Top 5 DC Movies To Catch Before Seeing THE FLASH Movie And Check Them Out On Max’s DC Hub

By Michelle Hannett and Marc Butterfield

In one week, Warner Bros. Pictures THE FLASH, directed by Andy Muschietti (the “IT” films, “Mama”) opens in theaters on June 16.

Ezra Miller reprises their role as Barry Allen in the DC Super Hero’s first-ever standalone feature film. Worlds collide in “The Flash” when Barry uses his superpowers to travel back in time in order to change the events of the past. But when his attempt to save his family inadvertently alters the future, Barry becomes trapped in a reality in which General Zod has returned, threatening annihilation, and there are no Super Heroes to turn to. That is, unless Barry can coax a very different Batman out of retirement and rescue an imprisoned Kryptonian… albeit not the one he’s looking for. Ultimately, to save the world that he is in and return to the future that he knows, Barry’s only hope is to race for his life. But will making the ultimate sacrifice be enough to reset the universe?

“The Flash” is a film that puts the fan-favorite DC Super Hero front and center in a big-screen outing filled with epic action, surprising humor and heart, along with the wish-fulfilling superpower of the ability to bend time… and change the past. Reuniting iconic and beloved DC characters across timelines– Batman, The Flash, Supergirl and another Batman!–and featuring one of the canon’s towering villains in Krypton’s own General Zod, this film distinguishes itself as a cinematic spectacle that elevates the genre through the unique lens of Andy Muschietti.

And the character of The Flash is more than deserving of such extraordinary treatment. Introduced in 1940 as “quicker than the rapidity of thought” in Flash Comics #1, he was created by writer Gardner Fox and artist Harry Lampert. Later, with Fox partnering with Carmine Infantino on 1961’s Flash of Two Worlds, The Flash became the first character in comics to play with a multiverse.

In creating THE FLASH, filmmakers were influenced by two seminal works within the comic book canon:

  • Flash of Two Worlds (Gardner Fox and Carmine Infantino, 1961), where a Silver Age Barry Allen finds that by vibrating his molecules at a certain frequency, he is transported to another version of Earth, where he meets a Golden Age Jay Garrick
  • Flashpoint (Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert, 2011, a five-issue miniseries), where Barry Allen wakes to discover that his world has changed, and only he is aware of the difference between his real world and this altered one.

To get you pumped for the opening of the film, WAMG brings you the Top 5 movies to catch before you head out to cinemas to see THE FLASH.

5. SUPERMAN/BATMAN: PUBLIC ENEMIES (MAX)

https://www.max.com/movies/7aa6ea3f-a28d-4a2b-b1d7-8f68e7c3a124

Superman and Batman are in a race against time to stop a world-killing asteroid from destroying the Earth. The mission is complicated by the fact that it is primarily made of kryptonite, so Superman will need Batmans resourcefulness and connections to stop it, all the while President Lex Luthor sees this as an excuse to demand all superheroes do his bidding. Naturally Superman and Batman decline and decide to solve this problem on their own, all the while evading all other superheroes that are out to get them. This is fifth on our list because is shows that Batman is way more than just a man in tights, way more. He is a leader and the brains behind the Justice League.

4. MAN OF STEEL (MAX)

https://www.max.com/movies/73b6c63e-5eb5-4c0d-86f5-c3f398114a15

2013’s MAN OF STEEL stands right up there with 1978’s SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE as one of the best films on the famous Kryptonian. The music for Zack Snyder’s MOS from Hans Zimmer goes hand in hand with John Williams’ soaring score, Michael Shannon’s General Zod is as menacing as Terence Stamp’s in SUPERMAN 2 and, sigh, we never thought anyone could fill the red boots of Christopher Reeve’s Kal-El… and then along came Henry Cavill. Once again the familiar phrase of Truth, Justice and the American Way was an emotional mantra and as the SUPERMAN movie poster tagline said, “You’ll Believe A Man Can Fly.” Indeed we did.

3. ZACH SNYDER’S JUSTICE LEAGUE (MAX)

https://www.max.com/movies/d34191ed-48d8-417f-bd98-87d803c0b44f

The four hour version is a triumph and made us want an additional four.

