Todd Phillips Halfway Through Another HANGOVER

hangover

The wolf pack is just about ready to get a little bigger.  According to Entertainment Weekly, writer/director Todd Phillips is halfway done with writing a follow-up to the highly successful THE HANGOVER, which has, so far, made over $459 million worldwide.  That includes $277 million domestic, making it the highest grossing R-rated comedy in history.

Phillips explains to EW that plans for a sequel were already being bandied about while production on the first film was underway.

You always have those days when you say, ‘If we did another one, wouldn’t it be funny if…?’ Then once the movie tested so well, Warner Bros. came to me even before it was released  and said, ‘Let’s do another one.

While plot points for the sequel are being kept close to Phillips’ chest, he does say the film, tentatively titled THE HANGOVER 2, will reunite the trio of Zach Galifianakis, Bradley Cooper, and Ed Helms.  Phillips also says the new film won’t simply revisit the bachelor-party-gone-horribly-wrong scenario.

I think you can take those characters and put them in other situations, and you don’t need the sell of Vegas and a bachelor party and all that other stuff.

Phillips is currently shooting DUE DATE with Robert Downey Jr. Galifianakis, Jamie Foxx, and Michelle Monaghan.

What do you think?  Does the thought of a sequel to THE HANGOVER entice you?  Are you interested to see what craziness Phil, Alan, and Stu can get themselves into next?  Why do they call them roofies?  Shoot us an email below with your thoughts.

DVD Review: AMERICAN PIE: THE BOOK OF LOVE

american pie book of love

Why I kept watching the AMERICAN PIE series after the third film was beyond me. They all involved a member of the Stiffler family, and were all terrible. But for the first time since AMERICAN WEDDING, the series takes an upturn with a smaller, funnier film that only has a few truly dumb hiccups along the way.

THE BOOK OF LOVE is the first film since the original that doesn’t follow a member of the Stiffler family, and for that it deserves some credit. The Stiflers are obnoxious characters and every single one of them is just doing a bad impression of Seann William Scott’s performance of the original. It’s like they exist in some weird universe where every member of the family acts the exact same way, which is something I don’t think anyone can really relate to. The focus this time is on Rob (Bug Hall) and his buddies Lube (Youtube celebrity Brandon Hardesty) and Nathan (Kevin M. Horton).

The three guys are back in the same place our main characters were in the first film. This is a simple story about three guys trying to get laid. Bug Hall really does a great job of playing a regular guy who isn’t a jerk, but can make mistakes and he’s honestly funny. His intro actually got a chuckle out of me, and I let down my guard and legitimately enjoyed the film. Rob’s goal during the film is to get with his good friend Heidi (rookie actress Beth Behrs). When Rob finds out she’s a virgin he sort of makes a strange pact with her that they’ll have sex and be each other’s firsts. At a school’s luau themed dance they plan to meet in the library to have the big moment, but when he shows up she’s already there with another guy… the shock of the moment causes rob to fumble with a torch he stole from the party and that causes a fire in the library, which in turn causes the sprinkler system to go off, which in turn ruins may books.

Of course Rob and Heidi are forced to clean up the mess after they’re caught, Heidi shirtless, and Rob obviously the cause of the trouble. While Rob is cleaning up everything he discovers… The Bible. No not the Genesis to Revelations book, but rather the book we know from the earlier films! That’s right, this AMERICAN PIE actually has a plot device that ties into the other films, rather than being a cheap cash in on the AMERICAN PIE name! It’s almost like they hired a writer who knew what he was doing… oh that’s right they DID!

This is the first film of the straight to DVD AMERICAN PIE films to be written by a person who wrote any of the original trilogy. This time around it’s David H. Steinberg who wrote the story for AMERICAN PIE 2, which while not as good as the first, was definitely better than AMERICAN WEDDING, and leagues above the rest. His touch brings the spirit of the film back to where the first two films were.

The plot Steinberg comes up with involves Rob and his friend’s trying to figure out how to get laid by deciphering the ruined pages of The Bible, but soon find that without everything in the book in perfect condition, much of the advice is terrible on it’s own and they set out to repair it, starting with the first guy who wrote in it, Noah Levenstein played once again by Eugene Levy.

The supporting cast is pretty good too, Brandon Hardesty’s first performance in a film is a little too Jonah Hill-esque but it’s still very funny at times. His character is often trying to trick women into sleeping with him and he’s always fantasizing about any hot girl just standing by him. These fantasies are often hot and extremely funny. As for Kevin Horton, he’s more of the stable reliable friend.

