Jonathan Rhys Meyers Is The Clash’s Joe Strummer In First Photo From LONDON TOWN

JonathanRhysMeyers_LONDONTOWN

Here’s a first look at Jonathan Rhys Meyers as The Clash’s Joe Strummer in director Derrick Borte’s LONDON TOWN.

In 1970s London, a 14 year old boy is introduced to The Clash by his estranged mother and it changes his life forever.

Strummer died suddenly at age 50 on December 22, 2002 in his home at Broomfield in Somerset, England, from an undiagnosed congenital heart defect. Rolling Stone voted London Calling, the Clash’s classic 1980 album (released in 1979 in the UK) as the best album of the Eighties. Their 1982 song Should I Stay Or Should I Go was their biggest US hit.

The coming-of-age drama is written by Kirsten Sheridan, Sonya Gildea and Matt Brown (director of THE MAN WHO KNEW INFINITY) and produced by Tom Butterfield, Sofia Sondervan and Christine Vachon.

Daniel Huttlestone (INTO THE WOODS) also stars.

Radiant Films International and Cargo Entertainment are handling foreign rights to the film and are currently showing a new promo at AFM.

SPECTRE – The Review

spectre

Director Sam Mendes was never going to meet expectations following SKYFALL. Never. No matter what he did, no matter how hard he tried, SPECTRE was never going to satisfy hungry fans after previously delivering what many rank high among the best films in the 24 film franchise. SKYFALL was a huge achievement for many fans of the series. In many ways, it felt like more of a reset for the series than CASINO ROYALE. Audiences and fans applauded the most recent outing, even if it lacked as many of the stunts and gadgets that some have come to expect from the past two decades of James Bond films after the previous reset: GOLDENEYE. Sam Mendes was able to give the series a sense of prestige that had not been felt since… well… the Sean Connery days. That’s a pretty lofty achievement considering the series has been going for over 50 years.

I may not hold SKYFALL in such high regard as some, but I clearly see the allure and the reasons why so many gravitate towards it. Daniel Craig has had a fairly solid run as 007. Though not without a major hiccup (QUANTUM OF SOLACE), Craig has been able to escape the questionable “Blonde-hair blue-eyed Bond” stigma that was attached to him even before fans saw him donning the signature suit and tie. Having Sam Mendes and his star return again for another outing (possibly the last if you believe some rumors) is a no-brainer. It clearly worked well before; what could go wrong? Unfortunately, SPECTRE is not Bond’s finest hour – though nearly  2 and 1/2 hours is more accurate – but it’s certainly not his darkest hour.

In SPECTRE, James Bond is led from Mexico City, to London, to Rome, to some snowy city in Austria, to Tangier. And keep in mind, I no doubt have forgotten at least a few stops across the game board. A mysterious ring with an octopus carved into it leads to a secret grandiose terrorist organization as well as ghosts from Bond’s past veering their heads.

Now in his fourth outing as the secret agent with a license to kill, Daniel Craig seems to have exhausted his firepower. He comes across as either mildly bored or just simply too predictable. His unembellished mannerisms, gruff tone, and unflinching demeanor recall earlier Bond actor Timothy Dalton, but without the intensity and ruthlessness that Dalton became known for. Ian Fleming’s incarnation of the character found in the original novels is complicated but focused, but Craig seems as tired with the role as he has come across during his publicity tour of SPECTRE.

The supporting cast comes across as just as generic. Léa Seydoux certainly looks the part as she struts through a train car in a slinky silk gown but fails to ignite any form of spark in the brooding Bond. Women have always been the secret agent’s downfall, however, Craig seems more interested in a scurrying mouse in a hotel room in Tangier than the cold but alluring Seydoux.

Christoph Waltz seems born to play a villain with his sly smile and distinctive cadence. What could have been an iconic role in the Bond series feels like a wasted opportunity. Even forgiving the fact that Mendes chooses to leave the villain in the shadows for the majority of the film, never is his presence felt as Bond dashes across continents uncovering the next clue in the mystery that is the criminal organization Spectre. The organization as a whole is not very well defined or threatening in the least. I guess the history that the organization has amounted in the Bond franchise is meant to be enough to inspire chills. Instead, David Bautista has to carry the weight of the always pursuing, all-knowing evildoer as the henchman Hinx – all muscle and seemingly mute. And a fine job he does.

SPECTRE

SPECTRE is the most “James Bondy” of the Craig films but it still has that heavy seriousness like the previous three films. Not as well balanced as CASINO ROYALE and lacking the emotional depth of SKYFALL, SPECTRE feels big and grandiose but also unfocused. At least it’s certainly better than QUANTUM. I feel the mystery wasn’t as intriguing as it should have been given the long (and I mean loooong) buildup. I think this entry will be most remembered for the action scenes. There are three great set pieces that are probably the best action scenes of the Daniel Craig series. A train fight in particular feels classic Bond while still being thrilling for modern audiences.

