B-Movie Icons: Bruce Campbell

“Shop smart … shop S-Mart.” This advice has been sponsored by your local evil undead ass-kickin’ chainsaw-wieldin’ boomstick carryin’ all around nice guy hero … who doubles as a grocery store clerk.
Bruce Campbell
Bruce Campbell is one of the coolest guys in the world. Sure, true indie/b-movie fans know who he is and probably a lot about him. He’s all over the web. I actually got to meet him once at the Tivoli Theatre in Saint Louis when he was premiering his movie The Man With the Screaming Brain. I spoke [very] briefly with him and shook his hand, but he sure did seem really cool to me. Of course, I also got his autograph.
If Chins Could Kill Campbell got his start making movies for fun with his pal Sam Raimi … maybe you’ve heard of him? He and Sam and Ted (Sam’s brother) and a few other guys grew into film-fanatics together. Actually, you can read all about it in Bruce’s first book, If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B-Movie Actor. The book tells of his experience making movies outside of Hollywood. Later on, Bruce wrote a second book (which happens to hold that coveted autograph) entitled Make Love the Bruce Campbell Way. Make Love the Bruce Campbell Way
After making several short films with Sam Raimi, Josh Becker and John Cameron, Bruce starred in a little cult favorite called The Evil Dead (1981). Essentially a slasher flick, made on a very low-budget, the movie became a stylistic b-movie icon. The story follows Ash and a group of his friends who camp out in an old cabin, only to discover a Book of the Dead, which unleashes unspeakable evil into their world. Bruce Campbell would return as Ash in Evil Dead 2 (1987). Basically, this was a remake of The Evil Dead, except with a slightly bigger budget. The gang also decided to pursue the story as more of a horror-comedy and it worked beautifully.
Bruce Campbell as Ash in ‘Army of Darkness’
Raimi tapped Campbell again to make Army of Darkness (1992) with a much bigger budget and a huge following. This time, Ash is thrown back in time to the medieval age, where he leads an army of peasants against an army of the dead, which in turn is led by his evil doppelganger. Yeah, just trust me and watch it … it’s tons of fun. Between Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness, Bruce Campbell appeared in several b-movies, including Maniac Cop (1988), Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat (1990), Mindwarp (1990), Maniac Cop 2 (1990), Lunatics: A Love Story (1991) and Waxwork 2: Lost in Time (1992).
The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. In 1993, Bruce received his own television comedy. He starred in The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. as Brisco, a sort of Indiana Jones character. In 1994, the Coen brothers cast him in The Hudsucker Proxy. In 1995-96, Bruce had television roles in Lois & Clark, American Gothic and Homicide. In 1996, John Carpenter cast Bruce as a demented surgeon in Escape From LA. In 1997, Campbell got really busy doing television again and was cast as the lead in a really cool project by another old friend. Josh Becker directed Campbell in Running Time (1997), a digital film intended to emulate the experimental technique of shooting an entire movie in one continuous take. This was first attempted with astounding success by Alfred Hitchcock with Rope (1948) which starred James Stewart. Running Time tells the story of Carl, played by Campbell, a small-time crook hoping to pull off one last bank heist. That same year, Campbell was cast as Virgil in McHale’s Navy. Between 1995-99, Campbell had recurring roles in both Hercules and Xena: Warrior Princess. In 2000, Campbell received another television action-comedy show call Jack of All Trades.
In 2002, Sam Raimi cast Campbell as the wrestling announcer in Spider-Man, and he made a cool indie film called Bubba Ho-Tep, which you can read more about in the Meet the Makers post on Don Coscarelli. Bruce returned to his busy schedule again, in both TV and movies and alos finds himself doing a lot of voice work for video games and animated projects. There comes a time, however, when a man feels he has to take hold of the reigns and steer his career in his own direction. Campbell decided to step behind the camera and become actor-director for a film called The Man With the Screaming Brain (2005).Bruce Campbell plays William Cole, a greedy executive who ends up dead. He is brought back to life by a mad scientist, but half of his brain has been replaced with that of a Russian cab driver named Yegor. These two personalities have nothing common, bickering with each other (funny just to think about), until they realize the one thing they have in common is they both were murdered by the same woman. The two begin working together to plot their revenge. Campbell treats his fans to a b-movie only his fans could love and appreciate, but experience teaches us everything. Who knows, maybe we’ll see another film from Mr. Campbell, the auteur director? The Man With the Screaming Brain