Sadly the worst part of this movie is anything involving Stifler, played by John Patrick Gordon, who’s constantly doing a bad impression of the Seann William Scott original once again. I legitimately hated him, which is supposed to be the point, but I’d prefer if he was cut from the film entirely. There have been so many different people playing a Stifler family member that they all blend together now

But when it comes to AMERICAN PIE there’s always been one thing that the films are about and a reason many young men set out to see them and that’s the sex, the nudity and the gross out humor and it’s all here. Many of the women are INSANELY beautiful, and sure high school students with breast implants are a rarity in the real world, but this is the world of AMERICAN PIE! It’s about as far from real as STAR WARS. School trips with strip poker and no teachers don’t happen in real life, but you can dream right?

THE BOOK OF LOVE isn’t a perfect movie, and by no means should you run out and buy it, but if you rent it, catch it on cable, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. For the first time it actually feels like the AMERICAN PIE torch has been passed on to a future generation of characters that are actually likable. There are some some what familiar faces and relatives of characters like the incredibly beautiful Nadia from the original’s cousin, who is equally as beautiful and has a terrible accent just like Shannon Elizabeth (what happened to her?!) I give AMERICAN PIE PRESENTS: THE BOOK OF LOVE a very remarkable 3 out of 5 stars. Against all odds director John Putch (SCRUBS) and the AMERICAN PIE series made a decent comedy.

ZOMBIELAND 3-D is a Lose/Lose Situation

top10_zombieland

ZOMBIELAND was a near-perfect zombie picture that offered as many laughs as it did thrills, and, overall, it was one of the most entertaining times at the theater all year.  Now comes word from Moviehole that a sequel is not only planned, it is definite.  To that, I simply say, “Why?”  Leave the first film alone.  Leave the first film’s ending alone.  I’m going to get into some spoiler territory here on the first ZOMBIELAND, so, if you haven’t seen it, you may want to divert your eyeballs elsewhere.

Seeing Columbus, Tallahassee, Wichita, and Little Rock drive off into the proverbial sunset after escaping the onslaught of zombies is a picture-perfect ending.  I was so fearful near the end of ZOMBIELAND that some of them might not make it, it was such a sigh of relief when, indeed, they all did.  I know this was initially planned as a pilot episode for a series, but that didn’t happen.  The film that was left in its place was a perfect, little one-shot, and no amount of money means we deserve another go at these characters.

Unfortunately, if and when a sequel does come out, that means a few things story-wise:

  1. More survivors – I don’t want to see more survivors.  These four and Bill Murray were perfectly simple and perfectly effective.  Having the quartet come upon a whole other group of survivors would just seem obvious and wasteful.
  2. More zombies – It’s a sequel.  We have to up the ante, right?  That means a ton more zombies.  At some point, it’s going to feel like, excuse the pun, overkill.  The group they faced at the end of the first film was just the right size.
  3. More threats of character death – I like all four of these characters.  Putting them into a whole new film means any one of them could get taken out, and that, I don’t like one bit.

Let’s just brush past the idea that this sequel is going to be 3-D.  I’m not shy in expressing my deep hatred for the over-usage of 3-D technology.  It’s pointless, and, more often than not, it’s distracting.

Of course, director Ruben Fleischer, and writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick could come up with something that makes a ZOMBIELAND sequel just as successful as well as just as much fun as the first film.  We shall see.  For now, I say this is a lose/lose situation on all counts.

Trailer for Zhang Yimou’s BLOOD SIMPLE Remake Hits

amazing tales three guns

There’s arrows.  There’s cannons.  There’s explosions.  There’s wackiness.  What more could you ask for in a remake to the Coen Brothers’ BLOOD SIMPLE.  Just going off this new trailer, you wouldn’t think it has anything to do with the 1984 original, but it’s in there.

AMAZING TALES: THREE GUNS is directed by Zhang Yimou, who brought us HERO and HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS, and it looks like it offers just about everything that made those films such instant classics.

Check it out:

Yimou has stated that BLOOD SIMPLE is one of his all-time favorite films, so I have no doubt that he is going to capture the mood and underlying themes of that film with this picture.  The film will, evidently, be cut into two segments, a thriller segment and a comedic segment, with two pairs of actors playing the lead roles in each segment.

Now, if someone could just get M. Emmet Walsh to wield one of those swords, we be in business.

A release is set in China for December 11th.  Expect it to hit American theaters somewhere in the middle of 2010.

Massive Cast In a GROWN UP Trailer

grown ups

You gotta believe in too much of a good thing when you see the new trailer for GROWN UPS.  It comes to us today courtesy of Columbia Pictures.  Starring Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Kevin James, David Spade and Rob Schneider (okay, those last two might not be so much “good” as “blatantly adequate”), the film just looks like overkill, and you can read “short change” all over the place.  We’ll see for sure in time, and, admittedly, this isn’t director Dennis Dugan’s first endeavor into helming a film.

For now, all we have to go on is this trailer.  Check it out for yourself:

GROWN-UPS hits theaters on June 25th.

