On Saturday night, WWF’s Earth Hour broke all records in its eighth year, as Spider-Man joined millions of everyday super heroes from across the world in the world’s largest celebration for the planet.

The event that has evolved into the world’s largest movement for the planet began its journey across more than 154 countries and territories from New Zealand, swept across Asia with Spider-Man and the cast from the upcoming film THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 , including Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone and Jamie Foxx, sending a message to the world that anyone can be a super hero for the planet from the global flagship Earth Hour event from WWF-Singapore.

For their part, director Marc Webb and producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach ensured that THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 was produced in line with ambitious environmental best practices, ultimately delivering the most eco-friendly tentpole ever produced under the Columbia Pictures banner.

WWF’s Earth Hour event in Singapore saw lights switched off across the famous Marina Bay skyline, joined the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House, the Bird’s Nest in Beijing, Taipei 101, The Wat Arun Buddhist Temple in Bangkok, the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur and more that took part in the global celebration for the planet.

In Australia, a massive candle lit display on the lawn of Parliament House in Canberra spelled out, ‘It’s Lights Out For The Reef’ as thousands across the country witnessed a special documentary about the impact of climate change on the threatened natural wonder the Great Barrier Reef.

“Tonight Earth Hour will be celebrated by every continent, and people in every corner of the world will be reaching across boundaries of culture, politics, race and religion to acknowledge the power we all have when we come together for this incredible planet. Earth Hour and lights off is a powerful reminder that we can help to deliver the solutions towards creating a more sustainable future for the planet,” said Andy Ridley, CEO and CoFounder of Earth Hour.

As the lights switched off at India Gate, the beyond the hour focus for children was felt with WWF-India’s year-long education campaign for a monumental 15,000 schools across India who switched off for Earth Hour and switched on to more energy efficient practices.

Swayambhunath Temple in Kathmandu came alive for Earth Hour, as WWF-Nepal kickstarted their target of reaching 500,000 people in the country to lead environmental change through The Generation Green Campaign.

Jamie Foxx who plays Electro in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, said “It’s time to conserve, protect, and enjoy this planet of ours. Never underestimate your power, never underestimate what you can do.”

Last night in Chicago, which represented the U.S. as World Wildlife Fund’s 2014 Earth Hour Capital, Spider-Man helped to flip the ceremonial switch to turn off the lights in the city as guests were able to learn about how they can be a super hero for the planet by taking actions to realize the goal of a sustainable Chicago.

Participating landmarks in Chicago included Willis Tower, John Hancock Center, and portions of Navy Pier.

TASM2_CHI_EA-10

This year, WWF-Nepal also had the enlisted the help of none other than Spider-Man himself to support their Earth Hour Blue crowdfunding project, ‘A Flame Called Hope’. This project supported by Andrew Garfield aims to provide clean biogas energy to villages in Nepal’s Terai Arc.

“Earth Hour is a fantastic movement that has been created about conservation of our planet, which is something that should be on the top of our list as human beings. Let’s remember that the Earth is not ours, we are of this Earth. We all have a responsibility to each other in preserving our home, so it’s amazing to be a part of Earth Hour to help send that message,” said Andrew Garfield.

Earth Hour was trending worldwide, with participants sharing their event experience and commitment for the planet across social media platforms that connected the world.

At the heart of the movement’s digital growth is Indonesia, where Earth Hour has become a massive, year-round youth led movement enlisting the support of more than 1.5 million people across more than 31 cities in the country. Creating simple and creative environmental actions through film, performances, social media and public gatherings, the teams promote environmental activities related to saving electricity, reduction in use of plastic, using less paper and tissue, planting more trees and using public transportation throughout the year.

“Earth Hour is much more than an hour. Every person can do their part no matter how big or small to save the planet,” said Emma Stone.

This year saw Earth Hour launch a new crowdfunding and crowdsourcing platform for the Planet, asking people to use their power to back a project or add their voice to solution based environmental projects across the world.

From donating to build climate smart fiberglass boats for Typhoon Haiyan affected fishermen in the Philippines, to giving Rangers in Indonesia better equipment to protect the forests and wildlife of Borneo and Sumatra and even helping fund indigenous communities in Colombia to generate sustainable means of livelihood that prevents deforestation in the Amazon – Earth Hour called on participants across the world to be super heroes for the Planet by getting involved in Earth Hour Blue when the lights came back on.

“I’m delighted to see that the Earth Hour Blue crowd-funding platform is seeing real results,” said Director General Designate, Dr Marco Lambertini. “The WWF-Singapore led effort to fight wildlife crime in Southeast Asia has reached its minimum target from people who contributed online. Thanks to this funding, we can now start monitoring and providing emergency cover for families of rangers who have perished in the line of duty.”