Freddy’s Dead … Englund Dumped

Robert England

Robert Englund is the reason the Nightmare on Elm Street movie were so successful. Without him, they would have been just  another bunch of slasher films from the 80’s. The Nightmare movies were fun and original and Englund created a character who had just as much fun slicin’ and dicin’ teens in their dreams. Well it appears Englund’s dream has come to an end. According to “a number of industry sources,” [as reported on shocktilyoudrop.com]  Michael Bay’s studio Platinum Dunes is looking to recast the monster in the red and black sweater. It’s unfortunate that all signs seem to be suggesting Englund is getting the Kane Hodder treatment. So, the big big question now is … Who’s up for filling the razor blade fingered glove?

Los Angeles Geeks: Eli Roth Loves You

director_eli_roth__right__works_with_actress_eli_and_italian_actress_edwige_fenech_on_the_set_of_his_latest_film_hostel_part_ii_s.jpg

Just a heads up to anyone in the greater Los Angeles area, the continually incredible New Beverly Cinema will be continuing its recent tradition of director film festivals this month with guest programmer Eli Roth. Maybe you caught the gigantic film fest that Quentin Tarantino hosted back when Grindhouse was coming out, or maybe you attended Edgar Wright’s (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) festival right before Christmas or maybe you’ve never been anywhere. No matter what your experience is with my favorite theater in LA, now is the time for more fun.

Starting February 17th through March 1st, the ‘Greats of Roth’ fest will feature a lineup of double features hand picked as favorites by Eli Roth himself. He’ll introduce select screenings (schedule permitting), and you never know who’ll drop by to help things out. We saw everyone from John Landis to Jack Hill drop by to say hi in the past, so it’s always a thrill. And of course, there are the movies themselves:

February 17-19: Torso / Pieces

February 20-21: Mother’s Day / Creepshow

February 22-23: Carrie / Zapped!

February 24-26: The Apple / Stunt Rock

February 27-28: The Blair Witch Project / Cannibal Holocaust

February 29-March 1st: Bachelor Party / Caddyshack

The New Beverly just got some renovation done too, so there’s no better time to come and show your support, see these classics on the big screen again, and generally just have a sweet time. I’ll be there, so feel free to say hi. Just don’t talk through the movies, or I’ll throw my Cherry Coke on you.

A sad weekend for movie lovers, movie geeks…America.

hannahmontana.jpg

With mixed emotions I report on this weekends activities. There is good new and bad news. The Patriots finally fell thus avoiding a historical, yet controversial, 2007 winning season. The Giants pulled it out and for 2 years in a row a Manning was Super Bowl MVP. Now for the bad news, Hannah Montana won the top spot at the box office. This is truly a sad day for movie goes around the world. Apparently with the big game this weekend no one but “tween girls” went to the movies which pushed Hannah to the top. Who would have thought that in 2008 a Cyrus would be at the top of anything. (Sorry to all those hearts I might have caused to be either achy or breaky.) With a grand total of $29 million it swept the competition leaving The Eye at a distant 2nd with only $13 million. 27 Dresses, Juno and Meet the Spartans round out the top 5. Hannah Montana? Miley Cyrus? Best of Both Worlds? Really? Seriously?
And we wonder why the rest of the world hates us…

B-Movie Icons: ‘Rowdy’ Roddy Piper

‘Rowdy’ Roddy Piper

Who can forget the kilt-wearing, loud-mouth professional wrestler from the hay-day of the WWF? Considered one of the all-time favorites among wrestling fans, Roderick George Toombs was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005. What many people may not know is that he isn’t Scottish, but actually Canadian. Furthermore, he is an actor … and a quite experienced one at that. Piper has appeared in  28 movies,  with three more in production, and several television episodes, including The Highwayman, Silk Stockings, Highlander, RoboCop and The Outer Limits. Piper is a hard working actor, despite being recently diagnosed with Lymphoma cancer, Piper is not about to give in. In fact, he’s jumping back on the horse and kicking his career back into high gear. In honor of the once hated wrestler who’s become one of the most beloved pop-culture icons, here’s a look at  two movies he starred in that remain modern b-movie classics.

