Fee-Fi-Fo-Fum: Here’s Comes The New JACK THE GIANT SLAYER Trailer And Poster

Giants! Beanstalks! Magic Beans! Ready for a epic adventure? Watch the Ian McKellen narrated, fantasy-filled trailer for director Bryan Singer’s JACK THE GIANT SLAYER.

JACK THE GIANT KILLER tells the story of an ancient war that is reignited when a young farmhand unwittingly opens a gateway between our world and a fearsome race of giants. Unleashed on the Earth for the first time in centuries, the giants strive to reclaim the land they once lost, forcing the young man, Jack, into the battle of his life to stop them. Fighting for a kingdom, its people, and the love of a brave princess, he comes face to face with the unstoppable warriors he thought only existed in legend – and gets the chance to become a legend himself.

A vast improvement over the teaser trailer we showed you last December when the film was scheduled for a June 2012 release. I really like the tailor-made cast. Nicholas Hoult (X-MEN: FIRST CLASS) as Jack, Eleanor Tomlinson as Princess Isabelle, Stanley Tucci (JULIE & JULIA) as the deceitful Lord Roderick, Ian McShane (PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES) as the besieged King Brahmwell, Bill Nighy (HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS) as the giants’ leader General Fallon and Ewan McGregor (THE IMPOSSIBLE) as palace guard Elmont.

Singer reassembled some of the people he likes to work with best for this 3D movie. The screenplay comes from Singer’s long-time collaborator Christopher McQuarrie. The two previously worked on THE USUAL SUSPECTS and VALKYRIE, while the creative filmmaking team includes director of photography Newton Thomas Sigel (X-MEN, SUPERMAN RETURNS) and editor John Ottman (X2, SUPERMAN RETURNS).

Along with scribe McQuarrie, the screenplay is also by Darren Lemke (SHREK FOREVER AFTER) and Dan Studney, with a story by Darren Lemke & David Dobkin. I’m absolutely mad over the look of the film too – the production designer is Gavin Bocquet (STAR WARS: EPISODE III – REVENGE OF THE SITH). Singer filmed his new take on the fairytale on location in and around London.

From Warner Bros Pictures, JACK THE GIANT KILLER stomps into theaters in RealD 3D and IMAX 3D on March 1st.

RED DAWN – The Review

If you’re anything like me, the first thought in your head when you heard about the remake of the 1984 classic RED DAWN was to shrug it off thinking “whatever.” Then, as the film is completed and nearing release, we hear that instead of being invaded by the Russians like the original — which is entirely understandable — or, as a way to update the story, invaded by the Chinese, which was the original plan, it turns out we’re being invaded by North Korea. Exactly. My first thought was… [scoff] “Yeah, right. How does that work?”

[Biting my tongue…] As it turns out, it works rather well. Surprised? I am. RED DAWN (2012) is, structurally, more or less loosely the same film as the 1984 original. I mean, when it comes down to brass tacks, both films are about the U.S. being caught off guard by a surprise invasion from a Communist enemy, occupied, then ultimately saved by a band of unlikely heroes. The difference is in the details. Instead of the Soviet Union, we’re invaded by North Korea… but, with some help from a couple of all-too-familiar [and previously mentioned] forces with a common goal. Nonetheless, the U.S. initially gets its ass handed to them, making the struggle to fight back all the more exciting.

Dan Bradley directs this modern retelling of the Cold War classic. Bradley is a stunt man with an extensive resume, stepping behind the camera as director for the first time. Its my theory that his time spent throwing punches, dodging bullets and taking falls are a significant factor in establishing the kind of realistic, modestly-paced action we get in RED DAWN. The film opens on a local high school football game, featuring the hometown Wolverines — from which the soon-to-be-realized American rebels get their name — and sets up the character profile for one of our two main heroes.

Josh Peck (THE WACKNESS) plays the star high school quarterback with an attitude, Matt Eckert, who must overcome his own selfishness and realize that in order to survive — ironically — he must learn to be a team player. Chris Hemsworth (THOR, THE AVENGERS) plays Matt’s older brother Jed, the more responsible of the two and a Marine on leave. Isabel Lucas (IMMORTALS) plays Erica, Matt’s sweetheart who is both the driving force for Matt’s fight against the invaders and the potential undoing of their small band of freedom fighters.