Earth Hour went on to hit the Middle East, Africa and Europe, where the Temple of Karnak in Luxor switched off for the first time, joining the Great Pyramids of Giza, the world’s tallest building Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the Kremlin and Red Square in Moscow, South Africa’s Table Mountain, St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, The Eiffel Tower in Paris, La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Buckingham Palace in London, Edinburgh Castle in Scotland before the hour of inspiration made its way across the Atlantic toSouth America.

There, the Christ the Redeemer (statue) in Rio de Janeiro, The Angel of Independence in Mexico City were key landmarks that took part in the continent, and The Empire State Building and Times Square in New York City, Niagara Falls, Los Angeles International Airport, the Las Vegas Strip and more joined in the world’s largest celebration for the planet from North America, before Earth Hour wrapped up on the island of Tahiti in French Polynesia.

Earth Hour in 2014 saw the completion of the shift from event to movement status across the world, with the celebration cementing its place as a platform for beyond the hour activities for amazing environmental outcomes to protect parts of the planet including the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, the Arctic in Finland and the Amazon Rainforest in Colombia.

The focus on outcomes was inspired by Earth Hour’s success in past years that led to better legislation through the Russian Parliament to protect seas from oil pollution, the creation of a 3.4 million hectare marine protected area in Argentina and the world’s first Earth Hour Forest in Uganda to fight against massive deforestation in the country. All of these outcomes were powered by the crowd, showing that change for the planet can be achieved when the individual and collective realizes their power.

People were encouraged to use their power by backing a project or add their voice at www.earthhour.org and sharing their #EarthHour activities on Instagram.

From script to screen, the environmental efforts in the making of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 have been supported at every level and made the film the most eco-friendly tentpole in the studio’s history. Sony Pictures has extended these efforts in making the production and publicity tour carbon neutral, as well as “EcoSpidey” external outreach with a sizzle reel, game and Twitter campaign. Internally, the studio co-developed a unique online experience for employees to learn about Earth Hour and take action with the partnership, which has been made available to hundreds of thousands of employees at over 14 of the world’s largest corporations, powered by Practically Green.

We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead.

It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city.

With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp.

The film also stars Campbell Scott, Embeth Davidtz, Colm Feore, with Paul Giamatti and Sally Field.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 will be in theaters May 2, 2014.

Joss Whedon Send Message To Seoul, South Korea Citizens As Shooting Begins on Marvel’s AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON (Video)

joss whedon

As Director Joss Whedon begins photography on AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, he sent out this video to those living in Seoul, South Korea that things may get a little noisy.

Producer Kevin Feige, p.g.a., of Marvel’s upcoming CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER (in theaters Friday, April 4) discusses how it relates to AGE OF ULTRON.

“CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER was set up to be the Phase 2 lynchpin between MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS and AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON. The Marvel Cinematic Universe changes dramatically by the end of the film, and that was by design.”

“We really wanted Captain America to be responsible for altering the Cinematic Universe so that when we meet all of our characters at the beginning of “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” things are very different than when we left the characters at the end of “Marvel’s The Avengers” and partially that’s the experience Tony Stark went through in “Iron Man 3” and partially that’s the experience of what Thor went through in “Thor: The Dark World,” but primarily it’s because of the adventure that Captain America goes on in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.”

NYMPHOMANIAC : VOLUME I – The Review

Shia_LaBeouf_as_JEROME_a_p

Lars von Trier’s NYMPHOMANIAC : VOLUME 1 is a powerful, comedic drama that goes where few (non-pornography) theatrical films have gone before.

NYMPHOMANIAC : VOLUME 1 introduces us Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourge) as she opens up about her early upbringing to a stranger named Seligman (Stellan Skarsgard) who has found her bloody and beaten in an ally. After cleaning her up and offering her a bed to rest in, Joe begins the story of how she came to be in that alley – a story full a young Joe (played by Stacy Martin) discovering her body, sexuality, and eventually… love.

As the tale goes on, Seligman begins to relate her stories to the only things that he can – fly fishing, art, numbers etc. He listens intently as Joe opens up about the best, and worst times of her life without judgement or prejudice. But remember, we’ve only heard half of the story.

At first glance, most people assume that Lars von Trier is going to fill this film with a ton of pornographic, sexually explicit acts. Despite the pounding music and flashy images that the trailers showcase… those people would be wrong. Although there are sex scenes that beg the question as to whether the actors were actually having sex (which they are not according multiple accounts from the actors during their recent press tour), the film did not make such graphic scenes a habit. Also, graphic scenes were kept very short. Once their impact (no pun intended) was made, von Trier was on to the next scene.