Hell Comes to Frogtown In Hell Comes to Frogtown (1987), Roddy Piper plays Sam Hell, one of the last few fertile men in a radioactive post-apocalyptic America. As a result of nuclear/biological war, America’s population has been left largely infertile and has also spawned a new mutant race of amphibio-humanoid creatures. Hell is imprisoned by a group of women who now run what’s left of America, attempting to repopulate their dying race. Hell is chosen to lead a mission to rescue a group of fertile women who were captured and forced into the harem of the leader of the frog-like mutants. Hell is reluctant to obey, but cannot escape. The women have attached an explosive device to his genitals which will explode if he gets too far from his guards. Frogtown is incredibly campy and a lot of fun. The special effects are bad, but are still good enough to be entertaining. The story is only minimally original, sort of a cheesy take on A Boy and His Dog, but nothing beats watching a movie like this late at night with a friend or two, popcorn and a couple of beers.
They Live In They Live (1988), Piper plays Nada, a construction worker whose life isn’t going well. Nada finds a pair of sunglasses that he discovers have a special power. While wearing these sunglasses he  is able to see through the disguise of a large-scale alien invasion on Earth. Nada learns the aliens have planted subliminal messages everywhere, in publications, on billboards. He also learns the aliens walk amongst us in relatively large numbers, undetected. They are  disguised to look like us by some holographic alien technology. Nada knows he must do something, but doesn’t know how to convince others of the truth he’s learned. Nada meets up with Frank, played by veteran character actor Keith David (The Thing, Pitch Black), and the two engage in perhaps the longest fist fight ever caught on film. Once they’ve both fought to exhaustion, the two men decide to work together at exposing the alien secret to corrupt and take over the planet. They Live was directed by master of horror John Carpenter, so the movie is a step up from the typical b-movie that comprises the bulk of Piper’s film career. In a way, it was his big break early in his acting experience. Unfortunately, this would be the biggest role he would land in a motion picture.

‘Rowdy’ Roddy Piper … Here’s to a full recovery and a new era of b-movie stardom. Keep Fighting!

Jean-Claude Van Damme stars as Jean-Claude Van Damme in “JCVD,” which stands for Jean-Claude Van Damme

jeanclaudevandamme.jpg

Earlier this week, We Are Movie Geeks Dot Com featured a certain Belgian ass-kicker in the “Greatest out of work actor of the day† section of the site. The question was posed: What the hell happened to Jean-Claude? Yeah, he’s had his DTV’s, but he’s had theatrical releases†¦just not in this country.

Van Damme, you see, has gone and pulled a John Woo. Pulling a John Woo is a phenomena, wherein a foreign talent comes to the states and all us movie geeks are excited, but the output leaves something to be desired and, disillusioned, said talent bolts for the homeland. More often than not, said talent then flourishes.

What happened to Jean-Claude? He went back to Belgium, and is in cool movies like ‘Narco.’Â

Just like how all Van Damme movies involve fighting and avenging something, now Van Damme is fighting his own shitty reputation, and avenging his career.

Van Damme stars in ‘JCVD,’ a kind of mockumentary wherein a group of filmmakers are producing a Van Damme biopic, and they’re trying their best to keep the muscles from Brussels out of the picture. Jean-Claude Van Damme will have none of that, mind you. Comedy ensues. Maybe a little ass-kicking.

The film is set for release in Belgium and France, no word yet on a US release, but keep your eyes open. Stranger things have happened.

Some side notes:

Remember ‘Cyborg?’ Did you know that movie only exists because of a last ditch effort for Cannon to make the money back that they spent on ‘Spider-Man’ and a sequel to ‘Masters of the Universe?’