An army of persuasive fans, and along with one very colorful, newly-shot scene, after four years in 2021, director Zack Snyder returned to the DCEU to complete his vision. Even before the 2017 version of the movie was released, there were rumblings from the fans. First it was quiet. Give us the Snyder Cut. After the movie hit theaters in November 2017, it only got louder. #ReleaseTheSnyderCut, people demanded, circulating petitions and pleading with the studio. Once fans learned an actual Snyder Cut existed, they were overjoyed and doubled down on their efforts. It worked. The extended Justice League allowed for extended world building. Never before seen, existing-footage scenes with Deathstroke (Joe Manganiello), Calvin Swanwick/Martian Manhunter (Harry Lennix), and Ryan Choi (Zheng Kai) rounded out the mythology. We got the opportunity to watch our heroes join forces to eliminate Steppenwolf, much to the chagrin of New God Darkseid, making his first appearance. With his soaring music cues, Tom Holkenborg’s score brought the film and earth’s defenders to new heights.

Interview with : https://www.wearemoviegeeks.com/2021/03/producer-deborah-snyder-talks-with-wamg-for-zack-snyders-justice-league/

Producer Deborah Snyder said in our interview: “We were planning a 2nd and 3rd Justice League movie where we would be also able to complete the arcs we had fully fleshed out. The idea was to meet Cyborg, who was set to be the heart of this movie. At the time we hadn’t come up with a Cyborg standalone, but that was our plan. So, we did the deepest dive of the movie into Cyborg’s backstory and what makes him tick.”

2. BATMAN (1989) (MAX)

https://www.max.com/movies/fab1f111-15a4-4b68-83bb-4d07e28c862e

The OG, Michael Keaton plays Batman/Bruce Wayne and Jack Nicholson, The Joker, go head-to-head in the ultimate BATMAN movie. Danny Elfman’s booming score, Bob Ringwood’s colorful costume design and Tim Burton’s direction instantly made the 1989 movie the ultimate superhero film by which all are measured. Anton Furst was the amazing English production designer who won an Academy Award for overseeing the design of Gotham City and the iconic Batmobile.

1. JUSTICE LEAGUE: THE FLASHPOINT PARADOX (MAX)

https://www.max.com/movies/61e4efde-a2e8-47d8-a174-ab654ae6eb3f

In an effort to change his mothers fate, the Flash causes a temporal ripple that creates a fractured reality where the Justice league has never formed, Superman does not exist and a war rages between Wonder Woman’s Amazons and Aquaman. Flash teams up with Batman and Cyborg to restore the timeline. Staring the voices of Justin Chambers, Michael Jordan, Kevin Mckidd, Dee Baker, Steve Blum, Kevin Conroy, Sam Daly, Dana Delany, Grey DeLisle, Cary Elwes, Nathan Fillion, Vanessa Marshall, Ron Perlman and, James Stuart.

This is number one on our list because it is the animated adaptation of the DC Comics story Flashpoint and THE FLASH Movie is an adaptation of both.

THE FLASH ensemble also includes rising star Sasha Calle, Michael Shannon (“Bullet Train,” “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”), Ron Livingston (“Loudermilk,” “The Conjuring”), Maribel Verdú (“Elite,” “Y tu mamá también”), Kiersey Clemons (“Zack Snyder’s Justice League,” “Sweetheart”), Antje Traue (“King of Ravens,” “Man of Steel”) and Michael Keaton (“Spider-Man: Homecoming,” “Batman”).

THE FLASH is produced by Barbara Muschietti (the “IT” films, “Mama”) and Michael Disco (“Rampage,” “San Andreas”). The screenplay is by Christina Hodson (“Birds of Prey,” “Bumblebee”), with a screen story by John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein (“Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” “Spider-Man: Homecoming”) and Joby Harold (“Transformers: Rise of the Beasts,” “Army of the Dead”), based on characters from DC. The executive producers are Toby Emmerich, Walter Hamada, Galen Vaisman and Marianne Jenkins.

Joining director Muschietti behind the camera are director of photography Henry Braham (“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” “The Suicide Squad”), production designer Paul Denham Austerberry (“IT Chapter Two,” “The Shape of Water”), editors Jason Ballantine (the “IT” films, “The Great Gatsby”) and Paul Machliss (“The Gentlemen,” “Baby Driver”), and costume designer Alexandra Byrne (“Doctor Strange,” “Guardians of the Galaxy”); the score is by Benjamin Wallfisch (“The Invisible Man,” the “IT” films).