This film is not a sexy telling of a young girls sexcapades. Rather, it’s a look into the psychology behind sex, and people with unusual desires and needs. Joe’s tale starts out when she was incredibly young, and focuses on her need for sexual interaction rather than her enjoyment. Although she wasn’t enjoying her erotic activity in the beginning, she soon found that with sex, there was a certain kind of power. Her past is filled with sexual games such as competing with her best friend to see how many men they could sleep with on a single train ride. The winner got nothing more than a bag of sweets, but it wasn’t about the prize. She enjoyed the game. The manipulation. As she began gaining pleasure, her appetite increased, and so did her schedule of lovers. We are also confronted with her first feelings of love once she begins working for the man who, years ago, took her virginity (Shia LaBeouf).

nymphomaniac-2_rgb

There is more to this film than sex, pleasure, and tales of youth gone wild. We are also confronted with loss, as Joe loses her beloved father that we see through guide her through her childhood with tales of trees on their walks though the woods. The one connection we see as a constant with Joe is the relationship with her dad, played by Christian Slater. Their connection is the one breath of innocence that Joe has left. When it is taken away, it is an intense moment.

Stacy Martin is fantastic as the dead eyed, sexually sprightly Joe. She does a fantastic job of leaving her emotion and chemistry out the window as she takes on her many lovers. When we finally do see her click with someone, it’s a very powerful moment. Shia LaBeouf  has always impressed me as an actor. He has a way of translating scenes to an audience in a realistic way, without going over the top.

NYMPHOMANIAC : VOLUME 1 is not for an uptight audience. Having said that, there is much more than explicit sex going on in this film. It’s the tale of a girl trying to live her life and cope with her needs in a society that does not understand.

BREATHE IN – The Review

Guy_Pearce_Felicity_Jones_in_BREATHE_IN_Courtesy_of_Cohen_Media_Group copy

Drake Doremus takes us on a journey into the lives of a suburbanized city family man and the exchange student who opened his eyes in the all new American drama BREATHE IN.

BREATHE IN is the newest release by director Drake Doremus, and stars Felicity Jones, who is making her second appearance in a Doremus film. Jones plays Sophie Williams, a British exchange student who has come to New York to find inspiration on her musical journey. She ended up with a seemingly happy host family, but soon that facade begins to crumble. Her attention is turned on Keith, played by Guy Pearce, an angry musician who has watched his passion fizzle into an unrewarding, lifeless career as a piano teacher. Sophie’s passion for music begins to awaken a part of Keith that has layer dormant for years, and the two form a bond over the feeling that they don’t belong in the house that they come home to.

Written by Doremus and Ben York Jones, the story itself is not as powerful as I hoped that it would be. Doremus captures these incredible, emotional moments, but I feel that the warning signs of what was to come were so apparent that the character might as well have walked right into them face first… and in a sense, they did. The film is incredibly predictable. Having said that, the performances are what make this an interesting film. Guy Pearce and Felicity Jones play their characters with an intensity and power that draws the audience in. Their chemistry is undeniable on-screen.

Doremus uses a low, natural light to capture a breathless, more natural feel to the film, allowing a fitting mood to compliment the actors during their scenes. He does a great job of showcasing the lighter and darker sides of love. I feel like all of the pieces of the puzzle were there to make an incredible film, but due to the predictability of the script… I found it to only be a good film.

SABOTAGE (2014) – The Review

sabotage

With Hollywood these days the old adage “everything old is new again” seems to really apply to those golden 1980’s (ugh, I feel ancient!). Kids shows from the era like “Transformers” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” are big blockbuster flicks at the multiplex. And there have already been remakes of 80’s flicks the first couple of months of 2014 with ROBOCOP and ENDLESS LOVE. Of course, there’s the stars of that decade. In two weeks we’ll see Kevin Costner in his fourth feature film in less than ten months with DRAFT DAY. Then there’s the big action icons, and nobody dominated the big screen then more than rivals Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger (who joined forces in the EXPENDABLES series and last year’s ESCAPE PLAN. But Arnold stepped away from the sound stages for the governor’s mansion for several years while Vin Diesel and Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson took over the big-muscle roles. Scandals pretty much ended Arnold’s political career, but can the greying “Austrian Oak” reignite his film career? Well, he’s getting a bit out of his movie comfort zone by teaming up with writer/director David Ayer who wrote the gritty TRAINING DAY and the lauded police thriller END OF WATCH. Can he help make Arnold a big gun at the box office once more?

