PATERSON starring Adam Driver and directed by Jim Jarmusch opens in St. Louis January 13th
Paterson (Adam Driver) is a bus driver in the city of Paterson, New Jersey – they share the name. Every day, Paterson adheres to a simple routine: he drives his daily route, observing the city as it drifts across his windshield and overhearing fragments of conversation swirling around him; he writes poetry into a notebook; he walks his dog; he stops in a bar and drinks exactly one beer. He goes home to his wife, Laura (Golshifteh Farahani). By contrast, Laura’s world is ever changing. New dreams come to her almost daily, each a different and inspired project. Paterson loves Laura and she loves him. He supports her newfound ambitions; she champions his secret gift for poetry. The history and energy of the City of Paterson is a felt presence in the film and its simple structure unfolds over the course of a single week. The quiet triumphs and defeats of daily life are observed, along with the poetry evident in its smallest details.

THE QUIET EARTH (1985) screens Wednesday, January 4th at 8pm at Schlafly Bottleworks Restaurant and Bar (7260 Southwest Ave.- at Manchester – Maplewood, MO 63143) as part of Webster University’s Award-WinningStrange Brew Film Series.
Scientist Zac Hobson (Bruno Lawrence) wakes up on an apparently normal day, to find that all living things on earth have simply vanished from the face of the planet. It transpires that the secret project that he has been working on, called Operation Flashlight, has backfired, and somehow altered the state of the universe. The first half of the film is all about Zac; the discovery that he is all alone, the documenting of his decline from resigned sole survivor to near-madman as the realization of his total solitude bites hard, and how he eventually turns this around in his efforts to contact another living soul. The second half has two more survivors (Joanne, played by Alison Routledge, and burly Maori Api, played by Peter Smith) come into play.
THE QUIET EARTH is awash in atmosphere, brought about by the unfamiliar New Zealand locations, director Geoff Murphy’s refreshing vision, and the haunting and unusual music score by John Charles.
He ending of THE QUIET EARTH is perfect. We are left yearning to know what has transpired, in the same way we were bewildered by Kubrick’s “astronaut-in-a-hotel-room” ending of 2001. I saw THE QUIET EARTH twice theatrically when it was new and was blown away then. It deserves to be re-discovered and hats off to the guys behind the Strange Brew film series for dusting it off.

The 1935 version of SCROOGE screens this Thursday and Friday (December 22nd and 23rd) evenings at Webster University’s Moore Auditorium (470 East Lockwood). The feature will be preceded by two animated shorts: Somewhere in Dreamland (1936 – 9 min.) and Christmas Comes But once a Year (1936 – 9 min.). The program starts at 7:30 both evenings. This is a FREE event.
In this straightforward adaptation of Charles Dickens’ novella “A Christmas Carol in Prose, Being a Ghost-Story of Christmas,” Ebenezer Scrooge (Sir Seymour Hicks) is the ultimate miser and cannot stomach Christmas or holiday cheer. His impoverished clerk Bob Cratchit (Donald Calthrop) and nephew Fred (Robert Cochran) are full of holiday spirit. But in the night, visits by three spirits leave a lasting impression on Scrooge.
While not as well-known as other versions of the Dickens classic (Owen, Sim, Magoo, Scott), the 1935 British film of “A Christmas Carol” is almost in their league. Among other things, it preserves, in sound, the performance of one of the legendary Scrooges of the English stage, Sir Seymour Hicks, who definitely does not disappoint. In the beginning, his Scrooge is one of the nastiest ever seen on film, his appearance that of something that crawled out from under a rock. But it is precisely these qualities that make his gradual transformation all the more affecting. At the beginning, we loathe the man, at the end, we rejoice with him at his redemption.