RED DAWN spends just enough time introducing characters and setting up back story, then throws the viewer head first into the invasion. The title of the film is no random choice, as the Communist, or “Red” invaders parachute from a legion of bombers into the Pacific Northwest. In our case, we witness what unfolds in Spokane, Washington as Matt and Jed wake to find North Korean soldiers have quickly taken control of their town, complete with fully armed soldiers, military vehicles and a barrage of exploding houses throughout the neighborhood. What little CGI is visibly present in this film, appears during the initial takeover, but is done so with a sense of holding back, not to exceed any suspension of disbelief, but actually causes a noticeable sense of dread and patriotism in the viewer.

As the viewer becomes attached to certain characters and distrustful of others, the film leads us through this devastating turn of events without ever sensationalizing them. RED DAWN is a violent, sometimes graphic film, but is never gratuitous. The characters are written in a way that we care about them, we want to see them succeed, even the ones who clearly have their priorities skewed. Adrianne Palicki, Josh Hutcherson, and Connor Cruise round out the primary cast, forming the core of the rebel Fighters known as the Wolverines. Jeffrey Dean Morgan makes a welcome casting addition as Col. Andy Tanner, a Marine pulled out of retirement in the latter half of the film.

At one point, RED DAWN actually pokes fun at itself, but does so innocently by allowing Matt to reveal how ignorant he is to the current state of world affairs. Despite the opening title sequence revealing a well-crafted and much appreciated montage of world news broadcasts and the like, Matt fails to grasp the scope of events leading up to the North Korean invasion when he asks “How is that possible?” This all becomes clear, not only for Matt, but for an otherwise potentially skeptical audience. In fact, the premise of this remake is perhaps even more realistic and terrifying than that of the 1984 original.

Unlike so many films that shove a sort of uber-patriotism down our throats, RED DAWN delivers an easily digestible dose of patriotic storytelling that pleases the pallet, while still succeeding and it’s primary goal of entertaining the audience. RED DAWN offers a strong story, but one that’s not overly complicated; a satisfying portion of realistic action that never goes over-the-top; and a decent helping of relationship side story to please the female perspective without overwhelming the rest of the film.

Overall Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

RED DAWN opens nationwide in theaters on Wednesday, November 21st, 2012.

A LATE QUARTET – The Review

Review by Barbara Snitzer

Don’t let the A-list cast, the subject matter, or the marketing campaign deceive you. As the plot involves a classical music quartet, you will think you’re the intended demographic. You’re smart, you listen to classical music on your local NPR station, you go to the movies to see intelligent dramas like this, not Anchorman, right? Stay strong!……….

Check Out The New, Creepy EVIL DEAD Poster And Photo – You’ve Been Warned

Show of hands. Who wants to to become a deadite? No one? At least give a “hell yes” to the first poster for Sam Raimi’s EVIL DEAD. (via Yahoo! Movies)I’m actually looking forward to this remake – can’t be any better or worse than the original movie. In their 1981 review warning the viewer about the guts and gore, Siskel and Ebert said “if you want to see twice ground, ground beef… go to a butcher shop.” If only reviews were as clever these days.

In the remake of the cult-hit horror film, five twenty-something friends become holed up in a remote cabin. When they discover a Book of the Dead, they unwittingly summon up dormant demons living in the nearby woods, which possess the youngsters in succession until only one is left intact to fight for survival.

The EVIL DEAD cast includes Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Jessica Lucas, and Elizabeth Blackmore.

From the creators of the horror classic, Rob Tapert, Sam Raimi, and Bruce Campbell,
EVIL DEAD
will be in theaters April 12, 2013.

New Poster For Marlon Wayans’ A HAUNTED HOUSE Arrives

Do these guys above look like they can face ghosts in a haunted house? I’ll let you decide. Open Road Films has released the new poster for Marlon Wayans’ comedy – A HAUNTED HOUSE – in theaters on January 11th. A HAUNTED HOUSE (starring Marlon Wayans, Essence Atkins, Cedric The Entertainer, Nick Swardson, David Koechner and Affion Crocket) is an outrageous homage to Paranormal Activity, The Devil Inside and other hauntingly-creepy “found footage” movies.

A HAUNTED HOUSE features young couple Malcolm (Marlon Wayans) and Kisha (Essence Atkins) who have just moved in to their dream house. As they settle in, they quickly find they’re not alone. But it’s not the house that’s haunted, it’s Malcolm’s girlfriend who is possessed by a demon. Malcolm hires everyone from a priest to modern day ghostbusters to rid her of this unwelcome intruder, determined not to let the evil spirit ruin his relationship… or, more importantly, his sex life.