In SABOTAGE Arnold is John ‘Breacher’ Wharton, a DEA agent haunted by past tragedies who leads an elite task force that includes ‘Neck” (Josh Holloway), ‘Sugar’ (Terrance Howard), ‘Grinder’ (Joe Manganiello), ‘Pyro’ (Max Martini), and the husband and wife team of ‘Monster’ (Sam Worthington) and Lizzie (Mirelle Enos). As the film opens they stage a violent raid on the mansion of a big time drug dealer. Lizzie, their agent undercover, directs them to the massive hidden stash of cash. After trimming a few million from the top, Breacher and the crew hide it for a later pick-up, and blow up the bulk of the loot. When they return to the drop spot, the dough is gone. Who snatched it up? While the incident  is investigated, Breacher must “ride a desk”, while his team is left to spin their wheels (training at their hideaway HQ). After the heat blows over, Breacher puts his squad back on the job. But someone has other plans, as crew members, one by one, meet gruesome deaths. Breacher teams up with Caroline (Oliva Williams) a tough, no-nonsense FBI agent, to find out who’s out to eliminate his drug-busting brothers (and a sister).

Arnold gives a quiet, restrained performance as a tough as nails commander shouldering a massive sadness. He’s a greying, glowering, grimacing pitbull of a man who barks at his team when not lighting up another in an endless supply of massive cigars. Basically the counterpart to the more colorful team and he is unfortunately overshadowed by them on screen. Arnold does have a good rapport with Williams as the often funny, straight-shooting bureau worker who’s a bit adrift in the sea of macho posturing. Manganiello is a compelling physical presence as the group’s moral compass with an intimidating look and tightly wound hairstyle choices. Howard is an unflappable smooth talker who always seem to have a plan or three in his back pocket. Holloway oozes cool southern charm, much like his character from TV’s “Lost”. Speaking of which, his co-star from that show, Harold Perrineau shines as Williams’s FBI confidant and co-worker. Worthington with his shaved head and wild, twisted goatee is almost unrecognizable as the aggressive point man who is torn between his boss and his missus. Enos gives Lizzy an almost feral quality as the wild-eyed spitfire who may not be completely finished with her past indulgences. She brings an earthy, unpredictable energy to every scene. This is probably Arnold’s best big screen support team since the original PREDATOR..

It’s a shame this macho crew isn’t given a more meaty story to sink their teeth into. Director Ayer makes many scenes far too confusing as he cuts between the crime and later investigation with little method of keeping the two timelines separate. At the end of the second act one character goes off in a direction that contradicts almost everything seen earlier. And just who was in on the drug money rip-off? Just the team or everybody at the agency? For the last half of the film it turns from cop thriller to “Ten Little Indians” slasher-like whodunit (or who’s gonna’ meet a  gnarly, grisly demise?). Like those flicks, the gore and grime is so intense it hovers over every frame of film. Buckets of sticky-looking crimson wash over everyone at times (you wonder how long it took to scrub that gunk off after wrapping). The big car chase near the finish is particularly horrific as many innocent bystanders meet their demise (no PG fruit stands crashes here). After the mystery is revealed the film is further dragged down by a brutal, ludicrous epilogue. Credit Arnold for trying to go in a different direction, but SABOTAGE is a grimy, nasty dour trudge through a swamp of brutality and blood that should repulse fans of the affable action superstar. We hope he’ll be “boock” with a much better flick!

THE RAID 2 Opens In St. Louis April 11

SONY-XROS-01_MPAA_030614.indd

Director/Writer Gareth Evans’ THE RAID 2 arrives in U.S. theaters today (March 28th) and Sony Pictures Classics’ will release the film in St. Louis on Friday, April 11.

After having an early look at Evans’ film, my fellow Movie Geeks are raving about it.

Tom Stockman, calls the R-rated movie, “a hyper-violent, adrenaline-fueled epic!” Jim Batts says, “RAID 2 is a non-stop thrill ride that will have your heart pumping almost from the first fade-in to the final fade-out! It’s an action film lover’s fever dream!” Look for WAMG’s review in the coming weeks.

Here’s what goes down in THE RAID 2 –

He thought it was over. After fighting his way out of a building filled with gangsters and madmen – a fight that left the bodies of police and gangsters alike piled in the halls – rookie Jakarta cop Rama thought it was done and he could resume a normal life. He couldn’t have been more wrong.