Warner Bros. Pictures presents a Double Dream/a Disco Factory production of an Andy Muschietti film, THE FLASH. It will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures and is set to open in theaters in North America on June 16, 2023 and internationally beginning 14 June 2023.

Second Trailer For THE FLASH Hits And Reaction To Early Screening At CinemaCon

Hitting theaters on June 16th is the long-awaited film, THE FLASH.

The film was screened at CinemaCon on Tuesday and below are some of the reactions.

Warner Bros. Pictures presents THE FLASH, directed by Andy Muschietti (the “IT” films, “Mama”). Ezra Miller reprises their role as Barry Allen in the DC Super Hero’s first-ever standalone feature film. Worlds collide in “The Flash” when Barry uses his superpowers to travel back in time in order to change the events of the past. Check out the recent Q&A with the press by the Muschietti’s.

The sibling filmmakers gathered on the Warner Bros. lot in Los Angeles Monday night to screen the current cut of the film in its entirety and participate in a Q&A. When asked by the moderator how Miller was doing, months after the actor had various run-ins with the law, Andy said, “Ezra is well now.”

“We’re all hoping that they get better… They’re taking the steps to recovery,” he added of the actor, who uses they/them pronouns. “They’re dealing with mental health issues, but they’re well. We talked to them not too long ago, and they’re very committed to getting better.”

“And, I have to say, during our shoot, during principal photography, their commitment to the role was something we’ve never seen,” Barbara said. “And the discipline to the work, the willingness — physical, mental, and just wanting to go beyond the pale — is just amazing.”

“Justice League Dark” One Of Three Series To Air On HBO Max From Bad Robot

HBO Max has announced it has given production commitments for three new high-octane one-hour dramas from J.J. Abrams and Katie McGrath’s Bad Robot Productions and Warner Bros. Television Group, marking the first new Bad Robot–produced television projects for HBO Max under the exclusive, wide-ranging content collaboration partnership formed by Bad Robot with HBO Max parent company WarnerMedia in fall 2019.

The first series “Duster, is to be co-written by J.J. Abrams & LaToya Morgan. Set in the 1970’s Southwest, the life of a gutsy getaway driver for a growing crime syndicate goes from awful to wildly, stupidly, dangerously awful. Morgan is currently a writer on “The Walking Dead”. Previously, she was a co-executive producer and writer of AMC’s “Into the Badlands” and “TURN: Washington’s Spies,” and was a writer for NBC’s “Parenthood” and Showtime’s “Shameless.” Produced by Warner Bros. Television.

The second series, “Overlook, is a horror-thriller series inspired by and featuring iconic characters from Stephen King’s masterpiece The Shining. “Overlook” explores the untold, terrifying stories of the most famous haunted hotel in American fiction. The project reunites Bad Robot, King and WBTV, who previously collaborated on the acclaimed psychological-horror series “Castle Rock” for Hulu.

The third will be a major series based on DC characters in the “Justice League Dark” Universe, details to be revealed soon.

While we wait for this series, you can catch up on the comics and animated movies.

JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK the animated movie was released in 2017. The film stars Matt Ryan as John Constantine and Jason O’Mara reprising his role as Batman. https://www.dcuniverse.com/videos/watch/justice-league-dark/b02d614a-c497-4978-8aef-eaf6e86f3010/

Justice League Dark

Debuting in May 2020 is the R-Rated JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK: APOKOLIPS WAR. It features the largest Super Hero cast in the history of DC Universe Movies with dozens of actors/characters spotlighted in a grand ensemble of talent reprising their roles from this six-year story continuum. Matt Ryan (Legends of Tomorrow, Constantine), Jerry O’Connell (Carter, Bravo’s Play by Play, Stand by Me) and Taissa Farmiga (The Nun, The Mule, American Horror Story) anchor the cast as Constantine, Superman and Raven, respectively – the triumvirate determined to assemble the forces necessary to lead humanity’s final attack.

Alongside that trio are the long-running core of Justice League voices — Jason O’Mara (The Man in the High Castle, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) as Batman, Rosario Dawson (Briar Patch, Daredevil, Sin City) as Wonder Woman, Shemar Moore (S.W.A.T., Criminal Minds) as Cyborg and Christopher Gorham (Covert Affairs, Insatiable, Ugly Betty) as The Flash – as well as JL-adjacents Rebecca Romijn (X-Men, The Librarians) and Rainn Wilson (The Office, The Meg) as the voices of Lois Lane and Lex Luthor, respectively.

