing interviews…book it. As far as I can tell, Animal Collective got together with Danny Perez, they wrote an entire score while he took a bunch of badass imagery and layered it over the tracks. For those of you that don’t know, this is Danny Perez’s first feature length film, and has previously worked on concert projections for some of my favorite bands. If you dont see this film at Sundance, I believe it will have some sort of theatrical run…but why wait?

Official Synopsis:

ODDSAC, a feature film collaboration between the band Animal Collective and filmmaker Danny Perez, will have its World Premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, January 26th, 2010 in the New Frontiers section. The film was co-conceived by and stars Animal Collective, whose 2009 album “Merriweather Post Pavilion” was named album of the year by SPIN, EW, and Pitchfork, and topped critic’s end of year lists worldwide. ODDSAC is a dense and surreal layering of audio and visual elements that eschews conventional narrative to create a visceral, immersive experience.

ODDSAC features an original score with new songs from the band and complex digital manipulation by Perez, a debut filmmaker and visual artist known for his concert projections with musicians such as Black Dice and Panda Bear. ODDSAC represents a new synthesis of music and film, a “visual album” whose songs will not be released in any other form. ODDSAC is the result of over four years of intense collaboration between Perez and the band. “It was meant to be an open-ended operation of audio-video synthesis, the passing back and forth of visuals and sound so that each would inform the other and create an organic structure,” said Perez.

ODDSAC plays at the following times:

Tuesday, January 26, 8:30pm – Prospector Square Theatre, Park City
Thursday, January 28, 10:30pm – Holiday Village Cinema I, Park City
Friday, January 29, 9:30pm – Holiday Village Cinema II, Park City

Sundance 2010 Preview: BRAN NUE DAE

There are a lot of gloomy, dark, almost melancholy films playing at Sundance this year.   Therefore, what better to brighten your day than an Australian musical set at a Catholic boarding school?   It stars, Geoffrey Rush, too, so you know at least one of the performances found within will be top notch.   Here’s hoping the vibrancy that is oozing off this film already is found throughout its entirety.

Official synopsis:

In her second time at the Sundance Film Festival, Rachel Perkins brings to the screen an adaptation of Jimmy Chi’s popular stage musical Bran Nue Dae, which was a national hit in Australia. It’s the summer of 1969, and with his evangelical mother pointing him toward the priesthood, earnest young Willie (Rocky McKenzie) attends a Catholic boarding school in Perth but, protesting its strict rules, runs away to his homeland. With Father Benedictus (Geoffrey Rush) in hot pursuit, he heads back to Broome, acquiring traveling companions along the way.

With songs and dances rooted in traditional Aboriginal performance, blues, rock and roll, Hollywood musicals, and the rituals of the Roman Catholic Mass, Willie sings and dances his way back to his own land and inspires the people around him to find their own truth. The colors of Aboriginal Australia shimmer in this wonderfully exuberant film, giving viewers a joyful romp while simultaneously touching on Aboriginal history and politics in a way that leaves us all wanting to be Aborigines.

Sundance 2010 Preview: BLUE VALENTINE

Independent films about two people falling in love starring incredibly gifted actors.   What more do you want at Sundance?   BLUE VALENTINE, with Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams leading the charge, is definitely one of those films.   You can just feel the power seeping off of this movie.   With an award-winning screenplay (it won the 2006 Chrysler Film Project, which resulted in $1 million in funding) in tow, BLUE VALENTINE looks to be a very powerful film worth checking out.

Official Synopsis:

Blue Valentine is an intimate, shattering portrait of a disintegrating marriage.

On the far side of a once-passionate romance, Cindy (Michelle Williams) and Dean (Ryan Gosling) are married with a young daughter. Hoping to save their marriage, they steal away to a theme hotel. We then encounter them years earlier, when they met and fell in love—full of life and hope.

Moving fluidly between these two time periods, Blue Valentine unfolds like a cinematic duet whose refrain asks, where did their love go? Framing the film as a mystery whose answer lies scattered in time (and in character), filmmaker Derek Cianfrance constructs an elegant set of dualities: past and present, youth and adulthood, vitality and entropy. The rigor of his process is visible throughout the film. Eliminating artificial devices, he has only the truth of the characters to work with. Because Gosling and Williams bring amazing intensity and emotional honesty to their roles, the experience of connecting to these two souls becomes truly moving.