The action isn’t as gratuitous or disposable as QUANTUM OF SOLACE. The scenes pack a hard-hitting punch and are instantly memorable. It seems that Mendes didn’t want to repeat himself from his last entry. Instead of the operatic moodiness of SKYFALL, he instead wanted to make more of a standard Bond film. The problem is that the stuff between the set pieces doesn’t work as well as it should.

The sequence of events that leads Bond from one exotic locale to the next seems more arbitrary than ever before. A late night tryst with Monica Bellucci leads to him finding out about a secret meeting. Then he’s off to the meeting and she’s just as quickly off the screen. Her role is nonessential. Q examining a recovered Spectre ring can somehow uncover all the people and their personal information that are a part of this secret organization. What? Really? The connections leading from point A to point Z are unbelievably tenuous and seem too coincidental – keep in mind this is coming from a fan who has shrugged off quite a few instances of this in the past.

Fans of the series will enjoy seeing little nods to previous films. From the outfits that Bond wears, to certain set pieces, to even iconic characters coming into play, SPECTRE has some well-incorporated winks without feeling like simply fan service. Considering the film opens with the ominous statement, The dead are alive, you can’t help but let your mind spin all the scenarios. You don’t print that on the big screen without meaning a thing or two. Unfortunately little is done with that statement much more than the obvious. In fact, that statement and its meaning serve as a metaphor for the film as a whole – it’s a flashy idea but without much substance. If this is truly the final entry in the Craig-era Bond series as Craig has hinted at in interviews, it won’t be the best mission to go out on. SKYFALL may have set up a more classic Bond (akin to the Sean Connery days), but SPECTRE takes quite a few steps back, recalling the humdrum villains and location-to-location jumping-days of Pierce Brosnan and Roger Moore. If the dead are truly alive as this film states, perhaps Craig will don the tux and wield the Walther PPK in a couple of years so that he can end his era with a bang.

Berlin. Forty years from today. A roiling city of immigrants, where East crashes against West in a science-fiction Casablanca. Leo Beiler (Skarsgard), a mute bartender has one reason and one reason only for living here, and she’s disappeared. But when Leo’s search takes him deeper into the city’s underbelly, an odd pair of American surgeons (led by Rudd) seem to be the only recurring clue, and Leo can’t tell if they can help, or who he should fear most.

Director Duncan Jones said:

“I’ve been working towards making MUTE for 12 years now. I cannot tell you how thrilled I am that we’re finally going to shoot this utterly unique film. President of Production Ara Keshishian negotiated the deal on behalf of Lotus.

Watch A Clip From Disney’s Lost Film SLEIGH BELLS Featuring Oswald the Lucky Rabbit

sleigh-bells-1928-oswalds-bright-idea

The BFI National Archive and Walt Disney Animation Studios have announced the rediscovery of a rare, long-lost, Walt Disney animated film Sleigh Bells (1928) featuring the first ever Disney character, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, a long-eared precursor to Mickey Mouse.

The world premiere of the new restoration of the film by Walt Disney Animation Studios will take place at BFI Southbank on December 12, 2015 as part of a programme It’s A Disney Christmas: Seasonal Shorts, screening other festive Disney gems from the 1930’s to the present day.

Sleigh Bells from We Are Movie Geeks on Vimeo.

Oswald the Lucky Rabbit was invented by Walt Disney in 1927 and was loved for his mischievous and rebellious personality. A number of other films do survive but Sleigh Bells has been, until now, a lost film, unseen since its original release. The animation in the film was accomplished by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks, both of whom went on to create the character of Mickey Mouse, following a contractual disagreement with Universal, for whom they had created the Oswald films.

The print of Sleigh Bells (1928) was preserved in the collections of the BFI National Archive. The exciting re-discovery was made by a researcher browsing the online catalogue of the BFI National Archive’s holdings. Walt Disney Animation Studios have taken this unique surviving film print and created both a new preservation print and digital copies. The film has a running time of approximately 6 minutes.

Robin Baker, Head Curator, BFI National Archive said:

“What a joyful treat to discover a long-lost Walt Disney film in the BFI National Archive and to be able to show Sleigh Bells to  a whole new audience 87 years after it was made. The restoration of this film will introduce many audiences to Disney’s work in the silent period – it clearly demonstrates the vitality and imagination of his animation at a key point in his early career. We thank Walt Disney for working with us and are thrilled to present the world premiere of this restored version here in London at BFI Southbank.”

Andrew Millstein, President of Walt Disney Animation Studios, which oversaw the restoration, added:

“We’re thrilled to be collaborating with the BFI  National Archives in the restoration of the ‘lost’ Oswald short, ‘Sleigh Bells,’ and to be sharing this delightful animated discovery with audiences in the UK as part of this special Disney holiday programme.  The Oswald shorts are an important part of our Studios’ history, and we have been working with film archives and private collectors all around the world to research the missing titles.  We are grateful to Katrina Stokes, Robin Baker, and their associates at the BFI for helping us locate and preserve ‘Sleigh Bells.'”