SLAMMIN’ SALMON’s Messy Poster

slammin salmon poster header

“Bring a Bib, It’s Gonna Get Messy.”

The tagline at the bottom says it all.  This new poster for Broken Lizard’s latest comedy, THE SLAMMIN’ SALMON, courtesy of the people over at  IMP Awards, it pretty messy.  It features the mainstays of the cast including Michael Clarke Duncan’s Cleon ‘Slammin’ Salmon towering over the other guys.  However, this, much like that horrendous poster for TAKERS, looks like a Photoshop job gone horribly wrong.  About the only thing about this that looks natural in any sense of the word is the fresh fish Jay Chandrasekhar is presenting to us.

Check it out right here:

SS_1SHT_fnl.indd

This is kind of a shame when you consider the professional-looking and, more often than not, involved posters the Broken Lizard films have generated in the past.  Nonetheless, you should check out the film when it hits theaters later this year.  While it’s not as good as their previous entries (most of that lays at the feet of first-time director Kevin Heffernan) it’s still head and shoulders above a lot of what passes for comedy these days.

THE SLAMMIN’ SALMON is set for release on December 11th.

Review: THE MEN WHO STARE AT GOATS – He Said/She Said

I’d like to introduce you all to our newest hosts of He Said/She Said. John Cooper and Leah Ducey. Enjoy their review of THE MEN WHO STARE AT GOATS.

John: Want to know what movie The Men Who Stare At Goats reminds me of the most, and not just because it came out a few months ago?

Leah:   Uhm. Can I have a hint?

John:   We saw it together. It featured a similarly sluggish plot, but had about as many laughs, and to be honest I’ve forgotten most of it. Which is sort of what I expect to see happening with Grant Heslov’s new movie. And similarly to this instance, we sat in the front row, with our necks craned back at 90 degree angles, because we showed up 5 minutes late. Because we’re idiots.

Leah:   AHHHH. The Informant!

John:   Indeed!

Leah:   We were casually late.

John:   But we really didn’t miss much. Because it seems that every bit of setup for Goats was stuffed into the trailer, preparing it to hit the ground running. Which it didn’t. It just stood there. Like a goat.

Leah: I gotta tell ya, though, I feel like Goats got better with time where I felt like The Informant! only got less focused as it progressed.

John:   I can’t agree with that. Where The Informant! buried its funny little asides and nonsensical stories into the action via Matt Damon’s bizarre narration, Heslov just forces us back and forth between flashbacks and reporter Bob Wilton’s (Ewan McGregor) journeys with the Jedi warrior Lyn Cassady (George Clooney). The problem is that the flashbacks (actually, just Jeff Bridges as First Earth Battalion founder Bill Django) carry all the momentum of the film, while Clooney and McGregor are left to plod around in the sand.

Leah:   Despite all that, I still feel like it got gradually better. I mean, at first I was just chuckling along with the audience for the sake of comrade. I’ll admit, it did drag quite a bit while they were trudging along in the sand before the flashbacks really got off the ground. But once they did, the rest of the film was jam-packed with sincere laughter, at least on my part. Especially a certain scene involving young Lyn Cassady being berated by his father while attempting to do the Twist.

John:   It’s not that the movie isn’t funny. It’s got plenty of laughs, but they’re the disposable chuckles, like you said, that can be tossed away upon your exit. There’s a lot more wasted potential — I’m thinking of a certain Jeff Bridges and Kevin Spacey. Hell, even Clooney looked like he needed more to do. There were too many dead moments, too much dead air. And just when things started to get really interesting — the turn that Bridges’ character takes in the last third of the film, as Django turns to alcoholism, is really remarkable — it’s almost done.

What did you think of Bridges? I thought his performance was actually pretty stellar, like a mix of The Dude from The Big Lebowski and his villainous performance in Iron Man — a hippie bastard child.

Leah:   Lest you forget, I have still never seen The Big Lebowski. It’s currently sitting in the corner of the room begging to be watched. I agree with you though, I was expecting much more out of Clooney as well as McGregor. Bridges, on the other hand, was absolutely superb. Did you ever watch Rocket Power on Nickelodeon as a kid? He’s a lot like Tito. The stern Military Man exterior is just a front to conceal his inner flower-picking, yoga-doing, teddy-bear-cuddling self. Which, I’m rather glad he lets shine through, revealing more than a handful of laugh-out-loud antics.

John:   I’m going to pretend I didn’t read that first sentence. You don’t know Jeff Bridges until you’ve seen Lebowski. And Tron.

You liked The Men Who Stare at Goats, though? You’d recommend it?

Leah:   Oh, definitely. It was a feel-good movie with a solid cast and interesting plot. It takes a totally different approach to the psychic and paranormal world: one which is intriguing while still being laughable, and I think the filmmakers are able to ride a fine line between making the “Jedi” silly and sympathetic. I can’t say I’ve ever seen a film with an idea quite like it; I suppose I have Jon Ronson to thank for that. I sort of want to find a goat and try this stuff out.