It’s that time of year… Happy Thanksgiving from Fox Searchlight’s HITCHCOCK! Send your family and friends a Hitchcock-themed Thanksgiving e-card and be thankful that the film will be opening in select theaters this Friday, November 23rd. It’s a entertaining and clever telling of how PSYCHO was made.

Create Your Hitchcock E-Card: http://www.hitchcockthanksgiving.com

Skip the Black Friday madness and discover the shocking truth behind a film that will make history once again. Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren star in Sacha Gervasi’s mind opening portrayal of a legendary couple who together created an art form and story like never before.

For the first time, director Sacha Gervasi’s HITCHCOCK tells the making of the spine-tingling 1960 thriller, PSYCHO, which would become the director’s most controversial and legendary film. When the tumultuous, against-the-odds production was over, nothing about movies would ever be the same – but few realized that it took two to pull it off. Gervasi and a cast that includes Academy Award® winners Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren starring as Alfred and Alma spin a story rife with surprises, comic ironies and dark twists in the Hitchockian tradition. But at the heart of the film lies not only the obsessions and fears of two people but the distinctively tenacious love that drove Hitchcock’s art behind the curtain.

Fox Searchlight Pictures presents, in association with Cold Spring Pictures, a Montecito Picture Company and Barnette/Thayer production, HITCHCOCK directed by Sacha Gervasi with a screenplay by John J. McLaughlin based on the book Alfred Hitchcock and The Making of Psycho by Stephen Rebello.

The film also stars Scarlett Johansson as Janet Leigh, Toni Collette as Peggy Robertson, Danny Huston as Whitfield Cook, Jessica Biel as Vera Miles, Michael Stuhlbarg as agent Lew Wasserman, James D’Arcy as Anthony Perkins, Michael Wincott as Ed Gein, Kurtwood Smith as Geoffrey Shurlock and Richard Portnow as Barney Balaban. The film is produced by Ivan Reitman, Tom Pollock, Joe Medjuck, Tom Thayer and Alan Barnette, with Ali Bell and Richard Middleton as executive producers.

The creative team includes two-time Academy Award-nominated director of photography Jeff Cronenweth, ASC (THE SOCIAL NETWORK, THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO), Academy Award-nominated film editor Pamela Martin, A.C.E (THE FIGHTER), production designer Judy Becker (THE FIGHTER), two-time Academy Award-nominated costume designer Julie Weiss (FRIDA, TWELVE MONKEYS), music by four-time Academy Award-nominated Danny Elfman (GOOD WILL HUNTING, MILK), and special makeup effects by Academy Award winner Howard Berger (THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA) & Gregory Nicotero.

HITCHCOCK opens in select theaters beginning November 23rd.

LINCOLN Wishes You A Safe And Happy Thanksgiving

As America prepares for the holiday on Thursday, the film LINCOLN wishes you a Happy Thanksgiving. It’s the must-see film of the year. Read Jim Batts review HERE.

In the final four months of Abraham Lincoln’s life and presidency, the full measure of the man—his passion and his humanity—came to bear on his defining battle: to plot a forward path for a shattered nation, against overwhelming odds and extreme public and personal pressure.

Steven Spielberg’s LINCOLN provides an intimate immersion into the American leader’s most perilous and revealing moments, at a time when the dark shadow of slavery lifts and a country torn by war must be made whole.

A rich human drama plays out as Lincoln doubles down to end the devastating Civil War not merely by ending the war but by fighting to pass the 13th Amendment, permanently abolishing slavery. It will be an act of true national daring. He will have to call upon all the skill, courage and moral fortitude for which he’ll become legend. He will grapple with the impact of his actions on the world and on those he loves. But what lies in the balance is what always mattered most to Lincoln: to compel the American people, and those in his government of opposite persuasions, to alter course and aim higher, toward a greater good for all mankind.

Brought to life via a layered screenplay by Pulitzer Prize winner Tony Kushner, Spielberg’s starkly human storytelling and the performance of Daniel Day-Lewis leading an accomplished cast, the film invites audiences directly into the heart and soul of Lincoln’s final achievements. The Lincoln who emerges is a man of raw paradoxes: funny and solemn, a playful storyteller and fierce power broker, a shrewd commander and a vulnerable father. But in his nation’s darkest hour, when the times demand the very best of people, he reaches from within himself for something powerful and everlasting.