Formidable though they may have been, Rama’s opponents in that fateful building were nothing more than small fish swimming in a pond much larger than he ever dreamed possible. And his triumph over the small fry has attracted the attention of the predators farther up the food chain. His family at risk, Rama has only one choice to protect his infant son and wife: He must go undercover to enter the criminal underworld himself and climb through the hierarchy of competing forces until it leads him to the corrupt politicians and police pulling the strings at the top of the heap.

16

And so Rama begins a new odyssey of violence, a journey that will force him to set aside his own life and history and take on a new identity as the violent offender “Yuda.” In prison he must gain the confidence of Uco – the son of a prominent gang kingpin – to join the gang himself, laying his own life on the line in a desperate all-or-nothing gambit to bring the whole rotten enterprise to an end.

THE RAID 2 was produced by Ario Sagantoro for Merantau Films, and Aram Tertzakian and Nate Bolotin of XYZ Films. The film was executive produced by Rangga Maya Barack-Evans for Merantau Films, Irwan D. Mussry, Nick Spicer and Todd Brown on behalf of XYZ.

To get the look on THE RAID 2, Evans and the behind-the-scenes team focused their efforts on balancing the old and the new. They wanted to make sure the audience recognized the familiar setting from the original, while exploring new parts of this environment.

The sequel focuses on of Rama entering Jakarta’s underworld, where the stakes are higher. The sequel was shot in cinemascope in order to provide a wider frame and give the story a more epic feel. The photography also explored a wider range of the color palette, using different lighting for each character. The film opens with similar tones as the first one and shifts as Rama enters the criminal organization.

Shooting the film was a learning experience. On MERANTAU, the team learned to shoot martial arts. On THE RAID: REDEMPTION, they learned to shoot gunfights. And on THE RAID 2 they went one step further, adding car chases to the mix.

On MERANTAU we felt we were focusing on the narrative drama scenes. For the action scenes, the takes were too long. We learned from that and fixed things on THE RAID: REDEMPTION. THE RAID: REDEMPTION had a majority of action scenes. We got to play a lot with camera angles and fluidity. Finding a new way to shoot action scenes. THE RAID 2 is a much bigger project. What we chose to do is a combination of the two elements we learned from MERANTAU and THE RAID: REDEMPTION: dynamic, edgy and fluid camera movements, while at the same time knowing when to go for more classical and sophisticated compositions (when to use jimmy jib, steady cams and dolly track). Combining those two different styles was an interesting challenge in that respect. (Evans)

Because this was the first time a car chase of this scale was shot in Indonesia, a lot of time was spent on logistics. Unlike places like Hong Kong or the UK, where they have been shooting car chases for years, Indonesia did not have a particular set-up for this. The production team had to build the structure itself to achieve specific shots:

“We had to have a shoot from the inside of one car going down a highway with the camera moving to another car straight away ,then have the back window to blown out for the camera to follow through the back window and out again. To do that, we discussed different combinations of computer-generated imagery, visual effects, green screens and so on. After a long discussion, we felt like we would be technically limited if we were to use too many special effects. In the end we decided to do it for real, meaning moving the camera from one camera operator to the other.

This is something we had done on THE RAID: REDEMPTION when we went through a hole on the floor. It was done in a controlled environment and the only issue was the person passing the camera to another. But the difficulty here was to pass the camera between moving cars on a highway. It was risky shot, but thankfully after a number of takes it was done well”. (Evans)

Camera moves were carefully integrated into the martial arts choreography. The fighters’ moves were choreographed to the slightest detail, and so were camera movements. Camera angles were designed before the shoot, so it never feels like the camera interferes with the action. A constant mantra during shooting was to highlight the actors’ performances.

Additionally, Madison Gate Records and SpaceLab9 have announced the worldwide release of THE RAID 2 Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. The album hit digital retailers on March 25th, with the CD format coming April 29, 2014, followed by a deluxe vinyl LP edition early summer 2014.

Composer Joseph Trapanese (The Raid: Redemption, Oblivion, TRON: Uprising) returns along with Aria Prayogi and Fajar Yuskemal to provide a score equal parts electronic and orchestral, deeply layered and breathtaking, all while perfectly complimenting the frenetic on-screen action of THE RAID 2. The 24-track album features original motion picture score with over an hour of music, plus the original song “Hush” written and performed by Indonesian jazz artist Arti Dewi.

“It is with great pleasure that I share with you the original soundtrack to ‘THE RAID 2,’ a creative collaboration with director Gareth Evans that was equal parts inspired, fun, and satisfying,” says composer Joseph Trapanese. “I’m thrilled that Madison Gate Records and SpaceLab9 are releasing the album so that all the fans can relive this film’s brutality and beauty.”