John:   I’m certain that that’s what Ronson  intended in writing this— making people purchase farm animals.

Leah:   I already have farm animals! Getting goats would top it all off.

John:   I don’t know, though. I guess I’d recommend it, but not for lasting appeal. This really had potential — a solid cast with a great concept, it just doesn’t take off at any point. Clooney’s set to take theaters again in December with Up In The Air, and from what I hear that’s quite a superior movie.

Leah:   So what would you rate this movie on a scale of 1 to 10?

Me:   I’d give it a 6.5 — it’s worthy of seeing just for a pretty great turn by Bridges, who surprisingly outdoes both leads. It’s just too bad that most of the players are so limp here, and those who do turn in good performances are just shunned, like Spacey.

Leah:   I’d give it a 7 or a 7.5. It was entertaining and lighthearted, and that’s really all that some people are after in a night at the movies. I’d recommend it on that basis, but I’d agree with you that there’s potential here, wasted.

John:   Meh. I’m just crossing my fingers that Jason Reitman doesn’t let me down next month.

Leah:   That makes two of us.

GENTLEMEN BRONCOS Limited Release Shrinking As We Speak

gentleman broncos

It started as kind of a throw-away tweet from our friend Chase Whale:

GENTLEMEN BRONCOS is no longer opening in Dallas. Good thing we saw it at Fantastic Fest!

Then Roger Ebert got into the loop:

“Gentlemen Broncos” openings have been canceled in Chicago, and will go no wider than it is now

Evidently, it is official that Jared Hess’ new comedy, GENTLEMEN BRONCOS has reached the pique of its theatrical release-dom.   So far, the $10-million comedy has made just over $12,000 since it’s October 30th roll-out on two screens.   That’s right, if Jared Hess is raking in every, last cent his newest movie makes, he would have enough to buy a used Ford Focus.   Good for him.

Fox Searchlight, who is in charge of the film’s distribution, hasn’t released anything official, but it seems fairly obvious that the lack of interest in the theaters it is playing at and the poor abysmal word of mouth the film generated after its screening at Fantastic Fest are at play.   The film currently has a 12% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but that can’t really be factoring into the film’s poor box office percentages.

The debate on whether the film has any merit at all continues on Twitter, courtesy mostly of Chase and Moises Chiullan.   However, the funniest tweet thus far has come from our good buddy, Neil Miller from Film School Rejects, who had this to say:

The ‘Gentlemen Broncos is cancelled’ twitter-fire is hilarious. They should’ve cancelled it much earlier though, i.e. in pre-production..

and

It is, indeed, that bad.

TROPIC THUNDER Scribe Taking on MEN IN BLACK 3

men in black

With a $589 million worldwide take for the first film and a $441 million worldwide pull-in for the second, I am shocked beyond belief (and a little appreciative) that Sony never force-fed a third MEN IN BLACK film.  Granted, there were Saturday morning cartoons, video games, and amusement park rides to rake in some cash off the brand, but a third film, with or without Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones’ involvements, could have easily been thrown together years ago.

Well, those “years ago” have turned in to today, as Risky Biz Blog is reporting that TROPIC THUNDER screenwriter Etan Cohen is hard at work on a third film in the MEN IN BLACK franchise.  Sony officially announced the project back in April, but, since then, not much has moved on the project until now.

Though no deal has been set in stone, Risky Biz is also stating Barry Sonnenfeld, who helmed the first two films, is attached to the new film, though in what capacity they do not state.  When all is said and done, Sonnenfeld may just end up an executive producer, which, for all intents and purposes, is just an approval-giver for the new film.

This brings us to the big question surrounding this project.  Will Smith’s involvement in the MEN IN BLACK series is part and parcel for the success the first two films had.  Will he be back?  With a screenwriter such as Cohen, who has become a hot Hollywood commodity in the last, few years, on board, it does seem Sony isn’t looking to make this a fly-by-night operation.  To that, look for them to dish out all kinds of green to get Smith’s name back into the credit list.  Tommy Lee Jones, not so much, for a number of reasons.  His character could easily be written out, his involvement isn’t all that necessary for the success of the film, and, in recent years, it has appears Jones has gone on to more high-end projects, leaving the MEN IN BLACK and BATMAN FOREVER projects to the ’90s.

What do you think?  Is a MEN IN BLACK 3 right up your sci-fi geek alley?  Is there any chance Sony will able to lure Smith back to the project?  What do you think of Etan Cohen, whose screenplays include IDIOCRACY, TROPIC THUNDER, and MADAGASCAR: ESCAPE 2 AFRICA, working on the script for this film?  Let us know by commenting below.