Open Road Films Releasing Animated Comedy BLAZING SAMURAI Aug. 4, 2017 – Stars Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Cera And Mel Brooks

samuel l jackson

BLAZING SAMURAI, the animated family comedy from Mass Animation, Huayi Brothers Media Corporation, Flying Tigers Entertainment, and GFM Films has cast Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Cera and Mel Brooks along with George Takei, Gabriel Iglesias, Aasif Mandvi, Djimon Hounsou, Michelle Yeoh, Sandra Tsing Loh, Mel B., and introducing Heavenly Joy Jerkins.

The film is being produced by the director of The Lion King and Stuart Little, Rob Minkoff, along with long-time animation industry executive and President and Founder of Mass Animation Yair Landau (Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs) and producer Susan Purcell (Mother Up!).

Executive producers include Mel Brooks (Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein), Reginald Hudlin (Academy Award nominated producer of Django Unchained) and Pietro Ventani.

BLAZING SAMURAI is directed by Chris Bailey (Alvin And The Chipmunks) and Mark Koetsier (Kung Fu Panda, How To Train Your Dragon) from a screenplay by Ed Stone and Nate Hopper.

BLAZING SAMURAI is an action-packed animated comedy about a scrappy dreamer of a dog named Hank (voiced by Michael Cera) who longs to become a great warrior and fights to save the town of Kakamucho from becoming the litter box of a nefarious feline warlord, transforming society and himself on his quest to become a true samurai.

melbrooks_470x350 by Steven R Stack

The film is equally inspired by and an homage to Mel Brooks’ timeless, hilarious classic BLAZING SADDLES. GFM Films is handling international sales and will be hosting a presentation about the production with a sneak peak at some very early footage at AFM on November 4.

BLAZING SAMURAI will be released by Open Road Films in the United States on August 4, 2017. Sony Pictures International Releasing has already picked up several major territories worldwide, and Huayi Brothers Media Corporation is distributing the film in Greater China.

Samuel L. Jackson is set to voice JIMBO, a cat who once was a great warrior who now lives life hitting the catnip a bit too hard. Despite his addled state, JIMBO reluctantly takes lovable mutt HANK under his wing and teaches him the cunning, courageous and warrior-like ways of the samurai. Forging an unusual friendship between a cat and a dog, the two set off on a wild and hilarious journey to save the town of Kakamucho whilst at the same time learning what it means to be a true, great samurai.

The fur will fly with this cast, which also includes the legendary Mel Brooks as the voice of the SHOGUN, the misguided but benevolent leader. George Takei will lend his inimitable baritone voice to OHGA, the villain’s enforcer. Djimon Hounsou (Guardians of the Galaxy, How to Train Your Dragon) voices SUMO, the gentle giant. Aasif Mandvi (Spider-Man 2, The Internship) and Gabriel Iglesias (The Nut Job, Planes) will star as ICHIRO and CHUCK, Kakamucho’s Laurel and Hardy towncats, with Sandra Tsing Loh (Chicken Little) as LITTLE MAMA, Kakamucho’s cranky grande dame. Introducing 5 year-old America’s Got Talent sensation, Heavenly Joy Jerkins, as EMIKO, the feisty kitten who is a natural warrior, with Michelle Yeoh voicing YUKI, Emiko’s over-protective mom. And Mel B (Spice Girls, America’s Got Talent) serves up a great cameo as THE GIRAFFE, who sees herself as a cat.

“We’ve assembled some extraordinarily strong comedic talent for the cast of this fresh, fun and irreverent animated family film,” said Minkoff. “From the artistic ambition to the East meets West style of story-telling, everyone involved in creating Blazing Samurai is having a blast.”

“Throughout the recording sessions from Mel Brooks to Mel B, this cast has not only met the humor, but raised the level of comedy and heart in this unique homage to Blazing Saddles,” said Landau. “Ed and Nate delivered a first-rate script in Blazing Samurai, a story about cats and dogs getting along that will appeal to everyone whether they’ve seen the original comedy classic or not.”

“When I first read Blazing Samurai,it bounced me back to my first experience of the joy of animated films,” said Michael Ryan, partner at GFM Films. “It’s clever, it’s hilariously funny, and it has pathos. I think that is why we have such great actors joining the cast. It’s such a great piece of writing. We are thrilled with the way our partners have already embraced this film and look forward to sharing more at AFM during our special presentation on Wednesday.”

“There is no business like Shogun business,” said Mel Brooks. “And what is wonderful about the film is that it is going to have great appeal not only for kids, but their parents too. It’s funny and smart.”

Earlier this year, Open Road Films acquired U.S. distribution rights for the film. Filmmakers and talent, including Minkoff, Landau and Mel Brooks, will showcase footage and visual development from the forthcoming film during the special AFM presentation.

Early development and pre-production funding was provided by GFM Films with Mass Animation through Blazing Productions Ltd, a UK-based production company with equity funding through White & Co. and Ober Wealth Management.

Arc Productions (Gnomeo & Juliet, 9), one of the world’s leading CG animation and visual effects studios is the lead animation house on the film. The company has deployed a growing crew of talented artists, animators and expert technical directors to bring the creative ambition and artistry of BLAZING SAMURAI to life on the big screen.
