Review: ‘Prince of Broadway’ LAFF 08

Thank goodness for the La Film Fest and its general lack of organization. I was originally trying to get into the X-Files Sneak Peak panel but three line changes, two conflicting reports and a half an hour wait later, I still wasn’t getting in due to the requirement of a physical ticket along with my credentials (because sometimes a press pass just isn’t good enough for a thrall of screaming Chris Carter fans). So I strolled away and on a whim popped into the Regent theater mere moments before the world premiere of Prince of Broadway. In the typical random sway of film festival discoveries, I found my favorite film of the festival so far.

Review: ‘Encounters At The End Of The World’ LAFF 08

Werner Herzog’s documentaries are always a little offbeat, with his signature voice and pattern of questioning guiding the films to unexpected destinations. Who else would open a film funded by the National Science Foundation with the question that if ants can keep plant lice as slaves, why can’t a monkey tame and ride a goat off into the proverbial evolutionary sunset? Things don’t get a whole lot less weird as ‘Encounters At The End of the World’ goes on, but that’s definitely not a bad thing. Officially directing now on all seven continents, Herzog brings us to Antarctica this time and more specifically to the McMurdo research base and its occupants.

Los Angeles Film Festival ’08 – Schedule Update 6/22

Global warming continues to try to kill everyone here with ridiculous heat, but so far so good on the festival lineup. Reviews for yesterday’s screenings will be up soon, while I tackle 3 more films today, along with the X-Files sneak peek panel for the upcoming movie. Would I rather see the actual film rather than some random clips? Yes, of course, which is why if it looks like its going to be a total bust, I’ll just try to catch something else. Only time will tell, stay tuned faithful readers.

WAMG First Look at Chronic Town

chronictown.JPG

One movie I am really excited about at Sundance is Chronic Town. I have been talking to the director Tom Hines and like what he is doing with this movie. Alot of you might not know about this movie, but here is a synopsis from the presskit:

“Truman Korovin is a lonely, sharp-witted cab driver in Fairbanks, Alaska. The usual routine of
picking up fares and spending his nights at his favorite bar, the Boatel, is disrupted when his
girlfriend Emily dumps him on one of the coldest nights of the year. An acid trip seems like a
good idea to help numb the pain, but when the trip goes sour, Truman winds up in the local
‘loony bin’ on what looks like a suicide attempt. During his stay, Truman spends time with an
issue-laden therapy group where he gets re-acquainted with one of his old cab fares, a local
stripper named Eleanor. He also befriends Elizabeth, an amusing old lady from the Seniors
Home, as part of his therapy. Although his trip to the bin seems like a brief detour in his life,
Eleanor and Elizabeth open up a new world to Truman. It might not always be a better world,
but it’s a new one; and the emotionally detached Truman finds himself right in the middle of it.
At a point in his life when Truman was ready to be a spectator, he may just find himself caring
enough to get back in the game.”

I am starting to become a big fan of JR Bourne, he hasnt been in alot of things, and I believe this is one of his first Starring roles, but this guy will be doing more great things after this movie.

Go check out the trailer at http://www.chronictownthemovie.com and if you are heading to Sundance put this one on your list.