The Actresses Roundtable: Sally Field, Helen Hunt, Marion Cotillard, Anne Hathaway, Amy Adams, Naomi Watts and Rachel Weisz

From left to right: Helen Hunt, (The Sessions); Rachel Weisz, (The Deep Blue Sea); Marion Cotillard, (Rust and Bone); Naomi Watts, (The Impossible); Anne Hathaway, (Les Miserables); Amy Adams, (The Master, Trouble With the Curve); and Sally Field,  (Lincoln). Courtesy The Hollywood Reporter.

This is the time when most Oscar season watchers truly put their Awards Season hats on. I always look forward to The Hollywood Reporter’s annual Awards Roundtable – especially the actresses – and this is an exceptional year for women’s performances. THRs news editor Matt Belloni and executive editor Stephen Galloway interviewed these seven strong, intelligent, beautiful women on what it takes to get through the various Award shows, their thoughts on their current films and fighting the good fight to get the roles.

As a woman what I found to be most interesting is their collegial respect for each other as well as the reverential looks toward two-time Oscar winner Sally Field by the other actresses. As well they should. As a mother myself what I empathetically embraced is their passionate protectiveness of their children  – especially from the intrusion of the paparazzi.

With Jessica Chastain’s ZERO DARK THIRTY still unseen, bet on hearing three or four of these women’s names when the nominations are announced January 10, 2013. I would have loved for Judi Dench, Helen Mirren, Jennifer Lawrence and Keira Knightley to have been in the mix and hearing their thoughts on the topics discussed during the hour-long interview.

SEEKING ASIAN FEMALE, SISTER Win EDA Awards At 2012 St. Louis International Film Festival

Adopt Films

After 11 days of glorious and galvanizing cinema-going, the 21st Annual St. Louis International Film Festival (SLIFF) concluded on Sunday evening. At the closing ceremony the International Alliance of Women Film Journalists (AWFJ) presented awards to four women filmmakers. AWFJ President Jennifer Merin and myself were on hand to announce our winners – chosen by a panel of AWFJ members.

Ursula Meier’s SISTER received the EDA for Best Female-Directed Narrative Feature, while Debbie Lum’s SEEKING ASIAN FEMALE took the EDA for Best Female-Directed Documentary. The narrative feature FOUND MEMORIES, directed by Julia Marat, and the documentary THE WORLD BEFORE HER, directed by Nisha Pahuja, received Special Mentions from their respective juries.

SLIFF Executive Director Cliff Froehlich said, “Dating back to the silent era, women have been vital contributors to film art, but they have long been underrepresented and underappreciated in the industry. Thankfully, that situation is changing, and the number of women filmmakers has grown exponentially in recent years. SLIFF believes it’s important to shine a spotlight on their increasing role, and the EDA Awards are an excellent means of acknowledging the diverse works that contemporary women filmmakers are directing.”

Set at a luxurious Swiss ski resort, Ursula Meier’s SISTER is the story of a woman supported by her 12 year-old brother’s petty thefts, until the child starts to lose his bearings in the company of a dangerous stranger. It is a gripping drama about children who have to grow up fast. With surprising plot twists, an exceptional lead performance by the young Kacy Mottet Klein and excellent hand-held cinematography by Agnes Godard, the film is original, timely and beautifully-observed.

In SEEKING ASIAN FEMALE, documentarian Debbie Lum goes in pursuit of “yellow fever,” following a middle-aged Caucasian man who lives out his fantasy of marrying a younger woman from China, with surprising results. The film is an engaging look at the objectification and stereotyping of women, with revelations that defy expectations. Lum’s funny, charming movie showed this year at the 13th Annual San Diego Asian Film Festival and the South by Southwest Film Festival.

According to AWFJ President Jennifer Merin, “SLIFF is one of the country’s top regional showcases for independent and international film, and it has been a delight to collaborate with them and to honor them for presenting such an exciting slate of films by and about women.”

This year, AWFJ expanded its outreach to audiences by presenting EDA Awards at select festivals. The St. Louis International Film Festival is the third such partnership, following programs at the Salem Film Fest in Massachusetts in March, and at Sheffield Doc/Fest in England in June. AWFJ, an organization of top women film journalists and critics from across the U.S, Canada and UK, will distribute in December a full slate of EDA Awards recognizing the year’s best (and worst) films by and about women.