BLUE VALENTINE plays at the following times:

3:15 PM Sun, Jan 24 Eccles Theatre
8:30 AM Mon, Jan 25 Racquet Club
9:30 PM Tue, Jan 26 Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center in Salt Lake City

Sundance 2010 Preview: LIFE 2.0

Second Life launched in June of 2003.   Since that time, tens of millions of people across the planet have created alternate realities of themselves, sometimes more realistic than others.   Documentary film maker and journalist Jason Spingarn-Koff delves deep into this subculture of the world’s population, creating a documentary where all the characters are chunks of 1s and 0s interacting with one another.   Sounds fascinating to say the very least.

Official synopsis:

Every day, across all corners of the globe, hundreds of thousands of users log onto Second Life, a virtual online world not entirely unlike our own. They enter a new reality, whose inhabitants assume alternate personas in the form of avatars—digital alter egos that can be sculpted and manipulated to the heart’s desire, representing reality, fantasy, or a healthy mix of both. Within this alternate landscape, escapism abounds, relationships are formed, and a real-world economy thrives, effectively blurring the lines between reality and “virtual” reality.

Director Jason Spingarn-Koff digs deeply into the core of basic human interaction by assuming his own avatar and immersing himself in the worlds of Second Life residents, whose real lives have been drastically transformed by the new lives they lead in cyberspace. In doing so, he manages to create an intimate, character-based drama that forces us to question not only who we are, but who we long to be.

LIFE 2.0 is playing at the following times:

2:30 PM Fri, Jan 22 Library Theatre
12:00 PM Tue, Jan 26 Temple Theatre
3:00 PM Thu, Jan 28 Yarrow Hotel Theatre
7:30 PM Sat, Jan 30 Broadway Centre Cinemas IV in Salt Lake City

Sundance 2010 Preview: DADDY LONGLEGS

Movies like DADDY LONGLEGS are the reason I go to Sundance. Little indie nuggets that I absolutely fall in love with. Not saying that is always the case, but after watching this trailer I definitely think this film has what it takes to steal my heart(awww). More so because I can relate to being divorced and not getting to spend as much time with your kids as you would like. Be on the lookout for this film.

What is even better about this movies is the fact that while we are watching it at Sundance, you can watch it at home thanks to Sundance Selects VOD service. Direct From the Sundance Film Festival titles will be available for 30 days in a Sundance-branded section on participating cable systems’ main movies-on-demand channels. For more information, check this out.

Official Synopsis:

With Daddy Longlegs (formerly known as Go Get Some Rosemary), Josh and Benny Safdie have crafted a realistic fairy tale that captures the magic of parenthood, invoking memories of their inventive dad from their own childhood.

Divorced and alone, Lenny (the perfectly cast Ronald Bronstein) is the father of two young boys he gets to see a couple of weeks a year. He cherishes these days with the kids, being both stern parent and lovable buddy, inventing myths and somehow living them, all while working overtime in the big city. When the going gets tough, Lenny uses some unusual, perhaps even hazardous, techniques to keep the kids safe from the world.

Because of the film’s fluid style, we feel that we are in the boxing ring alongside Lenny, as flawed as he is charismatic, champion of each day, yet totally black and blue. As the storm of society continually rains on him, Lenny laughs through it all. Isn’t life crazy?

Sundance 2010 Preview: HAPPYTHANKYOUMOREPLEASE

No, I didn’t forget the spaces in the title, it really is called HAPPYTHANKYOUMOREPLEASE. Dont let the title fool you though, this movie stars Josh Radnor who also directs and the very beautiful Malin Akerman and Kate Mara! I will try to keep my WATCHMEN fanboy excitement at bay when I talk to Malin, but I am not so certain I can do that with my IRON MAN II fanboy excitement with Kate Mara. Even though this is Radnor’s first time as a writer/director I have a lot of faith in this film after reading part of the script and many reviews of it. Should be a solid Sundance hit.

Official Synopsis:

Six New Yorkers juggle love, friendship, and the keenly challenging specter of adulthood. Sam Wexler is a struggling writer who’s having a particularly bad day. When a young boy gets separated from his family on the subway, Sam makes the questionable decision to bring the child back to his apartment and thus begins a rewarding, yet complicated, friendship. Sam’s life revolves around his friends—Annie, whose self-image keeps her from commitment; Charlie and Mary Catherine, a couple whose possible move to Los Angeles tests their relationship; and Mississippi, a cabaret singer who catches Sam’s eye.

Written, directed, and starring Josh Radnor (CBS’s How I Met Your Mother), happythankyoumoreplease boasts a wryly funny script and engaging performances from its ensemble cast. With honesty and humor, Radnor captures a generational moment—young people on the cusp of truly growing up, struggling for connection, and hoping to define what it means to love and be loved.