Marvel Studios’ AVENGERS: ENDGAME Bring Back Event Starting June 28 With New Footage

Jim Batts wrote in his review of Marvel Studios’ AVENGERS: ENDGAME:

All the craftspeople that worked on the film are at the “top of their game’ in crafting a real “love letter” to the fans of the Marvel show (many have said that each new film is another episode in an incredible TV show, one that the “tube” could never afford). There are entrances and exits, arrivals and departures, all with a feeling of coming “full circle”. You bet there will be more MCU entries (Spidey’s back in July), but this spectacular would be a fitting farewell. It’s a warm, enveloping “thank you” hug from “master overseer” Kevin Feige, and all those talented artists involved. AVENGERS: ENDGAME will stand as a most inventive, entertaining inspiration to all who continue on this legacy.

The film is returning to theaters this weekend.

Jennifer Lawrence, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Nicholas Hoult, Kodi Smit-McPhee And James McAvoy Talk X-Men Movies In New DARK PHOENIX Celebration Video

It all leads to this moment.

20th Century Fox has released a new video in celebration of the upcoming release of DARK PHOENIX. The film stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters, and Jessica Chastain, and is scored by composer Hans Zimmer.

DARK PHOENIX arrives in theaters everywhere this Friday, June 7.

This is the story of one of the X-Men’s most beloved characters, Jean Grey, as she evolves into the iconic DARK PHOENIX.

During a life-threatening rescue mission in space, Jean is hit by a cosmic force that transforms her into one of the most powerful mutants of all. Wrestling with this increasingly unstable power as well as her own personal demons, Jean spirals out of control, tearing the X-Men family apart and threatening to destroy the very fabric of our planet.

The film is the most intense and emotional X-Men movie ever made. It is the culmination of 20 years of X-Men movies, as the family of mutants that we’ve come to know and love must face their most devastating enemy yet — one of their own.

And where is Wolverine in all of this?

Rolling Stone spoke with Director Simon Kinberg for the answer:

“Beginning with the original X-Men movie, back in the pre-superhero-industrial-complex year of 2000, every non-Deadpool entry in the franchise has had one thing in common: Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. Dark Phoenix, due in theaters on June 7th, is the exception, and it’s not just because Jackman bid farewell to the character in James Mangold’s superb 2017 film Logan.

“Jackman could still have fit into the timeline, Kinberg notes, in keeping with his small role in 2016’s X-Men Apocalypse.  But there was another issue: In the original Dark Phoenix saga in the comic books — and even in the botched previous adaptation in 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand — the love triangle between Cyclops, Jean Grey (the X-Men member who becomes Dark Phoenix, and Wolverine is key to the narrative.  “If you know the Dark Phoenix story, you’d want to really service the love story between Logan and Jean,” says Kinberg. “And I think the notion of Hugh Jackman, as great as he looks for his age, and Sophie Turner — it didn’t sit well with me. Or anyone else!”

“Plus, Kinberg wanted to keep the focus on the title character. “There was an element of this being Jean’s story,” he says. “And I was committing so fully to it that I didn’t want to run the risk of pulling away from Jean by going to the well of a fan-favorite character in these movies. I wanted this to be a very different experience of seeing an X-Men movie.”

Film fans can now buy advance tickets for “Captain Marvel” on Fandango, the ultimate digital network for all things movies. “Captain Marvel” opens in theaters on Friday, March 8.

In a Fandango survey of over 3,500 moviegoers, “Captain Marvel” emerged as one of the top three most anticipated films of 2019. The film’s star, Brie Larson, was overwhelmingly voted as the top actress that fans are excited to see this year.

“‘Captain Marvel’ is one of the most anticipated movies of the year, and for good reason,” says Fandango Managing Editor Erik Davis. “Not only is it Marvel Studios’ first female-lead film, but their track-record is outstanding and moviegoers are super excited to watch Brie Larson become Marvel’s latest – and most powerful – superhero in her biggest role to date.”

In an exclusive interview with Fandango, directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck talked about what fans can expect from the latest installment to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “It has a lot of playfulness in it, and that kind of buddy-cop vibe that Captain Marvel has with the Nick Fury character was really an important touchstone for us,” said Boden. “Yeah. Like the ‘80s and ‘90s buddy-cop movies, like “48 Hrs.’ or ‘Lethal Weapon,’” added Fleck.