Also, I mentioned ‘Narco’ earlier. It stars Guillaume Canet as Gus, a narcoleptic that dreams of superheroes. Canet is also in Vidocq (‘Dark Portals’ in the US), which you should make an effort to see. Really.

By the POWER of GRAYSKULL !!

With a renewed interest in all things comic book, and these films  making a huge splash at the box office… What could be brewing for us die-hard movie-goers, and lovers of the fantastic?

MOTU_Logo

Masters of the Universe (2009)

The tagline reads “Only one can have the Power…” with the outline that on IMDB.com says, “He-Man, the most powerful man in the universe, goes against the evil Skeletor to save the planet Eternia and protect the secrets of Castle Grayskull.” What could we be in store for? Rumor has it this version of one of  my favorite  80’s icons  will be filmed in the same style, and cinematography as 300, which gives us something to seriously look forward to. Eternia, He-Man, and the rest of the cast of Characters that created the Masters of the Universe, in my opinion, could only truely be brought to the big screen as a live-action feature with the talent, abilities, and technology of our modern day filmmakers. Joel Silver has been rumored to be attached to produce this. As some of you may know other films that  Silver is accredited with…Die Hard 1&2, Predator 1&2, Road House, Weird Science, Leathal Weapon 1-4, Matrix 1-3, and numerous other SMASH HITS. Though, he also brought us Dungeons & Dragons: The Movie, but I won’t hold that against him much. Justin Marks is coming forth to write. His most notable work to date…Well, not much, however  he’s also writing “Street Fighter: Legend of Chun Lee”. We can only hope Marks is an avid watcher of the cartoon, and huge fan of the franchise. Even if the dialogue is limited, I’m sure the visuals will be nothing short of stunning. I’m looking forward to a fantastic  visual masterpiece ! Setting myself up for a let down? Could be.

Tips for Talking to Movie Geeks

Jamie Kennedy as the Movie Geek Friend in ‘Scream’

If you’re a fellow movie geek, chances are you’ve encountered this very same situation. You’re out and about, shopping, hanging out or whatever, and you happen to run into someone and strike up a casual conversation. (This can also be applied to friends and family, but keep in mind you have a much more likely chance of seeing them again.) By some chance, the topic of movies enters into the conversation. Being a movie geek, you most likely understand that you’re knowledge of movies is probably above average. So, the topic of movies most likely was initiated by the other person and there’s a good chance it happened like this:

“Oh, you like movies. What’s your favorite movie?”

[Enter the dilemma.] Now, I am only speaking for myself and my own experience, but I am fairly sure other movie geeks have encountered this horrible question before. No offense to anyone who has asked me this, but I truly hate this question. Why? Well, it’s impossibly far too generic and way too difficult to answer in less than, say … 2-3 hours. It’s not that I am not willing to discuss movies with any living soul that may walk up to me, but I believe there is a sort of etiquette that needs to be applied. Keep in mind, watching (and often reading about) movies is a hobby (and sometimes more) for a movie geek. Personally, I have seen well over 3,000 movies. Many of which I have loved, even more I’ve liked and a lot that I have had mixed to less than favorable opinions about. However, to ask a movie geek what his/her single most favorite movie of all time is … well, that’s just down right cruel. Granted, there are some of us who are fortunate to have nailed this down and can answer the question with a simple, predetermined response. In my opinion, this I cannot do. First of all, I’m just simply not sure which one is my absolute, all-time favorite. Then, I must consider that I haven’t seen every movie.

Some tips for engaging a conversation on movies with the average movie geek to ensure a pleasant discussion:

  • Don’t ask, “What is your favorite movie?”
  • Instead, ask more specific, defining questions. For example  “Which directors do you like?”
  • Be prepared to have a lengthy conversation. If you’re in a hurry, save it for another time.
  • Be open to the fact that movie geeks are usually opinionated and will tell you bluntly what they thought of said movie.
  • Please don’t engage movie-related small talk with a movie geek. Only engage if truly interested.
  • Be honest. Don’t pretend you know more than you do. Remember, we’re movie geeks and we’ll probably detect any bulls***.
  • Finally, have fun with it and use it as a chance to hear another point-of-view, or discover new movies, directors, etc.
